Who Needs A Parade?
Everybody Loves a Street Fair!
What makes a street fair so much fun?
Is it the food trucks and offerings from local restaurants,
specialty food stores, and local craft beer breweries?
Is it the “Kids Zone” sponsored by North Shore Medical Center and featuring
Barry University’s Athletic Village, art and science games, rock climbing, bounce
houses, and rides?
Is it the rockin’ live music stage sponsored by Unite Miami Shores? Or it the bountiful
farmer’s market presented by the Urban Oasis Project? Maybe it’s the garden and
landscape design vendors or the green living and home improvement solutions?
Could it be the Electric Avenue showcasing the latest in hybrid and energy efficient
vehicles from scooters to smart cars? Or maybe the artisan village brimming with hand
crafted art, fair-trade items, custom jewelry, beauty products, and clothing? Or maybe
its Miami Shores Presbyterian Church School’s pop-up bookstore?
Maybe it’s the thrill of learning from the environmental groups and garden nurseries
who will be offering education on composting and rain barrels and advice to kick off
South Florida’s growing season?
There is something incredibly liberating and special about walking down the middle of
a street usually filled with car traffic without fear of ending up on the bad end of a game
of Frogger. Add food, beverages, music, games, shopping, and hanging out with your
friends—now you have a party!
Thanks to the “green” financial support of North Shore Medical Center, Unite Miami
Shores, Village of Miami Shores, and our zone sponsors, the
Chamber expects this year’s event to be epic!

Celebrating Barry’s History
and Contributions
Barry University recently began a yearlong
celebration of its 75th Anniversary. Originally
founded as an all-women’s college in 1940, Barry
officially changed its name to Barry University
in 1981. Today, the school comprises two
campuses, Miami Shores and Orlando, and 13
satellite sites across Florida, e Bahamas, and
the U.S. Virgin Islands – inspiring students to
foster positive change within the local and
global community.
Barry students gain hands-on experience
before graduation, with local and international
organizations no matter which field they study.
Barry’s use of service-learning, which integrates
coursework with community needs, engages
students with contemporary issues and
encourages them to help find solutions.
Among its more than 60,000 alumni who make
an impact in South Florida and abroad are:
Alberto Carvalho ’90, Superintendent for
Miami-Dade County Public Schools; Allyson
Maynard-Gibson ’75, Attorney General of the
Commonwealth of e Bahamas; Carlos
Gimenez ’99, Miami-Dade County Mayor;
and Laurent Lamothe ’95, Former Prime

Downtown
Improvement
of the Month
I’m75
Each month we will feature a downtown
Miami Shores business that is investing
money to spruce up their façade,
windows, or other exterior fixtures. Tell
them you saw what they did to improve
our downtown and that you appreciate it!
Congratulations to Dr. Laura FernandezOrtiz and Shores Pediatrics at 9715 NE
2nd Avenue who recently installed these
beautiful new awnings on their building!
& I’m on a mission.
Since 1940 it’s been our mission to provide every Barry student
with the kind of transformational education that enables them
to become thoughtful and caring leaders who make our world a
better place. Greatness begins in the vibrant classrooms of our
120-acre Miami campus, extends to our championships
in athletics, reaches deep into the community organizations
and businesses whose mission and goals are furthered by the
contributions of our students and graduates, and lasts a lifetime.

Transforming NE2 in to a Field of Fun!
Each year the Greater Miami Shores
Chamber of Commerce stages Green
Day, which brings together all of the
things that our community residents
like best: a kid and pet friendly
environment, live music, food trucks,
beer and wine, and a chance to stroll the
Avenue without cars and see neighbors
and friends. And the “green” theme also
resonates with our community.
Miami Shores and its neighboring
communities have among the highest
levels of recycling participation,
Florida Friendly landscaping, and a
true commitment to green issues in
South Florida.
Our neighbors take this stuff seriously,
and that’s a big reason why the event
draws nearly 5,000 people in just four
hours. This year’s event promises lots of
kid activities and surprises as well, from
the return of the Walking Trees to the
video screens showing live, random acts
of resident’s goofiness!

Recycle, Reuse and Reduce.
The Chamber’s Greener Living committee is a
year-round educational resource to improve the
health and well-being of our community’s
yards, environment, families, and pets.
Just like last year, you can ride your
bike to the event, park it at the DCS
sponsored bike valet, stroll through a
plant sale, buy some fresh local produce
at the farmer’s market, and get tips
on green home improvements, rain
barrels, solar cookers, and composting.
And virtually every local civic group,
school, and church will be there,
explaining what they do and often
times incorporating a green message or
activity (one school is running a used
book sale!).
So come on out and enjoy yourself.
Peruse almost 150 vendors, share
a laugh, a beverage, and even learn
something in the process! And bring
your own water bottle. There will be
water stations available where you can
fill them up, so we don’t add more
disposable plastic water bottles to our
oceans. Gotta be green for Green Day!

