Getting Down to Business
Las Vegas is not just for fun. Here’s wHy.
A world-clAss entertAinment
capital, Las Vegas draws millions
of tourists every year. But it’s also
the country’s most popular destination for meetings, tallying close to
20,000 conventions, conferences,
trade shows, and other business
meetings annually. Medical professionals, retailers, car makers,
franchise operators, technology
companies, entrepreneurs—that’s
just the tip of the iceberg when
it comes to the staggering list of professions and trades that make Las
Vegas a regular destination for their
meetings.
“We’re not a drive-in meetings
destination, where people come for
the day and leave. Some people have

to make an investment to fly here,”
says Chris Meyer, CMP, CEM, vice
president of sales, Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. “The
truth is, Las Vegas is a destination
for serious meetings. Sure, they can
have fun too, but they’re here to buy,
sell, network, learn.”
Thanks to a meetings infrastructure that includes almost 150,000
hotel rooms and 10.5 million square
feet of meeting space, Las Vegas has
plenty of options to offer business
groups—with more on the way. Last
year saw the opening of CityCenter,
a city-within-a-city along the Las
Vegas Strip, encompassing three
new hotels, 300,000 square feet of
meeting space, and a half-million-
incentive planner’s guide to las vegas
square-foot retail and entertainment
area. In December 2010, the 2,995room Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas
debuts on the Strip with 150,000
square feet of meeting space.
“The beautiful thing about Las
Vegas is that we have a price point
for every budget. We have no limitations on the size of a meeting—big
or small, you have choices when it
comes to venues,” Meyer explains.
“You can go to the property next
door, literally next door, and check
out what they have for suites or
meeting space or whatever it is
you are looking for. The buyer is in
control, and the buyer can shop for
who can deliver the best value for
the price.”

With a room inventory that
grew by about 8,000 last year and
is set to grow by 2,000 this year,
the buyer’s market in Las Vegas is
still strong, Meyer says, although
the falloff in meetings business that
hit the city (and many others) in
2009 has leveled off and is climbing
back up. Average hotel occupancy is
about 82 percent, with an average
daily rate hovering around $90.
Growing Corporate,
International Business
For 16 consecutive years, Las Vegas
has ranked as the top destination for
trade shows. But it’s also a big draw
for corporate groups, notes Michael
Goldsmith, CMP, LVCVA’s senior
director of convention sales. Close
to 80 percent of meetings held in
the city have 500 or fewer attendees, according to LVCVA statistics.
“Groups tapping 150 to 200 rooms
are bread-and-butter business for
hotels here,” Goldsmith says.
“They understand the corporate market better than anybody,”
he adds. “They want the business
to come back—repeat business is
easier to find than new bookings—
so they’re going to work with the
planner, and they’re going to deliver
a high level of service.” Goldsmith
calls the LVCVA the “Google of Las
Vegas. We know how and where
to get answers for planners” in a
destination where there can be an
intimidating assortment of facility
and program options.
One outreach effort to the cor-
porate market is the LVCVA’s Las
Vegas Business Forum. The forum
was launched in 2008 with the goal
of creating networking opportunities for selected corporate clients
and LVCVA’s hotel partners. “It’s
an opportunity for engagement, for
clients to talk about their particular
needs,” Meyer says. The forum is
growing in scope, adding an educational component this year.
The value proposition found
in Las Vegas makes it an attractive
destination for international groups
as well. “A lot of people around
the world are coming here to do
business,” Meyer says. He points to
spikes in international attendance
driving growth in the annual Consumer Electronics Show, automotive
expos, and many retail-oriented
trade shows held in the city. “The
world likes to do business here.”
Indeed, next year Las Vegas
will host 12 travel/meetings industry
conferences. These include the annual conventions of the Professional
Convention Management Association, the International Association
for Exhibitions and Events, and the
American Society of Travel Agents.
The international conference of Site
(Society of Incentive Travel Executives), held in South Africa this
year and China in 2012, will meet
in Las Vegas in 2011, as will IMEX
America, a new U.S. exhibition for
the worldwide incentive travel,
meetings, and events industry.

