SuperHeRo
Put the HR in Hero
Growing up, I enjoyed my super heroes as much as the next guy. Sure, I liked some of them more than others and far be it for me to
take up space here to express my opinion on the whole Batman versus Superman controversy. If you want that answer, stick around
for the HR Happy Hour at the Conference and I may just reveal my choice….
I have to admit; I didn’t see today’s super hero thing coming. My super heroes were mostly action figures or me and my brother
playing in our Underoos (remember those, guys?). Yes, there were a few live action shows with super heroes, but they were lowbudget and campy at best and nothing at all like today’s blockbuster movies on the big screen.
Without a doubt, super heroes are big these days!
All of that said, it may seem a bit of a stretch to go from a trendy, cultural phenomenon to a theme for an HR conference. But is it
really a stretch? I think the HR profession can rightfully claim its proper place among the pantheon of super heroes. In defense of my
position, I offer the following:
Super heroes have extraordinary powers and abilities. You can’t judge an HR professional just by looking at them. All have
special talents. The diverse skill set of today’s HR professional is nothing short of extraordinary.
Super heroes have courage. It takes courage every day to succeed in the HR profession. Expectations for HR professionals
have never been higher. When you’re constantly under the microscope, pressure and demands are high.
Super heroes have a strong moral code. HR professionals do to. There’s a code that is shared by super heroes and HR
professionals about truth and justice, about doing the right thing, about caring.
Superman once said, "I think a hero is an ordinary individual who finds strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming
obstacles." Commissioner Gordon from the Batman series said, “You’re going to make a difference. A lot of times it won’t be huge, it
won’t be visible even. But it will matter just the same.”
The point is, we think all of you – the HR professionals of Metro Milwaukee – are super heroes. With humility, you make your families,
companies, and community a better place. Your unique set of talents and desire to become better have and will make a difference.
If you don’t believe that, I’ll invoke the words of Superman again, “You are much stronger than you think you are. Trust me.” You are,
as a group, a powerful force in Metro Milwaukee and we all know what comes with great power. Great responsibility. And that starts
with refining our skills and learning new ones and that’s what Spring Conference is all about !

This is an engaging workshop for attendees to
learn the 3 key areas of attracting and retaining
talent for their organization. These 3 core skills
will support future growth.
Upon communicating change to employees, did
you ever hear: "When is management going to
understand it is the real world down here?" How
about, "If my boss would just get off my back
and let me do my job, everything would be
okay!" How about, "Why can't they leave well
enough alone?" These expressions reflect
symptoms of employees not only resisting
change, but more importantly, leaders
potentially not fulfilling their responsibility in
communicating change. This presentation has
been designed to help leaders and professionals
communicate change and helping employees
overcome resistance. Common sense says, if
employees are good at resisting change, a
leader needs to be just as effective in getting
them to accepting change.
All of us struggle with the lifetime value of our
work. Why do we do what we do? This
workshop will focus on the personal satisfaction
that comes from truly developing people and
seeing them succeed. With a four decade
perspective of leadership, and using servant
leadership as a philosophical framework, this
presentation will help HR leaders grasp the
incredible importance of their work in the lives of
others.
Learning Objectives:
1. How to sell the role
2. Effective qualifying strategies
3. Better practices for transitioning prospect
into employment
Learning Objectives:
1. Recognize how a leader's behavior impacts
employee acceptance. Communicate
unpopular mandated changes.
2. Learn a method to confront employees who
resist change.
3. Communicate unpopular mandated
changes.
Learning Objectives:
1. Reflect on the philosophical foundations for
developing others.
2. Consider the satisfaction gained in
developing others.
3. Assess the steps for assessing one’s own
skills in developing others.

HR Superheros
Leading With The “Never Give Up” Perspective
Despite their super powers, super heroes have been known to take a terrible beating in some of their battles. Maybe you don’t have x-ray vision
or a cool utility belt, but you do have the one thing that every super hero has to have. You have the ability to get up and keep on fighting.
This program is about a “never give up” attitude, told using our speaker’s all too real experience. It’s a program about a daring plan to reunite
with two small children who were kidnapped and taken to the Middle East. No law required them to be returned!
In this journey, you’ll learn about the limits of resolve and the strength of convictions. You’ll learn about the principles of tenacity and persistence
and how these skills can help you as an HR professional and in everything you do.
Being a super hero means you have found and developed your special talent. All that talent matters little if you aren’t using it for good, not evil,
and if you give up the fight. This program is about applying your talent and tenacity toward excellence in HR, business strategy, leadership and
more!
The objectives of this program are to:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
Increase your leadership abilities through relationship building,
Improve your communication effectiveness with both management and staff,
Recognize when stress may be affecting business decisions,
Give you tools to reduce stress and increase focus,
Develop new approaches to long-term challenges through strategy, tenacity, and
Learn to grow, mentor and lead even during times of significant change.

overcoming adversity both professionally and personally.
