Welcome
From
Catalyst’s
President
& CEO and
Board Chair
We are thrilled you are able to join our annual celebration of diversity and inclusion in
the workplace. This year is especially exciting as we are honoring Gap Inc.’s Catalyst
Award-winning global initiative, Women and Opportunity, as well as celebrating the
historic gender equality efforts by the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister
of Canada.
In 2016, we believe diversity is a fact—and inclusion is a choice. Inclusive leaders have
made a choice to foster a workplace where employees feel included, and in doing so,
they unleash the potential that diversity generates.
Inclusive leaders come in all shapes and sizes. You might be a global leader like Art
Peck, Chief Executive Officer of Gap Inc., and Prime Minister Trudeau—leading by
example and with your influence. Or you might manage a mid-level team, leveraging
the diversity of your people to get the best business results. Or you might be a young
child, asking why some people are treated differently from others.
No matter who we are, EACH of us can make change. EACH of us can make a choice
to act inclusively—implementing the EACH behaviors that Catalyst research has linked
to inclusion: Empowerment, Accountability, Courage, and Humility. Ultimately, it takes
EACH of us to actively engage one another in thoughtful dialogue and intentional
actions in order to accelerate progress for women and workplaces around the globe.
The effects of inclusion aren’t just felt in the workplace—they extend out through our
families, communities, and societies. It is our connection to these people and places
that provides us with opportunities to be inclusive leaders. Learning to value people
who are different from us at work helps us value them outside of work as well.
At Catalyst, our vision is changing workplaces and changing lives. We offer a full range
of research and action-oriented tools to help you spark inclusion in your workplace and
your community. We celebrate inclusive leaders like all of you here tonight.
And we humbly ask EACH of you to stand with Catalyst and choose inclusion.

Letter From Our Dinner Chair
Welcome to the 2016 Catalyst Awards Dinner
I am delighted to welcome tonight’s 1,600 guests, including the Rt. Hon. Justin Trudeau, Prime
Minister of Canada, and leaders from the worlds of business, government, NGOs, and education.
Tonight we will join together to celebrate this year’s winner: Gap Inc.’s Women and Opportunity.
Since Gap launched its initiative in 2007, women’s representation at the Vice President level
has increased globally from 44% to 49%. In the United States, women of color’s representation
increased from 28% to 34% among all employees and from 20% to 23% among store managers,
managers, and senior managers. At the most senior leadership level—those reporting to the
CEO—women’s representation more than doubled from 33% to 77%, and women of color
comprise four out of the 10 women who report directly to the CEO. Perhaps most notably,
between 2010 and 2015, women’s representation on Gap Inc.’s Board of Directors has increased
from 10% to 36%.
Gap Inc.’s Women and Opportunity initiative is truly groundbreaking in its support of women in
the workplace and their local communities. These efforts also raise the bar and provide a model
for other organizations seeking to attract top talent, advance women’s representation, increase
employee engagement and retention, and drive business results.
Tonight, we also celebrate Prime Minister Trudeau and his leadership in advancing diversity and
gender equality. Through his commitment to embracing inclusion, the Prime Minister sets an
example that shows leaders throughout the world what is possible when they deliberately build
diverse teams that reflect the marketplace and the communities they serve.
For me personally, it is a great honor to be chairing this evening. Throughout my career, and
especially during my time in leadership roles with KPMG, I’ve always been committed to creating
opportunity and pathways to leadership for women–and ultimately it’s that aim that brings us
together this evening. So, let’s all raise a glass to our winners and all those who are working hard
to further the aims of Catalyst and accelerate the progress of women through workplace inclusion.
Thank you,

2016 Catalyst Award-Winning Initiative
MAJOR COMPONENTS OF THIS STRATEGY INCLUDE:
Women and Opportunity
Women and Opportunity is Gap Inc.’s global initiative
and strategy to align all efforts related to women,
including employees, customers, supply-chain
workers, and women within the broader community.
Gender equality, as embodied by Gap Inc.’s cofounders’ Doris and Don Fisher’s partnership, has
always played an important role in the company’s
history and success. In 2007, Gap Inc.’s leaders
became more intentional in their work, sharpening
the strategic focus on gender and increasing
programming that promotes women’s leadership
across regions. In addition, existing diversity and
inclusion efforts were reorganized and integrated
more systematically across the organization to make
a positive impact on employees’ lives.
Gap Inc.’s approach to gender inclusion is unique in
that it does not target a specific diversity challenge;
instead, it leverages Gap Inc.’s long-standing culture
of equality and inclusion as a business tool to attract
top talent, advance women’s representation globally,
increase employee engagement and retention, and
drive business results.
Thanks to Gap Inc.’s long-standing commitment to
inclusion, its initiative has achieved remarkable results.
Between 2007 and 2015, women’s representation
at the Vice President level increased globally from
44.0% to 49.7%. In the United States, representation
of women of color increased from 28.0% to 34.4%
among all employees and from 20.4% to 23.9%
among store managers, managers, and senior
managers. At the most senior leadership level—those
reporting to the CEO—women’s representation has
gone from 33.0% to 77.0%, and women of color
comprise four out of the 10 women. Notably, between
2010 and 2015, women’s representation on Gap Inc.’s
Board of Directors increased from 10.0% to 36.0%.
DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION (D&I) COUNCIL:
Executives from different parts of the organization work closely
with Human Resources and leaders “on the ground.” The
Council guides the company’s strategy around diversity and
inclusion by engaging employees through grassroots activities
such as Employee Resource Groups (ERGs). It also partners with
other parts of the organization on diversity-related efforts, such
as for the creation of the evidence-based pay for performance
practices and an organization-wide pay equality analysis. The
Council’s approach is “think globally, act locally,” with women’s
strategy as an area of commonality across regions and functions.
RECRUITMENT, TALENT DEVELOPMENT, AND TRAINING:
Activities are tailored to location, brand, function, and
employee needs. Programs include partnerships with nonprofit
organizations and community colleges, entry-level fielddevelopment programs, as well as cross-brand development
curricula that target high-potential talent, such as the signature
programs ASCEND and ICON.
WORK-LIFE AND FLEXIBILITY:
Work-life integration is a fundamental strategy to help all
Gap Inc.’s employees reach their full potential and thrive
both personally and professionally. Following a 2009 Results
Only Work Environment (ROWE™) pilot that helped improve
employee productivity, accountability, and engagement, a variety
of flexible-working arrangements are now implemented across
the organization. Flexible working has helped create a culture
that consistently values results over face time, even in regions
such as Japan, where face-time expectations are often prevalent.
COMMUNITY AND CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY:
Externally focused activities are closely integrated with Gap
Inc.’s diversity strategy to improve workplaces and communities.
In addition to region-specific volunteer and community
efforts, Gap Inc.’s signature program Personal Advancement &
Career Enhancement (P.A.C.E.) provides life skills, education,
and technical training to female garment workers. P.A.C.E. is
currently active in 11 countries and 70 manufacturing facilities.
More than 30,000 women have participated in the program
since 2007, and Gap Inc. is currently expanding the program to
reach one million women by 2020.

leaders throughout the world.
Many Paths
One Goal.™
At Pfizer, women are leading businesses, leading manufacturing sites, and leading
the operations in foreign countries. They are leading the discovery of new medicines
and leading the teams that ensure those medicines get to patients safely and are
marketed effectively. Most of all, they are leading the way for hundreds of Pfizer
women to advance their careers and join the executive ranks.
Women at Pfizer enjoy visible support from senior leadership, access to robust
mentoring, sponsorship and development programs, an array of flexibility options,
