The Irish Whiskey Awards
Now in its third year, the Irish Whiskey Awards is tailored to reflect
the diversity, innovation and quality of distilling in Ireland. This
year there were over 80 products entered ranging from classic
whiskeys to the new wave of craft gins and vodkas. We were
astounded to see an amazing 13 gins alone! The judging is done
in the most impartial manner possible with volunteers coming
from both the Celtic Whiskey Club and the Irish Whiskey Society.
We must extend our thanks to all the brave tasters who took
part in blind tasting of the samples, it was a hard job in the end
and we must commend them on their enthusiasm and focus. It
must also be said that many judges were amazed at the quality
of products on offer this year. We do hope the distilling industry
continues down this path and increases awareness for these
amazing products around the world.

2015
that the Midleton Very

of carefully matured
single cask whiskeys
continues to grow from

They are usually limited
to around 300 bottles

release is unique. We
carefully select different
types of barrels from
our wine contacts

previous favourites
have been aged in Port,
Madeira, red wine and
even sweet Vin Santo

is aged to perfection

them regularly before
choosing the exact

these sell out quite

Refusing to rest on their laurels
Irish Distillers have continued to
improve and expand their range of
whiskeys. Last year they opened
a new still house and have also
built a new warehouse to help
mature their impressive line-up
of whiskeys. Single Pot Still fans
have been rewarded with some
interesting new releases. These
have included the innovative Dair

which have been matured in
single origin Irish oak and some
impressive changes to the

Newly released in 2015,
this is a traditional style
pot still whiskey with a
robust and spicy flavour.
We also tasted some
glorious barley sugar,
banana and subtle
sherry nuances. This

it a lot, especially at
this price.
A classic Irish pot still
whiskey that harks back
to the days when wine
merchants would bottle
famous whiskeys under
their own labels. This
has always been closely
associated with Jameson
and would make the ideal
gift for any Jameson drinker
who might be looking for
something special.
A uniquely aged Irish
whiskey which has spent

Sherry and also Malaga

Named after the famed

is widely regarded as his
finest creation. The pot

in both ex-Bourbon and
fresh, unused American

sweet vanilla, candied

flavours.
This has always ranked
very highly amongst
our staff. Redbreast is
a slightly heavier style

compared to the rest
of Midleton’s whiskeys.
The added bonus of
ageing in some Oloroso
Sherry casks gives this
whiskey a rich, fruitcake and spice laiden

Do not be put off by

Mortlach
Distillery
Gordon & Macphail are Scotland’s most respected independent bottlers. They are
based in Elgin near the mouth of the Spey River. For over 120 years they have
been building relationships with other distilleries and have a core range of ‘semiofficial’ bottlings that tend to offer better value for money than the distillery bottled
versions. Mortlach is a perfect example, and the company offer a great range from
this classic Speyside distillery.
Gordon & Macphail have always served this highly sought after distillery well.
The company has good stocks of Mortlach dating back to the mid-1900’s
and recently released a very expensive 75 year old! The distillery is unique in
Scotland, practising a complex form of partial triple distillation. The whiskies are
mostly matured in high quality Sherry casks which contribute to the malt’s rich,
fruity and meaty complexity.

Matured in first fill and
second fill ex-Sherry
casks and bottled in
2014. This is a fresh and
fruity style of Macallan
with subtle sherry cask
influences. This has
vibrant tropical fruit
flavours, with touches
of white chocolate and
strawberries making it a
perfect aperitif malt.
A perfectly aged example
of Macallan. Like the
2005 this is aged in first
and second fill Sherry
casks. Here it has taken
on some lovely charred
oak characters along with
hints of milk chocolate,
spice and fresh fruits.
Something a little bit different
but equally as good as
the other Speymalts. This
expression is aged in first
use Bourbon barrels and
was bottled at 32 years old
in 2013. This is packed with
juicy fruits such as apricots
and pineapple along with
vanilla and ginger spice.
Incredible stuff.

Not your typical Speyside single

Incredibly well balanced and smooth.

A smoky, peaty version of Tomatin

flavours of boiled sweets,
vanilla, toffee apples and banana
confectionary. All embraced
by some warm peat smoke.

Loved by whisky
enthusiasts, Springbank
is a real gem amongst
Scottish distilleries. Their
10 year-old is lightly
peated and made in
a unique 2.5 times
distillation process. A
wonderfully juicy, salty
and fruity single malt
with just a whiff of
peat smoke.
Glendronach’s form is
so good at the moment;
we believe it is bottling
some of the best whisky
in Scotland. Their 18 Year
Old could not be better
balanced. It is entirely aged
in Oloroso Sherry barrels
which gives it dense, dark
fruit flavours and hints of
chocolate and
spice.
Whisky is never
usually this good at
10 years old. This
is made by two
men in Speyside’s
smallest distillery
and is carefully
matured in the
best oak possible.
A complex, gently
smoky, malty and
slightly earthy
tasting single malt.

Kavalan Single Malt Whiskies
Kavalan Single Malt Whiskies
Kavalan is a new Taiwan-based distillery that produced its
first spirit in 2006. The whisky matures a lot faster than
those in other countries thanks to the warm and humid
climate, even at 2 years old tasters have been impressed. It
has already won some very prestigious awards and often
beats similar styled Scottish whiskies in blind tastings. Like
Japan in recent years, it appears that Taiwan could become
a real force in the whisky world. Kavalan is definitely
here to stay and the quality of the whisky is top class.

Japanese & American Whiskeys
Whiskies from Japan have been soaring in popularity for a few years now,
ever since Jim Murray announced a limited edition Japanese malt as his top
choice for the 2015 edition of his Whisky Bible. Unfortunately that is all long
gone, but here we have some very fine (and more affordable) Japanese whiskies.
These hit a convenient flavour profile that for many bridges the gap between
the sweetness of Irish whiskeys and Scottish single malts. We love them!

berries and spices. It is still a baby and
showing the effect of the élevage, as is
usually the case with this wine when so
young. The texture is silky, the tannins
are ultra-polished and it has good
acidity with quite primary flavors that
are precise and clean, more Pinot Noir
than Costers del Segre. A very pleasant Pinot that needs to develop more
nuances in bottle.’

Sherry/Jerez
Sherry is a fortified wine from Spain that many experts rate as the most undervalued
wine category in the world. We are huge fans and have Ireland’s biggest and best selection. Sherry is produced in a variety of styles and works excellently with food. Try a
fino sherry with smoked almonds as an aperitif, or some pedro ximenez drizzled over
ice-cream for dessert. Perfect for the festive season!

wine from Hungary which blew us
away the first time we tried it. 5
Puttonyos refers to the way the
wine is sweetened, and at this level there is great balance between
residual sugar and natural acidity.
The result is a refreshing and delicious dessert wine that tastes great
now but will also reward from
further cellaring.
French cousin, Banyuls is a very
interesting fortified wine from
close to the Spanish border.
Made from 100% Grenache
grapes, this rich and powerful
wine is one of the world’s few
great matches with chocolate.
Compared to an equivalent
