St. Norbert School
It Was a Great Year!
As I am writing this and thinking about the school
year, I can hardly believe it’s almost over. We are
celebrating our dynamic class of 8th grade students
as they proudly graduate from St. Norbert School.
Many have been here since preschool; others have
joined our school community more recently.
Regardless, throughout their time at St. Norbert
School, they have formed many wonderful
memories that they will carry with them for years
to come.
We are not only celebrating our 8th graders today, but also a wonderful school year. I feel like it was just
yesterday when the school year began, planning for the year, getting to know families, teachers, priests and
staff. And now, the year is nearly over. This has been such an exciting year and it’s always hard to say
goodbye.
With only have a few days left of school, I ask for your continued prayers for the St. Norbert School
community as we prepare for these summer months. Ours is a community that finds its strength because we
pray, work, play, mourn, serve, and learn in communion with each other and Christ. We are blessed!
I wish you all a safe and happy summer!

Wedding Banns
During the month of June the following couples will
promise to love one another as Christ has loved
them. This generous vow, including the willingness
to live together till death parts, to be faithful to one
another, to give each other the right to children, God
willing, gives us a vague, shadowy glimpse of what
the divine love for us must be like.

our support and prayers as they grow with us in
living out the Christian message.
Jubilee Year of Mercy
June 5, 2016
Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Half the liturgical year 2016 is completed after six
months of extraordinary celebrations. The
Incarnation mystery: Jesus’ advent, nativity,
epiphany. The Paschal mystery: Jesus’ passion,
death, resurrection, Pentecost’s Holy Spirit. The
solemnities of Holy Trinity and Jesus’ Body and
Blood. Today the Church resumes Sundays in
Ordinary Time, but with a Gospel of extraordinary
mercy: Jesus raises a dead man to life. Yet the one
who benefits most from his extraordinary mercy is
not the dead son but his widowed mother. With her
husband and only son deceased, this woman’s
material support, in that patriarchal society, had
vanished. So had her emotional support, leaving her
helpless, abandoned, on society’s “peripheries.”
One of Pope Francis’ hopes in calling this
Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy is to transform
us into more extraordinary Christians, by making
our caring outreach to just such vulnerable people,
and our practical self-sacrificing love for them, our
ordinary, daily, Christian way of life!

STEWARDSHIP − A JOURNEY OF LOVE
There are many wonderful references to living the
life of a good steward throughout the Bible, but St.
Paul’s one-sentence summary of Christian
stewardship sums it up perfectly…
“Out of love, place yourselves at one
another’s service.”
To share all we have with a loving and generous
heart is the essence of stewardship and allows us to
embrace Christ’s teachings in today’s world. It’s not
enough to simply talk about the improvements that
need to be made for the sake of our Parish family –
we must work and sacrifice together to make our
dreams reality. God is always with us and will guide
our efforts, but it is up to each member of our Parish
to rejoice in the great blessings God has sent our
way, recognize the gifts He has provided and “give
back” a portion as a measure of gratitude.
In 1 Corinthians 13:1–3, we are called to a lifestyle
of love modeled after Jesus Christ. “Though I speak
with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not
love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging
cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy
and understand all mysteries and all knowledge,
and though I have all faith so that I could remove
mountains but have not love, I am nothing. And
though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor and
though I give my body to be burned but have not
love, it profits me nothing.”
Offering our best with a loving heart is how we are
called to live our lives. Acts of kindness and
compassion to our fellow man, sharing until we
actually feel it, using our talents to benefit the
Kingdom of God – these are habits of a Christian
steward. But nothing is complete or acceptable
without love.
Stewardship is a way of life. It is not something that
we choose to do for a few months and then abandon.
In fact, there is no choice involved – each of us is a
steward. Whether we are a good or bad steward is
entirely up to us. Whether we use God’s gifts in a
loving and generous manner will make all the
difference in the world not only to our Church and
our community, but also to ourselves.

