June 6 2014 - Staffordshire and Stoke-On
The
Word
Edition 182
6th June 2014
Our five community hospitals in North Staffordshire
and Stoke-on-Trent play a vital role in ensuring
integrated, joined up care is available at the heart of
our communities - providing expertise and specialist
services to help people remain or regain their
independence.
It was very encouraging to hear last week NHS Chief
Executive, Simon Stevens, recognising the great
benefit that providing care closer to home, in less
intensive settings, brings to patients, their families and
carers.
This is certainly our approach in Staffordshire and last
Friday we attracted significant national media interest
when we welcomed Sky News, Channel 4 News and
ITN News to showcase the care our staff provide at
Leek Moorlands Hospital.
Thank you to all the staff and particularly to our
patients who were involved in the interviews and
filming and for your support in facilitating this great
opportunity for us to promote our services nationally.
It was good to hear the very warm words that patients
had to say and I hope that the filming did not cause
too much disruption to the delivery of care.
I am certain that the concept of visibility and
engagement with staff from our Leadership Team is
the solution to generate the right culture. It was a
pleasure at the beginning of this week to spend time
at our monthly induction event talking to our latest
cohort of new recruits to the Trust about our vision
and values and also having an opportunity to gain
valuable feedback.
I was particularly pleased to hear from a member
of staff, who has previously worked in other NHS
organisations, that
they welcomed the
visibility of our Executive
Management Team at
the event as they had found
that this had not been the case in previous
organisations where they had worked.
This week I have spent time at the annual NHS
Confederation Conference in Liverpool which is an
event for all organisations across the health service.
There has been a consistent theme across the
conference, delivered by both national politicians and
NHS leaders, of the need to centre services around
patients and service users with community services
being the key part of any solution to the delivery of
improved care.
At the conference it has been a pleasure to see, yet
again, our programme of supporting staff to raise
concerns being highlighted. Helene Donnelly, our
Ambassador for Cultural Change, spoke eloquently
about her role in our Trust and already we have
received interest from many other organisations
around the country.
The 6Cs was also high on the agenda at the
conference with a real emphasis on how the scheme
can be effectively rolled out across all services in the
NHS. We can consider ourselves ahead of the game
on this issue as, from the outset, our 6Cs Challenge
Award has been open to all departments across
the organisation. Please have a look at our special
application pack here and find out how you can
showcase your commitment to the 6Cs and gain an
award.
We all remain mindful that services may require

change in the future to reflect the

Dietitians Week Special Edition
Dietitians week
9-13 June 2014
In this week’s edition of The Word we are celebrating
the impact our dietetic staff and services have in
improving the health of our communities as part
of the very first Dietitians Week; a special week
of national awareness raising and political events
throughout the UK to promote the profession and
dietetic practice.
Dietitians Week was established as part of Trust
a Dietitian, the latest British Dietetic Association
campaign, which highlights the work and worth of
dietitians and the dietetic profession in the UK.

Dietitians week
9-13 June 2014
Celebrating the work of
professionals who can help people
change their lives for the better.
The first ever Dietitians Week takes place across the UK next week from 9 to 13 June. With so many so
called “experts” in the field of nutrition, the British Dietetic Association has decided it is time to take action
and shout about the excellent work being undertaken by the dietetic profession and why dietitians are the gold
standard of nutrition professionals.
Did you know?
Anyone can call themselves a “nutritionist” or “nutritional therapist” without having studied the subject in any
detail. The title Dietitian (or Dietician) is protected by law and Dietitians in the UK must be registered with the
HCPC. A four year undergraduate degree or a post-graduate diploma including clinical placements must be
passed to practice as a Dietitian.
In the Partnership Trust, although we are small in number, dietitians cover a wide range of clinical specialties in
adults and children services across the organisation. We also have an excellent team of support staff including
dietetic assistants, weight management practitioners, advisors, physical activity professionals and administrators
supporting our Registered Dietitians to deliver services that meet the diverse needs of our local populations.
Contrary to popular belief, dietitians are not the food police! We work collaboratively with our patients to help
them to change eating behaviours to support a range of clinical conditions.
Dietitians work in healthcare, industry, the media, education and many other sectors.
If you would like to find out more about any of Partnership Trust’s dietetic services please contact us on the

Waistlines - our service and
what our patients think…
9-13 June 2014
Waistlines is a free, 12 month personalised weight management
service which provides specialist dietetic-led clinics and access to
service projects to support weight loss. Waistlines currently runs
in five districts across South Staffordshire; Cannock, East staffs,
Tamworth, Lichfield and South Staffs.
The service is fully compliant with the brand new NICE guidance “managing
overweight and obesity in adults – lifestyle weight management services” as well as
providing dietetic care for patients with more complex medical needs.
Advanced Weight Management Dietitian Liz Humphreys says “As well as our one to one clinics
we invite patients to join our nine weight management workshops. These are interactive, topic
based sessions to support the weight loss journey. The workshops focus on improving knowledge as well as
supporting patients to develop problem solving skills to support long term changes in lifestyle behaviour.”
“Very good
and informative,
friendly. You felt at

