Parenting Ideas Magazine
ISSH has taken out a subscription to Parenting Ideas, a magazine produced by a well know Australian parent educator,
Michael Grose. The articles are of interest to parents of children/teens of all ages and cover a huge range of topics. By
clicking on the link below you can access the September edition of Parenting Ideas with articles including: Possible Effects of
Early Puberty, Characteristics of 12 year olds, the Importance of Attention, Protecting Children Online, just to name a few.
You can also access previous issues.

Parking at ISSH
All drivers entering the campus must have a vehicle access permit clearly displayed on the front windshield of their car.
Access will be permitted through the ISSH car park only, and no cars will be allowed to enter from the main entrance to the
University via Nisseki Dori. Parking is only allowed during drop-off/pick-up or engagements at school; no all-day parking is
allowed. Vehicle access permit may be applied for through the school office.
No Dogs, Please
Dogs are not allowed anywhere on the campus which ISSH shares with the convents, the University, a dormitory
and some other institutions of the Sacred Heart. It is also strongly urged that dogs are not chained to the school
gate or fence while the parents take their children into/from school. The school often receives complaints from
the convents and the neighboring residents when dogs bark or snuggle up to passers-by.
ISSH School Handbook
ISSH Handbook will not be distributed to students this school year. We ask you to read the following sections of the school
website so that the students and parents will become familiar with the school’s Philosophy, the Goals, History, Emergency
Plan, Policies and Services.

ISSH Mother Tongue Program 2012-2013
The Mother Tongue Program provides extra-curricular language lessons for those students who have a first
language other than English. This gives students the opportunity to maintain their first language. At the
same time, these lessons can also help to consolidate the content of the mainstream curriculum that is
studied in English at school during regular classes. (For example, if you are studying Ecology in Science,
you could also choose to study the main ideas from that topic in your first language as well). The
coordinator of the program will help to organize a classroom for your lessons, advise on appropriate
materials and course content and, where possible, find a qualified language instructor. Lessons may run
weekly throughout Semesters 1 and 2 or they may be organized on a more or less intensive basis.
If your daughter is interested in joining one of these lessons please contact Karen Wilson (MTP Coordinator) at
[email protected] for more details.

Emergency Dismissal Procedures
Typhoon or Snow Days: During typhoon season, we ask our parents to be aware of the school policy regarding early dismissal
in a minor emergency. If a serious typhoon is threatening the Kanto Plain area please make sure that you can be contacted
easily either at home or work in case of early dismissal. Homeroom teachers will dismiss the students according to the
emergency dismissal form filled out by the parents. In the event of an emergency closing of the school due to typhoons,
snow or other causes, the students will be dismissed according to the procedures below.
Earthquake: In the event of a severe earthquake it will probably be impossible for anyone to return home for at least 24
hours. Therefore, all staff members and students will remain on campus and no attempt will be made to contact parents
after the earthquake. Parents are asked to come and collect their children only after the roads are declared safe.
Transportation Strike: School will be open even if there is a transportation strike. It is at the parents' discretion to determine
whether their child should attempt to come to school.
Safety First Tips Commuting To and From School
Parents are asked to please review these tips with your children. If an incident should occur, please CALL 110 as soon as
possible.
• Avoid quiet short-cut routes. Walk with a friend when possible.
• Communicate with parents on the time you will be home (call home when running late).
• Be aware of your surroundings. Avoid having very loud music whilst wearing earphones and being distracted by cell
phones in quiet areas.
• Wear bike shorts under skirts and jumpers.
• Stay more than an arm's length from strangers.
• On a crowded train stand by a woman when possible.
• Yell in Japanese, "TA-SU-KE-TE!"
School Lunch Program
Cezars Kitchen provides a full-day catering service to the students, faculty and staff. Cezars Kitchen offers breakfast and
snacks in the cafeteria from 8:00 am and afternoon snacks are available up until 4:30 pm. Hot lunch is provided as well as
sandwiches and onigiri. Cezars Kitchen works on a debit account system and payments can be made by either bank
transfer, online by credit card (Visa or MasterCard) or with Paypal. Prepayments can also be made directly at the cafeteria.
Kindergarten students are served lunch box style lunches which must be pre-ordered.
Please email [email protected] with any questions or feedback regarding the school lunch program as we always
appreciate your suggestions and recommendations.
From the Nurses’ Office
Welcome to all returning and new families. We hope everyone had healthy and restful summer holidays. Given the current
Tokyo heat that does not look like subsiding soon, we would like to remind you to please encourage your children to drink
plenty of WATER throughout the day to prevent heat related illness. We would also like to remind you to keep practicing with
your children good hygiene habits of hand washing.
Throughout the school year, we will be carrying out head lice checks, health screening, vision, height, weight and hearing
tests. Should you have any questions concerning these or any other health matter(s) for your child, please feel free to
contact the Nurses’ Office. Kindergarten screening will only be performed on request.
Medication
Please administer medications at home whenever possible. Should your child require medication to be administered during
the school day, please provide us with the medication and the following information.
Note
Administer the first dose of any medication at home. This prevents an allergic reaction from occurring at school.
If your child takes medication on a regular basis, please consider leaving a 3-day supply at the Nurse’s Office. Any
medication brought to the school, should be given to the nurse.
All prescribed medication to be administered at school must be received in clearly marked containers, labelled, and
accompanied by a written letter from a parent/guardian with the following details:
1. Name of student
2. Grade
3. Condition for which medication is to be given
4. Name of the medication
5. Dosage
6. Parent/guardian signature
Also, if your child has a food allergy or any type of allergy, please be sure to notify the school nurse and your
child’s homeroom teacher immediately.
Health Forms
All health forms are to be returned as soon as possible. Forms are required for all new students and students

