The American studio glass movement can
be traced to 1962, when Harvey Littleton, a
professor of ceramics at the University of
Wisconsin, had a dream to alter molten
glass into unique forms in a studio setting
and teach his techniques. For the first time in its 3,500-year history, glass production, that had been limited to factory settings, moved to the artists' studios and
became a part of an academic program in the fine arts. Since then, glass has become
the fastest growing studio art medium throughout the world. This book takes us
from the first workshop in a Toledo, Ohio garage, to reveal decade by decade the
unprecedented growth of studio glass. Through high-quality, detailed images and
stories, this retrospective of 50 top artists is a collector's dream. Noted art dealer
Ferdinand Hampson offers a unique perspective on this exciting evolution.

The Annual Boulder Junction
Antiques Show
Decorah, IA
Beginning at 1:00 P.M. Monday & 10:00 A.M. Tuesday
Sale held at Sweeney Auction Center, South Edge of Waukon, IA
The annual BOULDER JUNCTION ANTIQUES SHOW sponsored by the
Boulder Junction Lioness, will be held on July 12 and 13, 2013 at the Community Center
on Hwy M in beautiful Boulder Junction, Wisconsin. If you have never been to this lovely Northern Wisconsin town, you have missed one of the quaintest towns in the area. At
one time early on, it was known as Oxley, and there still are families of Oxleys and in
around the area. In fact, I met some of the Oxley families at the antiques show in
Minocqua, the July 6 & 7 weekend. Boulder Junction is full of gracious people, cute
shops, great eating places, wide streets, and everything you need to have a wonderful day.
There is great fishing, biking on the best trails the the north woods, a great nature hiking
area, many summer camps for youngsters from around the world, swimming and hunting
and the finest bird watching areas. How great is that?
The ANTIQUES SHOW & SALE is the best place to start your day. Dealers
from several states will have lots of furniture for your viewing and buying pleasure.
There will be oak, primitives, pine, early painted pieces, and walnut, lodge look and
country, formal and accessories of all kinds. There will be a great selection of
Native American pieces, garden furniture, fine jewelry and collectibles, textiles,
books, prints, maps, press glass, post cards and other ephemera. Dolls, toys lures,
sporting and advertising collectibles. Folk art, early lighting, kitchen collectibles
and tools, fine china, depression glass and flow blue china, Old Hickory furniture
and art. And much, much more.
This show is just jam packed with wonderful antiques. All this and air-conditioning too. It’s difficult to list all of the wonderful antiques you will find at this
show. Better not miss this one. There is something for everyone in every price
range, to fill out your collection or to start a new one. We call this the ultimate green.
There is plenty of parking, and on Friday the Lioness will have their famous bake
sale and luncheon for your pleasure, so come early and stay late and enjoy a fun day.
Admission is $5.00, children under 14 are free. Good for both days. Hours
are 9:00am - 4:00pm each day.

Toy Hunters Swarmed at Kalamazoo Toy Show
Article & Photos by Jack Kelly
“I’ve been on the road setting up at shows for nearly two weeks,” said
Dan Davis from Reno, Nev., adding “It’ll be good to go home after Kalamazoo.”
Davis wowed the crowds with a 14-inch-long Dolling Mercury gas-powered
1920s race car offered for $3,500. Folks “oohed and ahhed” over his pressed steel
Buddy L sprinkler truck, priced at $2,800.
Still another Buddy L toy, a 20-inch-long restored Shell gas truck, could be
enjoyed at your home for $800. It was shown by Roy Cassatta of Forest Park, Ill. At
the same spot, a two-piece tin 1932 Wyandotte Circus truck and trailer was priced at
$1,200.
Promotional car collectors swooped down on the booth of Bob Cline,
Woodstock, Ill., for his selection of 160 examples, many from his personal collection.
The 1949 to 1987 model cars could be taken home at prices ranging from $25 to $400
each. Of special interest were a 1958 Pontiac Bonneville Convertible tagged at $195
and the same car only in the hardtop version could be displayed on your shelf at $250.
Toy train dealer Randy Ramsey of
Glenn and Louise Hoffman traveled to the show from Marathon, Wis., to show

At least one father-grandson team was at the show. Randy Ramsey of Toldeo,
Ohio and 10-year-old Shawn showed off a broad selection of toy trains including a
collection of Lionel trains priced from $20 to $500 each. They priced a 1947
diecast Berkshire engine and tender for $495.
What does a auto body repair professional do after he retires the job? Howard
Hardy of Birmingham, Mich., turned to restoring toy cars! He said it took about
eight hours to restore a now-pristine 1936 Wyandotte toy auto and travel trailer,
which he offered for $550.
“It’s just a 10-minute drive to the show for me” said Russ Looker of
Kalamazoo, setting up with “close to 1,000” Hot Wheels cars priced from 50 cents
to $1,800 each. The big-ticket car was “a 1984 Mexican issue car” which the dealer said is “very hard to find.”
It was the third time setting up at Kalamazoo for Dudley Maddox of Kenosha,
Kid-size Raggedy Ann and Andy toys, Wis., showing cast metal early toys. “This one is rare,” said Dudley, pointing to a

$35 to $145 eacg was shown by Larry and Karilyn Brown of Monon, Ind. The couple
also showed off a selection of made-in-Japan tin airplanes priced from $100 to $700
each.
Michael Karberg of Schererville, Ind., mixed vintage advertising items with
toys at the May show. A late 1940s Buddy Lee doll with Lion Brand Uniform
advertising Gulf gasoline stood 13 inches tall and was priced at $1,250. A 1962

His advice for dealers thinking about November? “Sign up as soon as possible -- all
indications are it’ll be a sold-out event here at the Expo Center at the fairgrounds in
Kalamazoo.”

Dump Diggers Will Keynote 2013 RWCS Covention
Red Wing, MN - For decades
the Red Wing Pottery Dump Digger educational seminars have been standingroom-only at the annual Red Wing

With many groundbreaking,
exciting things from the past year to
report to Red Wing Collectors, the “diggers” will kick off the 2013 Convention “Diggin' Red Wing” - as the keynote presenters on Friday, July 11, at Red Wing
High School in Red Wing, Minn.
The keynote session will be a

Mathison.
Showers, who is known as the “Red Wing archeologist,” has more than 50 years of
dump-digging stories to share. Nygaard joined Showers in the dump almost 40 years ago.
Together Showers and Nygaard have shepherded many interested diggers, sharing their
knowledge and enthusiasm with others.
Paul Boudin and Connie Mathison joined Showers and Nygaard shortly after joining
the RWCS in 2007.
The keynote presentation will give convention attendees an opportunity to experience the lively discussion led by Glenn Beall, education manager. As moderator, Beall will
guide the conversation and give each “digger” an opportunity to share experiences in the pottery dump and talk about their favorite finds. It'll be a rare peek, providing a new look at the
relationship of these dump enthusiasts.
Convention attendees are encouraged to submit their questions in advance to either
Executive Director Stacy Wegner, [email protected], or education manager
Glenn Beall, [email protected] . Submitted questions will be used in the
forum discussion and in the question and answer session.
To learn more about the keynote session presenters, be sure to pick up the
Convention Supplement and read all the details. Convention supplements will be available
starting at pre-registration on Wednesday, July 10, at the Pottery Place Annex, or at Red Wing
High School throughout the convention. The Convention Supplement will also be inserted in
the Red Wing Republican Eagle on July 10.
