CANCER’S
POWER SUPPLY
By Maureen Pelletier, MD, CCN, FACOG
Dr. Otto Warburg was awarded
the Nobel Prize more than 70 years
ago for his discovery that cancer cells
use glucose at a rate 10 to 50 times
higher than healthy cells through
direct glycolysis via non-oxidative
pathways.1 Called “the Warburg
Effect,” this characteristic hypermetabolic activity fuels the explosive
growth of cancer, steals glucose from
healthy tissue and produces metabolic byproducts that contribute to
systemic illness. Warburg theorized
that if the uptake of glucose into
cancer cells could be inhibited, their
energy supply could be choked off,
slowing or stopping cancer growth
and forcing cancer cells to die.
A few years later, Hungarian biochemist Dr. Albert Szent-Gyorgyi,
also a Nobel Laureate, began seeking
the explanation for low rates of cancer among populations that consume
substantial amounts of whole-grain
products, compared to populations that don’t. By the early 1980s,
Szent-Gyorgyi had isolated natural
compounds within wheat germ that
he believed would have anti-cancer
properties if consumed in supplemental amounts.2
Recent research has linked the
findings of these two Nobel Laureates: A unique fermented wheatgerm extract (FWGE) blocks glucose
uptake within cancer cells, choking
off their energy supply, reducing
their ability to grow and proliferate,
and eventually causing cancer cell
death by apoptosis, without any detrimental effect to healthy cells.

The limitations of conventional
cytotoxic anti-cancer treatments
such as radiation and chemotherapy
are clear. They are lethal to both
cancerous and healthy cells, so they
produce highly undesirable side effects up to and including raising the
risk of future cancers. These shortcomings led to the development of
targeted therapies (i.e., smart drugs)
that inhibit molecular targets present

or overabundant only in cancer cells.
However, the initial exuberance over
the early successes of these targeted
therapies has been balanced in recent
years by the discovery that the mutated
genes which produce such molecular
targets continue to mutate over time.
This means the molecular targets assume new shapes over time and are no
longer affected by drugs designed to
bind to an earlier, original version of the
target.3-5
Targets offered by the Warburg Effect
are very different. They are not the
result of mutated genes. Instead, they
are simply enzymes upon which cancer
cells are far more dependent than are
normal cells. These enzyme targets are
stable over time; essential to tumor cell
growth, survival and proliferation; and
are present in virtually all cancers. The
opportunity to focus effectively on such
targets has existed in theory for some
time, but has become a reality only in
recent years, as the tools of modern science have caught up with the wisdom
and intuition of visionaries from threequarters of a century ago.
New Tools Illuminate Warburg
Effect Metabolic Targets
Dr. Warburg noted in his Nobel acceptance speech that fully understanding cell metabolism was extremely
difficult because of the fast and shortlived nature and overwhelming number of chemical reactions that make up
metabolic pathways.6 He knew what
happened – that cancer cells used large
amounts of glucose to thrive – but he
didn’t know the biochemical details of
exactly how they did so.
In the mid- and late-1990s, researchers developed sophisticated new tools
for studying metabolic reactions in
cells in precise detail.7 One such technique, called stable isotope-based dynamic metabolic profiling (SiDMAP),
uses glucose tagged with special, heavy
isotopes of carbon (C-13) to trace the
use of glucose in the synthesis of RNA,
DNA and fatty acids. The technique
identifies which key metabolic chemicals can be used as targets – targets
that if blocked can thwart cancer cells’
SUMMER 2008 ability to obtain energy or to make the
DNA necessary to replicate.
FWGE Inhibits Warburg-Effect
Metabolism
The SiDMAP technique of metabolic
profiling was applied to understanding
how Szent-Gyorgyi’s fermented wheatgerm extract (FWGE) affected metabolism in MIA pancreatic cancer cells.
SiDMAP showed that pancreatic cancer
cells utilized vast amounts of glucose
for the carbon atoms they contain. The
Warburg Effect in these cells bypasses
the slower oxygen-dependent pathways
of normal cells. Pancreatic cancer cells
utilize the non-oxidative transketolase
(TK) enzyme pathway, incorporating
carbon atoms from glucose to make ribose, the sugar that forms the backbone
of RNA and DNA required for cancer
cell proliferation and tumor metastasis.8
The FWGE produced a radical, dosedependent inhibition of transketolase
(TK), slowing glucose uptake into
pancreatic cancer cells and inhibiting
the cells’ synthesis of RNA. At the same
time, FWGE increased direct glucose
oxidation and ribose recycling in the
pentose cycle – hallmarks of normal
cell metabolism. The cancer cells were
forced to revert to the metabolic pathways used by normal cells, using glucose
more for production of fatty acids and
cell-structure components and less for
ribose. These metabolic shifts promoted
cell differentiation to normal cell phenotypes in some cells, and caused death
by apoptosis in other cancer cells.9
FWGE has been shown to have
similar results with many other types
of cancer. In a study with Jurkat leukemia, cells were treated with increasing amounts of FWGE for 48 and 72
hours.10 TK activity was inhibited by
more than 50 percent in two days and
by more than 90 percent in three days.
Glucose carbons going into new nucleic
acids so new cancer cells could be made
were reduced by 40.2 percent, reducing
cell proliferation. The leukemia cells’
ability to obtain energy was inhibited by
over 95 percent in 48 hours by FWGE
inhibition of the activity of hexokinase,
an enzyme key to energy production
via glycolysis. Simultaneous inhibition
of enzymes key to both oxidative and
non-oxidative glucose utilization led to
apoptosis.
FWGE also inhibited the enzyme
glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase
(G6PDH), a metabolic enzyme essential for using glucose carbons to
make ribose through another pathway.
G6PDH levels fell by more than 90
percent in three days at a dose of 0.5
mg/ml of FWGE, and by more than 95
percent in a shorter time with a higher
dose. This showed an ability of the
FWGE to virtually eliminate cancer
cell proliferation through inhibition
of both major and minor pathways of
cancer cell synthesis of ribose.11
Further evidence that the anti-cancer
effect of FWGE is not dependent
on the cancer type was illustrated in
experiments with estrogen-sensitive
(ER+) and estrogen-negative (ER-)
breast cancers. Tumor lines from mice
and from humans were implanted in
female mice. FWGE inhibited ER+
tumors by 50 percent, better than
the 42 percent inhibition rate for the
tamoxifen, 26 percent for exemestane
and 25 percent for anatrozole. On the
ER- cancers, the anti-estrogenic drugs
tamoxifen, exemestane and anatrozole
have been shown to be ineffective, but
FWGE was just as effective, inhibiting
tumor gowth by 52 percent.12 Because FWGE inhibited growth of both
estrogen-sensitive (ER+) and estrogenindependent (ER-) tumors equally, the
data suggest it was the restriction of
the Warburg Effect’s glucose uptake
for energy and cell replication that was
responsible, rather than interference
with estrogen activity.
Clinical Anti-Cancer Effects of
FWGE Inhibition of Warburg-Effect
Metabolism
Proof of the principle that FWGE can
inhibit cancers by targeting the Warburg
Effect has been shown in many in vivo and
in vitro experiments and has shown promise in clinical trials.
In a multicenter clinical trial involving
170 patients with colorectal cancer, FWGE
continued on page 190

