At this time of year the Northern Hemisphere brings us
darker days and colder temperatures. We yearn for physical
light and warmth. We also long for its spiritual counterparts,
the light of God’s Word and the warmth of God’s love.
At sunset on Saturday the 2015 Church Year began. So,
Happy New Year! What will the new Church Year have in
store for us? It will be a year of grace and transformation,
personally and communally. We will mark the year with
holy seasons. First we celebrate the feast days of the
Advent-Christmastide seasons. Sundays are feast days. So
are Holy Days, like the Immaculate Conception of Mary, the
Nativity of the LORD, the Holy Family, and more. Cardinal
Donald Wuerl of Washington D.C. says, “Feast days are to
time what churches are to space. They mark sacred
moments, moments of grace. They form us. Keeping the
feasts is part of one’s commitment to live as a child of God.”
This Church year has a new set of Scripture readings,
cycle B. The Sunday gospel readings of 2015 will be selections from the evangelist, Saint Mark. Through Mark,
the Church starts us off with Jesus’ admonition to “Be
watchful! Be alert!” Why? The lyrics of one of my favorite
Advent hymns give the answer.
People, look East and sing today: Love, the guest,
is on the way.
People, look East and sing today: Love, the LORD,
is on the way.
Our Savior is near. We want to welcome him. The focus of the
entire Advent season is on preparing to welcome our guest.
The traditional spiritual practices are prayer, fasting, and acts
of generosity.
Personal prayer is central. The more time spent praying,
both privately and communally, the closer to Jesus we grow.
The more Christ like we become, the easier it is to make sacrifices and to be generous. Good Advent-Christmas reading can
inspire our prayers and sacrifices. My suggestion:
Scott Hahn’s Joy to the World: How Christ’s Coming Changed
Everything (and Still Does). Also the prayer ideas in the bulletin
of the 16th, inspired by Msgr. Vincent Rush, can be used not
only before Mass, but anytime. Let’s pray for one another.

Reflexionemos sobre la Palabra de Dios
En estos momentos estoy viviendo en un
convento parroquial que ha servido de domicilio
por más de un centenar de años a las hermanas
que una vez enseñaron en la escuela primaria de
la parroquia. Como cualquier casa antigua hay
chirridos, repiqueteos y chasquidos, que se oyen
o repercuten en la noche pero parecen desaparecer por el día. Y como todos las que vivimos aquí
somos adultos decimos que esos ruidos se deben
sólo a que es una casa antigua yéndose a su
lecho a dormir –eso lo decimos hasta que uno de
nosotros se encuentra solo en la casa por la
noche. Cuando los otros regresan nos apuramos
a contarles que la Madre Carolina había estado
levantada y caminando de nuevo. La noche hace
que nuestra imaginación se vuelva loca y nos
haga actuar y pensar como los niños.
La noche se las arregla para alardear de
ruidos aterradores y para darnos ansiedad con
misterios inexplicables. Y cuando no sólo nuestro
cuerpo sino también nuestra propia vida se
encuentran en la oscuridad, cuando no sabemos
cuál es la mejor manera de disciplinar a nuestros
hijos, ni hacia dónde dirigirnos el resto de nuestra
vida, ni siquiera cómo manejar una relación,
bueno, esa oscuridad se nos hace demasiado y
puede parecernos inaguantable.
Nunca estamos completamente seguros
de los misterios inexplicables que nuestro Dios
puede hacer surgir de la oscuridad. Por eso es
posible que nosotros, cada uno de su propia y
loca manera, tratamos de hacer amistad con los
ruidos de la oscuridad. Decimos que son los ruidos de una casa antigua, o la temperatura que
está bajando o el horno que se ha activado, o decimos que es la Madre Carolina. De una manera
u otra encontramos la manera de convivir con la
oscuridad, pues, ¿quién sabe lo que Dios, nuestro divino alfarero de la lectura de Isaías, pudiera
hacer aun con el barro húmedo de nuestra vida?—

