MENU FOR JULY 16, 2012 MEETING: Spaghetti with Meat Balls, Salad, Garlic Bread
JUNE 18TH MEETING: “BRING YOUR ACCORDION AGAIN” and a COLLINS BOYS PREVIEW by Raye Donatella
Pre-meeting music was played by Ted Lee on his pretty Roland accordion. He gave us a very pleasant hour of music, including several vocals - really nice, Ted.
The Collins boys, Quinn and Liam, are going to Baltimore, Maryland, in July to
compete at the
2012 American Accordion Association Festival from July 11th through July
15th, at the Sheraton City Center. We were honored to have them play their competition selections for us. I can't name the songs they played, because if I did,
they'd have to kill me. (I was told not to name their songs because someone could
copy their entries in the competition.) So just let me say that they are two of the
most talented young men around, and
we wish them the best! See you when
you get back from Baltimore, boys.
You're the greatest!
Dennis Humlicek on the button box
and Frank Schweller on keyboard accordion played for us now - they played
duets of “Alley Cat,” then a beautiful waltz, then a polka, and finished their
set with “By Myself” and “In Heaven There Is No Beer.” You guys have
played together for so many years and know each other's habits so well, it's
just fun to watch and listen to you!
Pete Donatella, accompanied by Jim
Winning on drums, played next - they
began with “our” song - Pete's and mine“For Once In My Life,” then “Going Out
Of My Head,” then Jay Stevens joined in
to sing a
rather convoluted
version of
the old Allan Sherman song called “Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah, Here I Am At Camp Grenada.”
But it wasn't too bad, Jay - in fact, I think most of us remembered it!
Now Jerry Szymanski sat in and they played “The Sheboygan Polka,” “I Can't Give You
Anything But Love,” “Isn't It Romantic,” and then one of my favorite polkas, “Cafe Polka” (Hey Bob A Re Bob) - then look, here comes Bill Burkett with his magic mandolin to
add to the mix - they segued into “Let's Have a Party” with Jay Stevens singing - and he
even knew the words! “Somewhere, My Love” finished out their songs, with Bill's mandolin the featured sound. So pretty - you gentlemen are the cream of music making!
Our club president, Jack Dermody, was up next to play a song called “There Is a Tavern
In The Town,” only he wanted the audience to stand up and touch their bodies and sing
along with “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Feet” as he has to play a French gig in a couple
of days, and he wanted to practice. I don't know, Jack - asking an audience of Senior Citizens to touch their feet was - how do you say this? - Quite a feat!

President’s Message
Monday Nights at St. Stephens Will Continue. It is close to unanimous that
we do not want to change our meeting venue away from St. Stephen’s. Nor evidently do we want to switch from Monday nights to Sunday afternoons. However, in order to pay the rent for our meetings, it remains important to attend
meetings regularly and to show off the club by bringing family and friends. The
five dollars that each of us pays guarantees that we can continue there.
"I will be out of town on the 16th and Pete Donatella will conduct the meeting.
He will be counting on your attendance"
Our Appearance at the MIM. On behalf of the Arizona Accordion Club,
Leigh Dechaine entertained and informed guests of the Musical Instrument
Museum (MIM) in Phoenix on Sunday, June 24 – for two thirty-minute shows.
See the article and photos on page 4. I personally hope this is the beginning of a
long-term relationship with MIM, a museum that Tony Bennett calls “the greatest museum in the world.” One thing is for sure – the MIM treats the accordion
extremely respectfully and as completely as possible. If you have not yet visited
the MIM, do yourself a big favor and get down there. It’s a WOW. It’s an item
for your Bucket List.
Tony Putrino at the MIM on Sat, July 14 – Bastille Day. Speaking of the
MIM, don’t miss Tony Putrino who will entertain to celebrate Bastille Day.
MIM is partnering with the Alliance Francaise of Greater Phoenix. Should be
fun. The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on that day.
The Collins Brothers Rocked the House. We are so lucky to live in the same
town as Quinn and Liam Collins who honored us with a performance of some of
the competition pieces for the AAA contest in Baltimore. By the next meeting,
we will find out which awards they come home with. Oh yes, those young men
will surely return bearing trophies!!
Accordions for Sale at the Meetings. More and more, our members are bringing accordions to sell in the backroom behind the bar. More than once, there
have been some real surprises and good deals.
The Summer Jam Continues. The jamming we are doing at meetings is getting
more fun every month. Do bring your accordion and join us. Summertime is the
season to let our hair down and enjoy some of our own music. Go to page 7 and
learn Return to Me. Let’s see who comes up with the most creative bass accompaniment!
Weekends at Haus Murphy. Starting Friday, July 20, I’ll be joining Duane
Tendick at Haus Murphy in Glendale from 5-7 pm. I am filling in for vacationing Elmer Faser for about 6 weeks. We’re there every Friday and Saturday.
Come on down. Enjoy great food. And applaud extremely loudly for me and Duane!
Thanks!
Jack