Unplugging Cancer’s Power Supply continued from page 189
reduced the risk of death by almost 70
percent.13 The 66 patients taking supplemental quantities of FWGE had improved
overall survival compared to controls (12.1
percent deaths vs. 31.7 percent); far fewer
recurrences (3.0 percent vs. 17.3 percent)
and far fewer metastases (7.6 percent
vs. 23.1 percent). FWGE’s inhibition of
glucose uptake and use of glucose carbons
to synthesize ribose for DNA for proliferation were significant factors in the slower
disease progression and increased survival.
As a result of these and other findings,
FWGE is now part of the standard of care
for colorectal cancer in Hungary, where
FWGE is approved as a medical nutriment
in support of patients undergoing treatment.
Clinical studies of FWGE in squamous
cell cancers of the head and neck
(SCHNN) led a European surgeons association specializing in head and neck
cancers to approve a recommendation that
FWGE be a routine part of the standard of
care for treatment of all such cancers.14
In the first study, 50 head and neck
cancer patients were treated with
surgery, chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy, with or without the addition of
FWGE. Three years later, the majority of
those receiving FWGE, including five of
six with advanced salivary gland cancer,
had no new recurrences or metastasis.
Benefits of conventional treatments were
enhanced by FWGE, and side effects were
reduced. Patients on FWGE gained appetite, weight and strength.
In the second study, involving 45 adults
with stage II or stage III cancers of the
mouth, addition of FWGE to surgery,
chemotherapy and radiation reduced the
risk of the cancer progressing to a more
advanced stage by 85.3 percent, mainly by
reducing risk of metastasis (spread). At five
years, 74 percent of FWGE patients were
alive, compared to 45.5 percent of patients
getting only conventional treatment.
In the third study, Italian researchers
found that 60 days of FWGE after surgery
and other conventional treatment for
advanced head and neck cancer patients
(stages III and IV) improved the patients’
quality of life (Spitzer QOL index), lowered oxidative stress and prevented weight
loss in the 22 who got FWGE, compared
to the 33 who didn’t. This led researchers
to report FWGE as having a pivotal benefit

in the treatment of patients with advanced
head and neck cancers.
FWGE has been shown to slow disease
progression in stage III melanoma patients15 and to improve quality of life and

The data from clinical studies of
FWGE show improved overall survival,
improved disease-free survival, and
improved quality of life with no undesirable effects on healthy tissue. These
benefits make it clear that targeting the
mechanisms of Warburg-Effect metabolism, which is restricted to cancer cells,
provides unique opportunities to benefit
patients without the undesirable side
effects characteristic of cytotoxic cancer
therapies, and without the narrow applicability and target slippage of “smart”
synthetic drugs. The incredibly innovative and insightful cancer research begun
by another century’s brightest scientists
has come full circle. We now know not
just that Warburg and Szent-Gyorgyi
were right, but also why. We can see how
cancer patients have benefited from the
work of these geniuses, and how and
why they are likely to continue to do so.

Washing laundry with harsh chemical detergents can have an undesirable effect on anyone, particularly those who are
chemically sensitive. Unwelcome side effects include allergies, skin irritation and rashes that are caused by the dyes, phosphorous, perfumes and other allergens added to chemical detergents.
In wastewater treatment plants detergent is one of the most difficult chemicals to remove from water. The same problem
occurs when clothes are washed in detergent. The chemicals remain in the laundry and are absorbed by people through the
skin and nose, resulting in allergies, which afflict millions of Americans.
Now, with the trio T-Wave Cleaning Capsules, you can eliminate chemical
detergents and powders, as well as dryer fabric softener sheets and let your water
do the cleaning. The activated ceramics in these remarkable little capsules react
with water to increase its solvency, so it penetrates fabric and lifts out dirt without additives. The capsules last up to 700 wash loads in a top-loading machine
or 500 in a front-loading machine. Add a capful of the included Tsunami Papaya
Enzyme bleach replacement to brighten both whites and colors. Kit includes
three capsules and one 32-ounce bottle of papaya enzyme.
Remarks Lyle Hurd, publisher of totalhealth Magazine: “Our family has been
using T-Wave Laundry Capsules exclusively for more than eight years. Not only
have we avoided the numerous negatives of commercial detergents over some
2000 washings, we estimate we have saved a minimum of $300 on detergent
during that period. The laundry capsules make a great gift and should be an
imperative for pregnant women and families with young children.”
The T-Wave Laundry Capsule Kit retails for $59.95. Visit www.shop.tsunamiwave.com and

thesis, the primary source of cellular energy depends
upon the driving source of electrons and protons.
Given the required amount of electrons, free radicals
(molecules with a missing electron) can be instantly
stabilized. Many clinically used drugs such as calcium
channel blockers and anaesthetics interact specifically
with ion channels. Many major pharmaceutical companies are showing increasing interest in ion channels as a
new drug target. (Young et al, 2001). However, very little research has been invested in decoding endogenous
electrical signals and the mathematical resultant of their
overall activity. It is possible to electronically resonate
the mathematical resultant of physiological energy as
pioneer Pollock (1988-2008) has recently done in his
lab by composing a pure analog multi-sine waveform
that acts as a key to a lock with muscle neurons. Such
pure analog waveform may act as a reparative force
in itself, as well as an electronic diplomat to awaken
the activation of biological reparative mechanisms involved in extended longevity.

Biological
The aging process cannot be conceptualized by examining a single gene or a single pathway, but can
best be addressed at the systems level. Aging is
not only the sum total of shortened telomeres, denatured1 proteins and DNA molecules, or oxidative
damage in the mitochondria. It attacks key regulatory nodes crucial for the stability of the biological
network. Aging is the dynamic process of increasing
imbalances in the organism as a result of degenerating biological processes. The old, the ill, and the
injured all suffer from disarranged patterns of atoms.
A single substitution of an A for a G in a DNA molecule can cause a significant change in the conductance of the molecule leading to cancer. Shaklin et
al (2008) recently reported that a single substitution
in the amino acid sequence of an enzyme changed
its function into that of a theoretical distant ancestor. “It’s as if we turned back the clock nearly 2.5
billion years, to the time when oxygen first appeared
in Earth’s atmosphere, to get a snapshot of how enzymes evolved to deal with reactive oxygen species,”
said Shanklin, biochemist in the Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. Such research findings demonstrate how the
sequence and interrelations of amino acids in a protein, or the sequence of base pairs in a DNA molecule
can become determining factors between health and
disease, aging and youth. Research has shown that
gene expression is stronger when the gene is attached
to the nuclear envelope (the membrane that surrounds the nucleus) than when the gene moves
away from the nuclear envelope (Taddei et al, 2008).
In other words, cells make use of the nuclear architecture or spatial organization of the nucleus to
code epigenetic information. The DNA sequence
alone doesn’t determine everything. The importance
of nuclear architecture in regulating gene expression
begs for scientific observation that goes beyond the
study of atoms and molecules, i.e. the organism’s components. It is imperative that research focuses on the
interrelations, sequence, orientation and spatial organization of an organism’s atoms and molecules, i.e.
the dynamic processes that characterize the organism’s vital functions and survival. Electrical charge
is a dynamic entity emerging from opposites such as
protons and electrons attracting each other. How is
electricity related to biological processes? Recent research has shown that DNA, proteins and cells, including stem cells, appear to be electrical in that they
demonstrate conductivity or the presence of ionic
currents (Li et al, 2008; Brown et al 2008). ATP syn-

