From 11 AM to 2 PM Thanksgiving Dinner will be served in Shepherds Hall, courtesy of the generosity and hard work of many in the parish. All are welcome. If you are travelling for the holiday, Happy Thanksgiving to you and your loved ones, and please return to us safely. Many thanks to all who worked so hard on the Holy Name Foundation’s Dinner Dance at Gargiulo’s Restaurant on Friday, November 13th, and congratulations again to honorees Msgr. Joseph Nagle, Teena Caccamo, and Nick Sisto, Jr. It was a great social evening that provided important support for St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Academy and for Holy Name Parish. Many thanks also to our Boy Scouts who volunteered their time and labor on Saturday, November 14th to paint the iron railings and fence in front of the Rectory and in front of the Church, as well as the railings on the ramp on the Prospect Avenue side of the Church. The cold and wind of the day made the job take longer than expected, but the scouts persevered and the results look great. PRAYERS FOR PARIS ATTACKS VICTIMS Please keep the victims of last week’s terrorists’ attacks in Paris in your prayers as we conclude November, our month of special remembrance of the deceased. A Note from Fr. Larry As promised, below is the text of the appeal I made at each of last weekend’s Masses for increased weekly giving to Holy Name of Jesus parish. A typed translation of my appeal into Spanish was also distributed at the 9 AM Sunday Spanish Mass. Please feel free to approach me or any of the members of the Parish Finance Committee with questions you may have about this very important matter. The Finance Committee members are: Martin Cottingham, Michael Coyle, Ann Dolan, Thomas Galligan, Jr., Philip Lehpamer, Nick Sisto, and Diana Sullivan. Please think and pray about what’s presented below; and – if you can – please increase your weekly giving to the suggested levels right away. Thank you and God bless you for your generosity. TEXT OF FR. LARRY’S APPEAL Folks, today I’m going to be speaking with you about money, asking you to give more money to Holy Name of Jesus Parish each week. The need for increased weekly giving is especially great now. However, before we get further into that, I want to emphasize that, as important as the topic is and despite the parish’s needs, my desire to serve you – each of you – as a priest and pastor to the very best of my ability has nothing to do with what you give to the parish. With Deacon Felipe’s departure and Fr. Mark’s leave, I’m currently stretched a bit thin but I’m doing my best. If there is something you need or want from me as a priest or pastor, please do not hesitate to let me know. I also again want to acknowledge and thank you for all of the support – support that includes your money, your time, and your talents – that so many of you have given to this parish over the years. Those important things having been said, we proceed. I have four main financial obligations as pastor. The first – and the one most important for today - is to make sure that the parish “runs in the black”: that we take in enough current revenue to meet our current operating expenses. My second obligation is to make sure that the parish adequately supports the fourteen special second collections that are taken up during the year to help meet special diocesan and, via the Diocese, special national and international Catholic Church purposes like retired clergy and religious, Catholic Relief Services and the Missions. These are very worthy causes that depend heavily on those fourteen special second collections. My third obligation is to make sure that each year the parish meets its goal for the Brooklyn Diocese’s Annual Catholic Appeal. Holy Name parish has historically done so and is doing so this year. Next year’s Appeal will begin during Lent, and we’ll be hearing more about that then. My fourth obligation is to make sure that Holy Name of Jesus parish pays off the almost 1.4 million dollar loan still outstanding from our beautiful but expensive Church Restoration project. The Annual Catholic Appeal and the almost 1.4 million dollar Church restoration loan are topics we will be talking more about at another time. Today, our focus is on the first two items I mentioned: operating the parish “In the black” and adequately supporting the fourteen special second collections. Concerning operating the parish “in the black”, I can say that expenses have been reduced greatly in the past several months, but we still finished the 2014-2015 diocesan fiscal year (which runs from September 1st to August 31st) “in the red”. With the concurrence of the Parish Trustees and Finance Committee and as I reported in the bulletin, in August I had to withdraw over $100,000 from parish savings (accumulated many years ago) to pay outstanding bills. We closed the fiscal year on August 31st with all bills paid, but with a large deficit between income and expenditures. Things look better on the expenditures side for our current 2015-2016 Fiscal Year (thanks to all the spending reductions that continue to take effect); but we still anticipate a deficit, unless we can increase current revenues. This Fiscal Year I’ve already had to withdraw an additional $10,000 from savings to pay bills, and more withdrawals will almost certainly be necessary, unless we can increase revenues. Parish savings are our only parish emergency financial reserves, and our savings are declining all too rapidly. So much for the problem. In a moment we’ll talk about the solution. But before doing so, I need to speak about the Brothers House and the Convent. The parish took a large loan to help pay for the extensive renovations necessary before the Brothers House could be rented. The terms of that loan require that, until March of 2019, all rents from the Brothers House immediately go to pay off that loan. Concerning the Convent, I can tell you that the Diocese is working very hard to rent the Convent, but we cannot now predict when it will be rented. Our income versus expenditures problem must be addressed now. Brothers House rentals and possible Convent rentals may play some role many years down the road, but our increased income needs must be addressed now. Our very capable Parish Finance Committee members, with some excellent guidance from Deacon Mickey Cutter who has been assisting our parish with our fiscal problems for the last several months, has developed a plan that includes many steps to help solve our income versus expenditures problem. The various social events organized by our extremely hardworking Parish Fundraising Committee play an important role in that plan. Please continue to support them. However, Fundraising events alone will not “close the gap”. My assignment in the plan is to ask you to increase your weekly giving at our Saturday evening and Sunday morning Masses. That giving has two components. The first component is what you give to the Parish in the first collection and in those second collections we have for the upkeep of our parish buildings (what