SUMMER IS AMOST HERE!
Fran Pistone, Principal
Kids experience learning losses when they do
not engage in educational activities during the
summer. It’s called the “summer slide.” So,
what’s the solution? Make summer reading and
math practice a fun and engaging experience!
Many parents and students purchased books at
our book fairs this year but don’t forget that
public libraries are a golden arena to keep
refining reading skills. There are numerous
summer programs at all locations and they are
free. Library visits will also give your children the opportunity to take
home books covering all interests and reading levels. There are also a
plethora of math skill books, flash cards, etc., available at local stores.
Cooking (measurement) and grocery shopping (budgeting) are also
practical and ideal ways to increase and cement math skills acquired
during the school year.

Establishing a summer routine usually helps. Instead of cartoons, 20
minutes of morning reading is a great way to start the day. Setting aside
some reading time before bed each evening is also a good habit to
encourage. You can certainly do the same for math facts to keep those skills
alive and sharp. Playing math games in the car on the way to the beach or
to visit relatives (i.e. adding mileage, counting blue trucks, etc.) can also
turn that boring car ride into an educational event.

This is the key to turning a ‘summer slide’ into a ‘summer climb.’ According
to research, kids who read four or more books over the summer fare better
on reading-comprehension tests in the fall than their peers who read one or
no books over the summer. Obviously the same holds true for math. These
are important skills you and your children have worked hard to master. So
don’t forget to keep up reading and math momentum this summer.

After leading the Hurley girls on
a chase along the coast of California, the shark and the octopus
returned to our neighborhood to
taunt us. The Hurley girls almost
caught them on Poinsettia Lane,
but they got away.
Enough reading power was added to the Hurley girls
“bug” so that they can keep up the chase. We will still
need a lot more reading power to capture the shark and
the octopus and get Hurley’s boards back. We need to
catch them before the end of the year so we can have
our “free fun day,” - keep up the reading power!

Our officers and representatives have continued the dedication and commitment set by their fall predecessors.
With the assistance of Student Council advisors Ms. Lisa Lancon and Mrs. Nicole McClymonds, they have
worked exceptionally hard to maintain volunteerism for the Carrillo favorites of juice bar sales and flag salutes
every Friday as well as signatures sales the third Thursday of every month; maintain fundraising efforts for
children’s charitable organizations and our own Carrillo Elementary by selling Smencils in record time; and
maintain school community building with the planning and coordinating of spring semester spirit days: Twins
Day and Olympic Day. Additionally, both semesters of student council have largely contributed to organizing
Top-10 Favorites for our 2009-2010 Carrillo Yearbook.
Officers and representatives from both fall and spring semesters have done an outstanding job of representing
Carrillo Elementary School this year by going above and beyond all of the following student council requirements:
 Complete all class work on time and receive proficient grades.
 Come to all meetings on time.
 Report back to your classroom or buddy room after each meeting.
 Gather ideas from classmates and share them at meetings.
 Have excellent school behavior.
 Be a role model.
Congratulations to all of Student Council officers and representatives. Thank you for helping to make Carrillo
Elementary School a wonderful place to grow and learn!

STAR Testing
May 10 — May 21
As you probably know our state mandated spring testing is just around the corner. Our
testing window will be from Monday, May 10th to Friday, May 21st. All students in grades 2
through 5 will be taking a series of standardized tests. Some grade levels will have more
tests to accomplish than others but we will be able to complete all testing by the 21st.
Although the tests are not timed, we are asking for your help in getting children to school on time each day.
Testing begins immediately in the morning and tardy students cannot be admitted to classrooms once the
testing begins. Please make sure your child has a healthy, nutritious breakfast (research proven to improve
performance). Obviously a good night’s sleep is also imperative.
As always we appreciate the support we receive from our parents especially during our spring testing so,
thank you in advance. Thank you also to all the people who have volunteered as proctors. We still need to
fill about 10 spots so if you can proctor for even one day, please don’t forget to stop in at the office and let
us know.
Hats 4 Haiti
Allison Wood, Carrillo 4th Grader
On January 12, 2010 a massive earthquake hit Haiti. The 7.0 quake caused major devastation to the people of
Haiti. It is one of the poorest nations in the world. The Haitians hardly had food, clean water, clothes or schools
to go to. Now their situation is even worse. Over 220,000 people have died, 300,000 were injured, and about
300,000 homes were destroyed. This is why my sister, EmmaKate, and I came up with the idea of Hats 4 Haiti.
Our plan was for students and faculty to wear a hat to school for a day and donate $1 for the earthquake victims
of Haiti. We wore all different kinds of hats (silly hats, baseball caps, beanies, and any hat you could imagine). Hats 4 Haiti was launched the week of February 8th through Carrillo Kids Care.
Our fundraiser was a huge success because of your support! We raised over $800.00 for the people in Haiti through
donations and recycling. Your donations were sent directly to The American Red Cross and Partners in Health.
Thank you for helping the people in Haiti.

