Former Culver Community High School student’s remarkable
journey grows from launching a book to launching an island
Among the many accomplishments
of the graduates of Culver Community
High School through the decades, Tonia
Allen Gould may be in a rather unique
category. Launching her own marketing company? Check. Authoring a children’s book? Check again. Parlaying
that children’s book into an ecotourismoriented tropical island geared towards
helping Third World children and educating American youth — that might be
a tough one to beat.
What makes Gould’s story all the more
remarkable is the role Culver Community (and Plymouth) schools and teachers played in it, and the difficult odds
Gould overcame in order to be where
she is now.
Tonia Allen Gould grew up both in
Plymouth and Culver, attending school
in both communities, though she graduated from Culver Community High
School after two years of attending classes there.
Gould’s father was a worker for the
state highway department and, she says,
she grew up well below the poverty line.
Her home situation also led to Gould
being placed in foster care at age 15
with a well-known Culver family at the
time, that of Bud Cartwright. Cartwright
was being transferred out of Indiana at
the time, however, so Gould’s stay was
short-lived.

At the time, Gould was part of the staff
of CCHS’ monthly newspaper, The Caval Crier, then (as now) under the watchful eye of English teacher Vickie Benner.
When Gould reported to Benner that
her father wouldn’t allow her to walk
the streets of town to collect advertising
money from Culver businesses, Benner
made some inquiries with CCHS guidance counselor Brenda Sheldon.
“One thing led to another and Brenda
mentioned my foster care,” Gould recalls, “which led Larry and Vickie Benner to start figuring out how to go about
getting me (as a foster daughter).”
Gould would live with the Benners’
for about a year, and during that time,
she says “they taught me about consistency and that I didn’t have to come
home to a volatile environment.

Lake Max Film Fest/Gift of Warmth to return Labor Day weekend
The Lake Maxinkuckee "Gift of Warmth" Film Festival will return over Labor Day weekend, combining Friday evening's annual fund-raising event with Saturday's
evening of activities, including a movie on the big screen
in the park. And, as in years past, it's all geared towards
collecting gently used items of clothing and financial
contributions to help children in needy families in the
Culver area stay warm this winter.
The Friday evening, Sept. 4, Gift of Warmth event is
the committee's fundraiser for which members have sent
out letters to previous patrons as well as several new
names of people who have not yet participated, according
to Katy Lewellan, co-chair this year along with Connie
Deery. That event will feature short student films by both
Indiana and Purdue University students, and the audience
will vote on their favorites.
According to Lewellan, "It's akin to a Visual Arts version of the storied Oaken Bucket rivalry! This event is for
donor-patrons only and seating is very limited. The funds
raised from that portion of our weekend film festival will
be used for local families in need of a little help with
heating expenses during the winter."
The Saturday, Sept. 5 event at the Town Park is for the
entire community and will feature entertainment such as
the Culver Academies band led by Bill Browne, singer
Taylor Smith, and more. Served will be the event's traditional pulled pork sandwiches and hot dogs, with dessert
hosted by Culver's Antiquarian & Historical Society.
This year's featured movie is the classic "Field of
Dreams," so people can wear their favorite baseball
team's shirt or hat if they want and be ready to sing "Take
Me Out to the Ballgame" during the 7th Inning Stretch,
adds Lewellan. And this year, the Culver Beard Club will
be assisting the Gift of Warmth committee during the Saturday festivities.
"All we request for Saturday evening admission to
dinner, entertainment, and the movie is that each person
bring a new or gently used article of warm outer clothing
for children: coats, hats, scarves, gloves, boots, gloves,
all are appropriate," Lewellan explains. "This winter apparel goes to local children, and their teachers remark
every year that it makes an enormous difference when a
student arrives at school warmly clothed."
It should be noted that the Saturday event in the park
will be cancelled if rain and thunder are in the area. There
will be no rain date.
Details as to the schedule of events for the festival will
appear closer to the event itself, in The Culver Citizen.

