PLANNING YOUR GRADE 1 YEAR
Addison Wesley Math Makes Sense 1 accommodates
these planning needs:
• Each strand is addressed with a major
emphasis at least twice through the school
year, to provide a rich variety of math
experiences for students and to accommodate
provincial reporting requirements.
• All units can be completed in about 30 weeks
—depending on the needs of the class—to
accommodate the normal interruptions that
occur during a regular 36-week school year.
Some teachers prefer to plan their own
sequence of topics through the school year. At
grade 1, because of the developmental
introduction of number concepts across the
program, it is not recommended that the
program be delivered in a different order.
However, once you have taught the units in
sequence and become familiar with the content
detail in each unit, you will be able to
determine if a different teaching order is
appropriate for you.
• The grade 1 program aligns, unit by unit,
with the grade 2 program, to support
teaching of combined grades.

Unit Planning
An overall suggested time of 20 to 100 min has
been included beside the Activity Bank choices
for each lesson. This range is dependent on
how many of the Activity Bank choices you
select. Your choices will be based on
• Children’s previous experience with concepts
• Your observations during whole-group
instruction, small group performance during
the Explore section of the lesson, and aspects
of the lesson that appear to be challenging

You might consider the following criteria when
making your selections:
• If your students are familiar with the concept
and demonstrate understanding, select one
Activity Bank of high interest.
• If your students have little previous
experience with the concept, and find some
aspects of the concept challenging, select 2 or
3 Activity Banks for reteaching and
reinforcement of the key learning.
• If your students require considerable
support, select 2 or 3 Activity Banks for
additional practice and reinforcement.

Investigation
Each unit begins with a Planning for Instruction
chart, illustrating the content and activity choices
within each unit. Suggested teaching times are
included with each unit, lesson, and cluster of
activity banks, recognizing that you may want to
spend more or less time on a lesson depending
on the needs and interests of your students.
