McCord Mustang Newsletter May 2016.pub
It is so wonderful to finally have the beautiful spring weather with us as I write this newsletter! This is always an exciting time of year in school; students are deep in their learning with engaging projects and activities. It was Staff Appreciation Week last week at McCord School. I want say how thankful I am for our McCord School’s faculty and staff! Their commitment to students and their learning is unparalleled. Every day, I am awestruck by the rigor and creativity of their teaching, and inspired by the love and support they provide for each of their students. McCord teachers and staff strive to help each child grow uniquely, celebrating each small learning step. Their commitment for every student is supported by the finest collegiality and teamwork around. We are so fortunate to have such a dedicated and talented teaching staff for our student community. Please join me in proudly recognizing and warmly thanking our teachers and staff for all they do to help every child learn and grow! I would like to also underscore my sincere appreciation for Health Aide Sue Ficker. This past week we had School Nurse’s & Health Aide’s Day. Mrs. Ficker supports all of our students, staff and families with her expert care and warm understanding. Every day I am so grateful for Mrs. Ficker’s care of all of our students. Please join me in sincerely thanking her for her work! Our Science Fair was a HUGE Success! We loved seeing all of the projects and were pleasantly surprised to see explorations that we had not seen before! We are thrilled that this fair gave students an opportunity to collaborate on projects where they investigated something they were wondering about. Hats off to our budding scientists!!! Our Book Fair was visited by many students and families. We are very pleased with the number of students participating in increasing their reading libraries at home. A big thank you to our PFC volunteers for setting up and working our book fair for our students. PFC Volunteers needed for 2016-2017 school year. Our PFC got off to a great start this year. We are seeking even more parent volunteers to help organize committees and events at McCord School. If you are interested in being a volunteer please feel free to contact me. Any time that you are available is valuable and will be greatly appreciated. Please consider sharing your time with us. Spring Fever---We are entering the last weeks of school and there are many wonderful learning activities planned for all students. With the change in the weather and the increase in student activities we are seeing some overall changes in the students. Behavior is a little looser, homework is being missed and overall students appear to be ready for a summer break. The teachers and I have talked with students reminding them that we are looking for their best behavior in the classrooms, playground, cafeteria, hallways and all areas of their school day. We expect all students to behave in a respectful, responsible, and safe manner. We are proud of them and their accomplishments and encourage students to finish out their school year doing their best! Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to seeing you at one of the upcoming events as the school year comes to a close. Thank you for a great year Mustang Parents! The month of May is a busy one and will be over in a blink of an eye too! I want to thank everyone for their support at home to maximize your child's learning throughout their Kindergarten learning experience. Your child has blossomed so much since the beginning of the year in all aspects of the curriculum. In order to keep their learning growing, we are excited to have another ParentInvolvement Day on May 19th. You will receive fun ideas on how to keep your child's learning progressing throughout the summer, and we will end the afternoon with a short performance in the gym to acknowledge their hard work. I have loved being their teacher this year and I wish them all a fun and safe summer and much success next year in First Grade! Love, Ms. Horan Hello! Room 108 Families, It's hard to believe the school year is coming to a close. I will be gathering many of our classroom projects to send home. Take the time to review things with your child, especially my comments and the “I can” checklists. Take notice with your child the improvements they have made from the beginning of the year to the end. The academic growth in Kindergarten is astounding-celebrate how well your child did! The first grade teachers here at McCord will be very impressed with their upcoming class. Relax and be safe this summer. See you all next year. Mrs. Allen Hello! Room 103 Families, It is hard to believe how quickly the weeks are flying by and how the end of the school year is fast approaching. Our classroom will be focusing heavily on reinforcing the key skills that students will need to be successful in their next grade. In reading, we will be finishing up our last unit in the Wonders Reading Series. We will be working on irregular vowel patterns and silent letters. Please be sure to read their word lists with them every night because these words can be quite tricky to remember. In math, we be focusing on telling time, graphing, money, and continued practice on adding and subtracting. Second graders will learn to tell time to the quarter hour while first grade will learn how to tell time to the hour and half hour. As the year comes to a close, I remind you to please read nightly with your child. Just ten to fifteen minutes a night can really make a difference. Continue to work on reading throughout the summer so that when students return they don't lose the skills that they worked so hard for this school year. At the end of the year, I like to send summer work packets home with your child. I try to personalize these packets to your child's needs. Be on the lookout for these packets as we approach the last few weeks of school. Mrs. Cerny Spring has finally arrived. The weather has finally been nice for children to go outside and play. I know a lot of my students tell me how much fun they have at the park. In Math we have been very busy learning about