Message from the superintendent
Dear CV Community,
This is the graduation issue of the district newsletter, so I will focus my comments on our graduating seniors. I am so
proud of the graduating Class of 2015!
Each graduating class is unique. Members of the Class of 2015 impressed me with their work ethic and how strongly
they believed in giving back to their community. These students are hard-working, kind and respectful, and have set
high standards for the classes following in their footsteps.
When I look at each of their plans for the future, it makes me proud of the role Chenango Valley has played in shaping their lives. Many students are heading to higher education. Some are entering the military, and others are joining the work force. My hope is that we have prepared each of them for an exciting, bright future.
David P. Gill
Superintendent
As I see my own youngest daughter graduate and move on to the next phase of her life, it reinforces to me the
importance of time – how precious it is and how often it is wasted. I challenge each of us to appreciate time – time
with family, time with friends, time spent reading or engaged in good conversation, time appreciating what we have instead of focusing
on what we don’t have, and most importantly, time to enjoy life and appreciate that we are the CV community!
I do want to take time to thank our CV community -- our students, staff, parents, and residents. By working together, we continue to make
great strides in living out our mission to inspire, engage, and empower our students to be life-long learners and productive citizens. Our
staff continues to work tirelessly to support our students, their families, and our community. Our students continue to impress us with
their growth in learning and continued respectfulness and appreciation toward those supporting them. Our parents continue to support
our initiatives with positive capital project, budget, and bus referendum votes. Our core belief that children are our first priority continues
to guide our CV community.
Here’s wishing you a safe, relaxing, fun-filled summer!
Sincerely,
David P. Gill

Board of Education President’s message
Congratulations to the Class of 2015, and to the parents who have helped and supported their children throughout
their years at Chenango Valley. We wish our graduates the very best as they begin the next phase of their lives.
As we move into summer, preparations for the 2015-16 school year are well underway. Our administrative staff is
busy planning and updating programs and initiatives, our maintenance and cleaning crews are getting the school
buildings and facilities in tip-top shape, and many of our teachers are engaging in professional development opportunities.
Gerald Abbey
Board President
Work has begun on Phase 1 of our capital project. We are adding locking hardware on all classroom doors, new
playground equipment at the elementary schools, and additional lockers in the middle school to accommodate the
sixth-grade transition.
On the athletic fields, site work has begun in preparation for the new multi-purpose field, which we expect will be
completed this fall. More information on the capital project is detailed on the next page of this Newscaster.
Whether it’s in the classroom or on the playing field, we’re focused on continuous improvement to make Chenango Valley a better place for
our community’s children.
We wish you and your family a safe and enjoyable summer. We’ll see you in September!

Capital Improvements Project Update
On December 9, 2014, voters approved a capital improvements project that will address top priority maintenance repairs and
improvements at the district. The project is scheduled to be completed in two phases. The first phase of the project has been
designed, approved by the State Education Department (SED), and is now moving into construction.
The project scope for Phase 1 consists of providing a
softball field and multi-purpose synthetic turf field on
the Depot property. The Depot is a parcel of land adjacent to the CV athletic fields which was conveyed to the
district by the federal government in December 2010,
with the stipulation that the district utilize the property
for athletic fields/educational programs.
Other Phase 1 scope items include:
• Adding additional lockers in the middle school for
the transition of the 6th grade to the middle school.
• For security purposes, the door hardware on all
regularly occupied corridor doors is being replaced
in the school buildings.
• New playground equipment at the Port Dickinson
and Chenango Bridge Elementary schools.
New playground equipment at Port Dickinson Elementary.
We are anticipating that the lockers, playground, and
door hardware work will be completed by the end of
this summer. The athletic fields are anticipated to be
completed in the fall.
Project design for Phase 2 is complete and is awaiting
SED approval. We anticipate that construction for this
phase will begin the summer of 2016.
2015 Mini Project Update
Port Dickinson Elementary - Multi-purpose room.
The 2015 Mini Project is underway and is currently in the bidding phase. The project includes
replacement of the auditorium control room, and
middle school gymnasium lighting. If the bids
come in favorably, team room lockers will also be
replaced as part of this project.

PTA organizations to merge
Dear parents, teachers and staff,
We are pleased to announce that a meeting will be held on September 15, 2015 at 6:30 p.m. in
the multi-purpose room at Port Dickinson Elementary School to finalize the organization of the
Chenango Valley Elementary Parent-Teacher Association (PTA). This is a new combined PTA created by the merging of the Port Dickinson
Elementary school and Chenango Bridge Elementary school PTAs.
Through your involvement with the PTA, you can help strengthen the quality of life and education in the community. The PTA is a valuable
link between home and school, providing both with important information benefiting your child/children. In this association, you join
with parents, teachers, administrators, school board members and other citizens to enhance educational, health and safety, and cultural
opportunities for every child.
Representatives from the Southeastern Region and New York State PTA will be present to facilitate this meeting where we will vote on
our charter, vote on our bylaws, elect our officers and accept charter memberships so that our PTA unit can begin operating immediately.
Please come prepared with your membership dues ($5) so that our new PTA unit begins with a solid base from which to build on for the
future. We must have 25 charter members present in order to move forward.
The PTA is responsible for many of the events that students participate in each year, including the Sweetheart Dance, Mother-Son dance,
PARP and guest author visits, Field Day, Holiday Sales, Scholastic Book Fairs and much more.
We invite you to attend and take part in this special occasion and look forward to seeing you there!
Sincerely,
The Executive Boards of the Chenango Bridge and Port Dickinson PTA

Thanks to the generosity of the Hillcrest Rotary Club, 130 Port Dickinson preK students each received their own copy of a beautiful hardcover book, How Rocket Learned to Read. The children are encouraged to read the book over the summer. At the beginning of kindergarten in September, teachers will read the book to students in class. The book donation was coordinated by the Family Reading Partnership
of Broome County, which is working to give young children a strong foundation for learning and literacy. Thank you, Hillcrest Rotary!

CV Food Pantry receives diaper donation
The CV Food Pantry received a welcome donation of 3,000
diapers from a local non-profit organization that helps
mothers and young families. Kim Plant, of Mothers & More
Chapter 52, contacted Chenango Valley about making the
donation after her group hosted a diaper drive that netted
over 9,000 diapers.
One in three U.S. families struggles to afford diapers, and
government assistance programs typically do not help to
help pay for them. To help diminish this struggle, the Mothers & More local chapter hosted the diaper drive, “Make a
Mother’s Day” April 12-25, collecting diaper donations at
several Broome County Public Library locations.
The diapers were donated to CV’s Food Pantry and Catholic
Charities.

CV District News
Ice Cream Social brings CV community together
It was a perfect spring evening for the 23rd annual Ice Cream Social on June 3. Parents, neighbors and
friends attended the event on the lawn by the football field, where they listened to the elementary,
middle and high school bands perform, while enjoying ice cream and other treats. The Ice Cream
Social is a fund-raiser for BaCh of CV, which supports our music programs.
Student artwork displayed at DaVinci Festival
Several Chenango Valley students had their artwork on display at the Broome County Public Library as part of the DaVinci Festival Student
Art Show May 2-26. An opening reception was held May 2 for the event, which featured student artists from 12 area school districts.

Zach Wyatt makes state golf team
Updates from your CV Athletic Club (CVAC)
With our school year recently ending, the CV Athletic Club is
preparing for another year. We’ll be continuing our monthly
meetings over the summer and are in process of our membership drive and fall sports program development.
Zach Wyatt earned a birth on the Section IV state team by shooting
rounds of 83 and 75 in the Medalist Tournament at Cornell University’s
Robert Trent Jones Golf Course May 14 and 16. Zach’s round of 75 was
the low round in all of Section IV. He finished tied for 4th place in Section IV after this medalist tournament.
Zach is only the third player in CV history to make the NYS Section
IV team. In the first round at the state tournament, Zach fired a solid
round of 79 to put him in the top 30. In the second round, he shot an
84, which put him in 48th place out of the top 99 golfers in New York
State after completing 36 holes of golf.
Earlier in the season, Zach won the DiNunzio Tournament which had
every STAC golfer in the field, shooting a round of 73. Zach was a threeyear STAC All-Star and will be attending St. Vincent College in PA, where
he will playing golf for the college team.
Ethan Elliott named All-Division swimmer
The all-season Warrior Pass option for membership is available
again this year. This pass allows access to any regular season
home game where an admission fee is charged – excluding
playoff games (STAC/sectionals, etc.) or tournaments. When
presented at the ticket booth, the Warrior Pass will allow admission. This past year, membership and fundraising activities allowed
the club to support many financial requests, including girls
lacrosse, boys tennis, and the new baseball scoreboard! This
support also included non-athletic requests in an effort to assist our CV student community as well. We are proud that the
club was able to continue the tradition of presenting a $250
award for each of four seniors. Enclosed in this Newscaster is the membership form. Please
take a moment to become a member. Your membership
really does count – and we cannot support CV without your
involvement and membership.
Lastly, there is a new board in place. For the 2015-2016 school
year, the CVAC board members are:
Bill Phillips – President
Jennifer Morgan – co-Vice President
Meghan Morton – co-Vice President
Teresa Hatton – Secretary
April Rauscher – Treasurer
Harold Jones – Member at Large
Greg Beagell – Member at Large
Have a great summer!
Congratulations to Ethan Elliott, who was named as a STAC All-Division
swimmer earlier this year. Ethan’s name was inadvertently omitted
from a recent issue of the Newscaster.

HS Mixed Choir earns NYSSMA Gold Award
The CVHS Mixed Choir earned the New York State School
Music Association Gold Award, signifying “an outstanding level
of technical and artistic skill” based on its performance at the
NYSSMA Major Organization Festival held at Oneonta High
School on May 19.
Choruses are judged on a variety of criteria, including tone,
intonation, diction, vocal technique, and artistic interpretation
of the music. The choir was complimented on its “tone, blend
and balance, spirited performance and outstanding soloists.” The judges also noted the variety of musical selections, and
the large size of the performing group. One judge commented that if Chenango Valley’s Choir was an indication, choral

Triple Scoop of Thanks!
The BaCh of CV and the music department extend
their thanks to the CV community for supporting
the 23rd Annual Ice Cream Social and Band Concert.
The beautiful sunny weather was a perfect
backdrop for a fun-filled evening of music and
ice cream treats. CV families and friends relaxed
on the back lawn of the high school and enjoyed
the performance provided by the very talented
students in the CBE fifth and sixth-grade combined
Concert Band, the Middle School Band and the High
School Concert Band.
A TRIPLE SCOOP OF THANKS goes out to the organizers, the hardworking volunteers, those who contributed baked goods, and the
MS/HS custodial staff. Everyone worked tirelessly to help make the
evening run smoothly. It is this wonderful teamwork that made for a
successful event!

Elementary - Port Dickinson
June has flown by quickly at Port Dickinson and now we are gearing up for the 2015-2016 school year. The children
have been notified of their teacher for next year. It is going to be a big change for us this year without our thirdgrade class. They are going to be deeply missed.
We finished up the year with a very successful Flag Day celebration. Mrs. Carpenter and the students at Port Dickinson sang patriotic songs, waved flags and honored veterans, current members of the military, and law enforcement
officers. We also had our yearly Field Days. The children had fun playing games, going down the blow-up slides,
listening to music, but most of all watching the faculty Talent Show. It was a successful day for all.
Jim Pritchard, principal,
Port Dickinson Elem.
Also, this spring the Hillcrest Rotary -- in cooperation with the Family Reading Partnership of Broome County
-- made a special visit to our pre-K children. They gave each child a book entitled, “How Rocket Learned to Read.”
They donated 130 books to the school. On the first day of kindergarten, classrooms across the country will read
this book and will ignite the joy and passion of reading. This program is to promote a culture of literacy throughout
the country.
We have a lot of exciting programs for the upcoming school year. We have established an early kindergarten program, which will be
servicing those students who could benefit from another year to grow before kindergarten. Also, a full-day Head Start preschool program
serving the Chenango Valley Central School District will begin at Port Dickinson. This program will be open to students who are three years
of age before 12/1/15. If you would like more information, please call Head Start at 772-6810.
Just a reminder that we have posted a school supply list on the Chenango Valley website. We wish you all a very relaxing summer and will
see you in the fall.
- Jim Pritchard, Port Dickinson principal
Volunteers coordinate garden lesson & planting project
Community members Ed and Kay Corcoran volunteered to work with Mrs. Mercik’s, Mrs. Shelepak’s and Mrs. Voorhis’ second-graders on a
planting project at the Port Dick Children’s Garden. The Corcorans, who work with us each year, gave a lesson on seed germination, plant
parts and the plant cycle, and provided potting soil and seeds for the students to plant. Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Corcoran!

Flag Day 2015
Talent Show focused on
moving to Chenango Bridge
With third grade transitioning to Chenango Bridge
Elementary this fall, students in two grade levels at Port
Dickinson will be moving to CB this fall. With that in mind,
the theme for PD’s annual Talent Show was change and
moving. Teachers and staff performed funny skits and
musical numbers that had students giggling and singing
along. The stage set featured cardboard boxes marked
“Move to Chenango Bridge,” and there was even a moving
van that came down the aisle of the audience. It was a fun
way to assure students that change is a positive thing!

Elementary - Chenango Bridge
It has been an exciting, busy school year at Chenango Bridge Elementary. We have worked very hard academically, musically, and athletically, while building friendships and challenging ourselves to be the best we can be.
The faculty and staff at Chenango Bridge Elementary School would like to wish both our fifth and sixth-grade students the very best as they together transition to the Middle School for the 2015-16 school year. These students
have learned so much as students and as people in their elementary school years, and we are confident that they
will be successful in their transition to the Middle School.
Mary Beth Hammond,
Principal
Also, we are very excited to have a “brand new look” at Chenango Bridge Elementary School. It is so wonderful
that we are welcoming two new groups of students in the 2015-16 school year. Students in grades 3 and 4 will
begin an exciting learning adventure at Chenango Bridge. We know they will positively contribute to the learning
and friendships at our school.
It is so important to also recognize and extend a very warm “thank you” to three of our staff members who retired in June: Mrs. Catherine
Fitzgerald, grade 6 teacher; Mrs. Carol Craig, teacher aide; and Mr. Paul Snitchler, custodian. All three of these individuals have had a positive impact on our school and community. You will be missed very much.
There are many people who have made this school year successful. Thank you to our faculty, our staff, our families, and our students who
work each day collaboratively and positively for the betterment of our school. It is an honor and privilege to work in a terrific school and
community.
Have a fantastic summer with your family and friends. Enjoy the sunshine! Have fun! We’ll see you on Wednesday, September 9, 2015 for
the start of the 2015-16 school year.

The Chenango Bridge Elementary Chorus, directed by Angela Carpenter, had the honor of singing the national anthem at a recent Binghamton Mets game at NYSEG stadium. It was a beautiful spring evening and the students gave a fantastic performance!
3 selected as finalists in Invention Convention
Three CB students were selected as finalists in the 2015 New York State Invention Convention, an invention education program for public and private school
students in grades K-8. The goal is to stimulate the development of students’
creativity and imaginations, thereby building a new generation of American
inventors.
Garrett Anderson, Kendra Potenziano and Faith Riegal were honored at the
competition on June 6 at Binghamton University, where they had the opportunity to display their invention projects.
Pictured at right is Garrett Anderson, posing with his invention, a Lego sorter
that uses a funnel and camera to sort Legos by color into separate bins. Kendra
and Faith were unavailable for a photo.
Video wins again in “Let’s Move” campaign
CB physical education teacher Mrs. Price created a video to enter in the “Let’s Move It” campaign -- and received
third place for the entire New York State! The video also won last year’s competition. Overall, Mrs. Price’s efforts
have been rewarded with $1,500 for physical education equipment for our school. Thank you, Mrs. Price!

High School
The 2014-2015 school year has come to an end. Classes are finished, students have completed their local, Post–SLO,
and Regents exams, and the Class of 2015 has graduated. It has been a great school year, and it’s amazing how fast
the school year goes by. Time flies when you are having fun!
Students who have worked hard this year should be very proud of their achievements and accomplishments.
Chenango Valley students have excelled in the classroom, auditorium, on stage and on the athletic fields. CV students
make us very proud. I would like to thank Chenango Valley students, and especially the Senior Class for a tremendous
year. Well done! Parents should be very proud!
Terry Heller, principal
CV Senior High School
I would also like to thank some people who may go unnoticed throughout the year: the support staff, secretaries,
custodians, and maintenance workers who make the High School building run so well each day, week, month, and
year. Chenango Valley wouldn’t have such a successful school without the help of these folks! Thank you for all you
do for our students.
Have a great summer vacation. Get rested up for September. The first day of school will be here before you know it!

New Visions students compete at leadership summit in D.C.
Three CVHS New Visions Business Academy students were part of a
team chosen to compete in a three-day national student leadership
event in Washington, D.C. June 22-24.
The students, Jared Cornell, Ben Daniels and Zach Wyatt, were part of
a nine-member BOCES team that founded a company called 9 Roots
as part of their participation in the JA Company Program®, in which
high school students start and run a real business enterprise under the
guidance of a volunteer from the local business community. 9 Roots
sold nylon fleece blankets with a water resistant outer shell and an antipeeling fleece inner shell and cotton beanie hats embroidered with
“Helping Wishes Grow.”
At the event in Washington, a total of 15 teams were assessed on their
financial performance, individual team members’ personal and professional development, a self-produced commercial about their product
or service, their team’s live presentation to a panel of business leaders,
and on their company’s performance at an Entrepreneurship Expo on
Capitol Hill. It was a great experience and the culmination of much
hard work. Congratulations, Jared, Ben and Zach!

Engineering class tours Raymond
The High School Principles of Engineering class
toured Raymond Corp. in Greene, NY on April 30. The
tour, led by Mike Brown and Jim O’Brien, gave the
students an inside look at what goes on in a real-life
manufacturing facility.
Students toured the manufacturing floor and saw
how raw materials are transformed into a working
fork lift. Mike Brown showed the students a 3D CAD
model of a part and explained how the part is made
from the drawings and then how it is used in the fork
lift. Mike also discussed the type of engineers who
work at Raymond and talked about the high school
and college requirements to become an engineer.

Girls’ State Conference
Michaela Gay was selected for this year’s 2015 Girls’ State Conference held in June at SUNY Brockport.
Girls’ State is a hands-on workshop on government, the political process, and leadership. It is a non-partisan School of Government through which the American Legion Auxiliary attempts to educate young
women in the duties, rights, and responsibilities of American citizens.
Michaela Gay
In one week, the Girls’ State citizens build a government of a mythical 51st state, from the local to state
level. They participate in campaigns, rallies, speeches, platforms and various legislative committees,
as well as create bills. The students come as strangers and leave as friends, confident of their role and
duties as citizens in a democratic society. Congratulations Michaela and a special thank you to the
American Legion Auxiliary.
Boys’ State Conference
Cole Mace and Nick Pert were selected to represent CV at this year’s 2015 Boys’ State
conference held in June at SUNY Morrisville State College. Boys’ State is a week-long
Leadership Action Program, sponsored by the American Legion, where high school juniors
participate in a practical government experience designed to develop a working knowledge of the structure of government. Program objectives include developing civic leadership and pride in American citizenship, fostering a keen interest in the detailed study
of our government, encouraging young citizens a determination to maintain our form of
government and to develop an understanding of American traditions and a belief in the
United States.
Congratulations Cole and Nick and a special thank you to the American Legion for sponsoring these students.
