Qualitative Findings:
Surveyor “General Impressions”
Anything about the tailgate that concerns you?
• No major concerns.
• Yes, that drinking games are allowed. I don't know if it was
because of a much older crowd, but there weren’t that many
drinking games as I thought there would be. I thought
parking management seemed very disorganized, there was
lots of confusion, which could have resulted in an accident.
• PD/security did not circle lots but employed security towers
to observe activities from above. Overall, very relaxed
environment with greater focus on elaborate BBQ setups
than a UCLA football game. Only 1 keg observed and it was
dealt with immediately. Lots cleared before game start.
In what ways does event staff/law enforcement
appear to be taking precautions in tailgate areas?
• There was a strong presence of PD on bikes, horses, in
cars, and walking in the lots. PD had a good relationship
with fans. They seem very respectful of each other.
• Security and PD should be more evently dispersed
among all the lots. Lot A had a visible PD/Security
presence but other lots appeared to have no
PD/Security at all.
• Moto PD observed circling/clearing all lots 10-15 min
before game start. Security observed stopping keg stand
and keg use at the beginning of the game.
In your opinion, what could be done to improve safety
at the event?
• Funnel policy: observed several in use, and someone
selling them in the aisles (2 for $20)
Other Comments/Feedback?
• Staff, security and police were friendly and helpful on
several occassions. For the most part fans and
enforcement see well aware of the guidelines. Was
surprised that most people, almost all, entered game
with tickets (did not show up just to tailgate).
• Surprisingly low key tailgate. Parking receipt included
prevention messaging and tailgating rules. Tailgating
handout/guidelines was in English and Spanish, received
upon parking payment.