We are aging. Why?
We used to think the answer is simple. We are born
fresh and young and eventually the system breaks down
and dies. But how about the body’s immune defenses
and self reparative and self detox mechanisms such as
the following? (1) J. Chang & Reiner (2007) found that
after the initial infection, some of the descendents of an
immune cell reacting to a microbe must become the soldiers that fight the infection and die; but some, instead,
regenerate to take the place of the mother cell, leaving
an immunologic memory to recognize the invading microbe in the future. (2) The consensus on DNA and aging is that endogenous electron transport within DNA
empowers DNA to deflect oxidative damage away from
its important sections. (3) Studies have shown that
aging is accelerated by suppressing a cellular cleanupmechanism known as autophagy engulfing damaged
cellular proteins or molecules (Finley 2003-2004). (4)
Science Daily (April 17, 2008) published an article
on a complex safety mechanism that drives damaged
cells to apoptosis (cell death). Steegborn and Wolters
(2008) identified the part of Protein p66Shc that is responsible for a cell’s suicide and they additionally ascertained the precise mechanism of its regulation. In order
for the self-destruction to be initiated, several protein
components must work together. The complex can apparently be decomposed by the cell’s repair mechanisms

for precisely as long as the cell damages are repairable.
Only when the cell is defective beyond repair does it
perish. (5) Reed et al (2008) has identified a fragment of
a protein that senses chemicals that induce a cell to move
into the right direction. This protein is involved in the choreography of cell migration that is vital in the development
and survival of the organism. These are a few examples of
2

a vast body of studies demonstrating cellular memory
and more importantly, cellular intelligence. Research
delineates the biological system as a dynamic entity
equipped to control its destiny. Life does not appear
to be an automatic linear progression from new to old.
The cells in our bodies are not born to simply march
to their death. Could it be that aging is reversible?
Youth and aging are simple concepts, they are easy to
understand as a whole because they are easily identifiable. Everyone can distinguish a young person from
an older person no matter how much Plastic Surgery,
Botox, Fillers, Thermage and Laser treatments this
older person has had. Young and Old are simple concepts because they are dynamic wholes or Gestalts
that are greater than the components that orchestrate
them. Color white is a Gestalt because it reflects and
transmits all the wavelengths of light corresponding to our perception of all other colors, blue, green,
yellow, red. Color white is a new entity that is easily distinguished from all other colors that compose it.
Following this line of reasoning we pose the question:
“What are the components of aging?” The simple answer seems to be: the sum total of biological dysfunctions. But how does any biological dysfunction affect
the remaining normal operations of an organism -- a
disruption analogous to that caused by a car accident
in rush hour traffic? What about oxidative damage as
a result of energy production in the mitochondria or
environmental pollution, analogous to adverse weather
conditions? What about inadequate cell energy (ATP),
analogous to an electrical power shortage, shutting
down traffic lights and central computer networks? We
now know that longevity genes are like a 911 command
center that help repair biological damage like progenitor cells for example (Sinclair 2007). Progenitor cells
are like stem cells in that progenitor cells have a capacity to differentiate into a specific type of cell. In contrast to stem cells, however, progenitor cells are pushed
to differentiate only into their "target" cell. Progenitor
cells lie dormant or possess little activity in the tissue in
which they reside. They exhibit slow growth and their
main role is to replace cells lost by normal attrition. In
case of tissue injury, damaged or dead cells, progenitor
cells can be activated the way a 911 center would be
activated.
Stem Cells (ESCs) Depend on Ionic Currents
SUMMER 2008
Embryonic Stem Cells (ESCs), require specific signals
for correct differentiation. If injected directly into the
body, ESCs will differentiate into many different types
of cells, causing a teratoma (neoplasm, tumor or cancer).
Li et al (2008) from Johns Hopkins University that has
specialized in genetically engineering stem cells and has
engineered heart cells derived from human ESCs, reports that the problem with human ESC-based therapies
is the potential for engineered grafts to go haywire after
transplantation and form tumors. “We therefore decided
to explore the existence of ion channels in pluripotent,
or versatile, human ESCs because electrical activity is
known to regulate cell differentiation and proliferation,”
says Li. Li et al (2008) have discovered the presence
of functional ion channels that act like electrical wires
in human ESCs. Such research may minimize the dangers that human ESC-based therapies presently has and
may enhance longevity by transplanting unlimited supplies of healthy, specialized cells into damaged organs.
“In a number of different cell types, from cancer to Tlymphocytes, Potassium (K+) channels are responsible
for altering the membrane voltage of cells,” says Li. “We
found that blocking potassium channels in ESCs also
slowed their growth,” says Li. “Our findings may lead
to genetic strategies that suppress undesirable cell division after transplantation, not only for ESCs and their
derivatives, but perhaps for adult stem cells as well.”
DNA: The Spark of Life
Hoeijmakers et al (2008) found that mutation of the
DNA repair gene ERCC1 induced symptoms associated
with aging. They also found that accumulation of unrepaired DNA in the cellular system can contribute to normal aging. Since 1980 (Davidovitch et al) experimental
researchers have reported that nucleotides, the subunits
of DNA and RNA, seem to be intimately involved in the
cellular response to the stream of electrons. Many investigators have attempted to measure the electrical conductivity of DNA. However, it is very difficult to control all
the parameters that may affect the conductivity of DNA,
e.g., length, conformation, ionic environment, humidity,
experimental protocols, and many other factors. Inomata
et al (2007) measured the electrical conductivity of DNA
using fine electrodes with a gap of about 200 nanometers
and found that DNA contained both conducting and
insulating parts. Electrical conduction in DNA appeared
to be temperature dependent. DNA has been shown to
conduct an alternating current, but not direct currents.
The consensus is that electron transport within DNA allows DNA to deflect oxidative damage away from its
vital sections. If DNA damage is one of the primary
causes of aging, then a steady electron infusion via an
electronic device that can reinforce electron transport
within DNA may potentially enhance longevity.
Brown et al (2008) conducted a well controlled experiment where the usage of nanotubes allowed for a more
accurate measure of DNA conductivity. DNA molecules
are only 2 nanometers wide. A nanotube is as thick as
DNA. Using nanotechnology in their apparatus allowed

Brown et al (2008) to confirm that DNA is conductive. Brown also tested the null hypothesis by adding
an enzyme to the surrounding liquid that cuts DNA,
and as expected the electrical circuit was broken. If
one of the bases in a DNA pair is changed, however,
the two strands
will still stick together, but with
an altered structure around the
mismatched bases. The team first
measured
the
conductivity of
a well matched
strand and then
exchanged it for
a strand with a single mismatch. This single mismatch
boosted the resistance of the DNA by a factor of 300
demonstrating the need to make measurements on
duplex DNA that is well-matched, undamaged, and
in its native conformation. These results suggest that
prior contradictory evidence on DNA conductivity
may be due to methodological difficulties resulting
in DNA damage that compromised its conductivity.
Brown et al’s results (2008) on mismatched DNA
strands highlights the heightened sensitivity of the
molecular system to the slightest disorganization of
its components. It is reminiscent of atomic theorems
that one atomic arrangement can make coals; yet rearranging the atoms in a different sequence can make
diamonds. It is also reminiscent of a Gestalt principle
where the dynamic whole is transformed depending
on the arrangement of its parts. How are all these
philosophical propositions relevant to Medicine and
longevity? It introduces a perspective where the piecemeal study of biological elements is complemented
by the study of how these elements are interacting to
form a whole. Tao and Zhang (2005) found that just
a single base pair mutation in a DNA molecule, such
as substituting an A for a G, can cause a significant
change in the conductance of the molecule. These researchers actually “wired” DNA to identify mutations
and track mutations for cancer research. A number
of researchers have studied genes implemented in
DNA mismatch. Kramer et al (1989) studied gene
PMS1 and its involvement in repairing DNA nucleotide mismatch. Baker et al (2007) postulated that
the formation of DNA-protein cross-links (DPCs)
by chemicals or radiation is often accompanied by
damage responses. Nanotechnology scientists such as
Lee et al (2008) from Ohio University have managed
to uncoil DNA and form them into precise patterns
to use them as wires in biologically based electronics

