FROM THE PRESIDENT
Thank you for the large turnout at
the February HOA Meeting for
the elections to the Board of
Directors and the Negotiation &
Mediation Committee.
Congratulations to John Kratz, Larry Roberts and
Dick Roller who will return to the Board and to
Nancy Arthur who will join us as a new member.
Many thanks to Gene Robinson for his service on
the Board!
additional security around your home, especially
for your golf cart.
In a separate article in this issue (page 6) you will
find a list of 2014 budget items approved by
American Land Lease for our community. The
Board appreciates the items included in the budget
but was disappointed that the list did not include a
cover for the mail box area and an expansion and
renovation of the dog run area. We will continue
to pursue these items in our discussion with
management.
On the Negotiation & Mediation Committee I
would like to welcome the return of Judy
Henderson and new member, Tyrone Beard.
Please take advantage of the many activities in
our community for the month of March. Also, I
hope to see you at our next HOA meeting on
March 4 at 7 p.m. Speaking at our meeting will
be Ron Achille, the new Regional Vice President
for American Land Lease.
I was pleased to accept the Board's appointment
as President for another year along with Vice
President Colin Phelps, Treasurer Dick Roller and
Secretary John Kratz. I want to assure you that
we will strive to do the best we can to represent
you with management and to make Blue Heron
Pines a safe and active place to live.
Thank you,
Jack Sternisha, HOA President
This issue of the Gator Tales will probably be in
your hands right about the time of our annual
auction (February 28). Please be sure to attend
and support this important HOA fundraiser.
Much appreciation goes to Gene Robinson and his
committee for all the work they put into this event
and for Gene's willingness to use his talents as an
auctioneer.

AMERICAN LAND LEASE BUDGET ITEMS
by President Jack Sternisha
At a meeting with Manager Valerie Dixon, she
shared the list of 2014 budget items for our
community. Although the list did not include
expansion/renovation of the dog park, it is her
hope that she can find money within her budget to
do some work on the area. Also, the shuffleboard
area was not included in the original list but I
included it because Val plans to also find the
money to do some work on it. The ALL list is:
1) New swimming pool furniture.
2) Paving and repairs to the entrance of the park
and to Fairway Drive.
3) Repair work on the deck of the clubhouse.
4) Repair of the bridge to the swimming pool.
5) Refurbish the shuffleboard & horseshoe pits.
6) New storage barn in the Pro Shop area and
removal of the old trailer.
7) New golf course irrigation pump & repair of
the retaining wall on hole #6.

ANNUAL SURVEY COMING SOON
by Vice President Colin Phelps
Sometime soon, I expect American Land Lease
will be sending out their annual survey. You
should look around Blue Heron Pines and see if
your community has improved since last year’s
survey. If you think it has improved and they are

doing a great job, then American Land Lease
would like you to give them a perfect 10, but you
should feel free to score according to your
perception of how they are doing. Your name
need not appear, and ALL is looking for the truth
so they can increase their scores in any areas
needing improvement. I am sure that, as was
done in the past, when the tally is in American
Land Lease will share the results with your
Board, and we will share them with you.
As you can see, it takes many people to make this
work. We appreciate all those who made this
evening a success!

VOLUNTEER NEEDED

As many of you in Blue Heron Pines know, I have

please contact me (Jill at 608-334-8836 or
[email protected]), and I will give you
information as well as some supplies that are left.
If no one volunteers, these duties will fall to the
monthly event host committees.

John Salvucci, newly elected FMO State
President, spoke to the needs of manufactured
housing residents. He informed us that the two
companion bills (SB114/HB29) that the FMO has
been pushing for passage have been “gutted” from
the wording of the original bill. The bill has lost
its protection clauses for manufactured housing.
He stated that Senator Kelli Stargel, Regulated
Industries Chair, has blocked the bill and gutted
the wording so it would now be of more help to
park owners rather than homeowners. It may
come to a point where the bill will be pulled by
Senator Dean rather than allowing voting on it.

We sometimes have fellow residents with health issues or
who have a loved one who has passed on, but I do not

to receive a card from all of us who care. So please, if you

person is not alone when they need friends, and please
give me a call. We never publish any information about a
person’s illness, but a card is sent from all BHP residents.

