A ROUTER, PURPOSE-BUILT FOR MICROWAVE, CTR 8500
YOUR MICROWAVE NETWORKING NEEDS… SMALLER, SIM
A microwave router is a new concept that merges functionality of a microwave indoor unit and
cell site router. CTR 8500 is designed to offer the greatest degree of flexibility for operators who
need to deliver feature-rich services, via a cost efficient, compact, multi-service, and multifunctional platform. CTR 8500 is the natural evolution of microwave and IP networking, in one.
INTEGRATED NETWORKING
INTUITIVE MANAGEMENT
The CTR 8500 delivers a broad mix of capabilities to
support next generation network evolution. The CTR 8500
combines the latest in Carrier Ethernet switching,
IP routing, Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS),
Pseudowires, Ethernet OAM and packet-based
synchronization, to deliver a single versatile platform
for multiple applications. And unlike traditional microwave
switches, CTR is completely uplink agnostic – providing
the options to transport services to IF or Ethernet
connected microwave, copper, or fiber transport media
for maximum deployment versatility.
If integrated networking wasn’t enough, CTR 8500 combined with Aviat ProVision network management platform
delivers a tightly integrated, intuitively managed networking solution. ProVision provides all the tools for point/
click provisioning and management of all layer 1, 2 and 3
configuration from same interface virtually eliminating
mis-configuration and interoperability concerns while
aligning security / QoS / synchronization policy across
microwave, routing and management domains.
The CTR 8500 offers a full suite of advanced L2 and L3
services, all tightly integrated with microwave transport to
deliver better performing networks.

COMBINING FIVE INTO ONE
LTE-A READY
Combining functionalities of a microwave indoor unit,
layer 2 carrier ethernet switch, IP/MPLS router, PoE
injector and TDM pseudo wire device, CTR 8540 is the
most integrated device on the market. Fewer boxes means
fewer devices to buy and maintain, saving money and
simplifying life. Fewer boxes also means less latency and
lower power consumption, better reliability, and finally no
more interoperability issues.
CTR has all the advanced capacity capabilities to provide
up to 4Gbps per aggregate link with extremely high
channel capacity. In addition, CTR offers ultra low latency
to ensure all your LTE-A services can be deployed with
optimum flexibility and efficiency.
MOST COMPACT SOLUTION ON THE MARKET
COMPACT MATTERS
HIGHEST INTERFACE DENSITY
With growth in capacity and imminent introduction of
small cells, the mobile network topology is changing.
Sites are becoming denser and with tower sites being
leased, cabinet space, power consumption, and tower
space are all becoming increasingly important. Compact
solutions are more important than ever.
As a pure microwave device, CTR is the most compact,
integrated solution on the market. It has 2 times more GE
ports per RU and 50% more radio ports per RU than any
other microwave solution on the market. Even without the
router, CTR is the most highly capable microwave solution
around.

THE SMALLEST MULTI-SERVICE,
MULTI-LAYER HUB
ANY SERVICE
ANY TRANSPORT
Mobile cell sites are transitioning from simple base
stations for voice and low-speed mobile data access
to multi-functional hubs for delivery of new services,
multimedia-rich content and broadband data access.
With the demand for small and to enable fixed-mobile
network convergence, it’s becoming more important
these services can all be delivered over a common
infrastructure. Converging multiple services onto a
common platform, CTR supports radio connectivity
like small cell, Wi-Fi, cloud-based RAN architectures,
and 2G/3G/LTE macrocells, along with range of
IP/MPLS based enterprise services.
To facilitate simple, low cost network migration, and
reduce cell site complexity, tomorrow’s networks will
require devices that converge any transport connections
onto a single platform. LAN/WAN interfaces including
fiber, Ethernet and T1/E1, as well as transport interfaces
including fiber transport and typical microwave
interfaces (IF/coax and Ethernet/PoE) need to be
considered. Supporting all the transport options offers
mobile operators the simplicity and flexibility they require
to expand networks and support legacy services at the
same time. CTR converges all these connections onto a
single, compact multi-layer platform.

IMPLEMENT NEW LAYER 3
SERVICES RIGHT FROM
YOUR BACKHAUL
NETWORK
SAVE AND
MAKE MONEY
CTR 8540 enables you to implement new Layer 3 Enterprise services right from
your backhaul network to allow operators to expand their customer base and
grow revenue.
THE EXPANDING ROLE OF
THE MOBILE NETWORK
Operators need to enrich their offerings to attract and
retain high value customers to offset the flat to declining
ARPU for traditional consumer-level mobile users.
To support new business initiatives, fast and flexible
delivery of new services, such as Enterprise VPN services,
is necessary. This fact, combined with the pending
network densification, means the cell site must evolve
from simply housing
a base station to supporting a
network architecture that accelerates the delivery of
new services to achieve business goals. Mobile cell sites
are transitioning from simple base stations for voice and
low-speed mobile data access to multi- functional hubs
for delivery of new services, multimedia-rich content and
broadband data access.
THE NEW IP-ENABLED NETWORK VISION
IP is the only proven, scalable, future proof technology
that can enable this vision of a next generation
communications hub site. Existing mobile backhaul
solutions can make this transition difficult, as more
capacity and smarter devices complicate cell site
configurations, increase costs and add management
overhead. CTR 8500 enables a new integrated cell site
architecture, transforming the cell site and restructuring
the mobile backhaul cost equation—making the new
service-delivery cell-site vision possible with fewer boxes
and lower costs.Build upon existing investments for an
evolved approach to deploying and migrating to all-IP.
