The Town of Dover selected Mills Whitaker Architects to
develop a building program, preliminary design and budget
for a new community center. The corner site, in the center of town, contained a former elementary school that was
housed within three interconnected buildings dating from
1910, 1931 and 1971. The charge from the Board of Selectmen was to develop a community center that would be architecturally compatible with the town hall and library while
serving the diverse needs of youth, families and seniors for
the next century. Design explorations were to include considerations of renovating the existing building, constructing
a new facility, or developing a hybrid of renovation, demolition and additions.
Mills Whitaker Architects worked with user groups to develop a program for the Council on Aging, Parks and Recreation Department, Community Education, Dance and Movement and other users of the facility. The resultant proposed
design is a new building that includes a Great Room, Senior
Center, Gymnasium, Dance Studio, Activity Rooms and areas for future expansion. The $18.5 million project involves
removal of the former school and complete redevelopment
of the site to serve as a vibrant social hub for the town.