entering grades 1, 4, 7 and 10. Middle and High School students without health forms will not be permitted to go on
excursions. Should you not have these forms on hand, please pick them up in the school office and return the completed
forms as soon as possible.
Lice Check
If you discover your child(ren) has been exposed to lice, please inform the Nurse’s Office. Head lice does not indicate lack
of hygiene. However, it is acquired by direct head to head contact with an infected person’s hair, or by sharing combs, hats,
and/or other accessories.
A tickly, itchy feeling, irritability, sores on the head that have become infected caused by scratching are the main signs and
symptoms of live lice (adult). In Japan, lice are treated with a pediculicide called Sumisurin (powder). It is necessary to
repeat application within 10 days from the first application. In other countries olive oil treatment with a nit comb, is said to
remove lice easier than pediculicide. However, Olive oil needs to be timed with its life cycle. Dry bed clothes and linen in a
dryer, or in the warm sun, vacuum and regular washing of combs, brushes, hats and hair accessories in hot water will help to
eliminate the lice. For additional information, please check with Center for Disease Control, division of parasitic diseases.

Thank you for your attention to these important matters. We look forward to working with you this school year.

KINDERGARTEN/JUNIOR SCHOOL
A Message from Mrs. O’Neill
Welcome back to school!
A new school year! We are very happy to welcome back all our returning students and a very special Sacred Heart
welcome to all our new students – almost 60 in K/JS alone!
We also have some new teachers and new roles this year!
• Mr. Joshua Wilbur is the K5 Bears teacher.
• Mr. Maarten Mulholland will be teaching ESL in the Junior School.
• Ms. Shavonne Davis will be teaching PE to Kindergarten through to Grade 2 (as well as Math in Middle School).
• Ms. Michiko Matsukata is the Grade 1 Red teacher.
• Ms. Ekaterina Shvets is the K4 Lions teacher with Ms. Chito Kunishima.
So a big welcome on board to everyone!
Let’s work together to make this a happy and a successful year for us all!
As with every new school year, we will be making every effort to build upon our strengths and extend our existing program
and to continue to make improvements in all aspects of our curriculum delivery and communication.
This year, technology is taking a very special place in our drive for improvements. In K/JS, we are moving away from
teaching technology as a separate subject. Instead, we aim to embrace technology as one of the tools that we use to:
• access learning resources
• show and share our learning
• research
• communicate our learning
Of course, we will need to teach specific technology skills in order to achieve this. Homeroom teachers will teach the skills
necessary for the various applications and media as and when required by our curriculum. In order to achieve these goals,
Ms. Joy Seed , our ‘e-learning leader’, will be working in partnership with the homeroom teachers to further implement
greater use of technology within the wider curriculum. We believe this approach will have even better learning outcomes
for all our students.
Our theme for this school year is “Make the Wise Choice”- as we focus on the school goal about personal growth in an
atmosphere of wise freedom.
I look forward to meeting each and every one of you and I am available to discuss any questions or concerns you might
have. Please feel free to approach me and introduce yourself if we haven’t yet had a chance to meet.

