JURORS’ STATEMENTS
First, I would like to say how honored I am to be asked to jury the Lima Area Watercolor Society Art exhibition. I’ve worked with LAWS for a number of years and have
always appreciated their warmth and hospitality. I would also like to thank Bill Sullivan
from Art Space/Lima for being a gracious host.
I would like to extend my appreciation to co-juror Yuki Hall for her insight and cooperation in picking the show and awards. It was a very fun and engaging experience.
I was impressed with the breadth of vision and skill shown. Picking the show and
awards was not easy. There were many deserving paintings. We looked at each painting again and again and discussed merits and weaknesses. Eventually we reached a
consensus.
I would like to say a few words about the Best of Show award winner. This painting
stood out to me right away. It had an interesting color palette and wonderful brushwork. Obviously, the medium is handled with great skill. It is a great mix of interesting
color, value and textures, wrapped in a good design.
Finally, thank you to the artists for sharing their skill and vision. It was a pleasure jurying the show.
Christopher Leeper
Department of Art at Youngstown State University
It was my great honor to be invited to serve as a co-juror for the Lima Area Watercolor Society Juried Exhibition, 2014 at ArtSpace/Lima. The variety of subject matter
was outstanding, and I was truly impressed by the talent exhibited by each artist in this
group.
As a juror, I select paintings that exhibit an understanding of design principles, especially in shapes and tonal value distribution. Then I pay close attention to the artist’s
technical ability to present the subject matter as a compelling work of art. Lastly, I
turn to pieces that show the artist’s genuine courage to take risks with this wonderful
watercolor medium, to express themselves at a very personal level.
I would like to thank Chris Leeper for sharing with me his vast knowledge and experience in judging. I also would like to thank Bill Sullivan for his assistance and hospitality.