Mayor’s MESSAGE | ALICE BURCH
Families of all types and sizes—that’s what we are about in
Miami Shores. This fall, whether your baby has four legs or
wants to ride on two wheels, we have much to offer. Safe and Slow in the Shores! That’s the message we are getting from
residents concerned about speeding in our neighborhoods. We know
you are busy and have little time, but please be mindful with your driving, put the phone
down, keep your eyes on the road and speed limits, and ‘drive like your kids live here’.
Walk to School Day is October 7th, ask your school if they are participating! Halloween
will be celebrated on October 31st. Please to keep a look out for those trick-or-treaters
darting across the road.
Dogs in the Pool at the Aquatic Center on October 3rd! Small dogs can swim from 11 a.m.
until 12:30 p.m.; at 1 p.m. the large dogs can jump in! Call 305-795-2241 to pre-register.
Seniors, your next day trip transports you to the Perez Art Museum on October 17th;
register by October 5th.
Want to do more for the Shores? There are 26 vacancies on Village Boards; which one is
for you? Call the Village Clerk, Barbara Estep, 305-762-4851, and apply by October 13th.
November if full of opportunities to have fun while supporting worthwhile causes—
all right here in the Shores. November 1: The Recreation Department’s 5K Run starts at
the Community Center at 7:30 a.m. After you burn all of those calories, reward yourself
and your children to the Good Neighbors Benefit Brunch at the Country Club from 11
a.m.-2 p.m. Kids get to watch their favorite films while parents can relax and enjoy good
conversations with your neighbors! Cost is only $35.22/age 10 & under $17.58 and will
raise funds for good Village causes. The second annual Unity Ball is November 7th and will
also benefit Shores causes. I am so proud of the philanthropy of Miami Shores residents!

Mayor’s MESSAGE | Claudia V. Cubillos
I hope everyone had a great summer! This is the time of year that
children go back to school and safety should be a top priority.
Please let’s all respect the speed limit signs and drive as if your
child was playing on the street.
In order to ensure El Portal children were properly prepared
for the upcoming school year, we hosted a “Back to School”
backpack giveaway on Wednesday August 19th at the Village
Hall. I would like to thank Waste Management for their generosity in donating over
80 backpacks, which included composition notebooks, pencils and other supplies.
I would also like to thank the El Portal Police Department for their time to assist
in handing out the backpacks and providing tips to children and parents regarding
school safety.
On July 29th El Portal hosted a Three Villages Social, which included residents and
business leaders from El Portal, Miami Shores, and Biscayne Park. The social was
held in cooperation with the Greater Miami Shores Chamber of Commerce and its
new Three Villages Committee. Thanks to the generous sponsors who made this
event possible, including: Realtor Nancy Dawson and The Alexander Hotel.
Lastly, I am happy and excited to report that our El Portal Nature Trail Community
Park Expansion Project was selected by the Miami Foundation as one of 18 winners
of the 2015 Public Space Challenge. This Challenge is part of a growing ecosystem of
platforms and advocates pushing for greater investment in Miami-Dade County parks
and local gathering places. Parks and all public spaces are critical to the quality of life
for everyone and I am proud that this project is helping move El Portal forward.

? Miami Shores History Corner
Each month, we feature a question or a
photograph from our Archives. The Miami
Shores Country Club donates a $25 gift
certificate to a randomly drawn person
supplying the correct response. The winner
is drawn on the 15th of the month.
Last month we asked if anyone knew the street
pictured above in a photograph lent to us
from the personal collection of Miami Shores
resident Seth Bramson, and in what direction
we are looking. Yes, it was 96th Street looking
east. The shot is from 1926! Our randomly
drawn winner is Jairo Ribero of El Portal.
No question this month, just a wonderful
story about Biscayne Park, supplied by a
reader. Enjoy!
In the 1920’s, Arthur Mertlow Griffing had
acquired and begun developing land along
Dixie Highway north of Miami. The nursery
was sold and the land subdivided and named
Griffing Biscayne Park Estates. Mr. Griffing
continued his love of landscaping by carefully
planting the area with shrubs and trees so
that Biscayne Park Estates resembled a huge
botanical garden. Early in January 1923,
Mr. Griffing began advertising in the Miami
Daily Metropolis and set up a miniature of
the Park. Prospective buyers were shuttled
from downtown Miami to the new “Gateway
to Miami”. Mr. Griffing combined his land
sales with his nursery promotions by offering
a free strawberry shortcake to potential
buyers, particularly young families, to live
in his new development. In addition he
produced safe environments for children to
play near their homes by creating many culde-sacs. The well-landscaped streets, medians
and park areas laid out by Mr. Griffing set
the stage for the first homes erected in the
development which cost between $4,000 and
$4,500. The shortcake incentive was later

upgraded to a mixed box of grapefruits and
oranges.
By a vote of its 113 citizens, the Town
of Biscayne Park was incorporated on
December 31, 1931, and on June 16th, 1933,
a state charter was granted changing the
name to the Village of Biscayne Park. The
Works Progress Administration built a log
cabin, a clear and distinct reference to the
Depression as well as to the simplicity of the
American frontier days. On February 1, 1933,
at the height of the Depression, the Federal
Emergency Relief Program provided the
labor for the Dade County pine construction.
William Green, a resident of the Park, as
well as a Councilperson, was a regional
administrator for the Federal program and
was certainly instrumental in the creation of
the Park’s singular and distinctive building.

The actual expenses incurred were a grand
total of $247, met by individual donations of
$5 to $20 and gifts from the Card Club that
ranged from $10 to $22. In light of today’s
multiple million dollar projects, these modest
sums seem very quaint, but when held in
light of the circumstances in which they
occurred during the national depression, they
reflect generous and caring residents and a
community that was conscientious of their
town. At a special ceremony on January 24th,
1935, the finished Log Cabin was officially
turned over to the Village, and to this day has
been the center for the daily operations of
the Park. Since its creation in the thirties, it
has been the prized symbol of the Village of
Biscayne Park.
