PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
It is hard to believe that March 28th was the first day of our
last nine weeks of the school year. It only seems like a
couple of months ago that we started this school year. Our
students are working hard every day to make sure they are
learning and doing their best work.
Having your children at school before 8:10 am helps them
to get a good start each morning. Students arriving after
8:10 will need to be escorted into the building and they will
be marked tardy. Every minute of the day counts towards
the success of your child. It is also very important that your
child is at school every day. Important instruction will
happen until the very last day of school on June 1st.
We are very proud of our third, fourth, and fifth graders
who are working to prepare for success on the state
STAAR tests. Remember the first tests for 4th and 5th
grades begin on March 29th and March 30th. The next
testing days will be May 9, 10, and 11. Remember that
there are no visitors allowed at school on testing days.

All Sheridan volunteers are invited to attend our annual appreciation
celebration on Thursday, May 12th at 1:00 pm in the library.
We will be honoring YOU for all the time you have given to help the
staff and students at Sheridan this year. Light snacks will be provided.
We will also have the nomination and election of officers for the
2016-2017 PTO Board members.
If you have volunteered in any way this year at Sheridan, we hope you
will attend.
We look forward to seeing everyone on May 12th at 1:00.

5th Grade Celebration Meeting

Each year the 5 grade class has a celebration party on the
last day of school as a way to celebrate their years at
Sheridan Elementary, as well as moving on to middle school.
We are now in the planning process and are encouraging all
parents that have a 5th grade student to attend the meetings.
Our next meeting will be April 20th at 6:00 pm in the library.
If you want to be part of this wonderful day, please help
us by attending the meeting. Only parents who are
volunteering will be allowed to attend the event.

2016 STAAR Test Schedule
Tuesday, March 29th – 4th grade Writing, 5th grade Math
Wednesday, March 30th – Reading, 5th grade
Monday, May 9th – Math 3rd and 4th grade
Tuesday, May 10th – Reading, 3rd and 4th grade
Wednesday, May 11th – Science 5th grade
Please mark these days on your calendar to make sure your
children are at school for testing days.
Makeup sessions are very limited and not allowed in certain
subjects.
It is very important that students attend the whole day on
the testing day.
No visitors will be allowed on testing days to
ensure a proper testing environment.

UPCOMING AUTHOR VISIT
Bruce Foster, paper engineer and designer of nearly 40
pop-up books, will visit our second, third, fourth, and fifth
graders on March 31. Order forms for autographed books
will be given to interested students after the visit. Book
orders are due April 8.
HORNED TOAD TALES READING INCENTIVE
The library’s Horned Toad Tales Reading Incentive
continues. It is designed for our third, fourth, and fifth
graders. Twenty (20) terrific recently published books have
been selected by Cy-Fair ISD librarians for the students in
these grade levels to read. Students have been given Texas
tracking sheets and book marks to keep track of the books
SHE
they have read. In May, prizes will be awarded to students
in each homeroom who have read the most
Horned Toad Tales.
FAMILY LIBRARY NIGHT
Our final Family Library Night for this school year is on
Monday, April 11th. Each family may check out five books.
Please remember that all books are checked out for 2
weeks. Students may not check out library books in school if
they have overdue books from Family Library Night.

From the Nurse
All medication must be brought to the clinic by
an adult. District policy does not allow students to
transport medication to and from school. This
includes cough drops/lozenges. Medication that is
not properly checked into the clinic will be
confiscated and held in the clinic and will not be
administered to the student.
Facts of lice:
Head lice are so easily spread that anyone can get
them. 6 to 12 million people will get lice each year.
Most of these will be children. There is no shame
because your child has head lice. Head lice are not
known to transmit disease, they are just itchy and an
annoyance. How are lice spread? Lice are spread by
direct head-to-head touching. They do not fly or
jump, but they crawl. Children at play have closer
contact than adults, so they’re more likely to get lice.
Head lice can be spread by sharing:
• Personal articles (clothing, combs,
headbands, hats and/or scarves).
• Towels, linens, pillows, carpeting and
naptime blankets.
• Stuffed toys, dolls and cloth toys.
• Earphones for a personal radio.
• Lockers or hanging clothes together on coat
hooks.
• School uniforms, costumes, or gym clothes.
Remedies:
Home remedies do little to get rid of lice. There are
several brands of lice shampoo that you can buy at
the store, as well as brands that need a prescription.
Talk with your own medical provider or the county
health department for assistance. Shampooing the
hair alone will not get rid of the lice! You must also
remove all of the nits, and clean the areas of the
house where the lice may be present. Cutting your
child’s hair or regular shampoo does little to treat
lice. Clothing, bedding and household items must be
cleaned to kill and remove all of the lice. Other
family members need to be checked for lice, and
treated if necessary.

SHERIDAN ELEMENTARY PTO
The SHERIDAN PTO works together as a group of parents, teachers, and staff helping to enrich the
education of the children at Sheridan Elementary School.
Nominations are now being accepted for the officers and chairpersons of the Sheridan Elementary PTO
Board for the 2016-2017 school year. Any person nominated for an Executive Board or Chairperson
Committee position on the PTO must be a current member in good standing of the SHERDIAN PTO per
bylaws.

Executive Board Positions
1. President
The President co-ordinates the work of all officers and committees; presides at all meetings of the
organization and the Executive Committee; will represent
SHERIDAN Elementary School at the District level when necessary.
2. Vice-President of Membership
Shall be in charge of the membership drive; prepare and maintain a membership roster; prepare and
distribute a telephone directory if needed that school year.
3. Vice-President of Fundraisers
Shall investigate options for major fundraisers to present to the Executive Board members for approval;
coordinate and oversee all Special Committees needed to assist him/her. Shall investigate options for
secondary fundraisers to present to the Executive Board member for approval
4. Vice-President of Volunteers
Shall oversee all committees for volunteer needs at SHERIDAN; focus on recruitment, retention and
recognition of volunteers. Shall be responsible for coordinating parent volunteers for events such as field
trips, field days, first day of school, fundraiser pick-up days, etc.
5. Secretary
The Secretary shall record and present for approval the minutes of all meetings of the Organization and
the PTO Board. The Secretary is responsible for any PTO Board correspondence and public relations
correspondence.
6. Treasurer
Shall along with the President propose an itemized budget for approval by the PTO Executive Board and
by the Organization; receive all monies of the Organization; keep accurate records of receipts and
expenditures; pay out funds in accordance with the approved budget; present a financial statement at
each meeting of the Organization and the PTO Board. The Treasurer shall complete all state and
federal tax forms as required by law.
