Dear Friend,
We have all just experienced an exciting and historic presidential race of which the
overarching theme was hope and change – a theme that we can embrace at WXXI. This
year we worked to be an independent voice for our community, striving to provide balanced
coverage of the issues and candidates locally and nationally – and proving the value of
public broadcasting. While securing our role as a public media resource, we also keep our
eyes on the future, as 2009 will certainly bring about exciting, sometimes challenging,
change and opportunity.
This past election season, WXXI presented more engaging and in-depth coverage than ever before. We aired all
the presidential and vice-presidential debates, hosted many local forums, and offered Free Air Time to local candidates.
We’re proud that our coverage was clear of the hyperbole and polarization apparent in so much of the media. You
didn’t have to suffer through negative political ads on WXXI this election season, but you did see and hear thoughtful,
intelligent exploration of the issues. I suspect users of WXXI entered their polling places on November 4 more aware of
the issues and better prepared to make informed decisions than any other group in this community.
We also helped usher in new hope in education as we used our airwaves and services to shed light on the
changes we can expect for our children in the future. In April, we dedicated more than 15 hours of news coverage to
introduce the new Rochester City School District Superintendent, Jean-Claude Brizard, to our community. Then, this
past November, we welcomed Governor David Paterson to Rochester and presented a live summit on educational
engagement and dropout prevention from Nazareth College. We utilized our new statewide interconnect to include
every public television station in the state in the broadcast of the summit.
Also, in trying to initiate hope and change, we launched an ongoing community dialogue about violence in
Rochester. Need to Know: Response to Murder, an hour-long special, told the story of the murder of a young black
male in the City of Rochester, and how the community responded. We also covered this story on WXXI radio and on
WXXI.org. Rochester City Police Chief David Moore, a guest on the program, commended WXXI for dedicating the time
to tell the human side of what normally is a one-day headline – and forgotten after that.
With your support, WXXI helped students across New York State with their studies through Homework Hotline. Our
GED Connection programs helped adult learners earn their high school diplomas. We filled our studios for WXXI Voices
lectures and for the tapings of our music series OnStage. We shared stories about the Power of Forgiveness, while at
the same time leading another Dialogue on Disabilities.
But in order to do all that, we had to embrace change. In 2008 we merged our radio, television and online news
services to create the WXXI Center for Public Affairs. We did so to strengthen our position as the trusted source for
coverage, debate and civil discussion on the issues that concern Rochesterians.
We recently changed our Web site, as well. WXXI.org now provides not only a more expansive way to navigate
the site and more information at your fingertips, but ways to interact with us – as well as the entire community. The
site is a continuing evolution and you can look forward to new features and more interactivity in the coming year.
Perhaps the biggest change we are preparing for is the transition from analog television to digital television on
February 17, 2009. With the digital signal comes more WXXI programming with better quality and better sound. We have
worked to provide information throughout the year on how the digital transition may affect you. If you’re still not sure
whether you’re prepared, I encourage you to visit our DTV site at WXXI.org/dtv or call our DTV hotline at (585) 258-0200.
This year, with the uncertain economy and the pressure on government funding and corporate support, we need
you as a partner more than ever. As you plan your year-end giving, please keep in mind the news, the music and
cultural programming, the children’s shows and the documentaries that make a difference in your life. I hope you agree
that your investment in WXXI pays dividends every day.
On behalf of all of us at WXXI, please accept my very best wishes for a happy, healthy holiday season – and a
wonderful New Year!
Best regards,
Norm Silverstein, WXXI President & CEO

COVER STORY
IF YOU GREW UP IN ROCHESTER
between the late 1950s and the early 1980s then you remember how
vibrant Midtown Plaza was. You remember when the holiday season
meant a trip downtown to see the festive window displays, when
McCurdy’s was the place to shop, and when Wegmans filled the corner
store and everyone met at the Clock of the Nations.
Chet Walker remembers working at Midtown Plaza, and how the
Clock of the Nations always let him know if he was on time or late for
work. Ken McCurdy remembers being able to miss school to attend the
opening of Midtown Plaza. The Maggios remember meeting for the first
time at Midtown, and fittingly had their wedding reception at Top of the
Plaza. These individuals and many others share their memories in WXXI’s
latest documentary Memories of Midtown, premiering Monday,
December 1 at 8 p.m. on WXXI-TV and WXXI-HD. Mr. Walker and Mr.
Maggio are just a few special guests that will be in studio to answer the
phones during our membership campaign, and share more stories.
In the late 1950s, the retail marketplace was changing. As people
moved to the suburbs, businesses followed, which had a huge impact on
downtown. It took the vision of two Rochester business leaders to rise
to the occasion and reinvigorate downtown, and Rochester itself. Gilbert
J.C. McCurdy and Maurice Forman joined together to build the first
urban, in-door mall in America that would change retail and downtown.
Midtown Plaza opened on April 10, 1962, and for the two decades that
followed it kept the heart of downtown beating. But the times changed,
and Midtown began to struggle in the 1980s when it couldn’t compete
with the suburban shopping malls.

Do you know where the
Clock of the Nations went?
A hallmark of Midtown Plaza,
the Clock of the Nations has
temporarily been moved to the
Greater Rochester International
Airport. Its permanent home will be
at Golisano Children’s Hospital once
the hospital’s expansion is complete.
continued from page 5 >>
On October 16, 2007 the City of Rochester announced that Midtown Plaza
would be torn down to make room for the new PAETEC headquarters. Today, a
new generation of business leaders is working to reinvent downtown, giving it a
new heartbeat of activity.
Before looking ahead, WXXI asks that you take a look back. Tune in for
this special presentation and recall your memories of Midtown Plaza. Narrated
by 13 WHAM-TV’s Don Alhart, Memories of Midtown features never-before-seen
footage, both archival and personal, along with anecdotal interviews with noted
personalities.
During the broadcast you’ll have the chance to purchase your own copy of
Memories of Midtown. It also makes a perfect holiday gift.
Memories of Midtown repeats on December 1 at 9:30 p.m., December 5
at 10 p.m. and December 6 at 2 p.m. on WXXI-TV and WXXI-HD. To learn more

For more than 30 years Hart Hearing Centers has provided audiological
services, including diagnostic testing and hearing instrumentation (hearing
aids) assessment and fitting. With five offices around the Greater Rochester
area, it’s easy for patients to access their services.
Dr. Stephen Hart explained, “Our staff is composed of five audiologists,
including myself. Four audiologists have a Doctoral degree and one staff
member is currently pursuing this degree. We want our staff to be as knowledgeable as possible in order to keep up in this ever-changing field. We are
also well respected in the medical community and receive numerous referrals
from area physicians.” Dr. Hart offered that it was an easy decision to partner
with WXXI: “We know the WXXI audience is smart and loyal. They seek out
and demand the best and we are here to offer it to them. As a hometown
company, Hart Hearing Centers wants to support the programming on WXXI.
We feel the listeners, who in many cases are supporting WXXI on a personal
level, will respect this level of commitment to keep such wonderful programming and resources in the Rochester area. We’re committed to Rochester and
we’re committed to our patients.”
When asked what advice he would offer to other businesses considering partnering with WXXI, Dr. Hart replied, “This is a worthy investment! The
patrons of WXXI appreciate the investment you offer to the area.”
When Dr. Hart is on the road, he enjoys listening to Morning Edition and
Science Fridays on AM 1370.