measurement, fractions, and shapes. Some of their favorite math activities were measuring items with cotton balls and measuring body parts with a partner using a ruler. In reading we are on Unit 5. Keep practicing the weekly take home reading list with your child. They are doing a great job reading and are even trying to decode big vocabulary words. I am always amazed at how much the students have learned from the beginning of first grade. In science we are learning about life cycles and will soon be getting butterfly chrysalises to observe in the classroom. That will be very exciting, especially when we let them fly away. Keep working with your child over the summer. It’s been a great year! Mrs. Wedster Dear Parents of Room 107, What a wonderful year it has been. It has been an honor and a privilege to share such an important year with your child and you. I want to thank you for your support, kindness, and generosity throughout the year. Your children have worked so hard and learned so very much! They amaze me and teach me so much as well. I hope you continue to read together, study all word and spelling lists, and provide your children with the terrific experiences they seem to have had with their families. As we close out our school year, we will finish our current reading book, we will study patterns and advanced addition and subtraction in math, we will explore animal and insect life cycles in science, and continue to learn to write sentences and stories in English. We look forward to our field day in May. We will continue to learn and have some fun doing it. This class is so energetic, bright, eager to learn and caring! I am very lucky to have been their “FIRST” grade teacher. Have a fun-filled summer, and we look forward to seeing all of your children and you in the fall! Remember, school ends on May 26th,, and I will always cherish the awesome and happy memories of this school year. Fondly, Mrs. Burt Hello! Room 104 Families, It’s unbelievable that the end of another school year is almost here! The students and I have really enjoyed all the new things that we have learned in 2nd grade, especially our time spent exploring Science, Computing Math problems and Buddy Reading, and we are ready to charge ahead to 3rd grade soon!! As summer approaches, take time to enjoy your family and friends and soak up the Sun! Try to spend a little bit of time each day Reading to yourself or someone else and practicing your Math facts. Especially on those long car rides! Enjoy! Mrs. Kalousek Mrs. Novak’s Room 105 All year, the students in class have been saying that time is going so quickly. Yes, learning can be fun! Some of our favorite moments of this year involved science. Using the Next Generation Science Standards, we discovered, investigated, experimented, and engineered. Every week brought new excitement. Another part of the week that the students looked forward to was guided reading. They enjoyed reading in small groups and working in centers that allowed them to read to each other, listen to stories on cds, and write postcards to teachers. One incredible thing about this class is that they love to be challenged. If I told them that a lesson would be difficult, but I knew they could handle it, they would cheer. Besides daily math lessons, they challenged themselves to complete goals with Xtramath.org, Study Island, and timed quizzes. This class has shown that they have what it takes to be successful. Keep up the great work. Have an amazing summer. Spend some time reading, practicing math, investigating science, and having fun with your families. Mrs. Schmidt 3rd Grade Room 110 We are almost to the end of the 2015-2016 School Year already. It’s been an exciting, engaging, and awesome year in my classroom. I am proud of all the learning that has been acquired by my students. Thank you to all the parents for your efforts to help your child be successful in school. Continue to encourage reading, practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts with your child throughout the summer. Enjoy all the places our city has to explore and supplement school learning. (museums, zoos, exhibits, parks, etc.) I will be retiring from teaching in Burbank School District at the end of this school year. I have taught in the District for 17 wonderful years. I will treasure the memories that I will take with me. Have an awesome summer vacation. The end of the school year is quickly approaching, but the third graders in Room 111 are still working hard! I am so proud of the progress all the third graders have made on memorizing their multiplication facts. We will continue our 3 minute timed tests every Tuesday and Thursday until the end of the year. It is also important for students to continue practicing multiplication facts over the summer. Try encouraging your child to play a game on a multiplication website or app. We recently completed our PARCC testing sessions. Overall, the students worked very hard and took their time to complete these tests. We will begin taking the “End of the Year” MAP tests. This test gives each student a chance to demonstrate all the skills they have learned this year. Each student has set goals and created plans on how they will work towards achieving those goals. In Science we will be wrapping up our unit on weather, then moving onto simple machines. The students are looking forward to our field trip to the Museum of Science and Industry where we will take part in a lab class focused on work and simple machines. This year flew by so fast. Remember to have your child keep reading over the summer. My challenge for the third graders is to turn off technology (computers, video games, iPod, cell phones, etc.) for at least 30 minutes each day to enjoy a good book. Prairie Trails Library has a huge selection of exciting books and they have a wonderful summer reading program. Enjoy Summer! Mrs. Augustyn It’s hard to believe that this school year is coming to an end! We have had a very productive year in 4th grade. Students have learned new strategies and skills as well as accomplished many goals. I am confident that they are well prepared for 5th grade. I hope everyone has a wonderful summer and remember reading for