Congratulations on your Stratomaster Ultra Purchase!
Sonex,ltd would like to provide the following notes on your Stratomaster
installation:
1. CHT Probe Installation: CHT Probes require a great deal of care when
installing and removing your spark plugs and may require some material be
removed from your cylinder head fins to provide proper clearance. The CHT
probes provided with your Stratomaster are Type K. The CHT probes are
installed between the spark plug body and the washer provided with the spark
plug. (see image below):

2. EGT Probe Installation: We have not used a hose clamp in any of our
Stratomaster EGT Installations. We drill and tap the exhaust and then screw the
probe in. Make sure your probe is installed 4 inches down from the top of
the exhaust stack flange. These EGT Probes are Type K. Note: On Jabiru
Engines, only two of the cylinders will provide reliable data. These are the back
two cylinders using the Jabiru Exhausts with mufflers and the front two cylinders
using the Sonex Straight-Pipe Exhuasts. You may choose to use a hose clamp
with a hole in it wrapped around the exhaust pipe to further secure the probe:
3. Sonex Fuel Level Probe: Your Sonex-Specific Stratomaster Fuel Level Probe
is set up to simulate a Resistive (ohm) output to your instrument as the fuel level
changes. Follow the instructions provided with both the probe and instrument
carefully. For your information, we are providing our factory installation
procedure:
From the Fuel Level Probe "Black Box":
Hook up the Green Wire to the Stratomaster Fuel Level Input on the RDVAC, the
Red Wire to +12V, and the Black Wire to Ground.
We Started with an empty fuel tank and add 1 gallon of fuel and set Fuel Tank
capacity at 0.0 Gallons by hitting "Select" with the Current Output Reading (for
us, this reading was 1920 Ohms). This gives us 1 gallon when the tank level is
reading 0 Gallons. We then set our "fuel low" alarm at 2.0 Gallons, which gives
us more than a 1/2 hour reserve once the alarm goes off.
Follow the Instructions on Page 55 of your manual to calibrate your sensor.
Our calibration used the following Resistive Outputs:
0.0 Gallons 1920 Ohms
2.9 Gallons 1869 Ohms
5.8 Gallons 1804 Ohms
8.9 Gallons 1757 Ohms
11.8 Gallons 1703 Ohms
15.06 Gallons 1651 Ohms
4. Fuel Flow Option: Your Fuel Flow meter has a small plastic washer that will
be installed on the inlet side of the unit. This washer restricts the amount of fuel
that can flow through the meter and directs the fuel stream for consistent
readings. We highly recommend removing this restrictor and drilling it out from an
inner diameter of 0.078" or 5/64" (restricts to 5.63 gallons per hour) up to
0.1103" or 7/64" (allows up to 13.6 gph and still yields consistent fuel flow
readings).
FYI: We set our Fuel Flow Calibration to 350. You may wish to conduct a few
tests to verify consistent fuel flow readings.
5. Tachometer Set-up: We have set up our tachometer to take a reading off of
one of the “pigtails” exiting the Alternator Stator. We accomplish this by simply
running a wire splice from the pigtail to the “Rev Counter” terminal on the RDAC.
Only one of the two pigtail wires will give you a reading. If you don’t get a reading
from the first one, try the other one.
The 10-Amp Alternators used on the 2200 Jabiru and 2180 Aero Vee yield 5
pulses per revolution, so your Rev Setup will be 50.
The 20-Amp Alternator used on the 3300 Jabiru yields 6 pulses per revolution, so
your Rev Setup will be 60.
6. Oil Temp Set-up: Set the Oil Temp Probe to “Standard NTC”
7. Oil Pressure Set-up: Set the Oil Pressure Resistance to 200. (Note: On the
Jabiru 2200 and 3300, the Oil Pressure wire should be attached to the terminal
labeled “G”)
8. Optional Addition of a Capacitor to the Stratomaster Power Supply:
When the stratomaster unit sees voltage spikes (or low voltage), its internal
protection will turn the screen off on the unit. We have solved this problem in our
installations by adding a 10,000mF Capactior between the positive and negative
power supply terminals on the back of the unit.
9.General Grounding Practice: The ground wire for your Stratomaster (and all
your electronic equipment) should be run directly from the negative terminal on
your battery.
