WELCOME
Welcome to Caterham School Rugby. This booklet aims to
answer any questions that you may have about your son’s
participation in rugby, the organisation of the sport in the
school, our expectations of the boys and what you can expect
from us.
We are very fortunate to have such a dedicated team of
coaches here at Caterham and we have high ambitions for
the sport at school but also for your son’s as individuals. We
feel passionately that every pupil has a great deal to gain by
being actively involved in rugby union, as it teaches important
lessons and provides treasured memories that will last a
lifetime.
Thank you for taking the time to read this booklet. I look
forward to meeting you in person soon. If there is anything
you would like to discuss regarding rugby at Caterham or
your son’s progress, please do not hesitate to contact me
personally.

CORE VALUES
There are many reasons to become involved in competitive
sport and here at Caterham we firmly believe that the most
important lessons are the ones that extend beyond the
pitch and will permeate the pupils’ day-to-day lives. Rugby
has something special to offer each pupil at Caterham
School. As a team of teachers and coaches, we aim to instil
the following core values of rugby in all players:
Discipline – Strong discipline underpins our sport. At
Caterham, as across the rugby community, we have a
deep respect and understanding for the laws of the game,
realising that they are there to enable an exciting game
between both sides.
Respect - Mutual respect forms the basis of our sport.
We hold the values and traditions of our sport in high
esteem and we aim to earn the respect of others in the
way we behave. We respect match officials and accept all
decisions unquestioningly. We respect opposition players
and supporters and always conduct ourselves in a manner
befitting ambassadors of Caterham School.
Teamwork – Teamwork is essential to our sport. Working
as a team teaches us vital compromise, negotiation,
leadership and communication skills that enrich our lives.
We play for the team, not for ourselves alone, both on and
off the field. We take pride in our team, rely on each other
and understand that each player has a part to play.
Enjoyment – Enjoying ourselves is the reason we play
rugby. At Caterham we strive to play with a smile on our
faces, playing in a safe environment. We enjoy being part
of a team and the wider rugby family.
Sportsmanship – Sportsmanship is the foundation upon
which rugby is built. We uphold the tradition of camaraderie
with our teammates and opposition. We observe fair
play both on and off the pitch and always encourage
our teammates. We play to win but not at all costs and
recognise both endeavour and achievement. We aim to
develop as individuals and as a team in each session that
we undertake.

GAMES, FIXTURES AND TURN-OUTS
Games and Turn-Outs are vital for rugby progression.
Games is a formal lesson and should be treated as such,
with compulsory attendance and exemplary standards of
behaviour. Turn-Outs occur after school and are compulsory
for all those selected to attend; the same procedure applies to
fixtures. We have a proud history at Caterham and compete
with some very large schools who require a depth of fixtures
so it is important that all boys are ready and willing to
represent the school on Saturdays.
It is our experience that boys are generally very keen to
represent the school on a Saturday as there is a great deal
of prestige associated with representing Caterham at rugby.
On the odd occasion, an absence from rugby may be needed
or requested. It is important that the boys follow the correct
school procedure for this and ask permission and do not
simply not show up.
It is fairly common for parents to want to take boys home after
an away fixture rather than following the bus back to school.
Whilst it is compulsory for all boys to attend teas at both home
and away fixtures, leaving with parents after this should not
be a problem at all; however, please check with your son’s
coach.

SELECTION
Our policy at school will aim to be as simple, transparent
and fair as possible. For ‘A’ teams, selection will be purely
meritocratic with whoever the coach judges to be the best
candidate for the shirt being selected. We play on a tough
circuit and need to ensure we are as strong as we can be.
However, this does not mean that supposedly ‘stronger’
players will be able to miss sessions and still be selected.
If a player misses a session without gaining permission or
providing an acceptable reason the following morning (by
going to find his coach and explaining first thing, not waiting
to be found) then he should expect to be dropped to the
bench or removed from the squad altogether.
We also aim to have an inclusive approach that allows
as many boys as possible to represent the school on
the rugby pitch. This will not necessarily mean a ‘squad
rotation’ system at B team level and below but it is a
strong commitment to ensuring that all boys are given
opportunities over the course of the season.
Team sheets will be posted on the appropriate year group
notice board by no later than the end of break on the day
before a game. We will endeavour to get teams up as early
as possible. It is the duty of the boys to check this sheet
regarding selection and timings. Team sheets will also be
available electronically via www.caterhamschoolsport.com.
Any queries regarding selection should be directed to the
applicable coach and Mr Richards in the first instance.

KIT
Boys must ensure that they are in appropriate Caterham
School kit for every session.
Throughout the season boys will require:
Caterham rugby shirt
Caterham rugby shorts
Caterham rugby socks
Rugby/football boots (ideally a pair of moulded and studded
if possible)
Caterham tracksuit
Gum shield
Optional extras include: Caterham training tee shirt,
Caterham hoody, Caterham waterproof/warm-up top, Head
Gear (scrum cap), shoulder pads, a water bottle, baselayer
(top/leggings) tops are permitted by the IRB for competitive
fixtures but leggings are not; these are acceptable for
training however.
I feel it is important that we build a strong squad spirit and
part of this is all looking the same in sessions and fixtures
so non-Caterham kit will not be allowed at any Games
session or turn-out. Boys may not wear replica or club kit;
this should be saved for the appropriate time. We only wear
Caterham kit to Caterham sessions.
At fixtures, all boys must arrive to school in full school
uniform; they will travel to fixtures in this. Players should
then change into exclusively Caterham kit for the warm-up
and match. Boys must then change back into full school
uniform after every fixture, regardless of whether it is home
or away or how they are getting home.

INJURIES, REHABILITATION, CONDITIONING
AND NUTRITION
Injuries are likely to occur throughout the season. When
this happens it is important to get a sound diagnosis as
quickly as possible. We are extremely fortunate to have
extensive medical cover at all home matches. Our health
centre staff are superb and experienced in dealing with
sports injuries. As well as this all sports staff will be able to
help parents make treatment choices if it is needed.
Head injuries will be taken extremely seriously and players
must be honest with coaches and staff about their state
regarding such knocks. We will adhere strictly to the IRB’s
Graduated Return to Play Protocol (GRPP) for all those
who suffer a serious head injury.
As boys move through the school they will be able to
gain expert advice from fully accredited strength and
conditioning coaches to help them be in the best shape
they can be in to play.
Nutritionally, boys should aim to eat a healthy, balanced
diet and stay well hydrated. However, it is also very
important that boys enjoy their food and allow themselves
‘treats.’
This is a very brief summary of some nutritional and
conditioning demands of the sport. If you have any
questions or would like to know more please do not hesitate
to contact me on [email protected]

DIRECTIONS
Directions and maps for all of our fixtures can be found
on our schools sports website. If you navigate to the link
below, you will find our home page.
www.caterhamschoolsport.com
On the left hand side of the page you will see a tab entitled
‘Opponent Maps & Links’ which will provide all the details
you will need to find schools.
Directions for Old Cats
We are very fortunate to have some of the best kept
grounds and pitches in the South East at school. However
due the large number of teams we put out, some games
need to be played up at Old Cats. These pitches are also
phenomenonally well maintained by our Grounds staff at
school. Directions for Old Cats can be found here:
