October 2015 BE THE MESSAGE! As I perused through a number of religious publications recently, my attention quickly attached itself to an article that was entitled "Be The Message." My immediate reaction was "Wow!" As I attempted to deeply and prayerfully reflect upon this powerful exhortation, my mind raced through a myriad of "Faith-Examples" who are the message of hope and love. We begin with our Lord and Saviour example of gracious hospitality. He lived the word. He reached out to homeless, to the castaways, to the faithless, et al. We see incredible parables of the Prodigal Son, the and the Pharisee, how goodness and fear, hate, and nastiness. Jesus Christ Who is the Ultimate didn't simply preach the word; He the isolated, to the sick, to the the outcasts, to the sinners, to the situations whereby through the Good Samaritan, and the Publican forgiveness overcome, prejudice, Many personalities from the Old God's guidance and direction: Noah, David the Prophet, Isaiah, female disciples, along with the Panaghia, and so many more. Are you working consistently to be the message and the messenger as a Christian? What are you doing towards this end? Are you more active than passive? Are you more talk than action? Kastanas The Holy Great Martyr Demetrius the Myrrh-streamer Monday, October 26, 2015 Reading: Saint Demetrius was a Thessalonian, a most pious son of pious and noble parents, and a teacher of the Faith of Christ. When Maximian first came to Thessalonica in 290, he raised the Saint to the rank of Duke of Thessaly. But when it was discovered that the Saint was a Christian, he was arrested and kept bound in a bath-house. While the games were under way in the city, Maximian was a spectator there. A certain friend of his, a barbarian who was a notable wrestler, Lyaeus by name, waxing haughty because of the height and strength of his body, boasted in the stadium and challenged the citizens to a contest with him. All that fought with him were defeated. Seeing this, a certain youth named Nestor, aquaintance of Demetrius', came to the Saint in the bathhouse and asked his blessing to fight Lyaeus single-handed. Receiving this blessing and sealing himself with the sign of the precious Cross, he presented himself in the stadium, and said, "O God of Demetrius, help me!" and straightway he engaged Lyaeus in combat and smote him with a mortal blow to the heart, leaving the former boaster lifeless upon the earth. Maximian was sorely grieved over this, and when he learned who was the cause of this defeat, he commanded straightway and Demetrius was pierced with lances while he was yet in the bath-house, As for Nestor, Maximian commanded that he be slain with his own sword. For as you brought to naught the boasts of Lyaios, imparting courage to Nestor in the stadium, in like manner, holy one, great Martyr Dimitrios, invoke Christ God for us, that He may grant us His great mercy. Our St. Athanasius Parish hosted its 18th annual Golf Tournament benefiting the ministries of the Community. Kastanas. 10 News and Announcements Sunday Catechetical School The Catechetical Sunday School ministry welcomes back students, parents and teachers for the 20152016 academic year. Classes started on Sunday September 13th. If you have not yet registered your student, please, go to http://tinyurl.com/cssreg2016 to register today! We need to have up to date information about your family and your student, as well as your email so we can reach out to you with timely and useful information. Below we have compiled a list of frequently asked question about Catechetical Sunday School: Q. When does the Sunday School program take place? A. Classes begin Sunday, September 13th and conclude the Sunday before Memorial Day weekend. Classes begin with attendance during the Divine Liturgy at 10am. Classroom instruction for PreK - 2nd grade takes place following Father's sermon until Holy Communion. Classroom instruction for grades 3-10 takes place following Holy Communion until 12:15pm. Q. How old does my child need to be to enter Sunday School? A. Children must be 4 years old to enter the PreK class. Classes are offered through the 10th grade. High School graduates of the Sunday School program may volunteer as Sunday School assistant teachers. Q. What is the registration fee? A. The Sunday School program is a ministry of the St Athanasius the Great parish offered to all families without a fee. We do suggest a voluntary annual donation of $20/child. Q. Our family is exploring the Orthodox Christian faith, may we register our children for Sunday School? A. Yes! We welcome all children to come learn about the Orthodox Christian faith in our program. If you have not yet spoken to Father Nicholas Kastanas we encourage you to do. Q. My child is differently-abled can s/he be registered for the program? A. Yes! We welcome all children and encourage you to speak with our volunteers