The Class of 1940 —

that would soon envelop
America — was the first
to graduate from the new
school building, which
had been dedicated in
November 1939.
Fourteen new class-
mates were transferred
in from LaPaz, Lakeville,
Bourbon, Rochester, Etna
Green and Madison for
their senior year. Those
students joined the 34
current students, combining for a total of 48 members in the Class of 1940.

Lake and River Enhancement
program grants awarded
Contributed artiCle
BREMEN — New grants for the care
of Indiana’s water bodies — including one in Marshall County — totaling
$1,290,880 have been awarded through
the Lake and River Enhancement
(LARE) program in the DNR Division of
Fish & Wildlife.
Marshall County’s Yellow River was
earmarked for $50,000 for design/build
work, according to DNR.
The grants help fund 33 projects in 26
counties.
Local sponsors submit applications
for LARE assistance and commit to
sharing a portion of the total cost.
DNR’s share comes from a fee paid
annually by boat owners when registering their boats with the Bureau of Motor
; Vehicles.
The new grants include projects to

control erosion and enhance aquatic
habitat on rivers and lakes.
Thirteen grants for watershed land
treatment were awarded to County
Soil and Water Conservation Districts
(SWCDs) to complement their efforts
with local landowners to reduce sediment and nutrient runoff. Preventing
these pollutants from entering water
is more economical and effective than
trying to remove them from lakes and
streams.
“We are pleased to partner with the
sponsoring organizations at the local
level, and this cooperation helps create
improved recreational opportunities for
boating and fishing,” said Mark Reiter,
DNR Division of Fish & Wildlife director. “Enhancing habitat for fish and
in other organisms while addressing erosion
is a clear win-win for both the resources
and the citizens of Indiana.”

Pepper
Pepper is a very sweet older lab mix who loves to be by his people. He is around 10
years old (born approx 2005), he weighs 80lbs, is crate trained and housebroken. His
feet are a little deformed, but he can get around OK, if not a little awkwardly. Because of
the deformity, his front legs bow out a little. He’s on a liquid and tablet/chewable for joint
support to help him with this. Pepper does need to go to a home with no children. He does
well with other dogs and cats. He is food motivated, He sits on command. He would make
a wonderful companion for someone who loves labs and seniors and have that desire to
give quality of life to end of life. He walks with his foster everywhere - from anywhere inside
the house to outside on the farm, even if it’s long distance. When he’s tired, he’ll simply
lie down. He is very good about taking his medicine for joint pain - almost like it’s a treat.
Very loving big dog that likes to simply “hang” with you. All dogs are spayed/neutered, up
to date on vaccines, heartworm tested, on heartworm prevention, and microchipped before
adoption. Adoption Fee: $100
For more information about adopting or fostering this dog; please contact Heartland

Sue Collins from Plymouth was chosen as the featured quilter for August with her vibrantly
colored “day Lilies with Pansies” wall hanging. this brilliantly-hued quilt just makes you want
to smile. the vivid oranges and wine with a splash of yellow and green makes this small quilt a
one of a kind.
Made of clear plastic, the aligners are custom-fit to you.
To plan your treatment, we’ll first discuss your goals for your
smile, and determine if Invisalign® is appropriate for your
case.
Then, we’ll take x-rays and a photo of your smile.
We’ll also take impressions of your teeth.
We’ll use your custom
models to create your
treatment plan.
The Invisalign® software
allows us to see how your
teeth will move into their
final positions.
You will receive a sequence
of aligners designed to move your teeth through each stage of
your treatment.
Treatment time varies, but most people receive 20 or 30 sets
of aligners.
You’ll wear each set of aligners for about two weeks, and then
replace them with the next set in the series.
Invisalign® is good for professionals who want to minimize
the
apperance
of
braces.
Because
they’re
removable,
you take them out to
eat, brush, and floss.
They don’t have any
metal, making them
more comfortable than
traditional braces.
Invisalign® can be a
good choice to help
gte your teeth in their
healthy alignment, and
give you a beautiful
smile.