Hello Fellow Readers: BHP library had another
good month, a lot of new books. There is a new

purchase it! The biographies & reference books
have been moved to that bookcase. Also, the
bench between the men’s and ladies’ restrooms
has been recovered - thanks to Kay Ruffner and
Sally Sullivan.
Have a happy March and happy reading.

is a state located in the
Southeastern United States. It is
bordered to the north by North
Carolina, to the south and west
by Georgia, located across the
Savanah River, and to the east by
the Atlantic Ocean. Originally part of the
Province of Carolina, the Province of South
Carolina was the first of the 13 colonies that
declared independence from the British Crown
during the American Revolution.
JUKEBOX
The coin was pushed into
the slot and it rattled away
to its unknown
destination, flicking
levers and triggering
switches as it went, and
the machine was suddenly
alive. Rows of buttons,
numbers and letters
awaited the command, lighting up as they were
chosen and setting the magic in motion.
South Carolina was the first state to ratify the
Articles of Confederation. The current United
States Constitution was proposed for adoption by
the States on September 17, 1787, and South
Carolina was the eighth state to ratify the US
Constitution on May 23, 1788. South Carolina
later became the first state to vote to secede from
the Union, which it did on December 20, 1860. It
was readmitted to the United States on June 25,
1868.
A carousel of black plastic discs rolled and
stopped, a mechanical arm pulled out one of the
numbers, twisted it and brought it down onto the
waiting turntable. The stylus was lowered and
after a second of crackling, a much-loved song
boomed out, the deep bass and the drums taking
on a new resonance as big speakers brought to life
the music in a way a little transistor radio never
could.
South Carolina is the 40th most extensive and the
24th most populous of the 50 United States. The
state is comprised of 46 counties. The capital and
largest city of the state is Columbia, while the
largest metro area is Greenville.
For a single coin our favorite artists played on
demand and in many small towns around the
country in the sixties, this was as close as we were
ever going to get to seeing or hearing them
perform live.
The colony of Carolina was settled by wealthy
nobles, mostly from Barbados. King Charles II
named the colony in honor of his father Charles I.
King Charles II gave eight aristocrats a royal
charter to settle Carolina because earlier they had
helped him regain his throne. Parts of Carolina
were colonized earlier by Spain, but battles
between the Spanish and the Native Americans
caused the Spanish people to retreat to Florida,
Cuba, Mexico, and Central and South America.
Carolina did not develop as planned. It split into
northern and southern Carolina, creating two
different colonies. It separated because of political
reasons as the settlers wanted political power. In
1729 Carolina became two royal colonies, North
Carolina and South Carolina. On March 26, 1776,
the colony adopted the Constitution of South
Carolina becoming the first republic in America.
John Rutledge was elected as the state’s first
president.

A jukebox is a partially automated music-playing
device, usually a coin-operated machine that will
play a patron’s selection from self-contained
media. It is unlikly that young people today
would come across either a jukebox or a black
plastic record, except possibly in a bar.
Coin-operated music boxes and player pianos
were the first forms of automated coin-operated
musical devices. Early designs used paper rolls,
metal disks, or metal cylinders to play musical
selections enclosed within the device. In 1890
these devices were joined by machines which
used actual recordings instead of instruments.
Electrical recording and amplification improved,
and there was increased demand for coin-operated
phonographs. The term jukebox came into use in
the United States around 1940.
10
Wall boxes were an important
and profitable part of any
jukebox installation. Serving as a
remote control, they enabled
patrons to select tunes from their
table or booth.
ASK THE BOARD
Q: The HOA has over $18K in the bank and are
always raising more money, especially at this time
of the year. I would like to know what the plans
are for that money. Are the people who work so
hard to obtain those donations going to benefit
from it.
Jan Crail
A: From time to time over the years the Board of
Directors has used the money in the treasury for
major expenses, including the sound system and
the storage shed. Concerning the current balance,
we are considering using some of this money to
improve the current sound system. The Board
also wants to keep a healthy balance in case the
legal fund needs additional money in the event we
ever need to challenge the actions of American
Land Lease in court. The money in the treasury
also backs up all activities in case of a deficit. All
major expenses of $800 or more need the approval
of the HOA membership. Suggestions for use of
our money are always welcome. Just contact a
Board member.
Jukeboxes were most popular from the 1940s
through the mid-1960s, particularly during the
1950s. By the middle of the 1940s, three-quarters
of the records produced in America went into
jukeboxes. Jukeboxes once received the newest
songs first. They played music on demand
without commercials. They offered a means to
control the music listened to beyond what was
available through the technology of their heyday.
Jukeboxes seem to have been superseded by
personal digital audio players, and the easy and
free access to music on demand. There is less
incentive to play a jukebox to reproduce music.
While jukeboxes maintain popularity in some
bars, they have fallen out of favor with what were
once their more lucrative locations, restaurants,
diners, military barracks, video arcades and
laundromats.

