WRD500 and WRD250
DATA
SHEET
No.T135
DESCRIPTION
MEC’s latest additions to the waveguide family are the WRD500 and WRD250 sizes. These typically cover a broad
frequency bandwidth, 3.6:1 and 4:1, respectively, with low VSWR and attenuation. These waveguide sizes are used in our
broadband, high power components and can be used on any other waveguide assembly or component.
The flanges are available in aluminum or brass in cover or gasket grooved options. They are made to order and are
available with short lead time. These products may be customized to suit individual requirements.

DOUBLE-RIDGE & MEC FLATGUIDE
FLANGES & WAVEGUIDE
®
DATA
SHEET
No.T22D
1 of 8
DESCRIPTION
As a prime designer and producer of waveguide assemblies and passive components,
MEC maintains a complete inventory of Aluminum flanges and waveguide extrusion
from 1 to 40 GHz in Double-Ridge and in MEC FLATGUIDE ® which is briefly
described on page 6.
Flanges available include all combinations of cover or gasket faces with tapped,
clearance, alternate or captive holes. These have long been the industries standard
and were later incorporated in MIL-F-39000/3B for Double-Ridge and MIL-F3922/75B for MEC FLATGUIDE®. Additionally, MEC has developed many specialpurpose flanges such as metrics, quick-disconnects and slim line styles for tight
quarters.
Also available are waveguide extrusions such as those listed in MIL-W-23351/4B for
Double-Ridge and MIL-W-85/4C for MEC FLATGUIDE®, as well as flexible
waveguide and other sizes custom-designed by MEC for specific frequency bands and
characteristics.
Pages 1 to 6 show the various flange outlines and dimensions while pages 7 and 8
contain useful reference information to assist the system designer in comparing and
selecting the best wave-guide/flange combination in this popular series.

MEC FLATGUIDE® FLANGES
MEC FLATGUIDE® is reduced-height rectangular waveguide developed
by MEC which, under certain restrictions, can have broad frequency
bands comparable to double-ridge waveguide with about half the
insertion loss. Flatguide may be a superior alternative to double-ridge in
applications where:
(1) Bandwidth is between 1.7:1 to 2.4:1,
(2) Attenuation loss is critical and
(3) Long and reasonably straight runs are present.
To benefit from the lower loss of flatguide without exciting the
higher order. TE20 mode, the number of bends and twists must
be minimized and their sharpness reduced by using a large bend
radius typically 2 to 5 times the broadwall or “a” dimension.
Page 8 provides quantitative data for comparing
characteristics of doubleridge and MEC FLATGUIDE. ®
the
Our engineering department would be happy to analyze your specific
application and recommend the best waveguide, existing or customdesigned.

DOUBLE-RIDGE TO RECTANGULAR WAVEGUIDE
TRANSITIONS
R30 SERIES
DATA
SHEET
No. T8F
1 of 2
• LOW VSWR
• WIDE SELECTION
• FUNDAMENTAL & OVER-MODED TYPES
DESCRIPTION
These precisely machined transitions allow
connection of double-ridge waveguides to
rectangular waveguides or other ridge guides
with low insertion loss and good match. In the
overlapping frequency band common to both
waveguides, VSWR is 1.06:1 max.
These transitions are most suitable for
laboratory set-ups to measure double-ridge
components with rectangular waveguide test
equipment and vice versa. Special narrow
frequency bands may be requested to yet more
stringent requirements.
Matched transitions are also offered which
transform a ridge waveguide into several
rectangular waveguides operating ABOVE the
fundamental frequency band of the ridge
guide. Such over-moded transformers are
needed in order to measure suppression
characteristics of harmonic absorption filters
and other wideband components. Coverage is
available up to the second and third harmonic
of the double-ridge fundamental frequency
band. Excitation of higher order modes in the
transitions themselves is minimized so as not to
degrade measurement accuracy.
The attached table lists the transition model
numbers and maximum lengths for the
fundamental and over-moded types.
Material is aluminum. Finish is chromate
conversion per MIL-C-5541, Class 3, painted
with gray epoxy enamel. Other lengths, bands
and types may also be requested.

units to operate over a multi-octave band at high
power levels, making them ideal for EW/ECM
applications where transmission line routing space is
at a premium.