The Arizona Accordion Club at the World-Renowned Musical Instrument Museum (MIM)
Arizona Accordion Club secretary Leigh Dechaine broke the ice at the MIM to showcase the wonders of the accordion to
crowds of onlookers on Sunday, June 24. He talked about
the history and played numerous examples of musical
styles on three different accordions. From this point forward, our club is on MIM’s radar, so the next time we get
invited, let’s be ready with a variety of presentations that
will show off all we can do, okay? Stay tuned.
Meanwhile, our own Tony Putrino is playing at the MIM for Bastille Day,
July 14. He performs solo at 10:00 a.m., then later at 4:00 p.m. with French
vocalist Helene Bergeon. This is an event partnered with the
Alliance Francaise of Greater Phoenix. Look for a good time.
Accordion Club Potpourri by Pete Donatella, Reporter in the Field
Aside from the common use of potpourri to freshen a room with dried, naturally fragrant plant material, a potpourri can be a collection of
diverse or miscellaneous items that may enhance a setting - having so defined my use of potpourri
here is a sample collection.
1. One of our members, Bernie Vessel, from Canada, recently wrote that he had discovered a song
written and performed by Franc Miholic called “Majski Cvetje,” and Bernie said that he is so impressed by this song that he wants it played in place of any
eulogy upon his passing. You can hear it on YouTube.
I am now learning this wonderful waltz and will soon perform it
myself.
2. Another friend of mine and our club, Augie Figurelli, sent
me a job referral for French music at a one time event in the
Paradise Valley Mall. Two and a half hours in the Center Court
for “Mom's Night Out” in the Mall. My French repertoire is not
that extensive, but it is the sound of the Muzette accordion that
does the trick. My young student prodigy, eight year old Ian
Patrick Rankin, had recently played a French song in a
school talent show - he even wore a beret and scarf and
striped shirt. Sure enough he
agreed to help me in Paradise Valley Mall and he was
a big hit! One lady even
gave him
a dollar tip! He was thrilled!
3. Recently in a West Phoenix paper called “The West Valley
View,” there was an article titled “Generations of Love.” The six
children featured are the OʼGaraʼs, five of whom play the accordion, and play they do! The article is about more than the accordion,
it's about giving and sharing and volunteering, in which they all are
very active, but as their teacher I feel so proud to be a part of their
experience. Several of their instruments were donated to our club
and in two cases, directly to them. These three short accounts are
but a smidgen of the tales that are in the Accordion Club Potpourri