about how we can help your child have a fulfilling experience in our program. Q. Does Sunday School only happen on Sunday mornings? A. Our core program is Sunday mornings, however, we organize a number of special events throughout the year at various times and we'd love to have your family participate. These may include the Nativity Pageant, visiting the Hellenic Nursing Home, the Oratorical Festival, the Holy Friday Retreat and more! Have more questions? Please let us know! The Catechetical Sunday School ministry is supported by a committed set of faithful volunteers that contribute their effort, time and talent to teach and assist in each of our 12 Catechetical Sunday school 11 News and Announcements grades. This year, we are blessed with the return of many veteran teachers, as well as, the addition of several new ones that will continue this teaching tradition in the years to come. Our Catechetical Sunday School music program will be supported by Alexis Mitchell. If you have not yet met your student's Catechetical School teacher, please, stop by to say 'hello' and 'thank you'. Your support and active encouragement is one of the most important and visible rewards that our teachers can receive for their blessed and humble efforts in children's ministry. The Catechetical school staff hosted the fellowship hour on Sunday September 27th. We thank all teachers for their offerings and on this and every Sunday during the school year. The October monthly staff meeting will be taking place on Sunday, October 11th at 12:15 pm. Little Halos On September 8th, 2015 our Little Halos Preschool Day School, opened its doors with great enthusiasm by students and parents. Father Nick blessed our school with an Agiasmo service on September 15th. Following the service, we all posed for a class picture and concluded with a reception in the James Bouboulis Parish auditorium. We are happy to announce our school is filled to capacity and Registration for Fall 2016 will begin on November 30th, 2015 on a first come first serve basis. Our Mission Since 1988, Horizons has been serving young homeless children and their families in Massachusetts. Horizons for Homeless Children improves the lives of young homeless children in Massachusetts and helps their families to succeed by providing high-quality early education, opportunities for play, and comprehensive family support services. We also advocate on behalf of young children, train educators and human service providers, and provide research on homeless children. Horizons for Homeless Children is recognized as a national leader in the education of homeless children. Today, we provide services to more than 2,000 young homeless children and their families each week. Our Vision Every homeless child in Massachusetts will have the opportunity to learn, play, and thrive. horizonschildren.org 32 1in 30 children in the U.S. has experienced homelessness Research shows that high-quality, trauma-informed early education for young children can mitigate the effects of long term stress, and is the most effective way to enable future school success. Investments in early education may also reduce the need for costly services later in a child’s life. Investments in early education and social emotional learning can help children be ready to learn. Our Programs Early Education Centers Our three early education centers, known as Community Children’s Centers, are designed to meet the unique needs of young homeless children. Each center takes an individualized approach using evidence-based curriculum and social emotional skill building tactics, providing children with high quality care and a developmentallyappropriate program to help them enter school with the skills that they need to be successful. As parental engagement is key to a child’s success, families receive additional support services such as parenting classes and connections to community services, educational opportunities and financial literacy classes. Playspaces Our Playspace Program ensures that young children living in homeless shelters in Massachusetts have the opportunity for developmentally-appropriate play and early education opportunities. Horizons builds educational Playspaces in shelters and stocks them with age-appropriate books, toys, and art supplies. We currently have more than 130 Playspaces that are staffed by more than 1,400 trained volunteers, called Playspace Activity Leaders (PALs), who commit two hours each week to children in a shelter Playspace. With Playspace available to them, parents are able to take onsite classes, meet with a case manager and do what they need to get their family back on their feet. Our PAL volunteer program is one of the largest volunteer networks in Massachusetts. How can you help? Research & Evaluation We have an active program to evaluate our program interventions, assess results, achieve outcomes and improve performance.
