Public Notice for Category B Project Evaluation
and Minor Boundary Amendment
Ontario Parks and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) invite public
comment on a proposal to develop day use infrastructure and to close and rehabilitate
two existing parking areas in Komoka Provincial Park. The project areas are 1) a former
agricultural field located on Gideon Drive approximately 600 metres west of Woodhull
Road and 2) the former gravel extraction area east of Komoka Road and north of the
Thames River.
The development project will involve the construction of two new parking areas to
accommodate existing and future use, as well as washroom facilities and waste collection,
self-interpretive signage and minor trail development. The existing parking areas located
along Oxford Street and Gideon Drive will be closed, and rehabilitated, to address
ongoing traffic safety and theft/vandalism issues.
All work is proposed to occur within the appropriate timing windows to minimize impacts
to species and habitat. Overall net positive environmental effects are anticipated as the
projects are expected to improve operation of the park, along with ecosystem productivity
following the rehabilitation of the existing parking areas.
Comments must be received within the 30-day comment period, which expires on
October 30, 2015.
This proposal is being evaluated as a Category B project under A Class Environmental
Assessment for Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves. A Notice of Completion will
be sent to those who submit comments or request further notice when the project
evaluation is finished. MNRF may proceed to implement the project without issuing a
further general notice.
This notice also serves as notification that Ontario Parks intends to process a minor
boundary amendment to regulate two provincially acquired parcels as part of the park
under the Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves Act. These initiatives are enabled
in the Komoka Park Management Plan (2010).