Ask Ed Kelly, president of the American Express Publishing Corp.,
why Las Vegas is a good fit for corporate meetings, and he mentions the city’s accessibility, its great “value for money ratio,”
its meeting facilities, and the fact that it’s a popular place to do
business.
“There’s an opportunity to maximize your time when you come to
Vegas, because a lot of business happens in the city,” Kelly says. “When
we recently hosted the American Express Publishing Luxury Summit in Las
Vegas, for example, attendees arranged other business meetings before
and after our meetings. That makes it a smart investment for everyone.”
Kelly adds that supporting the city and its luxury brands “was one
of the main purposes of holding our summit in Las Vegas this year.” The
company timed the 200-person summit to coincide with the opening of
Mandarin Oriental in CityCenter. “The hotel was an excellent venue for the
summit by day, and as a group we enjoyed being out and about in Las
Vegas at night. One standout event was bringing the group to see
Le Reve at the Wynn Encore. The show really captures the excitement
of Las Vegas.”
In a meeting-planning career that spans 20 years, Douglas Caldwell,
vice president of global meeting planning for JP Morgan Chase, has
been doing business in Las Vegas for 19 of those years.
He points to a big change in recent years in the destination’s reception to
small corporate groups. “In the past, hotels were not that interested in 200room nights, but that’s not the case anymore—and that makes the destination
more attractive than ever for corporate groups.”
With the wide variety of first-class hotels and huge range of entertainment
options, you can come back to Vegas with clients and never have to do anything
twice. Same destination, different experiences,” he says.
Asked for his advice for corporate planners new to the destination, Caldwell
cautions against “haggling over $5 on the room rate,” without taking into account the big picture, including the layout of the facility, the quality of food and
beverage, service levels, and, in general, “how your attendees are going to
experience the property.”
He also strongly recommends building a relationship with the area hotels
and with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. “The bureau will bend
over backwards to put Las Vegas on the map. They’ll work with you on any
scenario.”

Phil Cavanagh, CMM, vice president, global events and trade shows, for Monster
Worldwide, has a long history of bringing meetings and trade show business to Las
Vegas. Every year since 1997 he has hosted a variety of events in Las Vegas, ranging
from 50 to 5,400 people.
“There is a tremendous demographic of focused hospitality industry professionals. In today’s
competitive marketplace, each person’s efforts contribute to the unique and memorable service
experiences available in Las Vegas.”
Cavanagh points to an example of that service level: More than 3,600 of his attendees had to
depart the Mandalay Events Center, be paired with their luggage, grab a customized boxed lunch,
and board awaiting buses. “The coordination between the team at Mandalay Bay, the phenomenal
bell staff, the banquet team, transportation provider, and our destination management company was
fantastic. The entire operation was conducted in 30 minutes and only one bag was misidentified by
one of my own attendees. I have yet to repeat that performance anywhere else.”
His advice to planners looking at Las Vegas is to maximize what each facility offers. Always
consider how outdoor space, theaters, and unique event venues can be utilized for your event.
Flexibility on meeting dates is always a good tip, he says, especially if you want to capitalize on the
city’s world-class entertainment.
“In Las Vegas alone I have been able to secure a memorable performance of Sting, John
Mellencamp, Joss Stone, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy by leveraging their existing Las Vegas schedules with our conference and event dates,” he says. “Tremendous savings can be realized by tapping
into the city’s world-class entertainment.”
Maralynn Adams, CMP, has worked in corporate meetings and events for more than 10
years and now owns her own company, the
Corporate Event Group, where she’s involved
in mainly corporate training and sales conferences. She’s been taking events to Las
Vegas for years and she too has seen a big
turnaround in hotels’ reception of corporate
business.
“If you didn’t have a big piece of business it
could be hard to get a callback,” she says. But in
today’s buyer’s market, “customer service for
small meetings has come back—and I really
appreciate that.”
Adams enjoys exploring what’s new and different, “what people haven’t seen or done a million
times at their meetings. There are so many creative,
artistic people in Las Vegas and they’re always pushing into what’s new,” she says. “You can do almost
anything in Las Vegas—and at reasonable prices. You
could probably do that in New York, but you’re going
to pay dearly for it.”