Calendar for 2016/17
Feast of the Visitation
This is a fairly late feast, going back only to the 13th or
14th century. It was established widely throughout the
Church to pray for unity. The present date of celebration
was set in 1969 in order to follow the Annunciation of the
Lord (March 25) and precede the Nativity of John the
Baptist (June 24).
Like most feasts of Mary, it is closely connected with
Jesus and his saving work. The more visible actors in the
visitation drama (see Luke 1:39-45) are Mary and
Elizabeth. However, Jesus and John the Baptist steal the
scene in a hidden way. Jesus makes John leap with joy—
the joy of messianic salvation. Elizabeth, in turn, is filled
with the Holy Spirit and addresses words of praise to
Mary—words that echo down through the ages.
It is helpful to recall that we do not have a journalist’s
account of this meeting. Rather, Luke, speaking for the
Church, gives a prayerful poet’s rendition of the scene.
Elizabeth’s praise of Mary as “the mother of my Lord” can
be viewed as the earliest Church’s devotion to Mary. As
with all authentic devotion to Mary, Elizabeth’s (the
Church’s) words first praise God for what God has done
to Mary. Only secondly does she praise Mary for trusting
God’s words.
Then comes the Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55). Here Mary
herself (like the Church) traces all her greatness to God.

ADULT FAITH FORMATION
Our Sunday Scripture reflection “Who Do You Say that I
Am?” led by Dcn Dennis McAllister continues on the first
and second Sundays of each month in the Library
immediately following the 10:00AM Mass.
We hope you have enjoyed the diversity of this year’s
offerings and will avail yourself of the opportunity as time
and circumstances permit to attend one or more of our
future adult faith formation offerings.
Letters were mailed out to Ministry Heads last week
to request calendar dates for the coming fiscal year.
If you have an event planned at OLB for the period
from July 1, 2016 through June 30, 2017, you
should ensure that it gets put on the Master
Calendar for the Parish. If you did not receive the
letter with reservation forms, please contact Cathy
in the OLB parish office immediately at ccolleran@
olbparish.org or (847) 272-5686. Thank you for
helping us stay organized!
Cycle of Violence
Tension:
* This feels like walking on eggshells.
Nothing is right.
* There is no way to predict what the abuser
wants.
* While there may not be physical violence at
this point, there is emotional abuse,
intimidation, and threats.
* Fear of violence is often as coercive as
violence itself.

More Frequently asked questions about
Family Promise
I have so many questions about the program….
There will be an orientation at OLB the week before the
program begins. To participate in the program all
volunteers must attend the orientation. Since the children
change sites every few weeks, and meet new volunteers
every night, it is important that they not be asked the same
questions over and over again. Our goal is to make them
feel welcome and comfortable. Questions about Family
Promise can also be answered at the Website:
familypromise.org.
Can I sign on the poster in the back to bring a meal or
spend the night and supervise at OLB?
The Family Promise Program is being hosted by The
Catholic Community of Northbrook. There is a sign up
schedule at both sites. If you would like to sign up, please
contact Karla Irving at [email protected]. It is
helpful to have first and second choices of dates. Karla will
contact you about availability of dates.
Are there snacks available for the evening?
Snacks will be available and are planned and provided by
the host committee.
10
What if there is an emergency?
The Family Promise program provides an overnight back
pack which has a Family Promise Cell Phone, a general
first aid kit and a debit card (which can only be used with
prior permission by Guests needing to take a taxi to the
host site). In a health or other situation, volunteers call
911.
How do I know how many to cook for, food choices
and ages of the children?
As of last week, we had 7 adults and 8 children in the
Family Promise Program. The ages of the children were 3
months to 17 years. This may change before June 12.
Family Promise allows families to stay together which is an
advantage over other shelters where the adults are
separated from the children. Karla is coordinating the
meals so that we have a variety of menus for the two
weeks we will be hosting.
Who are the Greeters?
Usually the greeters are one of our Priests or Deacons, or
a member of the planning committee.
What will the participants do at the rectory?
The guests arrive after a full day of activities through the
program. Children often are at school or camp, the adults
are at work or at the agency in Evanston receiving
information on job availability and programs they can
benefit from. The families are often recently homeless and
are in a temporary situation. The goal of the program is to
help the family find permanent housing and resources to
help them stay together.
How Long Will Our Guests Stay at OLB?
We are assigned two weeks in the program (June 12-26).
After that, the guests will move to another site. They arrive
just before dinner and are picked up immediately after
breakfast the next day.
What is the daily schedule?
Dinner is usually at 6:45 pm. Families are to be in their
individual rooms by 9:30 pm, lights out by 10:00. On
Friday and Saturday children can stay in the common area
with a parent as late as 10:00 pm with lights out by 11:00
pm. Breakfast is early; weekdays the guests usually are
picked up by 7:00 am. Times may vary on the weekend
and volunteers will be contacted if there is a change in
schedule.

Koziol ([email protected]) or (847) 714-9428 or