many people refer to as our Renovation and Repair collections). The second component is what you give in the 14 special collections throughout the year for Diocesan or (via the Diocese) for national or international Catholic causes. During Fiscal Year 2014-2015 our regular weekend (Saturday Vigil and Sunday Morning) collections for the Parish averaged $5243 per week. That $5243 figure includes offerings via weekly envelopes, Faith Direct on-line giving, and cash put in the collection baskets but not in envelopes. It includes everything given in first collections and in “Renovation and Repair” second collections. I’m asking you to increase weekly giving to the parish so that the total averages S6200 per week. I’m also asking that, in the 14 special second collections for Diocesan, national and international causes, you give at least as much as you gave last year. If you do that, you’ll be doing a lot to help me meet my two obligations of running this parish “in the black” and adequately supporting diocesan and diocesan-mandated national and international causes. To put all of this in more concrete terms, I’m asking that each family or each individual adult contributor that can afford to do so give a total of at least $25 per week, with $20 per week given in the first collection and $5 given in the second collection. That $5 would be either for a Diocesan special second collection or for a parish Renovation and Repair second collections on those weeks when there is no Diocesan second collection. If you cannot afford $25, give $20 ($15 in the first collection, $5 in the second collection). If you can’t afford $20, give $15 ($10 in the first collection, $5 in the second collection). These are suggested and requested giving levels. An important point is that we’re asking each family or each individual adult contributor is to give what you can; but to make a decision in advance of Mass each week about what you will give in each collection. Please do not let the amount you give be determined by what loose bills you happen to have in your pocket or purse at the time of the collection. I’ve gone on for a long time and I haven’t mentioned God. Well, God knows that many wonderfully generous people in our fine parish already give at these levels or higher. God knows that there are families and individuals in the parish who cannot give more. But God also knows that there are families or individuals that can give more. It would be great if those who can afford to give more put God and the “things of God” higher on their priorities and did give more to Holy Name of Jesus parish. Scripture and life experience tell us that us that those who give will be blessed in many ways. Holy Name of Jesus is a great parish with great parishioners who have been very good to me. Right now our parish needs all of our help to address a serious but solvable financial problem. You will all know how we’re doing because we will continue to put our collection totals in the bulletin each week, clearly delineating what was given to the parish (hopefully averaging $6200 each week) and what was given to the Diocese in special second collections. I will also be advising you of each withdrawal I have to make from savings to pay current bills. Hopefully I will not have to make many withdrawals. Please think and pray about what’s been said here; and – if you can – please increase your weekly giving to the suggested levels right away. We’re in this together (I’m a parishioner and a donor as well as pastor) and we have God on our side. With your and His help, all should be fine. Thank you and God bless you for your generosity. 11/26 Thanksgiving Dinner, Shepherds Hall 11/30 Healing Mass, Church 12/6 School Vendor Sale, Shepherds Hall 12/12 Our Lady of Guadalupe Celebration, Church And Shepherds Hall 12/13 Breakfast with Santa, Shepherds Hall 12/20 Children’s Theatre Group Christmas Show, Shepherds Hall 12/20 Deadline for Giving Tree Gifts 12/31 New Year’s Eve Party for Families in School Basement 12/31 New Year’s Eve Party in Shepherds Hall Adults Only MORE INFORMATION WILL FOLLOW IN UPCOMING BULLETINS. THE SOLEMNITY OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST THE KING November 22, 2015 This Sunday is the Feast of Christ the King. As Americans, we might have a hard time with this title since we started our nation rejecting a monarchy and establishing a republic, with a balance of powers. But, in the Scriptures, the King is featured as the one who is not only powerful, but also just, strong, trustworthy and kind to all. His power is used to enrich and protect His people. All the readings today reflect this relationship. We continue this Sunday with the apocalyptic writings. In the First Reading, Daniel has a vision of a “Son of Man” who is presented to the Ancient One and whose kingship shall not be destroyed. The Hebrew Scriptures often refer to the “Son of Man” as a supernatural figure. This title also appears 82 times in the Gospels and seems to be the favorite selfdesignation of Jesus. First, it contrasts the weakness and poverty of human beings to the might and power of God. Secondly, it emphasizes Jesus’ identification with our ordinary human nature. The Responsorial Psalm continues this theme of a trustworthy King who invites his people to be holy. In the Second Reading from Hebrews, we see similar imagery where Jesus “has made us into a kingdom”. Jesus here is faithful, loving, liberating, welcoming and forgiving, and is finally called the “Alpha and the Omega”, the beginning and the end. The King here cares for his people and invites us to do the same. We are called to be life-giving, drawing strength from this wonderful God who is with us always, from beginning to end. The Gospel from John presents the scene of Jesus being questioned by Pilate who asks if Jesus is a King. Jesus responds, “My kingdom does not belong to this world…For this I was born and for this I came into the world: to testify to the truth.” Earlier in the Gospel of John, Jesus said, “If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”(John 8:31-32) In this preelection year in the U.S., many politicians are the masters of deception, creating lies about their rivals’ positions and then telling them over and over until people are convinced there must be some truth to the statements. Integrity often takes a back seat to winning. It is easy to decry the lies of other people but far harder to recognize the times that we are sometimes imposters. By the grace of God, we can put aside a life of deceit and have the courage to live as God wills in integrity and truth. The liturgical year of the Church concludes by summarizing Jesus’ life on earth in one simple statement: “Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.” May we have the courage to listen to the voice of Jesus and bring about His Kingdom here each day. FOOD PANTRY The food pantry has been averaging 40 individuals/families during 2015. We will distribute food 2-3 pm on Dec. 5 & 19 and Jan. 9. At this time, pasta, pasta sauce, and cereal are needed.
