February 2013
Caller:Whit Brown
Welcome again to all our happy Whirl &
Twirl Square and Round Dancers.
We sailed right through January and into
February and once again we'll be starting a new round of Mainstream classes
beginning with our first Western Square
Dance Open House on the 5th of February. It seems we just graduated a class and here we are beginning
another one. It is a fact that we continue to lose more members
than we gain. So if we want to see our club grow we need to turn
this around and make an effort to bring in new members to the
club and it all starts with you. Imagine, if each member were to
bring in just one couple each we could fill our hall. That would
take determination and optimism, but it can be done. Just one
couple each.
Jack Frye is the new Newsletter Editor. If you have any items of
interest contact Jack.
Thanks, Jack for stepping up and taking over.
Bill and Lisa Rigsby have scheduled a Blue Bandit raid to Dixie
Squares on February 7. Check the Blue Bandit board for times
and maps.
Valentine dances are on Friday the 8th and Wednesday the 13th.
Red and White are the colors of the day and bring along your
favorite valentine.
Next month on Sunday the 17th is our annual TAW Appreciation
Dinner. A sign up sheet will be posted for all the men to bring a
special dish and Wayne Norwood will be smoking the finest pork
for all to enjoy. Dinner will be at 5 p.m.

Meet Virginia Barnes & Renzie Davidson
By Michael Craft & Donna Verdino
2012-2013 Board
Virginia and Renzie regularly dance together and this article covers both of their histories. They were introduced to each other at
Whirl & Twirl by Annabelle Tropf.
George & Shirley Knapp
Virginia was born in Mount Clemens, Michigan but her family
moved when she was only six months old to New Haven, just six
miles from Clemens and she grew up there. She attended elementary school in a two-room schoolhouse in Meade and junior high
and high school in New Haven, where she graduated.

She has a younger sister and had two older brothers, but one has passed away. Her parents were farmers
until Virginia’s father passed away when her mom was only 48. After that Virginia’s mother became a
nurses’ aid.
Virginia worked for a space industry company and that is where she met her husband. Eventually she
became a stay-at-home mom and she took that seriously! She says, with understandable pride, that she
made all of her children’s clothes until they graduated from high school! After they graduated she finally
had the time to take an outside job! She has three daughters and two sons now living around the country
– Orlando, Houston, Tennessee, and Las Vegas. One of her daughters, who lives in Orlando, is a line
dance instructor! Virginia has seven grandchildren – four grandsons and three granddaughters.
After Virginia lost her husband in 1992 she took dance lessons at three clubs. She became very active in
the Orlando Singles and she was the last president for the club before it was forced to close down. Virginia keeps busy not only with square dancing, but also line dancing, bowling, exercising, and walking
for health and pleasure.
Renzie and his sister were born in Washington, Pennsylvania and grew up in Hickory, just 12 miles
away. Renzie’s dad drove truck while his mom stayed home to take care of the family. Renzie went to
Fort Cherry High in McDonald, Pennsylvania and attended college at UCF. He served in the United
States Air Force and has three children, two sons and a daughter. Renzie’s oldest son and his daughter
both live and work in the Orlando area. His youngest son lives in Burbank, California, as a manager at
Disney’s headquarters!
Renzie came to Florida after Kroger closed its operations in Pennsylvania. He has been a fire fighter, a
paramedic, a fire marshal, and an instructor at Florida State Fire College! He was State Fire Marshal of
the year in 2000 and has published several articles in Fire related periodicals both in the United States
and internationally!
Renzie started square dancing in Greensburg, Pennsylvania in 1976 and has been dancing ever since! He
now has a handyman business and is a CPR instructor.