Continued from the cover… What to do at the next meeting
Learn Return to me ( page 7 ) * Play 3 solos ( Including Return to Me ) * Play a duet or trio with others
Play "Name That Tune" with Elmer Faser
Jam with Pete on a very simple song
Provide a mini-workshop. Show us how to do something.
The Suggested Solo: 'Return to Me . It will be fun to see how each person interprets the song.
100 Dragspel och en Flicka (A Hundred Accordions and A Girl)
Two young guys (Elof Ahrle, who also composed the title song of this film, )
run a small accordion workshop, and have invented a terrific new accordion.
Young boy (played by Anders Nyström) shows up.
Old FarFar (a distinguished accordionist) has lost his money. Young Boy's older sister is the Flicka of the title, and of course Elof is immediately smitten,
Plan is to win international accordion competition and sell patent to major accordion multinational manufacturer, save the day.
But .. and here it becomes maybe the world's only accordion thriller, the big,
bad corporate accordion combine has other plans. They scheme to steal the revolutionary new accordion design. But the good guys foil them. They still have
to win the competition, though, and that means getting somebody to play the
accordion in the contest. FarFar is designated, but gets stage fright at the last
minute.
Oh No! Young boy steps in and saves the day. Big, hundred-accordion finale!
Farfar gets the money, Elof gets the girl, everybody sings and everybody lives
happily ever after (except the bad guys, who we don't hear much about).
The film is in Swedish without any subtitles of any sort.
Not only Swedish, but a rather difficult 1950's vintage Stockholmska you probably can't hear anywhere anymore.
Music: A modern rendition of the title song by a bunch of agreeable Swedish
guys on their front porch can be found here, http://youtu.be/
ymGDhDfZ0nEcourtesy of Youtube.
Link also on the Arizona Accordion Cub’s Facebook site
The grand finale is practically an encyclopedia of Nordic accordion classics, including Säkkijärven Polkka.
I think this needs a modern remake. Where is Fritz Lange when you need him?

Dennis Enright played for us next - he did “Bye, Bye, Blackbird,” “Beautiful
Ohio,” and finished with a tune I don't know but all nicely done. Thanks, Dennis.
It's always good to see students who don't like to play in front of a crown get up and
do it! Well done, Dennis.
Rosemary Smith from Sun City was next with Jack Dermody - they played accordion and Jim Winning played drums to do their rendition of the song of the month,
“Anytime.”
Then Rosemary and Jim played “Somebody Bad Stole the Wedding Bell,” followed
by an original song written by Dale Matthies called “Up And Down.”
That was pretty, Rosemary.
Dale Matthies, also from Sun City, came up next to play a few original tunes he's
written, the first of which was “Party Polka,” “Up And Down,” and ended with
“I Want To Dance With You.” Those are really great songs, Dale. Thanks for coming.
Elmer Faser played a game with the audience to “Name
That Tune” - Bill Burkett and Chuck Voinivich were the
contestants, with Dale Matthies as the judge - Elmer
played tunes for the guys to guess the names of, and Bill
Burkett won, 5 to 4! Cute, cute!
Then Elmer played a Slovenian waltz titled “At the Bridge”
with Jim on drums, then a tune he wrote called “Dreams of
Odessa,” followed by the song of the month, “Anytime.”
That was a fun half-hour, Elmer.
To end the evening, Jack Dermody, Jay Stevens, Jerry Szymanski, Elmer Faser, and Ron Grabowski on accordions,
Bill Burkett on mandolin, and Jim Winning on drums played the song of the month, “Anytime,” and finished with a
polka. It was another fun evening - good music, good friends, good times! See you on July 16th
Now for a quick “as my Dad always said. ” I could now afford
all the things I never had as a kid, if I didn't have kids.”

Silent Reeds
One of our beloved members, Shirley Barnes, passed away on May 17.
Her last appearance at the Arizona Accordion Club was the “opening

kindness, and her love of the accordion.
Shirley Kadan Barnes of Sun Lakes, AZ passed away on May 17th,
2012. She was born January 18th, 1933 in Brooklyn Park, Maryland.
She and her husband Gail were residents in Sun Lakes, AZ.
Shirley was an accomplished musician and played the accordion as a
child, a skill she developed over her adult life. She was a member of
the Accordion Club and performed in many different venues in Sun
Lakes She was a member of Unity Church of Sun Lakes. Shirley always
saw the good in people, and accepted them for who and how they were.
She was unfailingly there for advice and support for those who sought
it. All who knew Shirley loved her. A memorial service is being held
