Details: The Free Summer Playground
Program has been a favorite of Tyler
Children for generations. Established in
the 1950’s, it has provided educational
and quality of life enhancement to
thousands of participants. This year
many new and exciting activities have
been planned. There will be guest
presenters and instructors along with
organized group activities like: athletics,
free play, active and passive games. Arts
and crafts are also offered. The park sites
also participate in the Federal Free Lunch
Program.

is beginning its 22nd year. Free tennis

beginner, intermediate or advanced class.

IDEA GARDENING SERIES
The IDEA Gardening Series is an
informative lecture series covering
gardening topics suitable for a particular
month. The lectures are held on the patio
in the IDEA garden, which is located
in the southeast corner of Tyler’s Rose
Garden starting at noon. There is limited
seating. You may want to bring a lawn
chair for your comfort. The lecture will
run for about 30 minutes, followed by a
question and answer session. The dates
for the fall are as follows:
Sept. 2: Herbs for Fall/winter;
Oct. 7: Not Your Usual Fall Annuals;
Nov. 4: Lawn Prep for Winter.

This two-day arts and crafts fair features
shopping in air-conditioned booths filled
with delightful gifts for everyone on your
list. Fill your stockings or decorate your
home with themed crafts, primitives,
wood items, ceramics, jewelry, stained
glass, clothing, art mixed media and
much more. Holiday music will play
throughout the day and a visitor from the
North Pole will be stopping by both days
to get you in the spirit.

for the Parks Department programing
will be accepted. Tickets will also be sold
for great prizes benefiting Parks “free”

Details: The park is an all-concrete skate
park that provides challenges for all skill
levels and ages of skate boarder. The
park includes: two bowls, banks, ramps,
and rails. This is likely the best free-touse park within 200 miles of Tyler and
is drawing skaters from all over the
country. The park is open daily from 6
a.m. to midnight. Helmets and pads are music performances and the magic finger

Whether you are looking to get fit or just
have fun, the Glass Recreation Center is
the place to be. This multi-use facility
includes a weight room, gymnasium with
basketball/volleyball courts, an elevated
walking/jogging track, locker rooms,
arts and crafts room, computer lab and
kitchen facilities. Multipurpose rooms
are available for rental for parties and
business meetings. Wi-Fi now available.
The weight room is open to those
16 and older and features treadmills,
recumbent bike, elliptical glider, free
weights, squat rack and squat bench,
and other weight-lifting equipment.
Tyler Parks and Recreation basketball
and volleyball leagues play at the Glass
Recreation Center. Group fitness classes
are also offered throughout the year.
Membership to the Glass Recreation
Center is $30 per year for adults and
$10 a year for children. $50 per year for