late (8:21 am for JS students and 8:31 am for K students) should collect an “I’m here” slip from the Lodge or the JS Office,
which they will hand to their Homeroom Teacher as they may otherwise be marked absent.
Playground After School Supervision
Kindergarten Playground
2:50 – 4:00 pm
Junior School Playground

After School Use of the Playground is “At Your Own Risk”. Parents will be responsible and liable for their children
after school. After school is anytime after students are dismissed from classes.
• Kindergarten and Junior School students must be supervised by parents or caregivers after school. Children
unaccompanied by an adult must wait by the Lodge. Parents are expected to provide their own after-school
care. Parents and children are asked to leave the JS playground at 4:00 pm.
• Please note that playground toys/equipment should be tidied away after use.
K/JS Library
Our mission is to provide a vibrant environment that helps students foster a love and appreciation of reading. Reading for
pleasure can be a lifelong joy, in addition to facilitating all academic endeavors. Knowledge of the library and associated
library skills enhance students’ observational skills, critical thinking, creativity and cultural awareness.
Library Bag
Please remember to return your library books, in a library bag on your child’s library day.

Class Photos
Kindergarten and Junior School students will have class photos taken on Thursday, September 13th. Kindergarten children will
be photographed with their smocks on. The Junior School girls are expected to be in perfect uniform: short sleeve white
blouses, navy socks, pinafore and black or navy blue shoes. Please remind your daughters to dress accordingly and hair
accessories should be kept modest.
KINDERGARTEN
Kindergarten Clothing for Warm Weather
In warm weather, we do not require Kindergarten children to wear the red smock over their play clothes. Please make sure
your child’s smock is always in their backpack so that it may be used for art activities.
Indoor running shoes should be provided and kept at school for the days that PE class is held in the gym. Kindergarten can
wear other sport shoes for outdoor PE.
Kindergarten and Junior School - A Message From the PE Department - Kindergarten Sports Kit
Kindergarten children are required to wear shorts, t-shirt, cotton socks and sports shoes on the day of their gym class (Velcro
fastening if they cannot do their own laces).
Junior School girls are required to wear navy blue shorts, navy T-shirt, white cotton socks and gym shoes for sports lessons.
We have reassessed the safety issues with our new PE team and would like to clarify the recommended footwear for PE
classes. Previously white canvas “indoor shoes” were acceptable for PE but these are not the best option for sports activities.
While these indoor shoes do have some grip, they do not provide adequate support for feet and ankles, and often fall off.
Students should wear running/sports shoes while participating in activities in the gym. Good sports shoes have thick soles so
our feet do not feel the pounding on the ground and our ankles are restricted from turning and rolling since the shoes are on
tighter and come up higher on the ankle.
In order to protect our gym floor surface, students are required to have sports shoes that are only worn indoors. Therefore,
ideally students would have two pairs of sports shoes: one pair for indoors and one pair for outdoors. These can be stored at
school for PE days.
We understand that some families have already bought indoor canvas shoes. In this case, please keep this in mind for your
next purchase. We appreciate your cooperation in making sure your child has appropriate kit and can therefore participate
fully in sports lessons. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to talk with the P.E. Department. We also encourage
students to wear the school sun hat, sunscreen protection and to wear bug repellant during mosquito season.
Information and Notices
Kindergarten information is posted in the Pulse and/or in classroom newsletters or websites. Notices may also be sent in the
Friday Folder. When important notices have to go home before Friday, you will find them stapled to your child's backpack.
Snacks and Drinks
Helpful tips to make snack time easier for you, your child and the teachers:
•
Provide the snack in one small container (not 2 or 3 containers), clearly labeled with your child’s name.
•
Healthy snacks please, e.g. fruit pieces, crackers, cookies, dried fruits, etc. No candy or chocolate.
•
Please place snacks in the small front compartment of your child’s backpack.
•
Please place lunches in container clearly labeled with your child's name in the larger compartment of your child’s
backpack.
Important Information on Dismissal
Please send in the Releasing Kindergarten Children form to your child’s teacher of all adults who are authorized to collect
your child if you have not yet done so. Please note immediately if there are any changes to the list. The children will not be
released to any other person unless the teacher receives a note for that day. For safety reasons, there can be no exceptions.
Any change in the usual pick up arrangements need to be communicated in writing to the teacher.
Morning Drop Off and Afternoon Pick Up
Morning Drop Off: The Kindergarten gate opens at 8:20 am and closes at 8:30 am. If you are late, please go to the Lodge or
the JS Office as your child will have already been marked as absent on the register and the office will change this to a tardy.
Afternoon Pick Up: A teaching assistant will open the Kindergarten doors at 2:50 pm. Please allow the assistants escorting
the students on the chain to exit the gate before entering.