/ medical devices. The problem with manipulating DNA,
however, is that an accidental nucleotide substitution could
lead to mutations and disease. Since DNA demonstrates
conductivity in its native conformations, it may be plausible to study the electrical circuits emerging out of electron
transport within DNA. The common denominator of such
electrical circuits may delineate a resultant DNA energy
form with a specific pattern and rhythm. Subsequently,
we could develop an electronic device that resonates such
“central control waveform” serving as a DNA “pacemaker”
for damaged DNA.
Electrical Properties of Proteins.
Mc Leoh et al (1987) investigated the effect of electric
current on protein biosynthesis in mammalian fibroblasts.
Protein synthesis was (1) orientation specific (only cells
parallel to the electric field responded); (2) frequency specific -- around .5 Hz and (3) current density specific -around of .3 microamps. Results suggest cell-mediated
changes in tissue repair and remodeling. Other cells such
as ganglion cells respond to 2 microamps/c2 and .5 Hz.
Simoncini & Moody (1991) in the University of Washington showed that the development of electrical properties
in these cells involves RNA and Protein Synthesis. When
transcription (DNA converted to RNA) is blocked the
Ca2+ and outward K+ currents fail to appear. The presence
and significance of electrical energies in the primal components of cellular memory (DNA) and cellular intelligence
(proteins) begs for more research focused on the decoding
and resonance of ionic current waveforms for future implementation in medical treatments.
Development, Tissue Healing & Ionic Currents
A number of research studies appear to place ionic currents in the very essence of living matter. All embryos investigated by Nucciteli’s team (2003) drove Ionic currents
through themselves (100 microamps per square centimeter)
and these currents generated internal electric fields. These
findings are reminiscent of Li’s proposition (2008) that
Embryonic Stem Cells are regulated by ionic currents. In
investigating embryo chickens, Nucciteli et al (2003) found
that the chicks’ internal electric fields were important for
the development of their tail structures. Reducing the
magnitude of the chick’s endogenous electric fields resulted
in abnormal tail development. Nucciteli et al (2002, 2003,
2004) have reported that
mammalian skin wounds
generate endogenous electric fields of 150 millivolts
per millimeter. These endogenous electric fields
are lateral to the wound.
Epidermal wounds exhibit
lateral endogenous electric
fields of 40 millivolts per
millimeter. These specifications of endogenous electric fields suggest that external
electric fields that may promote developmental growth or
wound healing should be limited to magnitudes of less than

0.1 volts per millimeter. Endogenous wound electric
fields have been shown to exist naturally at the site of
a lesion since more than 150 years ago when the German physiologist Emil Du-Bois Reymond first identified them. Several experiments have indicated that
when the endogenous electric field is experimentally
removed, the wound healing rate is 25% slower. Nucciteli (2003) reports that nearly every clinical trial using electric fields to stimulate healing in mammalian
wounds has a significant increase in the rate of healing from 13 to 50%. Mukerjee et al (2006) fabricated
a microneedle array and applied it to the measurement of transdermal skin potentials in human subjects. Potential changes were recorded in the vicinity
of superficial wounds, confirming the generation of
a lateral electric field in human skin. The measured
electric field decayed with distance from the wound
edge. Additionally, the electric field was directed
towards the wound, in other words it had a specific
orientation. The measurement of endogenous fields
in skin is a prelude to the study of the therapeutic efficacy of applied electric fields to chronic non-healing
wounds.
Electrons as Anti-oxidant in Wound Healing
Lee et al (2005) used ultra low microcurrent (from
3 milliampere to 400 nano amperes) combined with
low frequencies and an adjustable voltage to attain
constant current, to treat 25 chronic skin ulcers with
the following chronic etiologies: AIDS, Arterial Insufficiency, CerebroVascular
Accident,
Chronic Obstructive
Pulmonary Disease,
Chronic Renal Failure, Congestive Cardiac Failure, Spinal
Cord Injury, Traumatic Brain Injury
and Venous Stasis.
100% of the lesions
treated with nano
current healed in a
maximum time of 7
weeks. Average time
of healing was 48
hours of treatment
over 16 days. Surgical debridement was
unnecessary as the
necrotic tissue appeared to disappear spontaneously.
The lower the frequency the faster the healing. None
of the healed lesions showed any sign of recurrence
after a period ranging from six to eighteen months.
SUMMER 2008 Treating chronic skin ulcers with ultra-low microcurrent
(nano amperes) eliminates the age factor by equalizing the
healing rate at all ages. Lee et al (2005) postulated that healing was the result of nano current acting as an anti-oxidant
by infusing a steady stream of electrons through the cells with
as little resistance as possible. Mitochondria is the principal
source of energy for all cells, but also the primary site of free
radical production as a result of oxidation (loss of electrons).
Free radicals are highly reactive molecules with one unpaired
electron that damage cellular structures such as membranes,
proteins, leading to protein denaturation (image), and cause
nuclear and mitochondrial DNA denaturation (image).
Mictochondrial DNA is far more primitive and hence more
vulnerable to damage than nucleus DNA. Mitochondrial
dysfunction is associated with Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease, Heart Disease, Cancer and Aging. Antioxidants
have the ability to donate electrons without becoming free
radicals themselves. Nano current offers an ample supply of
electrons that can stabilize a large number of free radicals.
Molecules on Wheels
A few years ago, Yoshida stated that “there are no living organisms on wheels. He then conducted a unique experiment to test Boyler’s theory (Nobel Prize 1997) regarding
the rotation of ATP synthase. Yoshida fixed the only 10nmdiameter hexamer surrounding the stalk of ATP synthase
with fluorescently labeled 1µm-length actin filaments on the
coverslip, and succeeded in visualizing and videotaping the
rotation of ATP synthase. “Everyone was surprised including
myself because the primitive enzyme in every living organism rotated,” Yoshida reported. Until then It was believed
that living organisms did not favor rotation. The discovery
of ATP synthase rotation gave Broiler the Nobel Prize after
20 years of skepticism rooted in a static view of the biological
system that allowed no room for the systematic rhythmical
movement of cooperative enzymes and molecules working
together like senior factory workers during production time.
Rodelez et al (2005) forced ATP synthesis by a nano apparatus that spined the F1 ATPase clockwise. When ATPase
was released by the nano apparatus that spined it clockwise
motion designed to produce ATP), ATPase resumed its
APT hydrolyzing anti-clockwise rotation that breaks down
ATP to ADP plus a phosphate. Therefore ATPase synthesizes ATP when Fo spins it clockwise and on its own, it spins
anti-clockwise to hydrolyze ATP – a little like saying it goes
forward in time to produce ATP (three phosphates) and
then goes backward in time to return ATP at its earlier stage
of existence when it was only ADP (two phosphates). If
cellular life is fueled by a forward time backward time event
then how could we possibly say with certainty that living
and aging is a linear process that can only go one direction,
from birth to death with no energy conservation mechanism
accounting for anti-clockwise reversal? Cellular energy is
spent by breaking ATP down to ADP which is immediately
recycled in the mitochondria to become recomposed into
ATP. This process depends on the driving force of protons
and electrons, i.e. electricity. In fact, all matter is made of
protons and electrons. Unlike matter, however, electricity is
a dynamic whole, a Gestalt that results from the interrela-

