MD Helicopters at a glance:
MD Helicopters, Inc. is an American aerospace manufacturer that
produces helicopters primarily for commercial use. The company
began in 1947 as a unit of Hughes Aircraft, then part of the
Hughes Tool Company. Hughes Helicopters produced three
major designs during its 37-year history. The Model 269/300 was
Hughes' first successful helicopter design. Built in 1956 it would
eventually become part of the Army inventory as a primary
trainer, designated TH-55 Osage. In May 1965, the company won
the contract for a new observation helicopter for the U.S. Army,
and produced the OH-6 Cayuse (Hughes Model 369). The OH-6
was later developed into the civilian Model 500, variants of which
remain in production to this day. (In 1975, the company won the
contract for the AH-64 Apache attack helicopter). In 1983, the
company licensed Schweizer Aircraft to produce the Model 300C,
which Schweizer continues to produce today. The company was
sold to McDonnell-Douglas in 1984. In1997, McDonnell Douglas
merged with Boeing who decided to sell its civilian line of
helicopters to MD Helicopter Holdings Inc., an indirect subsidiary
of the Dutch company, RDM Holding Inc. In 1999. This line
included the MD 500 and variants as well as the family of
derivative NOTAR. After suffering dismal commercial
performance, the company was purchased in 2005 by Patriarch
Partners, LLC, an US investment fund. Recapitalized as an
independent company, MD Helicopters, Inc., is now based in
Mesa, Arizona.
NOTAR is the name of a helicopter system which avoids the use
of a tail rotor. Developed by McDonnell Douglas Helicopter
Systems (through their acquisition of Hughes Helicopters), the
name is an acronym derived from the phrase no tail rotor. The
system uses a fan inside the
tailboom to build a high volume
of low-pressure air, which exits
through two slots and creates a
boundary layer flow of air along
the tailboom utilizing the
Coandă effect. The boundary
layer changes the direction of
airflow around the tailboom,
creating thrust opposite the
motion imparted to the fuselage by the torque effect of the
main rotor. Directional yaw control is gained through a vented,
rotating drum at the end of the tailboom, called the direct jet
thruster. Advocates of NOTAR believe the system offers quieter
and safer operation.
MD Helicopters current product line includes the MD 500E, MD
530F, MD 520N, MD 600N and the MD Explore. More than
2’500 MD Helicopters are now in use worldwide.
