September 2013 - Olympia Fields Country Club
September 2013
Along with the many other new members welcomed to membership at Olympia Fields Country Club so far this season, one new member goes in the record books (if there is such a thing for private clubs!) Mike Donnelly, new Na onal Member, has been welcomed to the Club. He joins brothers Tom and Dan, thus becoming the first set of iden cal triplets to be members at the same private country club. Brothers Tom and Dan have been members for several years. Mike, who lives in Wisconsin, can now boast his membership as well. Don’t worry if you can’t tell which Donnelly is which...I understand they all answer to Tom, Mike or Dan, something they have done all their lives since people have a tough me telling them apart. 2013 Officers

672 Every year, the club hires an army of part me, seasonal staff. Many of them are students, teachers or career changers who come to Olympia Fields Country Club with different talents and skill sets. I want to take a moment to thank each of them for their hard work in making this season very successful. The Club’s full me, year‐round staff will con nue giving members the great service and a en on to detail throughout the rest of the season. That said, you s ll have a few months remaining in which to enjoy OFCC. The restaurants menus will con nue to evolve and change through the end of summer and fall. The “Candlelight Dining Series” will be offered through November, and there are some impressive wine dinners planned as well. As we start to move towards autumn, remember that the Club is also a great place to hold board mee ngs, conferences and working lunches/
dinners. Our Catering Department is at your disposal. Wireless connec vity, conference phones and audio/visual equipment are all available to make your mee ng a success. These features, along with our 25 guest rooms make Olympia Fields Country Club the perfect place for a Corporate Retreat. From September 12‐15 the 8th edi on of the Figh ng Illini Invita onal will be contested on the North Course. The Figh ng Illini has quickly be‐
come one of the premier events on the college calendar for the highest level of compe on in the college ranks. Coach Mike Small has done an outstanding job of eleva ng the University of Illi‐
nois golf team to one of the top 10 programs in the country as exemplified by their runner‐up fin‐
ish to Alabama in the finals of the NCAA champi‐
onship last spring. The team also won the Big Ten Championship for an unprecedented 5th me in a row. Before Coach Small hit the scene, Illinois had not won a Big Ten Championship since 1951! Over the past seven years, four par cipants have gone on to become a PGA Tour Champions: Rickie Fowler, Russell Henley, Jonas Blixt, and Harris English. Peter Uihlein was a winner on the Euro‐
pean Tour earlier this year. Past par cipants have competed on at least 16 different tours around the world, including the PGA Tour, European Tour, Web.com tour, Challenge tour, PGA Tour Canada and South America, PGA Tour of Australa‐
sia, European Alps Tour, NGA Tour, eGolf Tour, Asian Tour, Gateway Tour, Adams Golf Tour, Peach State tour, Emerald Coast tour, and the Dakotas’s tour. Our own Max Scodro is a past par cipant in the Figh ng Illini and he has since won both the Illinois and Arizona Opens. He is now compe ng on the PGA Tour La n America and the Canadian Tour. Former Illinois players that are currently playing on the PGA Tour in‐
clude Sco Langley, Luke Guthrie, D.A. Points, and Steve Stricker. Two of the last three NCAA Individual Champions played for the University of Illinois. When you think of all the players in the Sunbelt states of California, Arizona, Texas, and Florida that sta s c is astounding. Six out of the ten players on the 2013 Walker Cup Team have played in the Figh ng Illini Invita on‐
al. This is the type of event that furthers our rep‐
uta on as a “Host to Champions” as many future champions are also being bred on the fairways of Olympia Fields. Come on out this September to watch these fu‐
ture stars compete. Be er yet, call Tournament Chairman, Dave Brown, (815‐641‐1972) to volun‐
teer some me and become a part of what has become one of the premier events in college golf. OFCC Fighting Illini Tennis Invitational

Fourth of July
Fun on the Courts
What a great summer we had for tennis, water fun, and golf here at Olympia Fields! We want to thank each and every one of our members, especially those who have par cipated in our program. How‐
ever, we have received so many accolades from all of our members that we are humbled and thankful for total club support. Golf is definitely King, but we always say without the Queen, life would be tough in the kingdom! Par cipa on was up and we are very happy to say that tennis is alive and well. July was a busy month. The Fourth of July celebra‐
on brought out couples for our annual adult mixed. The points were played enthusias cally under the watchful eye of the hovering helicopter overhead! The games for the juniors concluded the fun day with members and guests alike. Our wom‐
en’s team and junior team were victorious against Flossmoor CC this month and it was such a joy to see the enthusiasm and improvement in our play‐
ers. Our Ladies Guest Day concluded July, and we are happy to say had more par cipants than usual. It may have been an unpredictable and inconsistent summer weather wise but it did not adversely affect our program at all. In fact, with the addi on of Kids Club tennis and the popularity of Cardio Tennis, we look forward to a bright future for ten‐
nis in our wonderful facility. August is an interes ng month. It is the me for pulling back and returning to school for many of our families. This is true for our wonderful staff as well. Many will be going back to college. We will miss our staff, but our courts will remain open for play through October. So there is a lot of Fall ten‐
nis to come. Many indoor clubs begin right a er Labor Day, but we s ll will offer Cardio on M, W, and F at 9. Morning lessons can be accommodated by Wayne Muskievicz
in September as well as the weekends. For our busy families, weekends have usually been strong and consistent. There is plenty to do here at the Club this month. The summer program concludes August 15th with cer ficates and “prac ce board winners” prizes given out at the last lesson. The summer has gone by too fast! Coming in September is the Illini Golf and Tennis Invi‐
ta onal. This event will take place Thursday, Sep‐
tember 12th with member clinic and dinner. Friday, September 13th thru Sunday, September 15th the teams will play singles and doubles. The tennis event was the first of its kind on clay, and this year the Illini have invited Notre Dame, Texas, Kentucky, and the defending NCAA Champion University of Virginia! The weather is usually great, and the tennis will be absolutely sensa onal! Invite your friends and neighbors for a great college weekend of tennis and golf. Many of our members are housing players, which help make this event so special for players and members alike! Tennis season is s ll here! Come on out and enjoy! The chip shot can be very frustra ng if the golf club is not in the correct posi on on the way back. In the pictures below the sta on set up is to make sure the club is in the correct posi on to properly strike the ball on the down swing. The angle of the s ck driven into the ground rep‐
resents the plane or path of the club. In picture A the club is underneath the plane causing the club to either hit the ground before the ball on the downswing or travel up to avoid the ground causing the strike to be too thin. This is the most common error in the short game. In picture B the club is on plane or slightly above plane, providing for a much be er opportunity to strike the ball. This allows the strike to be compressed using the sha of the club rather than flipping the face of the golf club. As see in the August 2013 issue of
* BEST PUTTING EXHIBITION Has to be 45-year old Jerry Barber at Olympia Fields in 1961. Three monsters on the last three holes of regulation—20 feet for birdie, 40 feet for par
and 60 feet for birdie—got him a tie with Don January, who had been rehearsing his victory speech. Then Barber did it again in the playoff to win
with a 67 to January’s 68. Barber also tied Gene Sarazan as shortest PGA
winner at 5-feet-5 1/2.
