UP
We’ve opened all our Christmas presents, we’ve welcomed
the New Year, but the Deuter celebration continues with a
firework of product news 2015/2016: first and foremost there
are the new lines of our toploader Rise and our top safety
ABS® pack OnTop. Both collections comprise three technical
models for different winter activities and, of course, feature
female specific SL packs. Further fireworks come with our
classics Guide Lite and Freerider, which line up in new bright
colours for the white bliss.
What’s your winter highlight? Christmas, of course. Having all
your family members merrily around you. And then there are
those special backcountry adventures. The Deuter team is no exception, we feel just the same. But we were also really ‘stoked’
when we read the test verdict in Germany’s number one mountain magazine ALPIN about our ABS-Twinbag pack OnTop 30 in
January 2015: it recevied the ‘best in test’ badge! And the review
included more or less every avalanche airbag model on the market. It feels good to feel proud. In the end it confirms all our efforts and all of our passion that we put into our products.
Yet, of course, pride can be a dangerous thing. It can tempt you
to rest on your laurels. But we are not built to standing still.
Promise! On the contrary: praise pushes us further, it’s the best
motivation. So in winter 2015/2016 our awarded OnTop 30 is
joined by two new backcountry experts. From the ultra light-

lighten
weight freeride and sidecountry model to the XXL traverse specialist, our OnTop Tour. All of our ABS-backpacks have one thing
in common: they offer safety that fits!
Another one that lightens the load on winter ascents is our popular Rise, which has grown into a range of packs for any kind of
snowsports action. Our toploader now comes in three different
models: one for day tours, the superbly equipped pro version for
extended or gear intense outings and the new specialist for multi-day ski tours and crossings. Of course, we cannot be a 100%
sure that the new Rise range will become a favourite with snowsports lovers, yet it sure brings all it takes – and a bit more.
Our new packs will be part of so many special outdoor adventures and moments of solitude in nature. No wonder we are eagerly supporting the new environmental initiative “Dein Freiraum.
Mein Lebensraum.” The campaign promotes responsible outdoor
behaviour and is launched in three areas in the Allgäu Alps – a
region close to our headquarters and therefore especially close to
our hearts. The target: creating a healthy, harmonious relationship between man and nature through education, information and
guidance. This winter, for example, 50 marked ski and 30 marked
snowshoe trails were introduced in the nature reserve Nagelfluhkette. We do strongly believe in environmental projects that help
protect the wilderness for us to recreate and for wildlife to thrive.
Now let’s enjoy a great and safe winter season with many days
to remember!

minimum extra weight. It follows the most varied
movements with absolute ease.
Alpine Back System
Body-hugging soft stripe pads follow even
rapid movements and keep the load close
to the body’s centre of gravity – essential
in difficult terrain. The channel between
the pads provides extra comfort by creating a “chimney” effect ventilation.

Compact hip fins
Removable, pivoting
Vari Flex hip fins
follow any movement, which saves energy and provides
great freedom of movement even in difficult passages.
The hip fins can be easily removed on the models Guide, Rise Pro, Rise Tour, and Freerider Pro. Advantages: weight reduction and better access to the climbing
harness. The backpack can thus be carried just with the
waist strap, which is also removable (on models Guide,
Rise Pro and Rise Tour).

ABS® avalancheairbag System
Deuter ALPINE BACK System
Highest survival rate
Pyrotechnic-pneumatic activation
Out of 262 persons with activated ABS® avalanche
airbag, 97 % survived, and 84 % were uninjured.
(Source: SLF, known and documented avalanche accidents with ABS® avalanche airbags, August 2010)
A quick pull with little force and the system inflates irreversibly at the speed of sound. Within a few moments, the ABS®
TwinBags inflate. Without compromise, quickly and with absolute certainty.
German engineering
See and flee
The original ABS® self-rescue system – developed,
manufactured and tested by avalanche experts
since 1985. Survival made in Germany.
The ABS® TwinBag system can be activated without hesitation at the first sign of an avalanche. Nothing hinders the
attempt to escape and nothing blocks the view or restricts
movement, but you are protected right from the start.
Double safety
Even if one of the two ABS® TwinBags is damaged,
there is usually sufficient remaining volume to prevent total burial.
Dynamic lift
The wide bearing surface due to laterally placed
ABS® TwinBags stabilizes the body and increases the
lift precisely in the critical avalanche runout zone.
Maximum visibility
In 97 % of all documented avalanche accidents with activated airbags, the TwinBags were visible on the surface. The
time-consuming, highly stressful and errorprone search in
difficult terrain is avoided.
Easy pack and use
Simple and safe to pack and quickly ready again for operation
– after recommended training activation or in an emergency.
The long proven and repeatedly
awarded back system combines
a compact, secure fit with maximum carrying comfort and comfortable ventilation.

