PASTOR’S CORNER
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
We have come to the end of the Church’s Liturgical Year. Next Sunday we begin Advent, the time of preparation
for the Coming of Christ. Today is the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. Jesus is king
like no other. While he walked the earth 2000 years ago he had only simple clothes on his back. He did not
have a palace or royal entourage. His closest friends were fishermen and tax collectors. In today’s Gospel (John
18:33-37) Jesus is on trial for his life. Pilate asks if he is the King of the Jews. Instead of a direct answer, Jesus
asks Pilate whether this is his question or what others are saying about him. It may not look like it but Jesus
is in charge. Jesus tells Pilate that his kingdom is not here. Jesus avoids the title “king” and instead tells Pilate
that he came into the world to testify to the truth: “Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.”
(John 18:37)
Are we listening to the voice of truth, the voice of Jesus the Universal King? What does Jesus say to us? From
the Cross Jesus gives his Mother to the Beloved Disciple, “Woman, behold your son…Behold, your Mother. And
from that hour the disciple took her into his home.” Blessed Mother Mary guides us to her Son if we bring her
into our home and into our lives. Then Jesus says, “I thirst.” Jesus thirsts for our souls. He wants us to be with
him forever. Saint Augustine said it well when he prayed: “God, you have made us for yourself, and our hearts
are restless until they find their rest in you.”
If we want to see Jesus on his throne, look to the Cross. Here is his earthly throne. This throne is more
magnificent than any other. On this throne, Jesus has forgiven the sins of the world. On this throne Jesus gave
us his Body and his Blood. This instrument of torture and death becomes the instrument ushering in eternal
life. Jesus crowned with thorns, crowns us with everlasting life.
Today just before we sing the “Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts…” The priest will pray to God the Father,
the following Preface:
It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, holy
Father, almighty and eternal God. For you anointed your Only Begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, with the
oil of gladness as eternal Priest and King of all creation, so that, by offering himself on the altar of the Cross as
a spotless sacrifice to bring us peace, he might accomplish the mysteries of human redemption and, making all
created things subject to his rule, he might present to the immensity of your majesty an eternal and universal
kingdom, a kingdom of truth and life, a kingdom of holiness and grace, a kingdom of justice, love and peace.
And so, with Angels and Archangels, with Thrones and Dominions, and with all the hosts and Powers of heaven,
we sing the hymn of your glory, as without end we acclaim:
May this be our prayer of thanksgiving to God the Father for giving us his beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to lead us
to his eternal Kingdom.

RENEW  REJUVENATE  REBUILD
Our Faith, Our Parish,
Our Church
“Reflection on the faith will have to be
intensified so as to help believers to acquire
a more conscious and vigorous adherence to
the Gospel, especially at a time of profound
change such as humanity is experiencing.”
—Pope Benedict XVI, Apostolic Letter Porta
Fidei
Dear Parishioners,
Included with the many resources available to us for the Year of
Faith, we are offering as a spiritual companion a special book
appropriately titled The Gift of Faith. In the words of Cardinal
McCarrick, Archbishop Emeritus of Washington, this is a book that
may help us to “draw closer to the more complete reality of our
existence and our journey.”
In his foreword to this book, the Cardinal also mentions: “I would
consider this book, The Gift of Faith, as a special gift of our time that
will help the faithful to experience the renewal of their own faith. The
Gift of Faith makes us search for the deeper, spiritual meaning of our
Life Journey and provides a new building block in the development
of a deeper inner spirituality.”
This excellent book is now being offered at St.Bonaventure parish
for the Year of Faith by the Families of Nazareth Movement. The
purchase of The Gift of Faith book, which has been referred to as a
“mini-catechism,” is a “double gift” because not only will its insights
into the thinking of the saints, and its real-life examples of applying
Gospel values, enrich our faith life, but the price will also contribute
to the fund-raising for our church building.
The Gift of Faith is being made available for $18 per copy, payable
to St. Bonaventure.
Prepaid orders will be taken in the parish center.
The books will be available for pick-up approximately middle of
December 2012.
For more info contact Andree Wagatha, [email protected],
812-0609, or Mary Jane Bartee, [email protected], 846-8434.

BISHOP RICKEN OFFERS
“TEN WAYS CATHOLICS CAN LIVE
THE YEAR OF FAITH”
Continued from November 4
WASHINGTON—To honor the 50th anniversary of the Second
Vatican Council and the 20th anniversary of the Catechism of
the Catholic Church, Pope Benedict XVI has announced a
Year of Faith, starting October 11 and ending November 24, 2013. The goal is to
strengthen the faith of Catholics and draw the world to faith by their example.
Bishop David Ricken of Green Bay, Wisconsin, chairman of the Committee on
Evangelization and Catechesis of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, offers
“10 Ways Catholics Can Live the Year of Faith.” Rooted in guidelines from the
Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, some of these suggestions are
already requirements for Catholics; others can be embraced by Catholics at all times
and especially during the Year of Faith:
5. Read the documents of Vatican II. The Second Vatican Council (1962-65) ushered
in a great renewal of the Church. It impacted how Mass is celebrated, the role of the
laity, how the Church understands itself and its relationship with other Christians
and non-Christians. To continue this renewal, Catholics must understand what the
Council taught and how it enriches the lives of believers.
6. Study the Catechism. Published exactly 30 years after the start of the Council,
the Catechism of the Catholic Church covers the beliefs, moral teachings, prayer
and sacraments of the Catholic Church in one volume. It’s a resource for growing in
understanding of the faith. Another helpful resource is the U.S. Catholic Catechism
for Adults (USCCA).
7. Volunteer in the parish. The Year of Faith can’t only be about study and reflection.
The solid grounding of the Scriptures, the Council and the Catechism must translate
into action. The parish is a great place to start, and each person’s gifts help build up
the community. People are welcome as ministers of hospitality, liturgical musicians,
lectors, catechists and in other roles in parish life.

