Greetings from the Department
It is a pleasure to present to you this electronic
version of the 2012 Orthodontic Department
newsletter. Thanks to the efforts of our residents,
and especially Gillian Hay who is beginning her
senior year, we were able to put together this
collection of news, events, and achievements that
we thought would be interesting to you and help
keep you in touch with your orthodontic program.
You should know that the residents, staff, and
faculty continue to work hard to make and keep
the program the best it can be. We all enjoy doing
it and the success we have experienced is very

gratifying. Your support, by being a member of
the Orthodontic Foundation, coming to meetings,
calling or sending emails, and donating to the MCV Orthodontic Endowment
Fund, is very much appreciated. Please email me with any comments or
suggestions you might have, or just to say hello, at [email protected].

Congratulations 2012 Graduates!

Shoff
Sheldon A. Bates was born and raised in South Carolina. He attended Wofford College,
where he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and received a degree in Biology. He then
attended the Medical University of South Carolina for dental school where he served as
the student body president over the six health professional colleges that comprise the
university. Upon receiving his DMD degree, he matriculated to Virginia Commonwealth
University for his orthodontic residency. During residency, his research project was
entitled "Mandibular Symphyseal Distraction Osteogenesis (MSDO): Association with
Temporomandibular Dysfunction (TMD) Symptoms." Upon graduating from residency,
Sheldon has decided to stay in Virginia and will be entering into private practice.
Christine Marie Farah was born in White Plains, New York. After moving to Virginia as a
child, she went on to attend James Madison University where she received her Bachelor
of Science in Health Sciences. Christine then moved to Richmond where she received her
D.D.S. from Virginia Commonwealth University. After graduating from VCU's dental
school, summa cum laude, she continued her education here as an orthodontic resident.
Her master’s thesis, “The fluoride recharging capability of orthodontic materials: an invitro study,” examined the ability of certain sealants to remineralize white spot lesions.
Upon graduation in 2012, Christine will be moving to Lawrenceville, New Jersey and
joining an orthodontic practice in Newtown, Pennsylvania. During this exciting transition
from residency to private practice, Christine is also looking forward to her upcoming
wedding to Erik Stang in December 2012.
Dr. David Louis Jones was born in Martinsville, Virginia, where he graduated from Carlisle
School in 2001. As a Wahoo at the University of Virginia, he earned his Bachelor of Arts in
Psychology in 2005. He received his D.D.S. degree from the Virginia Commonwealth
University School of Dentistry in 2010 as an OKU Honor graduate. He continued his
education in Richmond, Virginia at the VCU Department of Orthodontics. Following a
successful Master’s defense titled: “Perceived social attributes of college students with
ideal versus non-ideal dental esthetics judged by peers,” he received a Certificate in
Orthodontics along with a Master of Science in Dentistry. David is excited to start his
orthodontic career in Richmond where he will enter private practice with Dr. Graham
Gardner. David is also looking forward to marrying his long-term Wahoo girlfriend,
Justine Lawson, in August 2012.
Michael Shoff is the second Shoff to graduate from VCU Orthodontics in recent history,
with his uncle Rob graduating in 1996. Mike graduated Summa Cum Laude from UCLA
School of Dentistry and was recognized with OKU honors. In his time at VCU, he started
151 new cases and did his Masters thesis on Class II correction with the Forsus Appliance.
He presented this research at the Charles Schultz research symposium at the 2012 AAO
meeting in Hawaii. Upon graduation, he will be buying a practice in Bellingham,
Washington.
