PS18 Summer Squares Contemporary Sampler Teaching Guide Painted Stitches! It is important to stitch this canvas on stretcher bars. The decorative needlepoint stitches will pull in different directions. The tight canvas will help keep the stitches smooth and maintain consistent tension. I use a small magnet to hold my needle on all my needlepoint canvases. I always keep the magnet in the upper left corner. This way I know which side is the top. Or write "Top" on the top of the canvas. It is very important to not get confused and turn the canvas by accident. If this happens your decorative stitches will be going in the wrong direction. Thread Pull: I pulled two contrasting types of threads for Summer Squares. All the squares are outlined with Royal Blue and White lines. I chose Caron Snow to give the canvas a splash of summer sparkle. Then I pulled the Vineyard Silk colors for the decorative stitches. The Vineyard Silk texture gives a smooth silk sheen to the outlined stitches. Both threads are easy to stitch. I believe this is important since I want the stitcher to concentrate on learning the stitches not to try to handle more difficult threads. © 2012 Barbara Bergsten Designs PS18 Summer Squares www.barbarabergstendesigns.com pg. 3 Teaching PS18 Summer Squares Contemporary Sampler It is important to stitch this canvas in order. Every stitch area is labeled with a letter so proceed alphabetically. Each needlepoint stitch builds on the steps learned from the previous stitch. All the stitch steps are painted on the canvas with specific colors to highlight each stitch step. The compensation has been painted on the canvas. Start Step 1 on the largest area. This will develop a rhythm before coming to the compensating stitches. It is best to complete all of Step 1 stitches in an area. Then return to stitch Step 2 and the stitch will magically appear. Stitch information, i.e. type, texture, pattern and thread count area, is provided for each decorative needlepoint stitch. Over, i.e. 1, 2 or 3 refers to "over" that number of mesh thread intersections. Always count mesh thread intersections not holes in the canvas. Follow the colors, diagrams and directions and you will have a needlepoint canvas that shimmers and shines with success. Taking you from basketweave to beyond!
