From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parishioners,
“So I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven because she has shown great love.” (Luke 7:47)
It amazes me how the Pharisees (and yes, sometimes us), can be so miserly with God’s mercy. Throughout the
Scriptures, Jesus reveals the Father whose mercy and love goes beyond what we cannot only imagine but at times
understand. The host, Simon, has invited Jesus to test him. His inability to open his heart to the message of Jesus has
caused him to act in rude behavior. Jesus says nothing until the time comes for him to teach. A woman, who is known
as a sinner, hears Jesus is dining in the house and she wishes to see him. She comes, and, through her tears, she honors
Jesus. Her tears are the sign of her sorrow and desire to be forgiven. Instead of rejoicing that a daughter of God desires
to be reconciled, Simon the Pharisee uses the opportunity to put Jesus down. You can almost hear the sarcasm when
he says, “If this man were a prophet He would know what sort of woman this is.” Talk about missing the point! His
understanding of God’s mercy is so limited that it points out his own understanding of God. How sad.
Yet, aren’t there times we might have the same attitude? Maybe we point out the sins of others as a way of making us
feel superior. We, at those times, conveniently forget the sins of our own lives. This attitude can make us hard of heart
to the failings of others and the call we have received to be instruments of Jesus’ forgiveness and healing. An even sadder
understanding is when we hold back that forgiveness in our lives for our own sins. Maybe we feel that we have sinned so
terribly that we believe that Jesus could never forgive us. In one sense this is a destructive sense of evil pride. The devil
does not want us to seek out and accept the forgiveness of God. If we remain in our sins it will be a burden that we
hold on to and the sense of unworthiness will strangle our relationship with God. In the Old Testament reading from
the Book of Samuel, Nathan speaks the words of forgiveness to King David for his sins. The woman in the Gospel is
forgiven. When both feel, accept and live that forgiveness it changes their lives. They feel the love of God and that love
compels them to a life of holiness in God’s ways. Let it be the same for you. There is never anything we could do that
God will not forgive us if we come to Him with a contrite heart. Ponder that mercy and compassion God has for us…
go to the Sacrament of Reconciliation (confession) and be unburdened…feel the healing that comes from the words the
priest speaks in the name of Jesus, “I absolve you of your sins.” Do not be afraid…you are loved by Jesus. Live in the
freedom of God’s children.
I wish to congratulate the graduates from our High School and Elementary School. Join with me in offering a prayer
that God will bless their footsteps.
I would like to thank Fr. Jude and the Year of Mercy Committee for visiting the St. Pius X Residence for the senior
priests of our Diocese. They represented us and it was a most enjoyable day for all.
As you know, Fr. Chris will be leaving us on June 29th for his new assignment as the pastor of St. Martha’s in
Uniondale. Fr. Chris will offer a Mass of Thanksgiving on June 19th at the 12 Noon Mass. A reception will follow in
the Marian Room. All are invited and encouraged to attend and wish Fr. Chris blessings in his new ministry.
In Jesus,
Fr. Bob
The Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time | June 12, 2016
Stewards of God’s Gifts
St. Paul reminds us in the second reading that “I live by faith in the Son of God who has loved me and given
Himself up for me.” What do we give to - and do - for others? What do we give to - and do - for Jesus?
We are grateful this week for all stewards of God’s mercy in our parish who care for the sick by visiting
family members and friends who are ill, praying for the sick individually by name or making a meal for
people who are facing difficult situations in caring for a sick loved one.
The collection for Sunday, June 5, 2016 amounted to $29,268.00
The collection for Sunday, June 7, 2015 amounted to $23,691.00.