Going green is something many venues
in Las Vegas are taking seriously, none
more so than CityCenter. The mega

opened in December, was designed
from the ground up to be one of the
world’s largest environmentally sustainable developments.

glass tower offering 300,000 square

Sustainability efforts are catching
to receive this level of recognition. CityCenter’s ARIA and Vdara hotels have

INCENTIVE PLANNER’S GUIDE TO LAS VEGAS
/ 20 10 -2 01 1
MEETINGS SUCCESS IN LAS VEGAS IS FACT
Las Vegas is known worldwide as a fun and exciting
destination – traits that may make meeting planners
and corporate executives leery about hosting a
meeting there. However, the thought that Las Vegas’
leisure amenities detract from productive business
travel is a myth.
Almost 20,000 business events were held in
Las Vegas last year, attracting nearly 4.5 million
delegates. Why, you may ask, would they take
such a chance? The answer is simple – Vegas
Means Business.
For decades, Las Vegas has had a dual existence
with travelers to the destination, attracting millions
of leisure travelers during the weekend and hosting
millions of business travelers during the week.
This dichotomy of travel is made possible by the
commitment and vision of the destination and its
developers. Las Vegas provides more than 10.5
million square feet of meeting and exhibit space,
has nearly 150,000 rooms, and offers tremendous
service and amenities to make any event a success.
Research has shown that meetings held in
Las Vegas attract more delegates who spend more
time conducting business than in other cities.
The perceived distractions that come with being
one of the top leisure destinations in the world
simply do not hold true. In addition to the great
amenities and service in the destination, planners
have opportunities to provide their delegates
with some great experiences. With some of
the most unique facilities in the world, the
Las Vegas resort community provides seemingly
endless opportunities to customize their events. And
Las Vegas is known for its continued commitment
to keeping the destination fresh and exciting. With
every reinvention of the destination, even groups
that have come to Las Vegas for years can find
something new.
The value that’s offered in Las Vegas right now
makes it an easy decision to host a meeting or
convention there. Planners are able to find exactly
the right facility, menus, room blocks and more at
prices that have not been seen in years. Hosting your
business function in Las Vegas is just good business
right now.
The meetings and convention industry is one of
the greatest tools in business and a key driver of
the economy. The Las Vegas meetings community
is committed to supporting and protecting that
industry both in Las Vegas and nationwide.
The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority
staff is available to help your group sift through
the seemingly endless options at the destination to
make sure you find the right fit for your group.

Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health doesn’t sound like a place for corporate events, but wait until you
see this stainless-steel explosion of a building, designed by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry.
Opened in 2009, the center is about a mile north of the Strip at the edge of Symphony Park, the city’s
developing arts and science community. The center is part of the Cleveland Clinic and is a leading
research and treatment facility for Alzheimer’s disease. Its Keep Memory Alive Event Center, available
for private functions, has already been the site of star-studded fundraisers. With 199 windows in an
undulating stainless steel trellis canopy, the hall accommodates 450 for seated events.

Grand Canyon: For a break from the neon and glitter of The Strip, nothing beats a
helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon. Maverick Helicopter Tours has the world’s
largest fleet of ECO-Star helicopters, the premium tourism helicopter, known as a
“limo in the sky.” Groups of up to six or seven per helicopter fly over Lake Mead and
the Hoover Dam on the way to the Grand Canyon. Private landings can be arranged,
where the helicopter descends 3,000 feet into the canyon. Guests enjoy a 30-minute
champagne and hors d’oeuvres reception before flying back to The Strip. Talk about a
“bucket” experience. maverickhelicopter.com
Las Vegas Motor Speedway: For a real change of pace, put your attendees in NASCAR-style
race cars and see what happens. Richard Petty Driving Experience operates 20 tracks nationwide, including one at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Guests can take the
wheel themselves or ride shotgun with professionals. The group events
team can create customized corporate programs. One popular teambuilding activity is the In the Pit Stop Challenge where teams must
perform real-life tire-changing in a time-trial scenario. Facilities
for meetings and events are available at the track. drivepetty.com

You’ll find no shortage of ground transportation companies and destination
management firms in Las Vegas. How do you choose? Here are a few tips from
Rick Foreman, vice president of sales and marketing for the Alan Waxler Group/
AWG Charter Services, one of the city’s largest and most well-established destination management companies/transportation companies:
Do a site visit. “Due diligence means making sure yourself that the company
you hire is operating safe vehicles, has safety procedures in place, and can
deliver the service level you need. Don’t just rely on word of mouth.”
Be flexible with your dates. “If there’s a big citywide in town during your
dates, transportation equipment will be in demand and therefore more costly.
A little flexibility goes a long way.”
Experience counts. “Knowing the destination and having relationships with
hotels, restaurants, and other locals is critical. There’s a maze of options in
Las Vegas and a good transportation company will help you navigate them.”
