Christmas Eve
Ux{ÉÄwA What a strange old word.
Saturday, December 24
To behold something is to perceive something
with our eyes or our heart. It is to hold onto
something in our field of vision. How often do we really take time out of our
busy lives to stop and stare and ponder with wonder at the presence of
Christ in our lives? Advent is a time to take notice of Christ’s entry into the
world – a long time ago, but also each and every day. Advent is not so
much a season to prepare parties and packages, as it is time to prepare our
hearts and eyes and minds to behold Christ.
Over the next four weeks, we will be looking at different ways we
prepare to behold the love of Christ in our lives. First, we must be awake to
the ancient promise of God’s revealing love. Second, we must be the Way
to Christ for others by bringing God’s comfort and sharing the Good News.
Third, we must be open to the workings of the Holy Spirit as God brings
light and justice to a very dark and troubled world. Next, we must be
appropriately fearless as we seek to magnify God’s love with our lives,
confident that God is in our midst and that God’s grace will never leave us.
Finally, we are called to be named as followers and imitators of Christ,
prepared to bring hope to a world that has forgotten that the ever-speaking,
ever-creating God is always with us.
As we begin this Season to Behold, you will have an opportunity to take
home a stack of invitational cards that provide basic information and times
about our special Advent and Christmas services. Please share these cards
with friends, neighbors, and colleagues as you invite them to church. I
know that asking people to come to church may be somewhat
uncomfortable for many of us, but there are probably people you know who
are just waiting to be asked. I also know that, in sharing this special season
with others, you will be richly blessed. This Advent, may you behold the
love God has for all of us.

If you’ve ever thought of taking Disciple, come learn
more at our information session! Reading 70% of the
Bible from Genesis to Revelation and discussing it in a
small group, discover how all those Bible stories many
of us learned when we were young tie into one big
story about God’s relationship with us. The class
provides a strong foundation for thinking about what
we individually believe, answering questions, making
new friends … and lots more. Homework: 20-30
minutes per night. Books-$34 or $1/week; Led by
Nancy Fidler & Brenda Younker. ** Childcare is
available.
FAITH & FRIENDS: SPIRITUAL GROWTH STUDY;
ROOM 132: Beginning December 4, for three weeks,
we will discuss Love Wins by Rob Bell. Dave King will
coordinate the leadership of these classes. There should
be some lively discussions since people have different
views on the book. Remember the Wesleyan
quadrilateral we have learned about recently! We all
come to Scripture with different experiences, traditions
and reasoning – so it makes sense, we would have
some different views. Hopefully, we can all learn
something from each other. Each lesson can stand
alone, so drop-in any Sunday - you are always
welcome! Coordinators: Nancy Fidler and Fran King.

STAFF PARISH ANNOUNCEMENT
As you are probably aware, the Staff Parish Relations Committee recently accepted the resignation
of Rev. Linda Cochran as Director of Christian Education. Rev. Cochran has been dealing with the
aftermath of a car accident she and her family had this summer just prior to the time Linda joined
St. Paul’s. This situation has made it impossible for her to continue to serve our congregation. We
continue to pass along our prayers and warm thoughts for Linda and her family in the days ahead.
As I mentioned on Sunday, November 13, we're very pleased to announce two new appointments
to the Christian Education staff at St. Paul's.
We welcome Andrea Langhoff to the position of Director of Youth Ministries, and Amy Heitman to
the position of Director of Children’s Ministries. Andrea and Amy are already up and running in their
respective positions. Please formally welcome them to the St. Paul’s staff. We’re happy to have them on
board. ~ Tom Talbert, Staff Parish Relations
Andrea Langhoff
Director of Youth Ministry
Andrea became a member of the St. Paul’s family in October 2009 after moving to
Rochester earlier that summer. St. Paul’s was a great fit for Andrea from the start;
she is a member of the Epworth Choir and has worked alongside the wonderful High
School Youth Group volunteers since her arrival. Andrea was born and raised in
Athens, Wisconsin growing in faith at Trinity Lutheran. After working towards a
degree in Recreation Management at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse she
became a nanny for a family in Delaware in August 2008; where she regularly
attended Newark United Methodist Church. With the change in the auto industry the
nanny-family moved to Michigan and asked Andrea to join. She is elated to continue
to provide compassionate child care for her nanny-family while moving forward with
St. Paul’s terrific Youth Ministry programming. Andrea also plans to continue her
education to grow as a servant of our Lord.
Amy Heitman
Director of Children’s Ministry
Amy and her husband, Jamie, joined St. Paul’s in May of 2000 when their first
daughter, Lilly, was baptized. They were drawn to the church even before they
started their family because of the wonderful children’s programs that were offered.
Amy grew up in the First Presbyterian Church in Fenton, Michigan, living in Fenton
until she left for her undergraduate work at Albion College. Amy is a certified
elementary school teacher and spent seven years teaching in Holly, Michigan while
earning her M.A.T. from Oakland University. Amy and Jamie have lived in
Rochester for fifteen years and are the proud parents of two daughters, Lilly and
Annie.