Jubilee Year of Mercy
Jubilee for
the Sick and
Persons with
Disabilities –
June 12, 2016
It is wonderful
to begin with an
observation, and acknowledgement,
of the tremendous effort to provide
healing, care and comfort, happiness
and success, for the sick and
challenged – in body, mind, and
spirit. Church, State, organizations,
and individuals have devised and
established all kinds of gadgets and
facilities – from hospitals to homes
and hospices, from specialized
equipment and accessibles to Special
Olympics, from IEPs and 504-Plans
to fund-raising on behalf of the sick
and disabled. We recognize and praise
all such ventures as we celebrate the
Year of Mercy.
But it is equally appropriate to
look at the other side of the story.
History has it that Hitler and the
Nazi administration eliminated about
200,000 sick and disabled people,
as part of the planned cleansing.
Blessed Clemens August Count von
Galen of Munster was considered
the staunchest opponent of the Nazi
program to exterminate invalids, old
people, the mentally and physically
disabled and handicapped. Even the
Nazi Office of Propaganda considered
one of his relentless powerful sermons
as “the fiercest frontal attack unleashed
on Nazism in all the years of its
existence.” Part of the sermon reads:
“A curse on [us] if we break the holy
commandment ‘You shall not kill.’
Woe to us…if we not only license
this heinous offense but allow it
to be committed with impunity…
Now defenseless innocents are killed,
barbarously killed; people also of a
different race, of different origins,
are suppressed. We are faced with a
homicidal folly without equal…With
people like this, with these assassins
who are proudly trampling our lives,
I can no more share belonging to the
same people!” He then asked whether
the returning permanently injured
German soldiers and sailors would fall
under the euthanasia program as well.
“Woe be to our soldiers who return
home wounded, disabled, or sick!”
America is wonderful about revering
and caring for wounded, sick and
disabled veterans. But is there a social,
political and legal threat to life from
conception to natural death? Are there
advocacies and agendas out there for
euthanasia of all kinds – for the social
and economic good and progress of
the sound and chosen ones? And what
are we doing about it?
Pope St. John Paul II once said, “The
present day mentality, more perhaps
than that of people in the past, seems
opposed to a God of mercy, and in
fact tends to exclude from life and to
remove from the human heart, the
very idea of mercy” (Rich in Mercy,
9). Pope Francis knows that too well.
His Year of Mercy agenda is a frontal
opposition to this mentality. He
powerfully presents God as a God of
Mercy, and Jesus as the Face of that
Mercy. “Day after day, touched by
His compassion, we also can become
compassionate towards others” (Face of
Mercy, 14).
This weekend, may we think of the
sick and disabled. May we pray for
them. May we visit them. May we
think of action for them. Our Parish
has wonderful ministries in place:

Jubilee Year of Mercy
Parishioners Celebrate the Jubilee for Priests
with Retired Priests at the St. Pius X Residence
Inspired by the Pastor’s suggestion, as part of the Jubilee of Mercy, and our
Catholic responsibilities to perform Works of Mercy (corporal and spiritual),
Fr. Jude and seven parishioners (Catherine Abbatangelo, Nancy Azzaro, Mary
Lou & Marc de Venoge, Bill McFadden, Nanette Calderon, and Michael
Vezzi of Corpus Christi) spent an evening visiting our retired diocesan priests
at St. Pius X Residence in Amityville. Our Saturday June 4th visit began with
brief introductions and then Evening Prayer and the Rosary in their beautiful
chapel. Msgr. Thomas Costa and other personnel welcomed us and guided us to the dining room. Priests and parishioners
together shared a delicious meal and lots of memorable stories. Everyone was smiling and laughing and happy to be with
each other. For me (Catherine), it was like Thanksgiving. It was simply wonderful. Along with ice cream cake dessert (the
priests’ favorite) we sang Happy Jubilee for the Priests (June 3). Everyone was happy and is looking forward to another
visit. The priests extended their gratitude to St. Mary’s. Please pray for and consider visiting these Servants of God.
If you are interested in going on the Pilgrimage to Washington, D.C. in September and haven’t let us know