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS
Today is the first day of Advent, and all of us know that the Season of Advent is the time
of preparation for the pending birth of our Lord. We Roman Catholics celebrate the birth of
Jesus on December 25th, although this may not be the actual day of the Lord’s birth, ancient
Christians saw fit to set aside a day of celebration to observe that glorious and Holy day. The
pagan Roman holiday of Saturnalia was also on the same day. With the ongoing persecution of
Christians occurring during this period, it would appear that they chose that day, so they could
celebrate the birth of the Lord surreptitiously, with nobody being the wiser. The Church has
denied that this is so, and we, as devout Catholics should make note of the Church’s teaching
on the subject, however who would fault the ancient Christians if they did “camouflage” their
celebration, since they were being persecuted and even martyred for their beliefs. At any rate, let
us enjoy the present day of freedom to observe Advent, and remember that it’s all about the
birth of the Lord, our Savior.
We wish to thank those parishioners who supported us at our Dinner/Dance Fiesta last
evening; we trust that everyone had a wonderful time; it was a great opportunity to mix with our
fellow parishioners as we enjoyed the great food and glorious music by our very own musicians,
Los Compadres Musicales de San Patricio. You have our heartfelt gratitude because your
great generosity has supplied us with further funds to carry out our mission of charity in this
beautiful community that we call home.
Brother Knights, we remind you that next Thursday evening, December 4th, we will be
holding our monthly Business Dinner Meeting in Gurnell Hall, starting around 5:00. Dinner
will be served at 6:30. The business meeting will start promptly at 7:30. I urge you to come
spend time with your Brother Knights and join in the camaraderie.

THE CHRISTMAS GIVING TREE
The Gift Giving Tree is now in the vestibule and
it’s brimming with tags. The tags vary...you
can give to one child or several children in a
family...whatever you are able to do is wonderful. Please return the tag on an unwrapped
gift before Saturday, December 13th. You
may place the unwrapped gifts in the large
box in the Gift Shop during the
week end Masses or drop them off
at the church office, Monday — Friday, 8:00 AM-noon. Please call the
office if you have any questions.
MESSAGE FROM THE BUSINESS MANAGER…
It’s a very busy, busy time here at Saint Patrick Church. The Hispanic community planted
daffodils at the cemetery this last weekend. Thank you to all who donated the daffodils and most
especially, those who planted them. It’s going to be beautiful this spring!
Please look in the mail for your Christmas mailer, which includes our Advent and Christmas
schedule.
It’s been brought to my attention that I have not thanked the Gift Shop volunteers lately for the
work they do at Saint Patrick. The Gift Shop supports the church as well as provides a service to our
parishioners. It takes commitment from all the volunteers to keep the shop running and their willingness to serve the parish is most appreciated.

MESSAGE TO OUR HEARING IMPAIRED PARISHIONERS
Saint Patrick is pleased to announce the completion of our Loop installation for the hearing impaired. This is a direct audio input-signal, which provides a clearer and more distinct sound,
and one which is directly streamed into a parishioner’s hearing aids. The vast majority of hearing aids, old and new, were built with this feature already installed. It is only a matter of having
the feature activated by your hearing health care professional. The blue signs placed near the
doors will be an on-going reminder to our current parishioners, as well as those visiting our
church, that they may access our new loop system. If there are questions about utilizing this
system please call Sandy Danz @ (530) 409-0774.

Asociacion Guadalupana Tamale Event! The cost of tamales is $10.00 for 6 tamales
and $20.00 for 12 tamales. The four varieties are chicken, pork, beef and cheese.

Masses: Are held on Sundays at 10:00 a.m. Dates and times for Holy Day Masses and Special
Observances will be published separately.
Holy Day of Obligation: The Mass of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Mass at St. James is at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, December 8th.
Confessions: Are held directly before Mass each Sunday beginning at 9:00 a.m.
St. James Society Meetings: Monthly meetings of the St. James Society are held directly after Mass on the second Sunday of each month. If you wish to address the Board or have an item
placed on the agenda, it must be received by our President Lisa Patterson in writing no later
than the Friday before the meeting at 333.2292 or [email protected].
Donut Sunday: The first Sunday of the month is also "Donut Sunday". For a donation of only $1.00
you can enjoy a fresh delicious donut. All proceeds benefit the St. James Faith Formation.
Blanket Sunday: The first Sunday of each month is “Blanket Sunday”. Donations of nonperishable food items or new or gently used blankets are gratefully accepted by Carmen Krizl. All
donations benefit those in need right here on the Divide.
Baked Goodies: are available on the third Sunday of each month, after Mass – all donations also
benefit the St. James Faith Formation.
Breakfast: Is served the fourth Sunday of each month. For just $4.00 per person or $12.00 for
families you can fill up on a delicious full breakfast while you enjoy the company of your friends
and fellow parishioners.
Cleaning Crew: Meets the third Saturday of each month here at St. James between 10:30 and
11:00 a.m. Please see Mike Weycker if you are interested in helping.
Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament: Is held each Wednesday from 3:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. here
at St. James. Prayer requests written in the ledger in the foyer are acted upon each week. Please
contact Mark Spaugh if you have questions.
Scrip: A wide variety of popular gift cards are available each Sunday after Mass in Mathias Hall.
