OPERATIONS:- Company "A" continued its work at the 59th QM Base
Depot at Mannheim.The job had to be turned over on 13 August
194-5 to the 290th Engr C Bn since the company was not left with
sufficient men to handle the work after men with high adjusted
service rating scores were returned to the States, however, work
on a railroad bridge which Company "A" started on 5 July 1945 con
tinued even though the company strength was greatly impaired. On
11 July 1945 a temporary bridge was completed and forms for run
ning concrete abutments were in place by 15 July 1945.

1B » Tile Seventh Army Information and Education Warehouse was set
up between Mannheim and heidelberg.
For this warehouse "B" Com
pany constructed shelves for text books and partitioned off one
section of vae huge warenouse for an office. Company "B" did
additional work at the QM Base Depot at Mannheim, removing rubble.
Company "0' continued construction work in assembly areas in the
vicinity of Bensheim, Germany. This work consisted of road repair
policing the area, making kitchens, constructing latrines and
other general maintenance duties.
ADMINISTRATION:-
On 14 and lb July 1945, the battalion sent a
total of 552 enlisted men and 3 officers to the States.
This left
tne operational and administrative efficiency of tne .battalion
very low.
However, plans were made to bring "C" Company in from
bensheim, Germany to supplement ri&S Company.
TRAILING:- Training was called to a halt as all available men
were needed for operations.

positionr vacancies caused by the reduction in size of Headquarters

The 540th Engineer Combat Group was attached to VI Cort
for
operations and supervised the 48th, 2832nd and 2833rd Engineer Combat
Battalions, attached to this headquarters. On 10 July, the 2?0th
Engineer Combat Battalion was attached to this organization for operations.
The 540th Engineer Combat Group and attached units passed to the control
of XXI Corps, 20 July with the following additional organizations attached
to the Group:

43th Engineer Combat Battalion:
Performed road maintenance in
assigned area and constructed roads in Engineer Dump E-222. General
engineering work in Quartermaster Depots near Mannheim was accomplished
and an open shelter in Dump E-222 was constructed. Established river
guages at Mannheim and Heidelberg. Supervised eight (3) factories in
Mannheim area until 290th Ehgr 0 3n assumed responsibility, 15 July 1945*
Operated quarries at Dossenheim and Bensheim and constructed a 470 foot
heav ponton bridge over Neckar River at Ladenburg. Reconnaissances of
assigned area for roads, railroads and quarries accomplished.
290th Engineer Jombat Battalion: Maintained roads in assigned
areas and improved roads from R63097I to R667978. Operated factories
in Mannheim area and maintained river guages in Mannheim and Heidelberg
areas.
Constructed a 620 foot heavy ponton bridge across the Neckar
River at Heidelberg.
Repaired American Red Cross warehouse at Mannheim.