tions between protons and electrons. Electricity is
neither protons nor electrons in themselves but the
electrical charge that results from opposites such
as protons and electrons attracting each other. So
how is electricity related to ATP? The answer may
be as simple as saying: “by providing the body with
an abundance of electrons, the movement of which
is used to build a gradient of protons that spin the
ATP synthase producing ATP, the energy necessary
for the survival of the biological organism.” Electrical ranges of 50 microamps significantly increase
ATP. However, ATP synthesis drops down to zero
at ranges above 1.5 milliampere (Cheng 1982; Santos 2004). A meticulous understanding of the effect that different electrical waveforms have on the
biological system is necessary. Two different sets
of electronic specifications may have vastly different
results.
Nuclear Architecture & Spatial Organization
A fundamental aspect of biological systems is their
spatial organization. Taddei et al (2008) and Gasser
et al (2008) have studied the HXK1 gene of budding yeast. They have found that gene expression
is stronger when the gene is attached to the nuclear
envelope (the membrane that surrounds the nucleus)
than when it moves away from the nuclear envelope
(see image below). In other words, cells make use of
the nuclear architecture to code epigenetic information. The DNA sequence alone doesn’t determine everything. The importance of the spatial organization
or nuclear architecture in regulating gene expression
begs for scientific observation that does not merely
focus on the study of atoms and molecules, (the basic components of a Gestalt); but on the interrelations, sequence, orientation and spatial organization
of these atoms and molecules (the dynamic whole
or Gestalt). In development, regeneration and repair,
directional signals are necessary for the proper placement of the components of the organism. Likewise,
pathogens that invade other organisms rely on directional signals to target vulnerable areas. It is widely
understood that chemical gradients are important
directional signals in living systems. Less well recognized are electrical fields, which can also provide
directional information. Endogenous electrical fields
can generate chemical gradients of charged macromolecules against the leveling action of diffusion.
At the site of a lesion in an ion-transporting epithelium, for example, a substantial electrical field is
instantly generated and may extend over many cell
diameters. Spatial organization of directional electric signals is necessary for the proper placement of
biological components. Small, steady electrical fields
ANTI-AGING MEDICAL NEWS
can directly guide cell movement and growth and they can
direct cell migration during wound healing. The direction of
ion movement towards or against a site is absolutely crucial.
Zhao et al’s (2006) demonstrated that electric currents can
act as directional cues in cell movement and wound healing. These cues activate signaling pathways similar to those
reported for chemotaxis2. Two specific genes PI(3)Kg and
PTEN were identified as the genes essential for electricalsignal-induced wound healing, demonstrating that PI(3)Kg
and PTEN genes control electrotaxis, i.e. the movement of
cells in response to an electric field.
Ionic Currents and Future Research
The relationship between protons and the Na+/K+ (Sodium
/ Potassium) ATP synthase, electrons and oxidative damage are plain and obvious. Everyone who reads about Na+/
K+ ATP synthase reads about protons. Everyone who reads
about free radicals, reads about how free radicals are unstable
molecules in search of their missing electron. Yet, there is a
conspicuous omission of what protons and electrons make
together by virtue of being attracted to each other, i.e. electrical charge. Scientists have been discussing ion channels
long before Neher’s Nobel Lecture (1991) on the Patch
Clamp cell recording method. The cell membrane is studded with special proteins that let selected ions pass across an
otherwise impenetrable barrier. These ion pathways, called
ion channels, are responsible for a wide variety of functions
such as transmission of electrical signals in nervous systems,
initiation of immune responses and cell division. Cells also
contain ion channels in internal membranes, around mitochondria and nuclei for example. Many clinically used drugs
such as calcium channel blockers and anaesthetics interact
specifically with ion channels. Many major pharmaceutical
companies are showing increasing interest in ion channels
as a new drug target. (Young et al, 2001) Yet, very little research has been invested in decoding endogenous electrical
signals that map biological interactions and their outcomes
to investigate the possibility of a “central control biological
waveform” emerging from the sum total of endogenous electrical signals in synch, in a healthy body. This “central control biological waveform” is a dynamic Gestalt distinguished
from its parts like white light is perceived as distinctly different from all other colors that compose it. Identifying such a
“master physiological waveform” may serve as the blueprint
for a device with a multi sine waveform that can boost, revive
or replace inadequate or erratic endogenous ionic currents
providing the body with a type of a versatile pacemaker designed for a number of biological functions at the molecular
level. Biological signals must be first analyzed in terms of
their amperage, frequency, voltage, spatial organization; then
translated into electronic signals that comply with the biological specifications. Electronic signals will then be intertwined to orchestrate a key “central control waveform” built
on the basis of information attained from observations of
molecular interactions and architecture – a process similar
to that done in Pollock’s lab (1988-2008). Using his expertise on the Pacemaker technology, Pollock (2008) built a
pure analog, multi-sine “smart” waveform that decodes and

Conclusion
A meta analysis of current anti-aging research up
to April 2008 was cited from a systemic perspective, envisioning the biological processes in flux with
complexities arising out of the sequence, interactions,
motion and orientation of its elements. Quantum
Physics has shown us that when we are looking at
an atom, we are not looking at a unit, we are looking
at a dynamic whole, a Gestalt formed out of energy
interrelationships. In looking at a protein we are not
looking at a separate entity with a specific function
like a bolt or a screw. We are looking at a Gestalt
of amino acid connections by virtue of their electromagnetic charges. Changes in the sequence of these
amino acids will alter not only the composition of
the protein but its fate and function. Yet none of
these amino acids viewed individually are a protein in
themselves. When the 20 different amino acids that
cells use are linked together, they form over 100,000
proteins by virtue of thousands and thousands of different ways in which they can be combined.
then returns in its entirety as if it never broke. Isn’t this an
example of the CPT theorem involving Charge, represented
by protons and electrons, Parity reflects the space inversion
of the clockwise and anti-clockwise rotation, and Time?
Can the old, the ill, and the injured merely reflect disarranged patterns of molecular elements interrupting biological processes, a concept equivalent to multiple car accidents
in rush hour traffic? A single substitution of an A for a G
in a DNA molecule can cause a significant change in the
conductance of the molecule leading to cancer. Shanklin et al
(2006) reported that a single substitution in the amino acid
sequence of an enzyme changed its function into that of a
theoretical distant ancestor, as if in a single stroke one could
turn the clock 2.5 billion years back. Such evidence gives us
an inkling that aging may be reversible. Opening our minds
to such hypotheses, taking risks in initiating research that
is impossible to complete in a lifetime may indeed help us
unlock biological secrets that are presently beyond our realm
of understanding and belief system.
Proactive Anti-aging Medicine
Diverse research evidence has been integrated to elucidate
the dynamic organization of the biological system and the
need for a multidisciplinary approach to anti-aging. We
rely on research in Medicine and Physiology; Genetic research for information on genes associated with the aging
process; Molecular Biology for a more detailed analysis of
the structure and multi-functions of the cells; Medical research on health, anti-aging and disease; Quantum Physics to delineate interrelationships between ionic particles;
Mathematics to organize data and give us insight of vector theory and dynamic fields; Systems theory to simplify
information processing by grouping and categorization; the
Gestalt principle to identify processes composed by other
underlying sub-processes; Cellular Architecture to identify the detailed design and spatial organization of the biological organism; Electronics and computer programming
to reconstruct and resonate organic functions aiming towards a technology that enhances reparative mechanisms,
extending longevity. No science is irrelevant in grasping
the grand scheme that sustains life. Not only Physiology
and Medicine but all other disciplines are necessary for
advancing to Proactive Anti-aging Health Services.

