Abigail Preckel Has Art Work
Featured at U.S. Capitol
Timberland junior Abigail Preckel has
been chosen as the winner from the
3rd District in the Congressional Art
Competition. Abigail’s pastel painting on
sandpaper titled “My Self” features a
young girl’s portrait contrasted against a
dark yellow background. Her work will
be displayed along with other winners
from congressional districts around the
country in the Cannon Tunnel at the U.S.
Capitol. Abigail, whose art teacher is
Crystal Wing, will have the opportunity to
attend a ceremony in Washington, D.C.
this summer where all winning artwork
from across the nation will be displayed.
Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school
visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the
nation and in each congressional district. Since the Artistic Discovery
Competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have
participated. Students submit entries to their representative’s office, and
panels of district artists select the winning entries. Winners are recognized
both in their district and at an annual awards ceremony in Washington,
DC. The winning works are displayed for one year at the U.S. Capitol.
The winning entries were selected by Washington, Missouri artist Gary Lucy.
Lucy is known for his paintings of nature and his commissioned piece done
for the 175th anniversary of Washington, Missouri. "Seeing students' artwork
from around the country in the halls of the Capitol is very special to me,"
said U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (MO-03). "Mr. Lucy's choice was very
difficult this year because of the number of exceptional entries. I am
looking forward to displaying Abigail's painting in the Capitol and
featuring the runners-up paintings in my district offices."
More than 40 pieces of artwork were submitted from across the
3rdCongressional District.

FROM DR. HOVEN’S DESK...
With spring break behind us, we are now officially in the stretch run
to the end of the year. Rather than easing up, however, this
becomes perhaps the busiest time of the year. Just about every
student in the building will end up taking some kind of standardized
test, be it an End-Of-Course Test, an AP Test, or the ACT. This doesn’t
even include the final exams that all students will be facing. In
addition, these last few weeks are extremely important to grade
point averages, as many major projects come due. We need your
help in encouraging you son or daughter to keep up the motivation
to finish the year in a strong way.
Speaking of testing, this month marks the first time the state of Missouri will offer the ACT free of
charge to all high school juniors. While this has now become a part of the state’s testing plan,
it is also an amazing opportunity for our juniors. The students’ scores on this ACT will be official
and will be available for college admissions or scholarship applications. Whether this is the first
time a student takes the ACT or another attempt at a higher score, this is such a positive
change for our students. We wish them the best of luck on the ACT later this month.
Thanks for all of your support so far this year. I am excited about the things we’ve
accomplished together, and I look forward to a strong finish.
Is Your Junior or Senior Thinking College?
College representative(s) from area universities visit the Timberland campus for a 30-minute group
informational meeting with interested students.
See the calendar for college visits this semester. Check weekly as more are added regularly through
April.
If your 11th or 12th grader would like to be included in the group visit, please ask him/her to sign up in
the blue College Visit notebook on the counter in the Guidance office. A pass will be delivered on the
day of the visit.

A+ TRAINING INFO
The last A+ Tutor Training of the year is
Thursday, May 14 in room 163 from 2:30 pm 3:30 pm. Students must preregister in the
guidance office. Students must attend one
tutor training before they can begin
tutoring. This training is open to sophomores

Orphans in India have received self portraits painted by Timberland High School artists. The THS students had the opportunity to paint portraits
from photographs through The Memory Project which connects art students with orphans around the world. The program was created by Ben
Schumaker in 2004 after volunteering in Guatemala and speaking to a man who had grown up in an orphanage and had no personal items
from his youth. THS Fine Arts Chair Crystal Wing gives her students the option each year to participate because the students actually pay a small
fee to have the portraits delivered. Students from Mr. Holland's painting class also chose to participate. Each year THS students eagerly step up to
create portraits for the program, and this year was no exception. The following THS artists created portraits for the children in India: Trent Bourland,
Madison Coffman, Addison Grigsby, Claire Hendrickson, Kayla Keeven, Austin Lynch, Ellie Sexton, Hailey Snell, Mckayla Oakley, Kat Holmes, Greg
Holland, Anahi Anchondo, Daria Black, Katie Akin, Chelsea Chapman, Jace Garcia, Alex Hallemeier, Jameson Hemsath, Erin Higgins, Abigail
Preckel, Maggie Rodamaker, Elise Schillinger, Katie Schoenborn, Danielle Shackelford and Kelly Schubel. The fees paid by students also helped
fund a collective donation of $3,500 to help support the orphans’ education. According to The Memory Project website, art students across the
globe have created over 60,000 portraits for children in 34 countries since 2004.

THS STUDENTS TAKE THE PLUNGE
More than 70 National Honor Society and Student
Council members participated in the Creve Coeur
Polar Bear Plunge held on February 28th. The Polar
Bear Plunge is a charity event that raises money for
Special Olympics through donations. THS was named
“Most Spirited” group of the day as they took the
plunge in water that was 33 degrees with an air
temperature of 24 degrees and snow blowing
sideways! Students raised over $6,500 for Missouri
Special Olympics. Way to go!

Congratulations to senior Andrew Powell for being honored at the Annual STEM
Recognition Breakfast, hosted by Partners for Progress of Greater St. Charles. The breakfast
was held on March 6 at Old Hickory Golf Club in St. Peters where Andrew was honored
along with 16 other local high school students for their work in STEM related areas. STEM is
a national and regional effort to better prepare the workforce of tomorrow by
encouraging today’s students to engage in studies, events, and careers involving science,
technology, engineering and math. The breakfast is part of a local effort to encourage
students to engage in STEM activities, and is held in conjunction with STEM Week each
year. Andrew has a 4.30 GPA and plans to study Aeronautical Engineering at either
Purdue or Missouri S&T.

extremely important as all Timberland Juniors will be required

students between 15 and 19 years old residing within 150

AP EXAM INFORMATION
On April 22 students who registered for the AP exams will be gathered as a group to complete pre-exam
information on their answer document. This is a mandatory activity. Students will also receive a handout
with bus and testing instructions.
Testing will occur May 4 - May 15. The exam schedule is listed on the back of the Bulletin for AP Students
and Parents. Students will be testing with Liberty High School students at Liberty High School again this year.
Transportation will be provided.
DECA STATE
On March 15-17, thirty-one Timberland DECA students traveled to the Lake of the Ozarks for the annual
Missouri State Competition. These students, either as an individual or a team, completed a series of tasks in
hopes that they would out perform their competitors and make it to the international level. Participants
competed in
areas including finance,
marketing, fashion merchandising, sports and
entertainment, etc. This year Timberland DECA
had nine finalists and 14 qualifiers for the
international level of competition. Of these
qualifiers twelve students will be traveling to
Orlando, Florida on April 24-29. We wish all of
our DECA members luck as they test their skills
among other students all over the globe.

Timberland Receives Journalism Awards for School Newspaper and Yearbook
On Monday, March 9, members of the Timberland High School newspaper and yearbook staffs attended the
Sponsors of Student Publications Journalism Conference at Webster University. The school’s yearbook (Wolf
Tracks) received a rating of Superior. Area high school journalists attended the conference, where they
participated in workshops and panel discussions with local journalists and professionals in the field. THS students
work under the advisement of newspaper and yearbook sponsor Ida Hoffmann. The following Timberland