“Very good pack plus very good system equals very good avalanche airbag
rucksack.” This is the OnTop verdict of Germany’s ALPIN magazine (01/15)
in their test of more or less all the airbag packs available on the market.
The ‘best in test’ award for our OnTop 30 further confirms our conviction to
“always stay on top”. The 28 and 30 l capacity models are classic packs for
day tours. We trust in the proven ABS® Twinbag system that inflates to a total volume of 170 l in mere seconds and we combine it with our legendary
Alpine Back system. Safety that fits – also on the women’s back with the
female specific SL model!

12 Dein Freiraum.
“Dein Freiraum. Mein Lebensraum” –
a campaign promoting responsible backcountry recreation.
Sharing the Outdoors.
“We are all free to enjoy the pleasures and solitude of nature, even of sensitive environments – as long as we behave
responsibly and always consider the impact of our actions on
the wildlife.”
More and more outdoor enthusiasts venture into the backcountry
in wintertime – whether they are alpine touring, snowshoeing or
hiking. Off the beaten tracks and groomed slopes, into the woods
and up the mountains. One of the most popular ‘playgrounds’ in
the German Alps is the Allgäu region, where a lot of people seek
and find recreation. But especially those higher, remote areas are
the natural habitat of many animals that are rare and highly sensitive to noise such as the black and snow grouse or the mountain
cock. We are the visitors, they are the permanent residents.
Can we both – visitor and resident – harmoniously share the outdoors? Yes we can! If we follow the credo “live and let live”, if we
are willing to respect boundaries and are aware of our role in nature and our impact on wildlife, then we will contribute to ensure
the survival of rare species. “We do not want to exclude man.
We rather see ourselves as part of nature,” says Rolf Eberhardt,
the CEO of the nature reserve Nagelfluhkette. “Our goal is to establish a good relationship between man and nature.” And this
mission is at the heart of a joint project in the Allgäu region from
which outdoor enthusiasts as well as wildlife will profit: “Dein
Freiraum. Mein Lebensraum”.
The campaign has now been launched in three pilot areas

many outdoorers as possible and thus encourage the protection
of threatened wild habitat.
and implemented by the German Alpine Association or “Respect
your Boundaries” developed by the neighbouring Austrian federal
state of Vorarlberg.
Within the nature reserve Nagelfluhkette about 50 environmentally friendly ski touring routes fulfil the criteria set up by the initiative. And there are now even 30 new marked snowshoe trails
that have been developed over the past months by experts of
the nature resort Nagelfluhkette and the German Alpine Association. All of those ski tours and snowshoe hikes are marked with
signs posted along the trails and can also be viewed on www.
freiraum-lebensraum.info
Besucherlenkung_OA_Praes_Lay.indd 48
The campaign “Dein Freiraum. Mein Lebensraum.” has a special,
collective approach that integrates all relevant stakeholders from
the beginning. It involves the district office, specialised biologists,
rangers, hunters, land owners, farmers, nature conversation organizations, representatives of the nature reserve, alpine schools,
tourist boards as well as of the German Alpine Association.
The campaign is built on three main pillars. First: education
through effective trail signs which provide information about the
wildlife, responsible behaviour and also show environmentally
friendly routes. Secondly: general information about the interrelations between man and nature and how different activities affect
the wildlife habitat. Third: wide spread media campaigns.
“Dein Freiraum. Mein Lebensraum.” is not an “autistic”, but rather a “holistic” umbrella campaign integrating established initiatives such as “Environmental Friendly Alpine Touring” created
But why is Deuter supporting the “Respect your Boundaries” initiative? There are many reasons! First of all the Allgäu region is
close to our headquarters and thus one of our own favourite ‘playgrounds’. But most of all we develop products that are out in nature every day and we therefore feel committed to encourage a
responsible use of the outdoors. For us here at Deuter it is a matter of heart to support the campaign “Dein Freiraum. Mein Lebensraum.” We strongly believe in environmental projects that help
protect the wilderness for us to recreate and for wildlife to thrive.

