President’s Message:
JOIN US FOR THE MUNI’S 2015 SEASON!
H
APPY NEW YEAR! 2015 will be an exciting year
at the Springfield Muni Opera as four teams of
talented directors and staff bring you a season
of magical musicals under the stars. This year’s Muni
season truly has something for everyone.
Join us in June for uproarious laughs at Monty
Python’s SPAMALOT, a cockeyed look at the
legends of King Arthur, directed by Mac Warren.
Anyone who is young at heart will be enchanted
by Horton, Jojo, Gertrude and the other fantastical
characters in SeussicalTM, our July show, directed
by Stephan Kaplan and Dennis O’Brien. The beautiful
melodies and breathtaking dance numbers of
West Side Story, directed by Anna Bussing, will
mesmerize audiences in August. Finally, in September,
director Rich McCoy will transform the Muni stage
into pre-World War II Berlin for Cabaret, one of
Broadway’s most popular productions.
Even though our season doesn’t begin until June,
now is a very busy time for The Muni because we are
putting together staff, creating production designs,
and getting ready for auditions. Most of this edition
of Sightlines is dedicated to the auditions process:
information on the shows, parts available, how to
sign up to audition, and information on auditions
themselves. Our website (www.themuni.org)
also contains a wealth of information regarding
auditions; later in February, aspiring auditionees can
go to the website to register to audition and to select
an audition time.
In addition, here in Sightlines and on the website,
you’ll find information about our auditions workshop.
Experienced and new performers alike will find the
workshop a valuable venue to talk to the directors,
learn about the auditions process, and get tips for
giving a successful audition. It’s also a fun opportunity
to see other “Muni-ites” and catch up with friends.
If you’re like me and prefer to be a part of The Muni
without going on stage, you’ll learn about volunteer
opportunities at the workshop as well. Muni is proud
of its tradition as an all-volunteer organization; it
offers people of all ages an opportunity to participate
and encourage the arts. Muni volunteers build and

paint sets, pop popcorn, usher patrons to their seats,
sew costumes, help with landscaping – just about
anything you can imagine. Our website also provides
information about volunteering and a convenient
on-line form with which you can sign up to volunteer at
The Muni.
2015 SEASON:
Another way to support the Muni and the arts in
Springfield is to become a Muni Backstager. Through
their financial contributions, Backstagers help The Muni
maintain its standard of excellence in musical theatre
at a site that is verdant and family-friendly. Backstagers
enjoy several special ‘perks’, including premium
parking, a season kick-off picnic, and a sneak peak at
our first show, Monty Python’s SPAMALOT. For more
information, visit the Muni website or ask any member
of the Muni Board of Managers.
COUNTY AUDITOR PAUL PALAZZOLO presents
As I said, The Muni provides art and entertainment for
all ages, and our Thursday performances offer special
pricing for children and seniors. We also offer a senior
bus package that includes a charter bus ride to and
from The Muni, in addition to show admission and
refreshments. Details are on the Muni website.
MCGLADREY presents
Finally, as the 2015 Muni President, I would like to
give special recognition to the four show sponsors
for the coming season: County Auditor
Paul Palazzolo (Monty Python’s SPAMALOT),
McGladrey (SeussicalTM), Springfield Clinic
(West Side Story), and Illini Bank (Cabaret). Their
generosity and support make our season possible. On
behalf of the entire Muni community - thank you!

[Muni Debut] A hilarious musical farce full of multiple
casting opportunities!
Lovingly ripped off from the classic film comedy
Monty Python & The Holy Grail, SPAMALOT retells the
legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round
Table, and features a bevy of beautiful show girls, not
to mention cows, killer rabbits and French people. Did
we mention the bevy of beautiful show girls?
DIRECTOR’S NOTES: All characters have British
accents; be prepared to read accordingly. It is strongly
suggested that those auditioning for SPAMALOT
be familiar with the music from the musical and
movie. Ages listed serve as a guide. Some character
doublings may be changed based on production
needs. In tribute to the film (where 6 actors played
most male, and a few female, parts) several actors
play multiple roles. The only characters not doubling
are King Arthur, Lady of the Lake, and Patsy. Most
ensemble members play 5-6 roles.
PARTS AVAILABLE:
Auditionees for Monty Python’s
SPAMALOT must take part in either the
“Movement” or “Dance” portion of
auditions; characters requiring “Dance”
have been noted below.
King Arthur: (Baritone / Age Late 30s-60s) The
King of England who sets out on a quest to form the
Knights of the Roundtable and find the Holy Grail.
Great Humor. Good singer. Range: Low G2 - High F4.
The Lady of the Lake: (Alto with Large Range /
Age 20s-40s) A Diva. Strong, beautiful, possesses
mystical powers. The leading lady of the show. Great
singing voice is essential, as she must be able to sing
effortlessly in many styles and vocal registers. Sings
everything from opera to pop to scatting. Range: Low
E3 – High B6.
Sir Lancelot: (Tenor/Baritone / Dance / Age 20s-40s)
A Knight of the Roundtable. He is fearless to a bloody
fault but through a twist of fate, does discover his ‘softer
side.’ This actor MUST be great with character voices
and accents, as he also plays The French Taunter, an
arrogant, condescending, over-the-top Frenchman; the
Knight of Ni, an absurd, cartoonish leader of a peculiar
group of Knights; and Tim the Enchanter, a ghostly being
with a Scottish accent. Range: Low C3 – High E4.
Patsy: (Tenor/Baritone / Dance / Age 30s-40s) King
Arthur’s horse and servant. Underappreciated but always
longing for King Arthur’s approval. Good, funny, physical
mover with some tap dancing. Range: Low Bb3 – High
G5.
Sir Bedevere / Mayor Finland: (Tenor/Baritone
with Falsetto / Dance / Age 20s-40s) A Knight of
the Roundtable. An inept scholar. Also plays Dennis
Galahad’s Mother, a shrill peasant woman, and
Concorde, Sir Lancelot’s horse. Range: Low D3 –
High G4.
Historian / Not Dead Fred / Prince Herbert / Minstrel /
French Guard: (Tenor / Dance / Age 20s-30s) A tweedy
academic. Also plays Not Dead Fred, a sickly little
fellow who, despite others’ beliefs, claims he is “not yet
dead”; a French Guard, the condemnatory sidekick to
the French Taunter; a Minstrel in Sir Robin’s band; and
Prince Herbert, the hopeful and frilly prince who loves
to sing and pines for his love atop a tower. Tenor singing
required. Very good mover. Range: Low A2 – High A5.
Male Ensemble (6 Men): (Mixed Vocals / Dance / All
Ages) Seeking strong dancers and singers to play many
roles including the other Knights of the Round Table,
Mayor of Finland, Guard 2, Sir Not Appearing, Sir
Bohrs, Bodies in “Not Yet Dead,” the Dancing Monk, the
Dancing Nun, French Citizens, Finland Citizens, a French
Guard, Robin’s Minstrel, and more. Strong dance skills
preferred; tap skills a bonus.
Female Ensemble (6+ Women): (Mixed Vocals / Dance
/ All Ages) These women play many roles including the
Camelot Girls, the Laker Girls, a French Guard, Knights
of Ni, two of Robin’s Minstrels, French Citizens, Finland
Citizens, and more. Strong dance and tap skills.

A family-friendly show with performers of all ages and
sizes!
“Oh, the thinks you can think” when Dr. Seuss’s
best-loved characters - led by The Cat in the Hat collide and cavort in an unforgettable musical caper
for all-ages. SeussicalTM tells the story of Horton, an
elephant who discovers a speck of dust containing
Whos, including Jojo, a Who child sent off to military
school for thinking too many “thinks.” Horton faces a
double challenge - not only must he protect the Whos
from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must
also guard an abandoned egg, left to his care by the
dazzling but irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although
Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial,
the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him.
DIRECTORS’ NOTES: Approximately 10-12 children
will be cast in SeussicalTM through the Children’s
Auditions*. The part of Jojo may be cast from either
Adult or Children’s Auditions; both children and teens
of either gender will be considered for this role.
A number of performers play several characters;
descriptions below are based on the primary
characters. All character ages are “stage ages”, the
age the actor appears on stage.
PARTS AVAILABLE:
Auditionees for SeussicalTM must take part
in either the “Movement” or “Dance”
portion of auditions; characters requiring
“Dance” have been noted below.
The Cat in the Hat: (Tenor/Baritone / Dance / Age 1630) The show’s mischievous but benevolent narrator
and emcee. Loose-limbed with excellent comedic
timing and athletic propensities. The Cat’s main
objective is to have fun stirring things up, always to a
good end. Strong vocals required.