enjoyment should be continued throughout the break. Mrs. Weigus Wow! The end of the year is just around the corner. Our exciting trip to the Adler Planetarium is scheduled for May 11th. Thank you to all of the parents who volunteered to chaperone. Next we have a special field trip that comes to the fourth grade classrooms. It is called Ag in the Classroom. Finally we have our last round of MAP testing scheduled for May. I am very proud of the fourth graders. They really did a great job on the PARCC test. Each student took their time and really worked hard. Fourth grade was so exciting. Hopefully the fourth graders have a lot of good memories. Who can forget our exploding volcanoes, revolving planets, our Civil War Unit and the other exciting things that we did throughout the year. We really had a great year! I hope everyone has a great and safe summer. Don’t forget to go to Prairie Trails Library and read some exciting novels this summer. I hope to see everyone back in school in August. Mrs. Barker 5th Grade Newsletter The 5th grade will finish out the year in Social Studies learning about the birth of our country, starting with the 13 colonies. In Math, we just started our Geometry unit, which is a great way to start transitioning into 6th grade. Learning about the characteristics of our environment and the challenges we face have been our focus across our Reading and Science classes. Students are encouraged to continue reading by making a weekly trip to the library during the summer. Also, students will be sent home with a small Math packet at the end of the school year. Each student should do their best to complete this over the summer in order to sharpen their skills. Have a safe and happy summer! Mrs. Zebio (Ms. Schmidt’s long-term substitute) Mrs. Paulikaitis—6th Grade McCord rocks! I have only been here one year, and it already feels like home. This has been a most memorable and amazing year. Thank you sixth graders for making me feel passionate and enthusiastic about coming to work every day. We had a lot of great times together, and I owe it all to you. You allowed me to be creative and inventive by putting your heart and soul into every performance and project we did. Your dedication and active participation made it happen. I am so proud of you and your commitment to learning. I am also proud of your character. I will always remember how thoughtful, caring and respectful you are. I will truly miss each and every one of you, but I wish you all the success and happiness on your next journey in life. May you and your families have a safe and fun summer. Well, it’s almost the end of the year. They always say time goes quickly when you’re having fun, and it has been a great year! As you know, your children finished taking the PARCC tests. They worked very hard and tried to do their best. I am so proud of them and sure you are too! It won’t be long until they will again be assessed on NWEA Map tests. Again, they will need to get their rest and make sure to eat a healthy breakfast on the days of testing. These dates will be given to your children. This last month will zoom by. There are still many topics to complete. Many that I am looking forward to teaching your children. There are exciting activities for your children to enjoy yet such as the 6th grade picnic, and Field Day. I want to wish all the sixth graders good luck at Liberty! I want to thank all the parents for being so supportive this year. All the sixth graders are such wonderful kids and they will surely be missed by all the McCord Staff. Have a fabulous summer! Mrs. Morf Social-emotional lessons in Kindergarten, 1st,2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 6th grade classrooms are winding down for the school year and we learned so much! Kindergarteners learned various social skills and friendship behaviors, while 1st graders learned to recognize emotions in themselves and others. 2nd graders learned about self-identity and getting along with others, and 3rd graders learned about the importance of showing respect to others and how to recognize and deal with disrespect. 4th graders focused on friendship qualities, what bullying is, and how to resolve bullying issues. 6th graders learned about empathy, resolving conflicts by using empathy skills, and how to cope with stress and strong emotions. All grades participated in lessons about personal safety. Thanks to all McCord students for their great effort! Annie Cummins Social Worker The school year is coming to an end. Our children may not participate in lessons during the summer, but the learning doesn’t have to stop. As parents, please expose your child to many educational opportunities that summer brings like trips, visits to the zoo, museums and forest preserves. Also, our library offers many activities for the kids. Most of all, don’t forget to read with your child every day. Many, especially young readers, forget their literacy skills if they don’t use them. Have a happy and safe summer! Ms. Donna, Ms. Leon and Ms. Affaneh Wow! The school year sure did go by quickly. What a great year. I enjoyed working with all the students this year. While summer is a time to rest and relax, we need to remember to make time to read, even if reading is not on the top of the list for fun things to do in summer. Studies show that when kids don’t read over the summer, they lose core reading skills and fall behind when they go back to school. Summer is the time to show students the joy in reading, when there are no questions to answer, except the ones we ask ourselves when we read, or tests to take about what we have read. Read for pleasure, read for fun. To help with this endeavor I have provided you with some links to summer book lists. You and your student(s) will have no problem finding a book or five to read this summer! Happy Reading! Miss Bylinski Reading Specialist http://www.scholastic.com/teachers/sites/default/files/asset/file/2016-summer-reading-challengebook-list-all-ages.pdf http://imaginationsoup.net/2015/05/03/summer-reading-list-for-kids/ http://www.education.com/seasonal/summer-reading/ http://www.readingrockets.org/books/summer I am so proud of McCord students. Every grade level has