Flaxseed for Heart-Healthy Nutrition
By John H. Maher, DC, DCCN, FAIIM
The use of flaxseed in food and beverages, functional foods and dietary
supplements has risen dramatically. This
is related to the increasingly recognized
benefits of flax’s rich omega-3 fatty acid,
lignan (powerful phytonutrient phytoestrogens/antioxidants) and fiber content.
A typical flax profile is approximately
40% fat, being mostly omega-3 as alphalinolenic acid (ALA); 28% dietary fiber,
21% protein, 4% mineral ash and 6%
carbohydrates.1 To get an idea of how
omega-3 ALA rich flaxseed is compared
to other ALA-rich foods, the following
should be instructive.
One and a half teaspoons of ground
flaxseed supply 1,000 mg of ALA in 40
calories. One half teaspoon of flaxseed
oil supplies the same 1,000 mg ALA in
20 calories. To get the same 1,000 mg
of ALA, the following amounts of other
sources is needed:
• five walnut halves,
(70 calories);
• 2 teaspoons of canola oil,
(80 calories);
• 1 tablespoon of wheat germ or
soybean oil (120 calories);
• 2 ounces of salmon, herring albacore,
sardine, rainbow trout, or eel (100
calories);
• 9-12 ounces of most other fish, (300
calories or more);
• 5 cups cooked broccoli, (220
calories);
• 10 cups cooked spinach (280 calories);
• ¾ cup soy nuts (285 calories); and
• ¼ cup rice bran oil, (480 calories).2
And all of the above plant sources are
richer in omega 6 than omega 3. None
has flax’s most desirable 3 to 1 omega-3
to omega-6 ratio.3
ALA, EPA, DHA
ALA is converted in the body to
eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and, to a
much lesser extent, docosahexaenoic
acid (DHA).4,5 EPA and DHA as such
are found abundantly in fish oil. Both of
these longer-chain omega 3 fatty acids
are known for their salubrious effects on
cardiovascular health.6 However, flaxseed
also has impressive support for its hearthealth-promoting benefits.
ALA Improves Heart Health
Below is a small list of scientific studies
supporting the benefit of a high-ALA diet
derived from plant sources.
• Supplementation with 8 g/day of
ALA resulted in significantly lower
systolic and diastolic blood pressure
levels. There was observed a hypotensive effect of ALA, which may constitute another mechanism accounting in
part for the apparent cardioprotective
effect of this n-3 fatty acid.7
• To compare the effects of ALA to
EPA + DHA on cardiovascular risk
markers in healthy elderly subjects, a
randomized double-blind nutritional intervention study was done on 37 mildly
hypercholesterolemic subjects (14 men
and 23 women ages 60 to 78 years.)
During a run-in period of three weeks,
subjects consumed an omega 6, oleic
acid-rich (LN) diet. The following six
weeks, 10 subjects remained on the control diet, 13 subjects consumed an ALArich diet (6.8 g/day) and 14 subjects
an EPA/DHA-rich diet (1.05 g EPA/
day + 0.55 g DHA/day). The researches
concluded in the European Journal of
Clinical Nutrition that in healthy elderly
subjects, ALA might affect concentrations of LDL cholesterol and apoB more
favorably than EPA/DHA.8
• The Health Professionals Follow-up
Study reported in the British Medical
Journal a 1% increase in ALA as a percent of total calories associated with a
40% risk reduction in nonfatal coronary
heart disease.9
• A 2001 article in the Journal of Nutrition Health and Aging noted that both
Crete and Japan have the greatest life
expectancy among First World countries. They also enjoy the highest levels
of dietary ALA and the lowest intakes
of saturated fat.10
• The Lyon Diet Heart Study included
as participants patients who had survived a myocardial infarction (MI). The
experimental group consumed a typical
Mediterranean-style diet rich in ALA.
The controls enjoyed a diet low in ALA,
typical of the Standard American Diet

SUMMER 2008
Flaxseed for Heart-Healthy Nutrition (SAD). The experimental ALA group
had a 75% reduction in nonfatal myocardial infarctions and a 70% reduction
in death from all causes compared to
the SAD group.11
A number of studies have focused on
the health benefits provided specifically
by flax.
• Women who consumed 50 g of milled
flax a day (1/8 cup) for four weeks
garnered total blood and LDL-cholesterol level reductions of 9% and 18%,
respectively.12
• The Journal of Nutrition reported in
2004 that two ways ALA may protect
the heart are through (1) improvements
in abnormal heart rhythms; and (2) a
reduction of blood platelet stickiness
and resultent.13
• Also in 2004, data from the Nurses
Health Study demonstrated that the
higher the ALA intake, the lower the
plasma concentrations of CRP.14 The
following year, the European Journal
of Clinical Nutrition reported that a
diet high in ALA dramatically decreased CRP in men and women with
high cholesterol levels.15 In 2005, the
American Heart Association presented
studies showing ALA lowers C-reactive
protein (CRP), an ever-more-important
biomarker of inflammation.
• Lowering C-reactive protein may be
as important as reducing LDL cholesterol for heart attacks and stroke
prevention.16 Fifty percent of all strokes
and MI in the United States and
Canada happen to persons with normal
cholesterol findings. Twenty percent of
all major cardiovascular events happen
to folks with no major risk factors!17
• Even more recently, the American
Journal of Physiology Heart and Physiology Circulation shared that in rabbits
with hypercholesterolemia, dietary
flaxseed inhibited vascular contraction
and atherosclerosis formation.18
• Lanzmann and Petithory, in a review
of studies focusing on flax and ALA,
concluded that this ALA rich essential
fatty acid (EFA) source may reduce
ventricular fibrillation.19
• The above research is leading to a
consensus that flaxseed has very benefiSUMMER 2008 continued from page 208
cial effects in the prevention of cardiovascular disease.20,21 It is apparent even
from this brief introductory review
that the cardioprotective benefits of a
flaxseed-rich diet come from numerous
salubrious mechanisms. This research
suggests that these many benefits occur
despite differences in study populations,
length of follow-up, outcomes, and
methods of statistical analysis.
ALA RDA?
At the present time, there is no Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for
EFAs in the U.S. However, the National
Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommends 1.6 g/day of
ALA for men and 1.1 g/day for women.22
Excellent Source of
Dietary Fiber
Numerous health benefits are derived
from consuming ALA in flax. Not to be
overlooked is flaxseed’s dietary fiber content
(28%), which generates additional health
benefits. The American Dietetic Association has cited fiber’s “significant impact” on
obesity, cardiovascular disease and type 2
diabetes prevention and management.23
Flax has a ratio of soluble to insoluble fiber that can vary in a ratio of between one
part soluble to four parts insoluble to four
parts to six parts, respectively.24 Insoluble
dietary fiber supports healthy elimination and colon health, and may even have
protective effects against colon cancer.25
The soluble dietary fiber fraction of flax is
found primarily as mucilage gums, which
have been shown to play a role in lowering
serum cholesterol levels.26 u

Introduction
The versatile medicinal benefits of
certain types of seaweed and their derivatives1,2 have been highlighted recently in
the weight control arena.3-7 While the
value of seaweed-derived fucoxanthin has
attracted much attention as a thermogenic
agent, seaweed contains several other functional components that could benefit an
individual with excessive body weight.7-9
The objective of this article is to sort
science from speculation on the value of
certain types of seaweed and their extracts
as natural medicines, with special reference
to their use in weight control.

Seaweed: A Brief Overview
Seaweed has been used in the food
chain from time immemorial, and there
is a colorful history of its application for
medicinal purposes.9 Seaweed belongs to
a large group of plant life called algae.9
There are two major categories of algae:
unicellular and macroalgae.1,2,9 Unicellular algae include spirulina, chlorella and
plankton. These single-cell algae have
been widely applied in dietary supplements because of their content of vital
nutrients. In contrast, macroalgae are
much bigger organisms and are commonly
known as seaweed or “kelp.”9 These sea
plants have some physiological resemblances to plants on land, and they can
range in size from centimeters to up to
200 meters or more in width or length.9
Seaweeds come in shades of yellow,
brown, blue, green and red, and there are
more than 3,000 species of algae in the
oceans worldwide (Table 1).9
Understanding the “botanical” classification of marine algae is a monumental
task.1,2,9 There are essentially four major
groups of algae that can be classified
by color, namely green (Chlorophyta),
brown/yellow (Phaeophyta), red (Rhodophyta) and blue green (Cyanophyta)
(Table 1).9 The color of algae is deter-

mined by mixtures of pigments that play
a variable role in photosynthesis. These
pigments include chlorophylls, carotenoids and phycobillins.1,2,9
Pigments in seaweeds have important nutraceutical properties including
antioxidant and biological responsemodifying qualities.9 Most relevant to the
present discussions are the carotenoids
found in seaweeds.9-13 These red, orange
or yellow compounds are composed of
short, carbon chain-connected 6-carbon
rings that are hydrophobic (e.g., combinations of mevalonic acid and lycopene
or related compounds). Carotenoids cannot transmit sunlight into photosynthetic
pathways, but they function as accessory
pigments. A prominent accessory or
“helper” pigment is fucoxanthin, which is
responsible for the “brownish” appearance
of kelp.9
Seaweed has been used in several traditional medical systems for many medical
purposes including: nutritional support,
cancer therapy, immune stimulation, body
detoxification, weight control, treatment of viral disease, etc.9 The ability of
many types of seaweed to be adjunctive
to weight control has been known for
many years.11-13 Recent interests involve
the ability of antioxidant compounds in
seaweed, specifically fucoxanthin,3, 11-13 to
promote weight loss.9,11-13 While fucoxanthin has some support for its role as
an enhancer of body metabolism (thermogenic effect), with direct effect on fat
stores,11-13 other components of seaweed
may be of benefit in weight control.7
Many types of seaweed are excellent
sources of dietary iodine, which is an essential element for normal function of the
thyroid gland.5 Deficiencies in the function of the thyroid gland may promote
weight gain, and optimal thyroid function
supports lean body mass. Some seaweeds
contain a variety of trace minerals and
vitamins, which provide general nutritional support for individuals who may
be engaged in calorie-restricted diets.9
The presence of certain poorly absorbed
polysaccharides (or types of “fiber”) in
seaweed may assist in providing “bulk”
in the diet.9 This bulking effect enhances
a sensation of fullness in the stomach
or regular bowel habits. Some of the
complex sugars in seaweed are referred to
as fucoids (glucans), which may stimulate immune function.9 Overall, there
is a large amount of scientific literature

on the use of seaweeds as health food,
soil fertilizers and sources of medicinal
compounds.9
Seaweed in “Natural Medicine”
Several types of seaweed are used
topically in facial treatments, body wraps
and baths, with claims of improvements
in blood circulation, detoxification,
treatment of acne and rosacea and skin
moisturizing, purification, exfoliation or
rejuvenating effects.10 The use of marine
algae in this manner constitutes one aspect of thalassotherapy (Greek: thalassa =
ocean and therapeion = treat), a discipline
based on the belief that “The Sea washes
away all of the ills of mankind.” (Euripides, 480 B.C.)
Many medical or “destination” spas are
using topical seaweed body therapies to
promote skin beauty and health. Seaweed
body treatments are believed to provide
surface minerals that can diffuse into the
skin; and they provide pleasurable and
relaxing experiences when applied in
the correct context. Cosmetic therapists
believe marine algae can enhance skin
circulation, increase local metabolism in
the skin and supporting structures, flush
out toxins and assist in improving skin tone
and smoothness, perhaps by inducing a
mild dermabrasion.10
Certain seaweed applications are believed to be moisturizing and toning for
the skin.10 Specific applications of seaweed
body treatments include attempts to
detoxify the body, treat cellulite, enhance
lymphatic drainage, clear limb swelling
(edema) and even provide rejuvenating
qualities.10 Seaweed “scrubs” are excellent
for skin exfoliation. The evidence base
for these beneficial effects of the topical
application of seaweed remains arguable in
the medical literature.10
Seaweed-Based Nutraceuticals
In addition to the extensive topical use
of seaweed, many types of macroalgae
(kelp or seaweed) are treasured as dietary
inclusions, dietary supplements or sources
of pharmaceuticals.9 Several textbooks and
Internet resources give extensive botanical
profiles of different types of seaweed, with
discussions of their nutritional or potential
medicinal value.9 Examples of particularly
valuable types of seaweed used in oral
SUMMER 2008 supplements include Irish moss (Chondrus
crispus), Fucose or Fucus vesiculosis (Bladderwrack), species of Laminaria, (especially
Laminaria japonica), Sargassum muticum
(Hondawara, Japan and Limu-Lala, Hawaii) and Undaria pinnatifida (Wakame).9
Chondrus crispus, or Irish moss, is an
important source of mixed amino acids,
magnesium and sulfur.9 There is some
evidence that oral intake of Irish moss can
reduce blood cholesterol levels, and it may
have antiviral properties.9 Other proposed
properties of Irish moss include neutralization of gastric acid secretion and possible
exertion of a protective effect on the lining
of the stomach and upper intestines.9 The
sulfur-containing mucopolysaccharides in
Irish moss form a gel when mixed with
water and they are able to retain water up
to 20 times their own weight.9 These gels, in
sufficient dosages, may cause a sensation of
stomach fullness, which is part of the simple,
but valuable “feel-full, weight-loss trick.”
Fucus (Fucose) vesiculosis is a brownish
green seaweed which is in common use in
medicines.9 It is rich in minerals, trace elements, iodine and vitamin C. It has found
application as a dietary source of iodine
and a promoter of immune function.9
Fucoxanthins are abundant in Fucose or
Fucus types of seaweed.4 Independent
laboratory studies suggest this antioxidant
can exert significant thermogenic effects
and assist directly in weight loss.7,11-13
These effects have been noted to be additive with exercise.7
Several species of Laminaria are prized
types of medicinal seaweed that have
been used often in traditional Japanese
medicine and by alternative physicians
in Europe.9 Laminaria seaweeds are a
popular dietary inclusion in Japan and
Korea. These species are rich in iodine,
trace elements, polysaccharides (fucoidan)
and antioxidants with the structure of
fucoxanthin.9
Sargassum species have been used as
stimulants for plant growth in liquid plant
foods and as a traditional Chinese remedy
to deal with excessive mucus production in the body.9 Sargassum muticum
originates most often from Japan and
can grow to a length of several meters.9
This seaweed contains fucoidans and
fucoxanthin-like antioxidants. It serves as
an important source of alginates, which
have widespread use in the pharmaceuti-
cal industry.9
Undaria pinnatifida (Wakame) is a large
brown algae and it is related to the Laminaria types of seaweed.9 In common with
other types of brown algae, it contains
trace elements and antioxidants including fucoxanthin. Undaria species are rich
sources of minerals and trace elements
and they contain “glucans” (fucoid-like
molecules) that may stimulate immunity.9
This group of seaweeds is rich in calcium,
niacin and vitamin C.9
Fucoxanthins
Fucoxanthins “crop up” in the scientific literature in several contexts.9 These
compounds are strong antioxidants,
related to well-known nutraceuticals such
as canthaxanthins, astaxanthins, lycopene,
violaxanthin and neoxanthin.9 The potent
and versatile antioxidant actions of carotenoids are implicated in cancer protection, immune function and anti-aging.9
The anti-aging benefits of seaweed have
been “touted” for years.9
Japanese researchers have shown that
the fucoxanthin components of Undaria (Wakame) may cause up to a 10%
weight loss in experimental animals by
direct effects on shrinking abdominal fat
stores.11-13 Fucoxanthin appears to stimulate proteins (Uncoupling protein-1) that
cause the oxidation of fat and its conversion to energy or heat (thermogenesis).13
Uncoupling protein-1 (UCP-1) appears to
be present in white adipose tissue (belly
fat) and acts on mitochondria in a direct
manner that promotes the oxidation of
free fatty acids, thereby reducing fat tissue
stores.13 The preponderance of white fat
in abdominal fat stores leads to the inference that this upregulating activity
of UCP-1 may be valuable in reducing the
size of a “pot belly.”11-13 Pot bellies are a
hallmark physical sign of insulin resistance
and Syndrome X.
Uncoupling protein-1 is expressed in
brown adipose tissue and plays a major
role in whole-body energy expenditure.
Dysfunction of this regulatory mechanism
promotes obesity. Fucoxanthin exerts its
effects through protein gene expression
in UCP-1 in white adipose tissue, but not
brown adipose tissue (Table 2). Animal experiments show that feeding concentrates

