A Message From The President
Happy May,
I have decided to ramble and maybe provide
some recommendations from someone who
has owned Porsche fine automobiles since
1976, off and on. Seven I think with my 1976
912E being my only new car.
If you take your Porsche (or any car or SUV) on
a trip and hate those bugs you have to scrape
off when you come home, make it easy on
yourself by buying a spray bottle of Griot's Bug
Barricade. Just spray on the front end of a
clean car before leaving home, and smear
around with a micro-fiber cloth and that's it till
you wash the car. Advance Auto Parts might
have some, but I think they are dropping
restocking any Griot's products so order online. I have also heard any spray auto detailer
will work, but Griot's I feel sure is the best.
Own a Cayman and hate that sun that comes in
through the rear window heating up your car in
the summer and bleaching out the carpet, then
go to your Porsche dealer and order a rear
sun-screen. I got one when I had to brave
those hot summer days in Houston, and it is
still in place and works great.
Thinking about a first-time clear bra for your
front-end or maybe replacing the old one, skip
the Scotch film and move up to Xpel film. It is
somewhat self-healing I am told and after
bumping my Cayman front end into an object
in my garage, I can tell you the Scotch film is
not self-healing. If you need recommendations
on installers, let me know.
Ever had a dead battery and you don't have
AAA or want to wait on AAA? I have and just
added a new "toy" to my car with a DB Power
Supply from Amazon (where else?). It is very
small and comes with a carry case and will
start your car or recharge your cell phones,
since it comes with 2 USB ports. Instructions
say to plug into your AC and recharge twice/
year or after use. I bought the 12000 mAh
model which will start up to 3L engine, but
many comments from users say they have
used it for much bigger engines. This model
was only $51, and if you want a bigger and
badder one, just pay more and get it!
Ever had a flat tire and don't want to wait on a
tow or squirt foam in your tire (assuming you
don't have a spare), then pick up a new or
used spare tire from a 996 and put into your
bonnet. I have one in the front of my Cayman
along with a small tool bag, torque wrench and
breaker bar. Picked it up at LA Dismantler for
$350, but OKLA Foreign also has them from
time to time. Got a small jack also.
One final thought on keeping an eye on what
might be in your oil, especially if you have one
of those pesky IMS bearings many are
concerned about, pick up a magnetic oil plug
and have your mechanic (or you) check it at
every oil change looking for metal shavings. Might save you an engine. They are
inexpensive and you can get at
LNengineering.com for less than $26. I have
one on my Cayman S.
Well, that's all the tips for this month. Hope to
see you at the May 21 Concours!
Mike

Why Concours?
Article and pictures by Dave Yerzley
“You’re entering an event where you are paying someone to tell you how lousy
your car is. THAT, my friends, is not normal behavior. Revel in your
masochism and you’ll be ok.”
- James Brackenrig
So the people who show their cars in concours must be a bunch of old guys who are afraid
to drive them the way they were intended to be driven, so they hover and obsess around
them with toothpicks and q-tips, right? Well, let’s not jump to conclusions so fast.
I’ve got a 1972 911T Targa that I bought new. It’s still mostly original, including the paint,
and it looks pretty good, but no one would look at it closely and mistake it for a new car.
But I know of a few cars as old or older which are also original and look like they could still
be on the showroom floor. I wish my car looked as good as their cars do. How did they
do that? But I’m getting ahead of myself here. Let me tell you a little bit about my own
concours experiences.
You’ll Learn New Ways
to Look at Your Car
Linda and I joined PCA at the end of
2001, just after her new Boxster S had
been delivered. The following year we
went to the Boise Parade and, to get into
the spirit of the event, we entered every
competition. Never having participated in
a Concours before, we spent a lot of time
working on the car, trying to figure out
where judges might look and coming up
with ways to clean and prepare areas we
had never even thought about before.
We had a real advantage in that the car
was relatively new, and, for beginners, we
did pretty well, placing 4th in a field of 16
Boxsters. After we got back, we cleaned
the car up again and entered the Santa
Barbara concours in Wash & Shine, again
doing reasonably well, but still with room
for improvement.

MAY 2016
Not too long afterward, we bought a 1973 911S coupe. I had wanted the car to drive, but
it was in such fundamentally good condition that I thought with a little effort it would make
a good show car, so we got to work on it. We entered it in Wash & Shine a couple of times
over the next year. We also went to Zone 8 Judging Schools and to various seminars on
car care given by vendors to see what we could learn. Finally we decided to progress to
Street division, which adds the engine and storage compartments as judged areas. This
decision brought with it a new set of challenges. Finish of the sheet metal pan around the
engine not too good? Drop the engine to the floor, take out all that stuff and have it powder
coated. How do you repair the carpeting in the trunk with its multiple thin areas and small
holes? What a mess the gas heater compartment was! But we managed to figure out how
to get those and other tasks done and entered more events, getting compliments about
how much progress we were making with the car and with our own skills. This year,
without really planning to do so, we ended up participating in most of the Zone 8 events,
winning class and division championships.
So is all this really an exercise in masochism? At least once each time I’m getting a car
ready for a show, I end up asking myself: “self, why in the world are you doing all this
work?” And then recently I realized that in the process of cleaning, touching up paint,
repairing that old carpeting that Porsche used to use (it’s really not much more than
compacted lint), waxing and polishing and so on, I’d acquired a really useful set of skills.
Now I have some idea about how those people managed to keep their old cars not just
well, but like new. When l approach a car to clean it, I look at all sorts of places which
most people never even think of but which, in the aggregate, can make the difference
between a car looking ok and looking really nice. I’ve worked out all sorts of little
techniques and tricks for cleaning some of these areas.
Although it’s not the only possibility, participation in the various events that make up the
Zone 8 Concours program is an efficient way to learn, and also to have some good times
with your fellow club members. At these events you’ll have access to tremendous amounts
of expertise and experience which you can take advantage of and, when the car is judged,
you’ll get lots of feedback about how well what you’re doing is working, from people who
have evaluated a lot of cars. You’ll be able to take even greater pride in your Porsche,
knowing that it’s in the best possible condition.
Concours Judge Looking for Opportunities
To Offer Constructive Criticism