The Goodman-LeGrand Museum was
the first property in Smith County to
be listed on the National Register of
Historic Places. It has been a Texas
Historic Landmark since 1964.
The home was built in 1859 on the
highest point of a nine acre tract of land.
It was originally a one-story, four-room
house for Samuel Gallatin Smith. When
the Civil War broke out in 1861, he sold
the house to the Franklin N. Gary family.
After the war, in 1866, Dr. Samuel
Adams Goodman purchased the house.
His son, Dr. William Jeffries Goodman,
a local doctor and Civil War surgeon,
bought the house from his father and
moved in with his new bride, Mary
Priscilla Gaston Goodman, in 1867. The
Goodman family made the house their
home for 72 years and four generations.
Dr. Goodman’s oldest daughter, Sallie,
married James H. LeGrand in 1893,
and he moved into her family home at
that time. Sallie inherited the house in
1921, and upon her death in 1939, she
bequeathed the estate to the City of Tyler
to be open as a museum. Much of what
we know about the home and its past
residents come from the diaries kept by
Sallie. The diaries recount tales about
guests who stayed at the house, and
they describe elegant social parties and
receptions held for politicians.
Historical
records
show
that
the Goodman-LeGrand House has
undergone a number of renovations. The
second story was added around 1880. In
1926, the house was transformed from
a Texas Colonial/Italianate architectural
style to a Classic/Greek Revival style
with projecting circular porticos and
two-story columns. The last major
restoration took place in 2010-2011.
Furnished with the original belongings
of the Goodman and LeGrand families,
the Goodman-LeGrand Museum offers
visitors a chance to view such items
as antique hand carved furniture, a
grandfather clock from the colonial era,
fine silver and hand painted Limoges
china, vintage clothing, medical
reference books that date back to the late
1700’s, surgical tools from the Civil War,
original paintings and photographs, and
many other rare and interesting items on
display. The home is a delight for antique
lovers and history buffs alike!
Improvements to The GoodmanLeGrand Museum Grounds: The Tyler
Parks and Recreation Department, in
partnership with Keep Tyler Beautiful,
are planning many improvements to the
nine-acre LeGrand Park and Gardens
that surround the Goodman-LeGrand
Museum. Brand new in March 2009, is
the Chamblee Rose Garden, which is
the world’s first certified Earth-kind™
garden. The master plan for other
improvements will include replanting
the historic gardens with rose bushes,
walking paths and camellias for which
Sallie Goodman LeGrand was well
known. It also includes restoring the
old greenhouse, planning for bird and
butterfly gardens, and rebuilding replicas
of historic outbuildings.
Hours of Operation: The museum is
open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through
Saturday. Admission is free. However,
we suggest a minimum donation of $2
per person. For tour groups of 10 or
more people, a minimum $2 donation
per person shall be requested. Also,
tour groups should schedule their tour
date and time in advance. The museum
may be rented for meetings and bridal
portraits or other photo shoots. The
LeGrand Park is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
daily. Also, the park and gardens may be
rented for special events.

HONOR THE MEMORIES
Rose Hill Mausoleum offers beautiful resting places to honor those who
have passed away. Located at 2400
S. Donnybrook Avenue, adjacent to
South Broadway Avenue, the Rose Hill
Mausoleum stands as an architectural
masterpiece. The Mausoleum is constructed of Italian granite and sits atop
a gentle rolling hill that complements

and blends with the overall design.
When entering the mausoleum, you
are met with a calm sense of beauty
and serenity. The main entrance opens
to an air-conditioned Chapel with
granite faced crypts on both sides.
After passing through the glass doors
on the rear wall, visitors encounter the
Atrium Court where a large skylight
illuminates four benches surrounding the Tree of Life. This area offers a
quiet place to meditate and reflect. The
west wall of the Atrium Court features
a computerized directory which allows
visitors to locate the burial place of any
individual in Rose Hill Cemetery or
Mausoleum.

care trust fund, which provides for the

Rose Hill Cemetery and Mausoleum

The City also maintains Historic
Oakwood Cemetery, located at the
corner of Palace Ave. at Oakwood St.,
consists of 8.58 acres and has more
than 2,000 inscribed monuments. The
cemetery is the burial place of Tyler’s
early settlers and merchants. There are
231 graves of unknown Confederate
Soldiers, plus more than 70 marked
Confederate graves. The cemetery has
one or two burials each year and has
limited availability.
Westview is the city’s other
cemetery. Westview Cemetery, 3200
W. Erwin St., consists of five acres.
Several years ago fire destroyed all of
the burial records as well as ownership
documents. The City of Tyler requires
valid proof of ownership prior to all
burials.

Take a look at all the Tyler Parks and Recreation Department can offer
you and your family this summer and fall! From tennis to riding on the
award winning bike trails, to swimming in an Olympic size pool, plus so
much more, all on a very family friendly budget! Even indoor activities
like cooking classes, Zumba and beginner belly dancing classes. Also,
take advantage of the summer playground program for youth at three
park sites and our 10 week summer youth camp at the Glass Recreation
Center.
