Stavanger
Kristiansand
Learn about the ‘Shetland Bus’ which assisted
the Norwegian Resistance and also the
Telemark raids during the Second World War,
and enjoy live music recalling the tunes of that
era. You’ll also gain an insight into modern-day
operations during a fascinating talk from the
former head of MI5, Dame Stella Rimington.
Sep 1. Dover, England. Depart 1600.
Sep 3. Lerwick h, Shetland Islands. Arrive 0900.
Depart 1800. Visit the remote town of Lerwick, which
has a vibrant fishing community and lanes lined with
Victorian buildings. Optional excursions will reveal the
role of these islands in the Second World War, such as
the Shetland Bus, which ferried commandos to assist
the Norwegian resistance. You’ll follow in the wake of the
Shetland Bus as Saga Sapphire continues to Norway.
Sep 4. Bergen, Norway. Arrive 0900. Depart 1800.
Bergen is famed for its pretty waterfront of
pastel-coloured buildings and its mountainous backdrop.
Perhaps seek out the UNESCO-protected wharf or
head to the hills on the Mount Fløyen Funicular on an
optional excursion.
Sep 5. Stavanger, Norway. Arrive 0800.
Depart 1800. Explore Stavanger’s quaint old quarter of
cobbled streets and discover Norway’s oldest cathedral,
Bergen
Dover

an Anglo-Saxon edifice that was built in the 12th century,
probably by British craftsmen! In contrast, the
cosmopolitan centre is packed with world-class
restaurants, stylish shops and museums. Alternatively,
learn about the occupation of Stavanger on an optional
excursion that takes you back to the early days of the
Second World War.
Sep 6. Kristiansand, Norway. Arrive 0900.
Depart 1800. A prosperous city in southern Norway,
Kristiansand was founded in 1641 by King Christian IV.
Perhaps join a guided walking tour of its grid-like centre
– the Quadrature – where you’ll find the old town of
pretty terraced wooden houses and an imposing
fortress. Maybe tour the cells of a former Gestapo
regional headquarters which have been preserved by
the Arkivet Foundation, or see one of the world’s largest
land-based cannons, which weighs 337 tonnes!