MAY 2016
So how best to get started? Read the
new Manual for Zone 8 Concours
Judges, posted on the Zone 8 website,
and attend the Zone 8 Judge’s School,
scheduled this year for Saturday, March
3. You’ll get additional insight into how a
concours is conducted, along with more
information about what judges look for
when evaluating a car. Then start
preparing your car and coming to events
in the Concours schedule. With a little
fun and effort, you can become an expert
yourself in taking care of your car.
The Result: a Well-Prepared Car

Concours Tee Shirt
This PCA Musik-Stadt (MSK) Concours event is designed
to recognize the best maintained Porsches and participation
points will be applied toward the Enthusiast of the Year
Award.
Entries will be grouped into 12 classes and awards will be
given for first-, second-, and third-place class winners in
each category, as well as the People’s Choice and the Judge’s
Choice. There also will be a special award for the car judged
“exceptional” by Porsche of Nashville.
If you pre-register for the Concours you will receive your
event tee shirt with your car documentation at registration.
If you do not pre-register you will not be given an event
tee shirt! The event tee shirts will be available for sale at the
Concours for $20 each.
Cars will be evaluated based on specific criteria established
by the PCA and published in the Parade Competition Rules
(PCR) for the interior, exterior, storage compartment, and
engine. Points will be deducted from 100 (perfect) against
a standardized score sheet. Judges will be restricted to a
standard time limit per car. Scores from the four areas will
be totaled and the car with the highest score will win.
MSK Concours’ judging is based on the assumption that the
Porsche to be judged should be in the same state of fit, finish,
and repair as the day it left the factory. The best maintained
cars will be those whose owners have repaired, replaced,
and/or touched up items and areas that have deteriorated
from “as new” condition.
Participating Classes
Group 1: 48-65 Type 356 open
Group 2: 48-65 Type 356 closed
Group 3: 66-73 Type 911, 912
Group 4: 70-76 Type 914, 914-6
Group 7: 90-98 Type 964, 993
Group 8: 99-04 Type 996
The number of cars entered in each class will determine
second and third place awards. Should more than one car
have identical scores, the car(s) with the highest mileage will
prevail.
Group 11: Panamera, Cayenne, Macan
Cleanliness will be judged only by visual inspection and not
by touching the car.

The Porsche Connection
By: Ken Maurer
We humans are funny creatures. We tend
to form relationships with non-living
objects, and not only that, but sometimes
we even develop emotional attachments to
those objects. In that vane, I was recently
reminded of a way I used to form just such
attachments with my previous sports cars
— through performing some of it’s needed
routine maintenance.
I know, I know, it’s not nearly as glorious as
getting that heel/toe downshift just right as
you head into that last right hand kink just
before your house, but it really does bring
one closer to the machine. Changing the
oil, for example, gives you a window of
insight into what the inside of the motor
might look like and how it’s running. Is the
old oil generally clean? Are there any
metallic or plastic bits trapped in the filter?
Does it look (or smell) of fuel or coolant
dilution? I must admit, the last few items
there would not make me feel all that great,
but I do feel great when the oil comes out
looking used, but nice and clean all things
considered. Ditto for the brake fluid when
you do a flush (and, if you do a flush, might
I recommend a Power Bleeder - makes the
job very easy). The spark plugs too, don’t
forget about those — another window, this
time into the combustion chamber and how
well your Porsche is burning that air/fuel
charge.
You also might find little reminders of your
Porsche adventures of the past along the
way, like I did with one of my underbody
panels. The passage of time had created
a small tear in of the panels which was
spreading and prompted my replacing it,
but while doing so, I saw some other small
nicks and scars in the same panel. “Oh
yes” I thought, “I bet that happened when
that 4x4 cut over in front of me on the
highway and a large rock filled dirt clod
came loose and clobbered me.” Granted,
it wasn’t the best Porsche experience I’ve
had, but my Cayman and I survived it fine,
and it’s now a part of our history. Little
things like that might jump up at you along
the way, prompting those walks down
memory lane.
You may also find new connections with
friends and other PCA members as you
converse back and forth about various
projects and suggestions and assistance
for proper completion (or finding that
torque value you need!). I know I’ve found
that doing the maintenance myself now, a
task I initially undertook to save some
money, is extremely fulfilling in itself.
Indeed the money I saved became
secondary, as I ended up spending much
of the savings on other, less pressing,
though still relevant, maintenance items. A
bonus is that each time you jack up your
Porsche and remove the wheels is an
opportunity to clean all the old brake dust
out from the barrels.
So the next time your Porsche needs an oil
change, or brake fluid flush, consider
doing it yourself. You just might end up
creating a whole new bond between you
and your Porsche.