Snacks and Lunch Boxes
All JS children should bring a nutritious snack to school for the 9:55 recess. Many of our children feel the need for a midmorning nourishment as breakfast may have been early.
Please inform your child that lunches should not be shared as other children may have food allergies of which your child may
not be aware. Treats should be kept to a minimum. At the same time, it would be helpful if lunches that can easily be
handled by the girls are prepared (fruits cut up, sandwiches cut, etc.). Please do not send carbonated drinks.
Grade One and Two Speech Screening
Mrs. Nancy Cahoon, a speech therapist, will assess all first and second graders during the week of September
24th. The focus of the assessment is the formation of speech sounds. Mrs. Cahoon will contact parents if there is a
need for speech therapy.

MIDDLE SCHOOL
Welcome!
A very warm welcome back to everyone! I hope you had an enjoyable and restful summer. The Middle School welcomes
the Grade 5 students and our 20 new students. Please let us, and your buddy, know how we at ISSH can help you feel at
home. Do not be afraid to ask questions – don’t worry, Middle School is both an exciting place and a challenging place to
be.
I would like to congratulate all MS students on their smooth start to the year, especially the Grade 5 students who have been
struggling to follow a schedule, find their classrooms and keep all of their books together. They are adjusting to MS very well
and deserve to feel proud of themselves. At all MS grade levels there has been an enthusiastic sign up for sports, choir and
other clubs and I hope that this enthusiasm continues throughout the year.
Thank you also to the parents for your support, helping the girls to get to school on time and in correct uniform.
I look forward to working with you and getting to know you better in the year ahead.
Margret Griffiths, MS Principal
Dads and Daughters
Last Sunday was Fathers Day in Australia and this prompted me to remember an article that I had read recently about
fathers and how their relationships can change with their daughters during the adolescent years. Please read the article,
about the importance of the father-daughter relationship that was written by one of my favourite parent educators, Michael
Grose. I would be interested to hear what you think.

Grade 5 Orientation – The First Day of Middle School
Can you remember your very first day of Middle School? As grade 5 homeroom teachers, both Ms. Seed and I remember
feeling incredibly excited and nervous at the same time, and this year’s fifth graders confessed that that is exactly how they
were feeling the morning of Thursday, August 23rd.
It was a day of firsts for the 5th graders, and they embraced every new challenge that came their way. They donned a
brand new uniform, received individual lockers with built in combination locks, studied new schedules that listed numerous
classes and rooms, took a tour of the massive school grounds, witnessed our amazing acting talents, and participated in
some very active team building exercises.
The day ended with many profound thoughts voiced in the
Community Circle. Many admitted that they were very
nervous at the beginning of the day, but the games and
activities had left them feeling much more relaxed and
confident. When asked what part of the day they enjoyed
the most, many commented on how great it was to play with
new people at lunch-time. Many also shared excitement
about being “more grown-up” now and expressed
eagerness about taking on more responsibilities. As their
homeroom teachers, we reminded the girls that they would
face challenges in Middle School, and we encouraged them
to remember to work together and to ask for help when they
need it.
Then, the 3:30 bell rang, and it was time to head home.
Excitedly, the new fifth-graders rushed out of the classrooms
and to their lockers. We watched them pack their bags with
smiles on their faces and cheerfully wave goodbye to each
other, and we smiled too. We look forward to having a great year with all our new fifth-graders.
Sincerely,
Ms. Seed and Ms. Fish
MS Health Screening