RCIA With the completion of the instruction of this year’s RCIA candidates, we begin our search for other folks in our
midst who might like to join the Catholic Church or complete their Sacraments of Initiation. All parishioners are called
on to seek out friends or family that might like to join the Church or complete their Sacraments of Initiation. Please, invite
them to do so. Anyone interested should call Sr. Teresa at 627-0385, ext. 1010 for more information.
There are many adults that have never received the Sacrament of Confirmation for a variety of reasons. Confirmation
is the third Sacrament of Initiation and is one of the requirements for Catholics to qualify as sponsors for Baptism and
Confirmation.
All Parishioners Are Invited to Join Our
Summer Book Club
The first meeting will be on Monday, June 13th
11:00 AM - 12:30 PM
in the Saint John Paul II Room
The Summer Book Club will meet during the months of June and July. All are Welcome. If you cannot attend the
meetings, consider reading on your own. But be advised this is not “lite” summer reading, especially our first choice.
The first book we are reading is a highly praised biography of St. Catherine of Siena. St. Catherine was a remarkable
woman, who became a canonized Saint and Doctor of the Church. The book is entitled Catherine of Siena by Sigrid
Undset. It is available at book stores and at Amazon.com
Sigrid Undset’s Catherine of Siena is critically acclaimed as one of the best biographies of this well known and amazing
fourteenth century saint. Known for her historical fiction, which won her the Nobel Prize for literature in 1928, Undset
based this factual work on primary sources, her own experiences living in Italy and her profound understanding of the
human heart.
Our schedule for this book is Chapters 1-8 for the first session on June 13th, Chapters 9-16 on June 20th, and Chapter
17 to the end of the book on June 27th.
Children’s Liturgy of the Word Next Sunday at the 9:00 AM Mass

As we hear in the Gospel today we realize that
sometimes we are like Simon as it is far easier
to see what is wrong in another than it is to
see what is wrong in ourselves. But Jesus, who
accepts the poor woman without judging or
blaming her, show us what Christian love is all
about.
Through your almsgiving you are performing a
good work; far greater than you think. The coins
placed in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box
bring Christ’s love and compassion to the poor.

Forcing
Abortion
by Tom Grenchik
Millions of
Americans are deeply concerned about
abortion. And tens of thousands of
health care professionals do not want
to be forced to participate in abortion
in any way. Yet everywhere you
look, great pressure is being exerted
on individuals and institutions to
cooperate in abortion.
It would seem that our current
Administration is anything but “prochoice” on abortion. It’s not enough
that abortion is sometimes funded
with our taxes. It’s not enough to insist
on forcing coverage of abortifacient
drugs and devices in health plans,
even for the Little Sisters of the Poor.
They want every health care provider
and every institution, Catholic or
otherwise, to perform or refer for
abortions.
So while Americans, especially young
people, are growing more and more
in respect for unborn children, the
Administration wants to force even
the most unwilling “accomplices” to
violate their consciences.
Federal laws protecting conscientious
objection to abortion have been
approved for decades by legislators
and presidents of both major political
Virtus Training:
Protecting God’s
Children
Take the case of Cathy CenzonDeCarlo, R.N., who was forced
by her employer to participate in a
late-term abortion against her deeplyheld beliefs. Threatened with losing
her job and even her nursing license,
she had to be present for the bloody
dismemberment of an unborn child
and then account for all the body
parts. That was a major violation of
her conscience rights. She then found
she had no right to go to court to
keep this from happening to others.
Watch her story, Stand with Cathy for
Conscience Rights. . . on YouTube,
and share it with your friends & social
networks.
For years the Catholic Bishops have
asked Congress to reform federal laws
on conscience rights, especially to
protect individual and institutional
health care providers who object to
abortion – good citizens like Cathy
DeCarlo.
Like Cathy, most medical professionals
want nothing to do with abortion.
They need Congress to pass sensible
legislation like the Conscience
Protection Act of 2016 (H.R. 4828/S.
2927). Over two dozen pro-life and
medical organizations have already
joined the bishops in urging Congress
to do so. We need as many pro-life
people as possible from across the
country to send e-mail messages to
their elected representatives. . . , urging
them to support the Conscience
Protection Act.
Nurses like Cathy need your support.
To help out, please:
1.Watch & share the video “Stand
with Cathy for Conscience Rights.”
2.Take action! Send your message to
Congress today!
The Conscience Protection Act would
be an enormous step forward in
assuring that Americans who serve
the sick and needy can do so without
being forced by government to violate
their most deeply held convictions on
respect for innocent human life. For
more information about the need to
protect conscience rights, visit www.
usccb.org/conscience.
Let us pray that Congress will have
the courage to move this sensible
legislation forward.

at 7:00 PM. You must register online at http://virtus.org. Any adult who volunteers
in any capacity at St. Mary’s Parish or in our schools must take Virtus training and
submit to a background check. Volunteer forms are available in the Parish Office or