Waistlines work with a range of external
partners to provide services to meet individual
physical activity needs.
programmes
Structured Exercise Programme
Twelve week courses to improve your health and wellbeing whilst
supporting you to lose weight run in partnership with local providers
including:
Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust in Cannock // Friary Grange
Leisure Centre // Burntwood Leisure Centre // Tamworth Borough
Council // Partnership Trust’s East Staffs Physical Activity Team.
Fit for Golf
Waistlines have been working alongside Staffordshire
Golf Partnership and local golf clubs including
Branston Golf and Country Club to deliver a ‘Fit For Golf’
across East Staffs. The programme enables participants
to take part in 8 weeks of structured golf coaching sessions, with the added incentive
of discounted golf club membership on completion. Sessions have an element of fitness
in them where individuals take part in movement and agility tasks, as well as working
up a good sweat hitting plenty of golf balls! Most participants are completely new to
the sport of golf, but we have had some improver golfers also, and the feedback from
individuals has been positive so far:
“It’s a great way to get people with mobility restrictions moving.”
Get Moving Programme Lichfield
Offers an eight week structured programme led by qualified Run England walk
leaders, covering the basics of efficient walking, time trials and hill sessions. Meeting in
Beacon Park, Lichfield every Thursday morning, we cater for the very beginners to those
more experienced walkers looking to take their exercise to the next level.
Waistlines Cook & Eat
Running over four sessions, the course supports
people to achieve their weight loss goals by
teaching simple cooking skills, portion control and
how to modify recipes to make them healthier.
“The cook’ n’ eat was excellent and I picked up a lot of tips. The structured
exercise has really helped me to lose weight and gain some friends from the
class.”
“The cooking sessions were brilliant and gave us lots of useful tips and
alternatives for healthy eating which were also very appetising.” (This couple
have achieved 7 % and 3% weight loss with the service so far.)

Case Study – Vivienne’s Story
Vivienne has been supported by the
Waistlines Adult Weight Management
Service since July 2013 after being
referred by her practice nurse after being
diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and
having a desire to improve her general
health and wellbeing.
Vivienne had tried many times over the
last 20 years, with different organisations,
to lose weight and maintain any weight
lost, without lasting success. Since coming
to Waistlines she has lost 8.7kg (1 stone
5lbs) so far through a combination of
healthier food choices, monitoring calorie
intake and increasing physical activity.
Vivienne goes for regular walks, attends a
gentle exercise class weekly and also does
gentle strength and mobility exercises at
home.
Case Study – David’s Story
A Winshill resident has successfully shed
weight equivalent to 42 bags of sugar
after attending the local NHS Waistlines
Adult Weight Management Service.
David Adams, who works as a volunteer
for the British Heart Foundation, had seen
his weight gradually increase over the
years after giving up a manual job and felt
it was time to take action to improve his
health and fitness levels. In total David
has lost 42kg (6 stone 9 pounds) and has
now reached a healthy weight.
Advanced Weight Management Dietitian Liz
Humphreys explained “David follows a vegan diet
and when I first saw him his intake was very limited
so he was missing out on a variety of nutrients
needed for general health. I worked with David over
several months to improve the vitamin and mineral
content of his diet, alongside his weight loss.”
If you have complex medical needs or a history of
difficulty losing weight or maintaining weight loss,
Waistlines can help. Contact the team today by
calling 01543
509740 or ask
your GP for a
referral. (David
is pictured
holding 5
pounds of fat –
he’s lost over 8
of these!)
“I have fibromyalgia and my new routine
has made a big difference, particularly
with regards to the range of movement in
my arms,” explains Vivienne. “I feel 100
times better and I couldn’t have achieved
what I have without your support!”
As part of the Waistlines support package,
Vivienne has attended workshops held
at Kinver in addition to monthly 1 to 1
appointments with weight management
advisor, Nigel Parton.

Paediatric Dietiticans – There at the
start of life
9-13 June 2014
Paediatric Dietitian Hannah Riordan has been
supporting the family of 20 week old JJ who
has a heart condition, lip and tongue tie and
suffers from severe reflux. The family had been
frequently visiting consultants at their local
hospital for care and monitoring but were later
referred to the community dietitian’s team based
at Samuel Johnson Hospital in Lichfield.
JJ’s aunt Mairian explained how having care
at home has really helped them. “JJ had real
problems maintaining his weight and the hospital
put him onto a feeding pump overnight while he
rested. He needs a very high calorific feed to help
him gain weight but this made him sick and his reflux
worse.
“Hannah has been able to advise on the right type of feed for him and now he is not nearly as bad. We
also had to wean him much earlier because of his conditions and Hannah’s help on what foods he might
tolerate better and help him gain weight has been really helpful.
“Hannah visits every fortnight and rings us in between too. She also handles all the ordering of his medical
supplies which is a lot less stress for us.
“JJ is starting to really improve and in the last week put on 5 ½lbs so he’s done really well.”

Make Every Mouthful Matter….. A
simple story in East Staffordshire
Gillian Rudge, Prescribing Support Lead Dietitian and Cath
Babington, Dietetic Assistant, East Staffordshire are taking
forward dietetics proactively to try and meet the challenge of
malnutrition in the community.
They assess people who take oral nutritional supplements
(specially prescribed drinks and puddings) and support and
educate them with simple but effective messages to improve
their nutritional health.
This work has been taking place in nursing homes and
in GP surgeries with selected patients invited to attend a
consultation.
Gillian and Cath believe that there are many missed
opportunities to get pleasure and benefit from food and that
the message is implicit in “making every mouthful matter”
to get the best from everything we eat and drink for physical,
mental and emotional wellbeing.
By supporting health care staff with early identification of
malnutrition through the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool
(MUST) and training them to give simple but effective first line
advice, there is a real opportunity to precipitate a knowledge and
culture change.
This will support patients to become
empowered to own and manage their
own health and nursing home staff
to feel more confident in nutritional
care.

a Healthy Weight
Healthy Kid5 is a free, confidential community based child weight
management service for overweight two to 18 year olds and their
families.
We are a multidisciplinary team consisting of paediatric dietitians,
specialist school nurses and support workers. Between us we have
a wealth of skills and experience in working with children and their families. We offer practical advice and
support to promote weight maintenance or modest weight loss to achieve a healthy weight.
Healthy Kid5 works with individual families in a variety of community locations across Staffordshire and the

In some areas we offer a group programme giving children the opportunity to exercise whilst their parents work
as a group, here they learn to develop the skills to encourage healthy food and lifestyle choices that become
part of their family routine.
Healthy Kid5 is a family focussed service and offers support for 12 months with advice on healthy eating and
physical activity to allow the children to achieve a healthy weight. For more information please speak to your

Be Virus Aware – Update from the Information Governance Team
VIRUS
ALERT
What is a computer virus?
It is a program that replicates by inserting copies of itself into other computer programs and data files.
This can result in damage to systems and can even lead to confidential or personal information being
stolen.
Some of you may be aware of the latest threat of a cyber-attack that has been reported by the media in
recent days. This appears more serious than previous threats and whilst the Partnership Trust has levels
of security in place to protect our systems, the Information Governance team think it timely to remind
everyone to take extra care with all emails you receive.
Keeping our systems secure:
• Emails from unknown sources should not be opened.
• If you receive an email from someone you know, but it appears to have suspicious content i.e. that
looks or out of the ordinary, you should seek advice from the Infomation Goverance Team details
below. Do not open any attachment or click on any link that is included in the email
• Never forward chain/junk/joke emails (these often contain viruses)
• Never download and attempt to install any software programs not provided by the Partnership Trust
without authorisation from the IM&T department.

Thank You
“A big thank you to all who gave me treatment to my
foot - helping me to lose the pain I was having.
The Waistlines service has received some great feedback
from a local man who has recently joined a structured
exercise class. “I want to inform you that you have the
most amazing service. I cannot thank you enough. I am
67 years old and have now lost 9kg in your service.
“Ant was so great at putting me and the other guys in
the class at ease as when we first started I was really
nervous and thought it would be fat blokes in lycra
when it was nothing like that. I am now exercising in
the classes and swimming and really enjoy it. I feel great.
Thank you so much. If I could just get one person to join
your groups from this feedback that would be great. It is
such a good service.”
The Reception Team at Cobridge Health Centre have
been praised for their care and excellent service.
“Reception staff excellent, polite and a credit to the
service. One of the best receptionists I have come across!
Here the two girls quietly answered phones etc and no
one in waiting room could overhear them.”
Diabetes specialist podiatrist Lisa Davenport who is
based at Milehouse Primary Care Centre has received a
warm letter of thanks from a patient for her expert care
and treatment.
“We would just like to say a very big thank you, if it was
not for you, I could have lost my foot. You have given me
a second chance and I’m taking it with eyes wide open!”
Also the Diabetes Specialist Podiatry Team at
Milehouse have been praised in an additional letter.
“First to Sue and Angela the routine podiatrist, second to
the specialist podiatrist Lisa Davenport who assessed me
at my local medical centre then fast tracked me the same
day to the vascular clinic at UHNS to see the consultant
Mr Pherwani who arranged for me to have angiogram
and angioplast the same week.
“After 24 hours I had lost the severe pain, then I have
had good follow up treatment. Once again a very large
thank you to all.”
The Seisdon Intermediate Care Team have received
some very positive feedback form a local patient
thanking members of staff for their care and service.
“I have just completed a three day course of intravenous
steroids at home. I would like to thank the Intermediate
Care Team for the wonderful service provided.
“It was all arranged incredibly quickly following my
visit to Brad White, MS Nurse at West Park. The first
visit to my home was on a Wednesday and the steroids
commenced the next day for three days.
“Please pass on my thanks to Brad and all the nurses I
saw - Mark, Barrie, student nurse Laurie who came every
day, Rebecca, Sandra and Jenny. (I hope I have all the
right names).
“Everyone was very helpful and efficient. I have been
most impressed with the service provided. I now wait to
see if the treatment has been successful. Thanks to all.”
Please send all compliments to

are now recording all compliments
for the Trust. A range of selected
compliments will be forwarded for