CHRISTMAS FOR
OUR DISABLED BROTHERS
AND SISTERS
December 8
This year we will be doing something
a little different in lieu of the annual
Christmas party in the parish hall.
Senior Girl Scout Troop 2054 will be
coordinating a “Night Before Christmas”
celebration at Belles-Silcock home,
which should be a blast with food,
games, crafts, caroling and Santa!
The kids we support are of various
ages and their disabilities range from
cerebral palsy to muscular dystrophy
to terminal illnesses. For some, this
will be their first Christmas experience
ever. Getting involving is still easy and
we could sure use your help collecting:
• PILLOWS (standard), pillow cases
(white and action hero) and pillow
protectors
• SOCKS
• PAJAMAS
If you have a loved one who is disabled
and would like to join us for the party,
call Sue at 501-2772. Thank you for all
your support. Sponsored by the HOPE
Office and Girl Scout Troop 2054

A Prayer for Our Progress
In these final 50 days of our Phase I building fund efforts we felt
that prayer is more important than ever. As miracles go, one of our
parishioners Ed Giardini was in Hawaii recently. He went to church and
heard the priest say a beautiful prayer for renovations to their church.
So taken with it, Ed asked for a copy of it and they complied with great
delight.
And so here below you see, for the first time, our adapted Hawaiian
Renovation Prayer:

Prayer For Rebuilding And Repair Of Saint Bonaventure Catholic Church
Spirit of our Lord, be with us this day.
You have anointed us through Baptism, Called us to be a community of Faith;
Inspire us with the desire to offer prayer, time, talent, and treasure as we move
forward with our rebuilding plan to repair our Church in which we will gather to
worship and hear the word of God.
Nourished by the Body and Blood of Christ, send us forth to fulfill our mission as a
compassionate community. Support our effort to take the Gospel message to the poor, to be
the voice of those in need, to extend a warm welcome to all, to teach our young to live their
faith, and to celebrate the journey with justice, love and peace.
St. Bonaventure, please guide us through the challenge of raising the funds
to build a Church which honors your name.
Amen!
Giving thanks always and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus
Christ to God the Father.

SAINT BONAVENTURE CATHOLIC SCHOOL
FOCUSES ON A YEAR OF FAITH
Since 2008, St. Bonaventure Catholic School's faculty,
students, staff, students, parents, and grandparents have
gathered each October and each May to pray the Rosary for
the special intentions of the community, including the recovery
from illness and the repose of the souls of family, friends and
community members, for the clergy and for the safety and
faith formation of students. Many attending the rosary said
that they were dedicating their rosary to military, tragedies
throughout the world, and a focus on our year of faith. 3rd
Grade Students along with Mrs. Switzer led the congregation in
song including Immaculate Mary, the Magnificat, and Ave Maria.
A slide show of images of the Blessed Mother and
illustrations of the Joyful Mysteries drawn by students,
was projected onto a screen behind the altar.

PAGINA DE LA COMUNIDAD HISPANA
CRISTO REY

QUESTION AND ANSWER
Q: What is meant by “Ecumenical Council” and why was the
Council called?
The church as “Mystery”
A: Going back to the Reformation, triggered in large part by Martin Luther, this
was a time in history when most priests had little or no theological expertise.
This was simply due to the Church not yet having the seminary system that
educated her priests. At the Council of Trent (1545-1563), the Roman Church decided
it would build seminaries for the training of priests and develop a huge compendium of
questions and answers about the faith (the catechism). That particular catechism was
designed as a kind of defense against a Protestant Revolt ever happening again.
As a result, however, the Church developed a rigid mentality, seeking security in
a set of certain propositions that Catholics had to believe or be damned. It was not
a mentality that was at all open to dialogue, or to a gentle seeking after the truth by
folks who believed in Jesus but might have differing views on how they might follow
him. No. The Roman Church became more and more like a bank, with a vault full of
unchangeable truths, and a team of officers and guards to watch over it. The church
even had a special term for it: ‘the deposit of faith.’
Vatican II would change all this by its discussions of the Church as ‘mystery.’ The
Church of Christ is more than a mere human organization. It is not like the Boy or Girl
Scouts, which were begun by humans and guided by humans. No, we, as Roman
Catholics believe that the Church was divinely founded and continues to be guided
by the presence of the Holy Spirit. As such, it is more than simply a human reality. It
is, in the words of the Fathers, truly a mystery – a combination of the human and the
divine. In this sense, then, the use of the word ‘mystery’ is recognition of this fact. God
is present in the Church and the infinity of God simply transcends the human’s ability to
have all the answers. Describing the Church as ‘mystery’ leads to a humble approach
in our search for the truth and a certain tentativeness in our journey toward the fullness
of truth, who is God. This means we can no longer claim to have all the answers.
However, this fact should not trouble us. It is simply an acceptance of humanity, a
humanity lovingly fashioned by its God.”

CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING
Rights and Responsibilities
The dignity of the human person
is what gives us the framework for
understanding our human rights. Human
dignity is respected and the common
good is fostered only if human rights
are protected and basic responsibilities
are met. Every human being has a
right to life, the fundamental right that
makes all other rights possible, and a
right to access those things required
for human decency – food and shelter,
education and employment, health care
and housing, freedom of religion and
family life. The right to exercise religious
freedom publicly and privately by
individuals and institutions, along with
freedom of conscience, needs to be
constantly defended. In a fundamental
way, the right to free expression of
religious beliefs protects all other rights.
Corresponding to these rights are duties
and responsibilities – to one another, to
our families, and to the larger society.

Citizenship #49)