POWER SAMPLERS
R50 SERIES
R50-S SERIES
DATA
SHEET
No. T15E
• LOW VSWR
• FULL BAND
• FLAT COUPLING
DESCRIPTION
MEC R50 Series samplers provide a convenient method of
monitoring an RF signal with almost no impact on its VSWR or
insertion loss. However, unlike more complex directional couplers,
these samplers have no inherent directivity and equally sample
signals propagating in either direction. They are therefore more
appropriate in well-matched transmission lines.
R50-( )-3
R51-( )-N
Samplers are ideal for monitoring frequency, power level, in
feedback loops and as diagnostics ports Samplers may also be
integrated into to other components such as high power
terminations, waveguide assemblies and coaxial adapters thus
eliminating a flange junction.
The standard length R50 Series samplers have cover flanges with
alternate tapped and clearance holes (C-1), while the shorter R50-S
series have cover flanges, all tapped (C-2). A selection of coaxial
connectors is available covering a full range of power levels,
frequency bands and environments.
Materials is aluminum, finish is chromate conversion per MIL-C-5541,
Class 3 and paint is gray epoxy enamel.

DESCRIPTION
The R100 Series magic tee is a versatile four-port hybrid which can vectorially add,
subtract or divide two signals. In its most common use, it splits an input signal at the H
or sum-port into two outputs of equal amplitude and phase at the colinear ports, with
typical tracking of .3dB and 5º. Used in reverse, the tee may also combine two in-phase
or out-of-phase signals into a common output with combined loss under 0.3 dB.
For low and medium-power cases not requiring out-of-phase splitting or combining, the R100-L series may be used. It has the E or difference port internally
terminated leaving only three accessible, well-matched ports.
Due to their outstanding electrical characteristics and superior construction, MEC’s magic tees have been selected for the harshest environments of ECM
systems onboard many of the most advanced military aircraft. They exceed the requirements of MIL-E-5400 for non-conditioned compartments and have
undergone extensive qualification testing including high power, temperature, altitude, vibration, shock, humidity, salt spray, sand, and dust.
R100 magic tees are available with many options including other mechanical configurations, pressure sealing, higher power versions and a large assortment of
waveguide flanges or coaxial connectors. They may also be networked together into N-way divider/combiner assemblies for high power summing and phasedarray applications.
Material is aluminum, flanges are cover type all tap, finish is chromate conversion per MIL-C-5541, Class 3 and paint is high temperature black epoxy enamel.

DOUBLE-RIDGE WAVEGUIDE
BROADWALL DIRECTIONAL COUPLERS
DATA
SHEET
No. T12E
1 of 2
• HIGH DIRECTIVITY OR
EXTRA HIGH
DIRECTIVITY
• BUILT TO LAST
DESCRIPTION
These directional couplers consist of double-ridge primary and
secondary waveguides sharing a common broadwall where multi-hole
arrays provide the required coupling level in the forward direction
relative to the input wave and high directivity in the reverse direction.
In the basic R160 series, the primary waveguide is flanged at both ends
with excellent VSWR and loss characteristics while the secondary has a
precision internal termination at its isolated end and a well-matched
coaxial output at the coupled port suitable for attaching a video crystal
detector or power monitor. In the H-bend style, a flange output is
provided in place of the connector for applications requiring a
waveguide coupled port.
The dual R200 series ahas two coupled secondaries to independently
monitor both the forward and reverse waves with the same or different
coupling level on each side.
Broadwall couplers are capable of superior directivity due to the large
number of coupling holes which can be used. As such, they are the
heart of any reflectometer test stand measuring the reflection of
double-ridge components. Given the importance of directivity, MEC
offers two options: the standard R160 & R200 with minimum
directivity of 30 dB adequate for most laboratory measurements of
VSWR down to about 1.12:1 and the R160A series with minimum
directivity of 38 dB to measure VSWR levels as low as 1.04:1 or to
perform measurements requiring high precision such as in standards
labs and to calibrate other devices.
Available options which can be provided upon request include
coupling levels as tight as 3 dB and as loose as 80dB, high power
versions for peak and CW transmitter stands, various mechanical
configurations, compact versions, pressure sealing and a large
assortment of waveguide flanges and coaxial connectors.
While most couplers of this type are made of waveguide extrusions and
discrete flanges which are joined together by dip-brazing. MEC’s
couplers are fabricated as an integral unit to minimize the number of
leaky seams, improve dimensional control, preserve surface finish and
prevent internal distortions. The result is a sturdy unit with superior
electrical performance well suited for many years of rough service on
the bench or in the field.
Flanges are cover type with alternate tapped and clearance holes.
Coaxial connectors are passivated stainless steel and solidly anchored
into the body. Finish is chromate conversion per MIL-C-5541, Class 3
and paint is gray epoxy enamel

