The Summerall Guards - North Carolina Azalea Festival
Queen Azalea LX
VI
Queen Azalea Jennifer Wayne
As if it isn’t cool enough that this siren was born into Hollywood royalty—she’s the granddaughter of film icon
John Wayne—she was blessed with talent all her own. Yes, she was a nationally ranked tennis player before
pursuing a music career and no, she isn’t alone. She was discovered by Merv Griffin and moved to Nashville where
she joined a band. Her beautiful voice and background blends perfectly with the trio she completes with artists
Tayla Lynn (granddaughter of Loretta) and Caroline Cutbirth (a Daniel Boone descendent). Together, they make
up Stealing Angels—and this hot girl group is mixing up their distinct sound and put out an album that might
make Jennifer and her band mates almost as famous as their iconic ancestors. Jennifer wrote 9 of the 13 songs
on their debut album and has also had her songs recorded by American idol winner Taylor Hicks, and Grammy
Nominated artist, Eric Paslay. Aside from her music, she is currently on the Emmy Award winning TV show “The
Amazing Race.” She is racing with her band mate Caroline Cutbirth, and they are spreading a little “song” around
the world!

The
Summerall
Guards
Composed of 61 members of the First Class (Senior), the Summerall Guards represent the ultimate achievement in
the military phase of cadet life.
Selection for membership in the Guards is rigorous, and only those who demonstrate the highest military standards
are chosen.
The intricate maneuvers performed by the Guards, the Citadel Series, is completed without any verbal commands.
Many hours of practice are required to achieve the peak of perfection.
Each man works as a small part of a single unit, contributing to an overall image of exactness, precision, and
military spit and polish.
At TD Bank, we’re happy to support the things
that bring our community together.

Beautiful young girls wearing hoop-skirted Antebellum dresses first appeared as
greeters in the gardens during the Cape Fear Garden Club Azalea Garden Tour© in
1969. Mrs. Harley Vance, then president of the Cape Fear Garden Club, is credited
with introducing this idea. Seven young ladies, five of whom were daughters of club
members, donned dresses worn to a southern ball or made by Mrs. Augusta Counts.
When the girls sat in the gardens that year, the concept of the Cape Fear Garden
Club, Inc. Azalea Belles© was born.
The Belles have grown from that original seven to one hundred thirty-four in 2013.
Most of the dresses worn today are supplied by three approved dressmakers, Alma
Fennell, Kay Counts Godwin, and Debbie Scheu. The Azalea Belles have truly
become ambassadors for the city of Wilmington and have come to symbolize the
festival season as much as the flowers they represent. The Azalea Belles enhance the
beauty of many events during the festival, but their primary duty continues to be as
greeters to visitors in the gardens on the Cape Fear Garden Club Azalea Garden Tour©.
Azalea Belles must be sponsored by a member of the Cape Fear Garden Club. Priority is given to daughters and
granddaughters of club members, followed by high school seniors and juniors who live in New Hanover County.
The Azalea Belle Committee is chaired by Cape Fear Garden Club members: Cathy Poulos, Linda McCall, Donna
Pendergrast, and Karen Smith. Congratulations to the 2013 Azalea Belles listed below:
