BULLDOGS
THE GAME
• The Wildcats will face Southern Conference-foe The Citadel for the first time in 30 years when they travel
to Charleston, S.C., for a 6 p.m. contest on Saturday.
• The Wildcats are 55-56-5 (.474) in season openers, including 16-38-2 on the road.
• Saturday’s game will mark the 57th meeting between the Wildcats and Bulldogs, which is Davidson’s
second longest running series (VMI - 58, The Citadel - 56, Furman - 54). In a series dating back to the 1909
season, The Citadel holds a record of 31-21-4 against Davidson.
• On Oct. 2, 1965, Davidson defeated The Citadel on the road, 14-0. Of the 40 living players from the 1965
squad, 34 will be in attendance on Saturday celebrating the 50th anniversary. Joined by two 1965 coaches,
the team will be dressed in red sitting right behind the team’s bench.
QUICK SLANTS
• Head Coach Paul Nichols (Davidson, ‘03) enters his third season as the program’s 27th head coach. • The Wildcats return 50 letterwinners, including 16 starters. Wide receiver William Morris and defensive
lineman Chris Woods, who are both senior captains, are Davidson’s top returnees.
• Davidson welcomes another large freshmen class this season, adding 34 to the 2015 roster. Last year,
the Wildcats welcomed their largest class of 36 since the 2009 season.
• Of the 34 newcomers, 15 are listed on defense, 18 are on offense and there’s one specialist.
• In addition to its 34 freshmen, Davidson welcomes five new members to the 2015 coaching staff.
Defensive line coach Will Windham (Mississippi State, ‘07), quarterbacks coach Jarrail Jackson (Oklahoma,
‘01), defensive analyst Nic Workman (Ohio Dominican, ‘14), offensive analyst Adam Pluta (Salem State, ‘15),
Director of Operations Nick Decker (Ohio State, ‘10) and Assistant Director of Operations Paul Smith (Western
New England, ‘13).
• Davidson also returns sophomore place-kicker Trevor Smith who was recently named to the Fred
Mitchell Award Watch List.

FIVE WILDCATS NAMED PRESEASON ALL-AMERICANS
Five Wildcats earned preseason All-American honors from USA College
Football this past July. Wide receiver William Morris was named a First-Team
Preseason All-American, while running back Jeffrey Keil, running back Austin
Wells, defensive lineman Chris Woods and place-kicker Trevor Smith were
named honorable mention Preseason All-Americans. Morris continued to
receive preseason honors as he was named to the STATS FCS Preseason AllAmerica Third Team and Preseason All-PFL First Team.
SMITH NAMED TO FRED MITCHELL AWARD WATCH LIST
Place-kicker Trevor Smith finished his rookie season ranked second on the
team in scoring with 55 points from 9-of-13 field goals and 28-of-29 PAT’s
that placed him on the Fred Mitchell Award Watch List. The Fred Mitchell
Outstanding Place-Kicker Award is given to the nation’s top collegiate placekicker among more than 750 FCS, Division II, III, NAIA and NJCAA football
teams. Smith also earned 2015 Preseason All-America Honorable Mention
honors by USA College Football.
MORRIS REWRITES THE RECORD BOOK IN 2014
Wide receiver William Morris enters his final season at Davidson at the top
of the leader board. The Dallas, Texas, native finished the 2014 season with a
school-record 1,224 yards receiving and 98 receptions, the most in a season
at Davidson. In the season finale against Valparaiso, Morris caught 10 passes
for 122 yards to finish with 1,224 yards receiving for the season that broke
a 44-year-old Davidson record, which was held by Mike Mikolayunas since
1970. Morris enters his senior campaign just 344 yards from matching the
program’s all-time receiving yards record.
NEW ADDITIONS TO STAFF
Head Coach Paul Nichols added five new members to his coaching staff
prior to the start of the 2015 season. Defensive line coach Will Windham
(Mississippi State, ’07) joined the Wildcat staff after a year at Penn State as a
graduate assistant. Quarterbacks coach Jarrail Jackson (Oklahoma, ’01) came
to Davidson after three seasons at Washington State with the most recent
title, Director of Player Relations. Defensive Analyst Nic Workman (Ohio
Dominican, ’14), offensive analyst Adam Pluta (Salem State, ’15), Director of
Football Operations Nick Decker (Ohio State, ’10) and Assistant Director of
Football Operations Paul Smith (Western New England, ‘13) are also in their
first season with the Wildcats.
EVERYWHERE A WILDCAT
Given that there are roughly 950 males at the school, about one in every 10
male students at Davidson plays football. Also, almost a quarter of Davidson’s
students are student-athletes.
DIFFICULT DECADE
In the 12 seasons since Nichols graduated, the Wildcats have tallied more
wins than losses just twice, and have been unable to match the 7-3 mark of
the 2002 team Nichols quarterbacked as a senior.

PAUL
NICHOLS
HEAD COACH
Third Season
Davidson, 2003
Paul Nichols ’03 is in his third season as the head
coach of his alma mater.
He was named to the post by Director of Athletics Jim
Murphy on Dec. 21, 2012, and is the program’s 27th
head coach.
In his second season, the Wildcats were led by wide
receiver William Morris on the All-PFL first team, while
freshman running back Jeffrey Keil was named PFL
Freshman Offensive Player of the Year. Davidson earned
its first Allstate Good Works Team honoree since 2010 as
linebacker Dan Casey was honored at the 2015 Sugar
Bowl.
In his first season, the Wildcats were led by Matt Casey
on the All-PFL team, had three representatives on the
Academic All-PFL team, and 39 players were named to
the PFL Academic Honor Roll. Additionally, wide receiver
William Morris ranked ninth in the nation in receiving
yards per game and Nichols’ punt return defense ranked
fourth in the nation.
Nichols, who was a coach at the Football Bowl
Subdivision level starting in 2004, is the second youngest
head coach in all of NCAA Division I football, born January
25, 1981.
In 2012, Nichols served as the director of player
personnel at Illinois. In that position, he coordinated oncampus recruiting efforts and relations with high school
coaches, among other duties, for former head coach Tim
Beckman and the Fighting Illini staff.
Prior to his time at Illinois, Nichols spent three
seasons on Beckman’s staff at Toledo as co-defensive
coordinator/safeties coach, where he played a vital role in
the transformation of the Rockets’ defense.
In 2011, Nichols helped guide the Rockets to a 9-4
record and a win over Air Force in the Military Bowl.
Toledo was 7-1 in the MAC and shared the West Division
title. Defensively, the Rockets forced 30 turnovers on
the season (ranking 16th nationally) and ranked third
nationally in turnover margin (+1.23). In 2010, UT
increased its forced turnovers from 21 to 34, the fifthhighest takeaway total in the nation, as the Rockets made
their first bowl appearance in five years.
Before making his way to Toledo, Nichols served as
an assistant at Marshall University for three seasons,
where he coached All-Conference USA safety Curtis Keyes
(2006) and All-Freshman cornerback Zearrick Matthews
(2006).
Prior to his tenure at Marshall, Nichols completed
two seasons as a graduate assistant at Ohio State from
2004-05 where he assisted with the defensive backs and
defensive line.
A native of Dunwoody, Ga., Nichols graduated from
Davidson College in 2003 with bachelor’s degrees in
political science and history. Nichols was a first-team
All-Pioneer League and a first-team Pioneer League AllAcademic selection as a senior, and was named honorable
mention All-America by Don Hansen’s Football Gazette.
In 2000, he quarterbacked Davidson to its first-andonly undefeated season.
Nichols departed as the school record holder for
career passing yards (5,822), completions (465) and
touchdown passes (51), and compiled a 22-6 record
as a starting quarterback. After seeing limited action
as a freshman, Nichols won the starting job prior to his
sophomore year and guided the ‘Cats to a 10-0 season.
His junior year was cut short by a knee injury, but Nichols
bounced back as a senior and matched the school record
for touchdown passes in a single season with 25.
Nichols now ranks third in passing yards and
completions after being surpassed by Ryan Alexander
’08 and Jonathan Carkhuff ‘14. He is also now second
to Alexander in career passing touchdowns, with Carkhuff
needing just six more touchdown passes to move past
Nichols in that category.
Nichols is the first Davidson alumnus to guide the
football program on a full-time basis since Dave Fagg ’58,
who finished his second coaching stint with the Wildcats
following the 1992 season. He joins Matt Spear ’93
(men’s soccer) as the only other Davidson alum currently
serving as a head coach at Davidson.
Nichols and his wife, the former Lauran Lightmas, a
2004 graduate of Davidson, have two sons, Drew and
Jack.