SLIDING AND FIXED MISMATCHES
R280 SERIES
DATA
SHEET
No. T26C
• OCTAVE BANDWIDTH
• ADJUSTABLE PHASE
• HIGH POWER DESCRIPTION
DESCRIPTION
The MEC R280 Series of Standard Mismatches is
designed to produce a constant VSWR over an octave
or more in frequency bandwidth. Both Low Power (L)
and High Power (H) units are available with Fixed
Mismatches (FM). The Low Power (L) units are also
made with Sliding Mismatches (SM), permitting phase
adjustment over a half waveguide wavelength at the
lowest operating frequency. VSWR accuracy of all
models is within 1%.
Applications include calibration of slotted lines, reflectometer
systems and similar set-ups, simulation of antenna impedance in
equipment under development, testing of microwave tubes with
variable phase terminations, etc.
A
The waveguide is aluminum with MEC Series C-1 flanges (cover type with alternate tapped and clearance holes). The
mismatched sliding elements are rigidly attached and include a fastening nut for locking at any desired setting. Units are
rugged and suitable for use as calibration standards. Body finish is chromate conversion per MIL-C-5541, Class 3, painted
with epoxy enamel on external non-mating surfaces.

DOUBLE RIDGE WAVEGUIDE
DIRECTIONAL COUPLERS
R600 SERIES
R620 SERIES
DATA
SHEET
No. T68C
• SUPERIOR TRACKING
• OUT-OF-BAND REJECTION
• SUPER-FLAT COUPLING
DESCRIPTION
MEC Ultra-Flat Directional Couplers are compact, in-line devices with
extremely flat coupling over octave bands or up to the full waveguide range.
Another significant feature is that coupling falls off sharply above the
fundamental frequency band, making them more suited to power sampling in
systems where harmonic energy is non-negligible such as in wideband TWT
outputs. By discriminating against harmonic power, they result in greater
sampling accuracy compared to cross-guides and other coupler types.
The coupling response can be finely tailored to yield best flatness, directivity,
unit-to-unit tracking or even exhibit a tilt across the band, making these versatile
couplers useful for system and laboratory applications.
Standard flanges are cover with tapped holes. Material is aluminum. Finish is
chromate conversion per MIL-C-5541, Class 3 gray epoxy enamel.

DESCRIPTION
MEC Reflectometer Test Sets reduce set-up time while facilitating state-of-the-art resolution broadband return and insertion loss measurements on double-ridge waveguide and coaxial components. Coaxial input is provided via a broadband, low VSWR Waveguide-to-Coaxial Adapter for connection to a sweep signal source. This is followed by a low loss
broadband Absorption Filter which suppresses harmonic and spurious frequencies often found in sweep signal sources.
Because of this high attenuation (typically 50 dB), fine grain is reduced over the full waveguide band, permitting insertion
loss resolution in the order of 0.1 dB to be easily measured. A 20 dB Leveling Coupler is next included to supply a source
of feedback for the sweep oscillator. The Test Set is completed by a 10 dB high directivity broadband Reflectometer
Coupler with MEC-C1 flange (cover type with alternate tapped and clearance holes) to which the device under test is
attached for return or insertion loss measurements. Assemblies are precision machined from aluminum with coaxial
connectors of stainless steel. Finish is chromate conversion with gray epoxy enamel.