GOLF COURSE NEWS by Matt Licata
February was a great month at Blue Heron Pines.
We raised $1,930 in our first annual
Rally for the Cure in support of
Susan G. Komen Foundation. I’d
like to thank each and every person
who participated or had a hand in
helping in this great event. This
event truly showed the generosity of our BHP
residents.

A sportswriter at the time called it "the most
sensational basketball shot in Madison Square
Garden history, a three-quarter courter from 60
feet out." Kirsch remembers it as longer: 84
feet. Either way, we're talking a legitimate
three-pointer in today's game.
Swish; ballgame. Kirsch, a 75-year-old
Rensselaer native now living outside of Fort
Myers, Fla., still has the ball.
That may have been Siena's most amazing play,
but it wasn't Bill Kirsch's biggest contribution
to Siena basketball. The guard went on to be the
school's basketball coach and athletic director,
guiding Siena into Division I basketball in 1976.
"He was the driving force in the most
transformative decision this program made going Division I," current athletic director John
D'Argenio said.
From 1972 to 1992 Kirsch served as athletic
director for the Siena Indians, who in 1988
became the Saints. From 1972-82, he coached
the team, compiling a 142-111 record.
Kirsch is quick to spread credit for the Saints'
rise to a solid mid-major, from his assistants and
administration to Siena's devoted fan base and
the coaches and staff hired by himself and those
in his wake.
"I'm very proud of what we left behind," he said.
Kirsch was there at the first end of the SienaUAlbany rivalry, in the 1970s. Should the
current incarnation continue? Don't ask him; he
doesn't want to be the retired guy who kibitzes
from afar. "When I closed that door," he said, "I
closed that door." Kirsch lives with Grace, his
wife of 54 years (60+ years now in 2014),
concentrating on golf and visiting his five
children and 16 grandchildren in the Capital
Region and Tennessee. He keeps up with Siena
when he can and watches some college hoops but never the pros. He is souring on the current
game. The problem, Kirsch said, is there is a
greater emphasis on pure athleticism than
basketball talent. "If I hear the word
`athleticism' one more time, I will get sick," he
said. Players these days can't even nail a
legitimate 3-pointer.

A CELEBRITY IN OUR MIDST!
Blue Heron Pines has a basketball celebrity
living at #365 Potomac Drive – Bill Kirsch! The
following article was published in The Times
Union (Albany, NY) - Monday, Jan. 28, 2008,
Author/Byline: Mark McGuire, Senior Writer.
Siena and Iona at MSG - A Look Back
Bill Kirsch’s Legendary Shot a Prelude to
More Big Efforts for Siena
Fifty-plus years later, it remains the most
amazing play in Siena basketball history (Note:
McGuire's story was written before Onions!
Double Order!!). There may come one that will
be more important - but it probably won't be
longer.
The scene: The old Madison Square Garden.
The teams: Siena and Iona. The score: 54-54
with seconds remaining. It's the second-to-last
game of 1953-54 season. Siena's Dick Smith
inbounds to Bill Kirsch.
The 5-foot-8 guard turns, takes a step and
launches a two-hand set shot from just inside the
foul line.
Yeah, Kirsch was still shooting a two-hand set
shot. The jumper was just coming into vogue,
but if "Coach (Dan Cunha) saw you doing that,
he wasn't too happy," Kirsch said.
It worked just fine on that buzzer-beater at The
Garden from inside the foul line ... on the other
end of the court.
"One end to the other, end line side of the foul
line at the buzzer," Kirsch said. "It didn't hit
backboard and it didn't hit rim."