been researching and using text features in informational text, and they have been working so hard. I know they will continue this motivation into our last month of school. Kindergarten and first grade students will continue reading about animals and adding facts to their portfolios. Second graders will complete their biography research. Grades 3-6 will be focusing on poetry and will have the opportunity to create several types of poems. I am very excited to see their creativity. I will be out on a maternity leave and Mr. Gianoli will be leading Literacy classes for the remaining weeks. Mr. Gianoli is an excellent substitute and has covered many long term assignments in our district. We are happy to have him join our McCord family. Please continue to encourage your child/ren to continue reading every day throughout the summer. Students who read over the summer will have a more successful beginning in the fall. Many stories can be accessed online and there are lots of reading games available on websites like abcya.com, starfall.com, turtlediary.com. Don’t forget to visit the Prairie Trails library; they will have several summer activities planned. Students in every grade have had keyboarding instruction this year. Please promote typing practice over the summer months also. There are lots of typing lessons and games available online. Students are familiar with typing activities on abcya.com and typingclub.com. You may also access my website anytime from the district home page, bsd111.org. Click on Schools, McCord, Teacher Websites, Arvetis. Here you will find lots of reading and keyboarding websites. Have a safe and happy summer! Mrs. Arvetis Mrs. Swanson’s Music Notes The year is quickly coming to an end. Kindergarten students are continuing to learn about environmental sounds and playing simple rhythms on classroom instruments. Primary students in grades one, two and three are busy putting the finishing touches on our spring program “Burbank on Broadway” which will be presented at McCord School on Friday, May 20th at 1:30 pm. The students are very excited to perform for their families and friends and we can’t wait to see you at the show! The 4th Graders are finishing their unit on music from different cultures. 5th graders are finishing their unit on the history of European music and composers and 6th graders are finishing their unit on pop music history. I wish all of you a wonderful summer and hope that you will take advantage of the many free and low cost musical events going on in our area. Parades, outdoor concerts and local festivals are just some of the many opportunities available for you to hear some great music! PE-NEWS, Ms Swan McCord School is linking core curriculum subjects such as Language Arts and Math with physical education. For example, in a lesson utilizing the movement of a parachute, the students heard a story about an ocean adventure. As the lesson progressed, the students had to make predictions about the story and describe the meanings of words as they pertained to the movements of the parachute, such as the vocabulary words “ripple” and “ocean waves.” The students were also instructed on how to form a mountain and a cave with the parachute, part of the story’s plot, by following specific instructions. Not only did the lesson enforce the use the students’ imaginations, it also fostered skills including cooperation, teamwork, coordination and following instructions. From the Desk of Mrs. Hollandsworth, Speech/Language Pathologist MAY IS NATIONAL BETTER HEARING AND SPEECH MONTH. How fortunate we all are to be able to communicate every day. We listen to the birds singing and hear the warning sirens of local fire trucks coming to the rescue in our neighborhoods. We can say “I love you”. We can hear “I love you” too! As summer soon becomes a pleasant reality, let’s keep the following thoughts in mind that will certainly make us better communicators: Turn down the music. Did you know permanent hearing loss is on the rise in young people? Learn a new song from an old musical. Vocabulary increases as we learn songs. Read some books with your children. Another way to learn new words. Turn off the electronics and talk, talk, talk. No Ipads or cell phones at the dinner table please. McCord students and families are wonderful. It’s been my pleasure to serve you this school year. I hope to see you again in August. Have a safe summer. Learning Resource – Mrs. Kolb This is the time of year when everything starts to bloom and that is certainly true of the students in Learning Resource who have worked so hard all year long and have demonstrated such outstanding progress in all of their individual goals! Please continue to practice those math facts and curl up with a few good books over the summer! There are also many real life opportunities to practice math and reading skills such as money math while shopping, using measurement and fractions when preparing a recipe and there are just oodles of things to read everywhere! I wish each of you a wonderful and safe summer filled with sun, fun and lots of learning moments! From the Health Department Patrice Williams RN, BSN District Nurse Tips for Staying Safe & Healthy This Summer: • Protect your skin. Always wear sunscreen when out in the sun! • Drink plenty of water (stay away from sugary drinks and caffeine) to prevent dehydration. • When biking: “use your head, wear a helmet.” It is the single most effective safety device available to reduce head injury and death from bicycle crashes. • Always wear your seatbelt when in the car: buckle up every age, every seat, every trip! • Eat a balanced meal – perfect time of year to try new fruits and vegetables. • Stay active – remember to get at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily! • Stay safe when swimming. The American Red Cross recommends swimming in areas that are supervised by lifeguards. Never swim alone — always swim with a buddy. Please have your student’s required physicals, immunizations, and all other paper work submitted before the end of the 2015-2016 school year (May 26, 2016). Your child may not be assigned a classroom for the 2016-2017 school year until all required forms are returned.
