ompaction equipment provides
the finishing touch to every road
construction project, be it major
motorway or a private access. It’s
hard to imagine what the country’s
infrastructure would be like without them.
Good compaction is the key ingredient for any
successful roading project and Sakai, one of
the world’s leading manufacturers of vibratory
compaction equipment, has shown it has the
products to suit New Zealand conditions.

Sakai rollers have been prominent in the area

Christchurch roads safe and to assist with the
restoration of industrial car parks and
driveways that have been severely damaged
by the earthquakes.
Sakai rollers range from 1.3 to 13 tonnes.
Certain models also boast oscillatory vibration
in tandem with standard vibration making them
ideal for thin lift and thick layer compaction.

Operability, functionality, safety and driver
comfort are key design areas that Sakai
prides itself on when attempting to reduce
the increasing concerns of operator fatigue,
particularly in the operation of compaction
equipment. From the driver’s point of view,
this equates to excellent vision from either
side of the seat, operator-friendly controls
and a standard ROPS frame complete the
safe operating procedures.
Another popular model seen on New
Zealand roads is the Sakai GW750-2. It is
a vibratory pneumatic tired roller, with a
base weight of 9240kg. Four variable
amplitude settings provide an equivalent
compaction effort of a 25,000kg static PTR,
achieving the required density and high
productivity for both large and small
projects, plus the ability to manoeuvre in
tight city streets and parking lots. With its
9240kg light weight, as compared to a
25,000kg PTR, savings in transport and fuel
costs are significant, benefiting the owner
considerably. Also with a reduction in CO2
gases, compared to a larger roller the carbon
footprint is minimised.
“Sakai products have always had a great
reputation and with the TW750-2 and the
GW750-2 in its stable of compaction
equipment, its high volume of sales is set to
continue,” says AB Equipment’s sales and
marketing manager — construction products,
Rob Fuller. “AB Equipment is the sole New
Zealand distributor for Sakai compaction
equipment and currently has in excess of
50-percent market share for compaction
rollers,” says Fuller. “This is largely due to
Sakai’s esteemed reliability and overall cost
effective ownership.”
Sakai was founded in Japan in May, 1918,
for the manufacture and repair of diesel
locomotives and their engines. Since then,
the company has evolved and grown to an
annual production of over 4000 vibratory
compactors per year.