SOFIS 2012
From August 6th to 8th, Anna Butcher and Orie Kashima from G12 and Erika Mori and
Lucy West from G11 represented ISSH at the SOFIS (Society of all five Sacred Heart
High Schools in Japan) workshop. Sankocho, the Japanese Sacred Heart school in
Shirogane, Tokyo, hosted about 30 students who studied World Religions, the SOFIS’s
theme for 2012. The girls deepened their understanding of multi-culturalism through
the study of major religions, then focused their inquiry on specific religions through
various field trips to local places of worship including the Turkish Muslim Mosque and
St. Mary’s Cathedral, among others. The students enjoyed fellowship with their new
friends from other Sacred Heart schools in Japan and will report their research to
the students from their respective schools. A big thank you goes to Mrs. Mami
Takagi and Mrs. Kazuko Narui for helping the students with their preparation and for
Mrs. Ayuko Tomita for chaperoning the students.
Requests for Letters Of Recommendation
Parents are reminded to contact Ms. Takako Tajiri, the Middle and High School Registrar, if a student requires letters of
recommendation. To ensure that the process goes smoothly, Ms. Tajiri should be your first point of contact.
Email Communication with Faculty
2012-2013 Faculty Email Address List is in the Confidential section of ISSH website. Parents are welcome to make email
contact with any member of the ISSH faculty if they have concerns about their daughter. Every effort should be made to
empower older students who should be encouraged to contact their teachers themselves wherever possible. If a parent
wishes to contact a teacher by email, please be aware that they are often teaching and do not access their email during
the school day. If the message is urgent, please contact the teacher or appropriate principal by phone. Teachers will do
their utmost to reply to emails within 24 hours Monday to Friday. Please keep in mind that teachers may not check their
school email on weekends and holidays. Please include the student’s name and grade in the subject line.
Attendance
As per school Attendance policy, a telephone call from a parent is required by 9:00 am on the day of the absence to report
a student’s absence.
Tuesday Morning Assemblies
Every Tuesday morning, the High School has an assembly in the AVR that starts at 8:10 am. Please support your daughter in
her endeavor to leave the house a little earlier to get to school in time.

PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION/PARENTS’ ADVISORY COMMITTEE
Dear parents of our wonderful ISSH children:
Congratulations to the parents who participated in both our first PA meeting and our first social, “Break the
Ice.” We have jump started ourselves into what will be a very rewarding year experiencing the learning growth
of our younger family ones.
Witnessing the energy and excitement in the mixing of our seasoned parents with our new welcomed families
was excited to see.
“Make a Wise Choice,” is this year’s school theme, and we are looking forward towards extending that theme
to us as parents.
Every year, we as fathers and mothers join and work together supporting and assisting the school in providing
value added to the education, safety and fun environment to our school’s extended family.
We look forward with open arms, a big smile, in welcoming all to our Parents Association. There is no bigger
heart than the willingness of a father or mother volunteer, very powerful positive message to our children.

COMMUNITY
TELL Auction 2012
TELL (Tokyo English Life Line) has been serving the international and internationalized Japanese community with confidential
support and western-style counseling services for almost 40 years.
The 17th Annual TELL Connoisseur’s Auction will be held on Friday, October19th, 2012 from 5:30 pm to 9:00 pm at the Australian
Embassy in Tokyo. Some 400 distinguished guests will gather for live and silent auctions of fine wines and luxury goods, wine
tasting, a cocktail buffet, and world-class entertainment.
This is the biggest charity event of the year to benefit TELL. Due to the recent global financial crisis, it is becoming
increasingly difficult to secure grant money and general donations. At the same time, increasing numbers of low-income
and unemployed families are seeking services at TELL. The success of this event is crucial for our being able to continue
offering the services we provide to all families that need them.
If possible, please include the information about the 17th Annual TELL Connoisseurs’ Auction in parent/teacher newsletters
provided by your school. An event poster has also been attached as a PDF. Please feel free to display and distribute it as
desired.
For security reasons, this event requires all attendees to be pre-registered. The deadline for registration is Monday, October
15th. For those people who are unable to attend this event, we also have raffle tickets for sale. Volunteer opportunities are
also available. For more details of this event and how to be involved, please visit our website www.telljp.com or feel free to
contact us.
Thank you for your time and consideration, and we send you our warmest regards.
Sincerely,
Aska Aoshima
Coordinator