How Does Your Garden Grow?
Kristin Whelan, 1st Grade Teacher
Spring is here and with it comes plenty of sunshine, longer days, warmer weather, and beautiful
blooming flowers. It is the perfect time to get your garden in order, and if you don’t have one yet,
the perfect time to start one.
One of the first things you need to do when starting a new garden is pick a good spot. Find a place
outside that gets plenty of good sunlight, not too much water, and isn’t in a high traffic area. You
will need about two inches of good soil or compost. If you are planting from seed, read and follow
the directions on the packet.
Some of my personal favorite (and most successful) seed plantings are alyssum, lavender, and
nasturtium. Don’t give up if you don’t get a good crop, as sometimes it takes a few years for many
of these plants to become well-established.
Do you like butterflies? I have been extremely fortunate to have Anise Swallowtails in my garden for the past two
summers. Last year I tried planting fennel too, since I did not have enough anise for all of my hungry caterpillars,
and it worked out beautifully. The caterpillars didn’t seem to notice a difference (it isn’t very obvious to me either)
and happily plowed through whatever had grown. This year the fennel and the anise are looking great from all the
rain we have had so I am very excited to see what kind of butterfly crop we get this summer.
Happy Gardening!
Carrillo School Site Council
The School Site Council (SSC) is alive and thriving at Carrillo. As you know this vital organization meets monthly
throughout the year to discuss programs, make recommendations for improvements, approve budgets and the
School Safety Plan, and analyze the End of Year Survey completed by all parents and students. Thank you for
taking the time to complete the parent and student anonymous surveys.
We are in the process of electing new members for the 2010-2011 school year, so hopefully you had a chance to obtain your ballot on our website and make your choices. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank all council
members who have served this year and especially those leaving us: Melissa Armentrout, Robin Henigman, Kelly
Keatly, and Martha Rotramel. Continuing members are: Jennifer Curran, Sjana Wick, Darcy Smith, Nancy
Danielson, Viki Stewart, and Fran Pistone.
New SCC Members
We want to take this opportunity to thank all the parents who generously volunteered their time to run for a
School Site Council position for the next two years.
We are pleased to announce that the votes have been tallied and our three new SSC members are:
Kirstin Farella, Cheryl Hanson, and Dena Malasek.
Congratulations to all!! We look forward to having these three parents as our newest members.

From the PTO President
Dear Carrillo Families,
What a wonderful year we have had! We have so much to be proud of. As a PTO we had three
goals in mind: to bring families together and create a sense of community, to offer informative
programs to our parents, and to raise much needed funds to continue educational and
enriching initiatives that benefit all of our children. I feel that we were successful in all of
these endeavors.
You attended our family events and school activities in greater numbers than we have seen in
a while. Please continue! Your presence and participation help to make this a truly special
community. We have developed additional lines of communication with our website and
weekly e-mails blasts.
Thanks to all of you, our fundraising efforts were successful throughout the year. We are right
on track with our fundraising goal for the year. This will allow us to continue to support our
programs for next year.
At this time, I would like to thank many people that have made this year possible. To our
parent volunteers, words cannot express the gratitude and appreciation I wish to share to you
ALL!! Thank you for your commitment and long hours that you have given to help Carrillo
Elementary School and the PTO for volunteering at family events, in classrooms, and
fundraisers. Thank you for your gift to give back. To our amazing teachers and administrators, thank you for all that you do to inspire our children. You continuously raise the bar and
we appreciate the exceptional gift you offer our community. To the Carrillo Community, it
has been a true pleasure to serve as President of this PTO. Carrillo is a special place where
wonderful things happen every day.
As the year ends, I wish a fond farewell to our families moving on to middle school. We wish
you much luck as your children enter this next stage and we will miss you.
Have a wonderful summer!