“SeussicalTM” Cont’d...
Our story’s main character who is a compassionate,
slow-moving gentle giant commonly misunderstood
because of his larger size. A contemplative thinker,
he is protective and loving of all the creatures in the
jungle.
Gertrude McFuzz: (Soprano / Dance /Age 20-35)
Horton’s sweet but timid one-feathered-tail bird
neighbor. Self-conscious of her shortfalls, she’s
socially and physically awkward… a little off-beat but
delightfully so. Looking to win Horton’s attention and
affection.
Mayzie LaBird: (Mezzo/ Dance / Age 25-35) The most
beautiful and self-centered bird in all the jungle. She
relies on her talent for manipulation and intoxicating
beauty to navigate her way through life. A tropical
dancer (along with her Bird Girls), she’s the hottest
act around. Strong dance skills required.
The Sour Kangaroo: (Alto / Age 30-45) The
soulful and sassy diva queen of the jungle, with a
commanding physical presence. She is loud, brassy
and stubbornly set in her ways. Caring mother to Roo.
Bird Girls (3 Women): (Mixed Vocals / Dance / Age
17-35) Mayzie’s flamboyant back-up performers, these
beautiful birds live to sing, dance, perform and flirt.
Trio dances in tight synchronization (Latin, nightclub
and Motown styles.) Strong dance skills required.
Wickersham Brothers (3 Men): (Mixed Vocals/
Dance / Age 17-35) Impulsive bad boys who like
to “monkey” around, these macho brothers are the
henchmen for the powerful Sour Kangaroo. They pride
themselves on their agility, speed and cunning nature.
Must have good athletic ability.
Mr. Mayor: (Tenor/ Baritone / Age 30-50) As the
leader of the Whos, he likes his world to be tidy and
predictable, at odds with his child Jojo’s troubling antics.
Mrs. Mayor: (Soprano / Age 30-50) Above all else, she
wants to be a good wife and mother. Like her husband,
she’s at her wits end with Jojo and worries about not
knowing how to best care for their “different” child.
General Genghis Khan Schmitz: (Baritone / Age 30-65)
A military instructor and old-world soldier past his
prime. Believes in values of militaristic regimentation,
conformity, physical training, and following orders
without question. Commands attention with a loud voice
and intimidating presence.
The Grinch: (Baritone/Bass / Age 25-45) Now a happy
member of the Who community, this green beast once
lived angrily apart and disrupted the pleasantry of the
Whos.
*Who Ensemble – Citizens and *Military Cadets (8-12
Adults / 10 Children): (Mixed Vocals / Dance / All Ages)
The Whos are innocent, slightly quirky people who value
conformity and clean living. They want to keep the status
quo, which means keeping the planet safe, their bread
butter side-up, and their lives tidy and predictable. Some
kids – like Cindy Loo and Cindy Too – are perfect as their
parents expect them to be. Others – like Jojo – often end
up under the General’s rule in the military. Their straight
and proper carriage is interspersed with whimsical,
off-center and quirky movements. Cadets must be able to
execute unison movement.
West Side Story —
Presented by Springfield Clinic
Jungle Animal Ensemble (8-12 Adults): (Mixed Vocals
/ Dance / All Ages) Street-smart creatures that live
by the laws of the jungle, the animals follow the
powerful Kangaroo without question and do not cross
the Wickershams. Each has individual movement
and character traits that distinguish them from one
another. Must be strong, expressive dancers.
WHOVILLE CHARACTERS
*Jojo: (Strong Vocals / Child or Teenager) Male or
Female role. The Mayor’s kid, he/she is a Who that
stands out in a world that values conformity. Always
in trouble, Jojo is bright, creative and possesses a wild
imagination. Finds solace in his/her friendship with
Horton.

“What good is sitting alone in your room, come hear the
music play!” Set in Berlin just as the Nazis are rising

Sally Bowles, headliner at the Kit Kat Klub, and Cliff

action is the Emcee, who assures the audience that
despite tumultuous times, all troubles are forgotten

decadent period just before the dark days of WWII.