You just need to follow three
simple rules to help protect and
preserve wildlife in wintertime:
Stay on the trails and follow the signs! If you remain
on the designated tracks you are more predictable for the
animals and will not startle them.
Respect protected areas! Those are important retreats
and shelters for sensitive animal species. Winter is an
especially vulnerable time for animals. It gets cold and
food is scarce. Quiet territories help them to conserve
precious energy.
Avoid dusk and dawn! In wintertime many species are
particularly active during early morning hours or dusk when
they are searching for food. Thus, they are very vulnerable
to disturbance at these times.

32 FWF
Our goal: good working conditions worldwide!
We go our way…
Deuter backpacks, bags and sleeping bags are designed for
long-lasting outdoor pleasure. Yet consumer satisfaction is
only one of our corporate goals. We also feel responsible for
those who are manufacturing our products. We want them to
be paid fairly and have a good working environment. We want
to ensure safe and healthy occupational conditions – for all
manufacturing sites worldwide. This has been our goal for a
long time. Also because we know that it is the foundation of
our outstanding quality.
Since June 2014 both of our long-term production partners,
Vina Duke and Bellmart – and thus 100% of our production
volume – have been audited by the FWF.
Our way starts with our long-term, trustful relationships with just
a few, carefully selected production partners. Our partnerships
give us the chance to strongly influence the working conditions.
In Vietnam the company Duke has been manufacturing exclusively for Deuter since 1994. About 4000 people work for Duke at
three production sites. Our partner Bellmart in China with about
300 employees has been producing our sleeping bags for ten
years. Today we are their second largest customer and fill about a
quarter of the entire production.

Audit
Team
Our way often takes us to Asia: every four to six weeks a member of our headquarter team in Gersthofen/Germany is visiting
the factories. Yet we still wanted to be verified by an independent institution and therefore joined the FWF (Fair Wear Foundation) in 2011 and complied to the organisation’s strict Code of
Labour. The workers at the production sites are educated about
the Code in their native language and its implementation is monitored by independent inspectors. The FWF report 2013 showed
that we have fulfilled or even exceeded all the requirements.
Since June 2014 100% of our production volume has been audited by the FWF.
Our way is closely linked to the FWF. The audits play an important role: the productions sites are visited by a team of three experts from diverse disciplines – a supervisor, a specialist in labour
law and an interviewer. They are all natives in the local language
and are thus, of course, also acquainted with the respective country’s traditions and mentality. The FWF announces the audit to
the management, but interviews workers prior to visiting the fac-
minimum
every 2 years
Measures
that can be
implemented
quickly
tory offsite – most of the time in restaurants close to the location
– about working conditions and payment. The FWF further monitors at what times and for how long the factory is producing. The
actual audit reviews documents such as labour contracts, payrolls, accident records and social benefit lists. On a factory tour
the cleanliness, safety measures, personal protective equipment,
fire protection and many more aspects are inspected. And randomly selected workers are once more interviewed.
of course, important to work hard on a solution to ensure the
health of the staff and the quality of the products. We therefore
built a new factory with 1000 employees to relieve the two other sites in Vietnam. Further we developed a detailed plan for our
international market, which is served by many different distributors, and we were thus able to shift orders from the main to the
low season. We can already see the effect of the measures in the
reduction of overtime.
Our way leads to improvements: after the audits the FWF team
develops a “Corrective Action Plan” (CAP). Safety relevant changes have to implemented within a few weeks, while other issues
may require long-term planning strategies.
The 2012 audit suggested a monitoring of the electronic system.
Right away in January 2013 all electronic devices were checked
and defects fixed. Sewing machines, distributor boxes, generators etc. are now also controlled regularly by specialists. A complex issue such as excessive working hours, however, cannot be
solved as quickly – and also not exclusively on site. Yet it is,
On our way we’ve come far. And we will go further – step by
step – to improve the workplace conditions of our employees
worldwide.

The thermo fleece layers are arranged in a
shingle construction overlapping up to three
times for maximum insulation.
Opposing diagonal trapezoid pockets and
additional chambers on the side prevent the
down from shifting. By avoiding cold spots,
this construction can guarantee fantastic
warmth insulation.
Elastic seam construction allows a comfortable, body-hugging fit without feeling
restricted. Thus the bag warms up quicker
and still offers fantastic freedom of movement for a good night's sleep.
Sleeping outside can bring interesting
encounters. Mera Peak Trek, Nepal;

The freshly revised, detailed ergonomic cut of the hood and the
foot section brings our technical synthetic sleeping bags to perfection. The high-tech construction with its internal and external elastic
chamber seams still provides a 25% expansion in width. This brings