Table 2. Fucoxanthin is absorbed and converted into fucoxanthinol, which is further metabolized to amarouciaxanthin A and fucoxanthinol.
The end results are antioxidant effects, increased synthesis of DHA in the liver, UCP-1 upregulation in white adipose tissue and glucose-regulating effects in muscle tissue. These combined metabolic effects of fucoxanthin have implications for the management of Syndrome X, and
it appears that anti-inflammatory actions are present, as a predictable consequence of powerful antioxidant effects that have value in “obesitis”

of fucoxanthin results in significant weight
reduction in rodents.11-13
When rodents are fed fucoxanthin,
the expression of messenger RNA that
controls UCP-1 was found to be amplified
in amount in white adipose tissue, but
much lower expression of this mRNA was
found in mice who did not receive fucoxanthin.11-13 Fucoxanthin has been found
to reduce blood glucose in animals with
diabetes and in normal mice that are fed
high-fat diets (Table 2). It appears that
fucoxanthin is capable of upregulating
glucose transporter 4 mRNA expression
of L-6 myotubes,11-13 which are responsible for glucose transport in adult muscle
tissue (Table 2). An interesting additional
metabolic benefit of fucoxanthin administration in rodents is the promotion of the
synthesis of docosahexanoic acid (DHA)
in the liver.11-13 The versatile effects of
fucoxanthin on intermediary metabolism
make this carotenoid of great potential
value in the prevention or management of
metabolic syndrome X (Table 2).
The animal experiments with fucoxanthin stimulated researchers to recommend

human clinical trials with fucoxanthin.
Studies in Russia and the U.S. (not fully
reported in the literature), seem to show
notable thermogenic effects of seaweed
antioxidants (fucoxanthin) in humans.14
In placebo-controlled trials, a supplement
containing a 5% fucoxanthin concentrate
(daily dosage: 10 mg), combined with
calorie restriction to 1,800 calories per
day, resulted in an average of 14.5 lbs lost
over a 16-week period. In the placebo
group in this study, individuals lost an
average of 3 lbs in body weight (almost a
fivefold difference).14
In a second clinical experience using the
same supplement formulation, increases
in measurements of metabolic rate were
recorded, without evidence of significant
central nervous system stimulation (average 18% increase in metabolic rate).14 In
open-label observations of a different formula containing fucoxanthin (10% extract)
enhanced with green tea and chromium,
similar weight-loss results were obtained.15
These weight-loss outcomes15 were similar
to those experienced with the previously
mentioned formulation.14
weIghT coNTrol
While one can accept the beneficial
effects of seaweed ingredients on body
metabolism in the overweight individual,
the thermogenic effects of fucoxanthin11-14
are best complemented by other natural substances that can provide valuable
metabolic enhancement.15 Thermogenesis
induced by fucoxanthin can be complemented by metabolic promoters such as
chromium, green tea polyphenols, chlorogenic acid and hydroxycitrate (Garcinia
cambogia).16,17 The limitation of the use of
single dietary supplements for weight control has become increasingly apparent in
recent times, especially given the complex
pathophysiology of obesity.17,18
Chromium has several advantages
for weight control supplements, largely
because of its insulin sensitizing effects
and ability to promote healthy blood
cholesterol.16-18 Green tea polyphenols
exert anti-inflammatory actions and alter
glucose metabolism in a favorable
manner.16-19 In a similar manner,
continued on next page
SUMMER 2008

chlorogenic acid and other “coffee polyphenols” may favorably alter lipid and
sugar metabolism and afford protection
against the development of type II diabetes mellitus.16-18 Hydroxycitric acid (Garcinia cambogia) may inhibit fat storage by
promoting sugar storage as glycogen and
may suppress appetite, thereby decreasing body weight.17 This supplement has
enjoyed great individual popularity for
many years, but its stand-alone use may
be limited in benefits.
The use of other metabolic enhancers
combined with fucoxanthin has implications for the management of metabolic
syndrome X.11-13 This disorder affects up to
70 million Americans with its variable constellation of overweight status, abnormal
blood cholesterol and/or triglycerides and
hypertension, linked by resistance to the
hormone insulin.16,18,20 The amplification of
the actions of fucoxanthin-containing seaweeds is a synergistic approach to dietary
supplement formulation with more potent
and versatile effects on weight control.21
This modern nutraceutical technology
introduces the concept of a clinical fucose
or fucoxanthin complex formula.
There is no “perfect” or ideal weight
and certainly there is no “perfect diet.”
Weight control is a function of behavior
modification, calorie-controlled diet, exercise and adjunctive care, along with the
judicious use of dietary supplements (or
drugs). Diet alone cannot be relied upon
for sustained weight control and there is
not a dietary approach described in the
history of medicine that ensures longterm weight control.16,17 The “low carb”
dietary approach (popularized by Atkins
and copied by others) is effective in the
short term and I recommend it for its
provision of early weight loss. This initial
weight loss serves as a positive stimulus
for compliance with complex regimens
that are required for sustained weight
balance.17-20
It is clear that the restriction of simple
sugars in the diet is quite safe and it
makes eminent sense for use in mature
individuals who often have insulin resistance as part of the complex of syndrome
X.18,20 However, it must be recognized
that carbohydrate restriction alone has
not been shown to overcome insulin resistance in a consistent manner.17,18,21 This
SUMMER 2008 is a principal reason why an Atkins-like
diet is doomed to failure in the intermediate- to long-term control of body weight. It
is about time dietary fads were avoided in
the professional management of obesity.17
Managing obesity-related disease and the
litany of disorders associated with metabolic syndrome X (Syndrome X, Y and
Z…) are mandatory interventions.16, 18 I fail
to understand why both conventional and
alternative medicine have failed to recognize the global importance of managing
Syndrome X! While 70 million people in
the U.S. have syndrome X, this diagnosis is
missing from many patient charts.17,20
The role of body cleansing or detoxification seems to have emerged in clinical
practice with the increasing recognition of
the role of body toxicity in weight gain.22
Obesity (obesitis) and syndrome X are
associated with a “pro-inflammatory body
status” (obesitis).16 This makes eicosapentanoic acid (EPA in enteric-coated fish
oil supplements) an important adjunctive
weight loss supplements.18,20 EPA is both
anti-inflammatory and sensitizes the action
of insulin by effects on PPAR receptor complexes.18 Seaweeds may contain variable
amounts of marine omega-3 fatty acids.9 An
interesting amplification of the weight-loss
effects of fucose complexes may occur with
the use of nonstimulant appetite-suppressant supplements, such as Hoodia gordonii
or Caralluma fimbriata.23, 24 Of course,
combating overweight status, metabolic
syndrome X and prediabetes are pivotal in
the prevention of type II diabetes.16,18
Conclusion
Overweight individuals and their
caregivers have become desperate when
fat storage in the body is recalcitrant. This
circumstance precipitates a willingness to
look for “easy ways out” and “quick fixes.”
Desperate individuals may tend to accept
“hyperbolic claims” of the effects of drugs
or supplements. There is no quick fix for
the nation’s obesity. While diets are not
“stand-alone” interventions for weight
control, nor are drugs or dietary supplements, the examination of groups of individuals who have controlled their weight
over extended periods of time shows that
such individuals have taken a multipronged approach to weight control.17,18
Weight management is a holistic medical
venture.16,25 u
