Small Form-Factor, underwater fiber
A Technology Profile & Company Introduction by

Introduction
 EMO Marine Technologies Ltd
Electrical
 Mechanical
 Optical
Specializing in sub-sea, fiber optic communications,
Typically for Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs),
And sub-sea observation/sensor platform systems.
What is Multiplexing?
Multiplexing converts multiple system inputs into a single common
transmission line, which can be transferred over a great distance as a
common signal, and then de-multiplexed back into multiple system
outputs. Multiplexing can take place at different levels:-
• Time Division Multiplexing (TDM)
• Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM)
• Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM)
ROV Technology
 ROV = REMOTELY OPERATED VEHICLE
•
Subsea robotic vehicle controlled by a “pilot” on a ship
•
ROV launched from vessel and connected via a cable (umbilical + tether)
•
Power is transmitted over copper in the cable; video and data communications are transmitted
over optical fiber in the cable
•
ROVs range in size from hand-held to the size of a van or bus (workclass ROVs)
•
max. depth is typically 3000 – 6000 m for workclass ROVs

Why Fiber Optic?
FIBER ADVANTAGES
•
Bandwidth: Many Gb/s, up to Tb/s in Telecom
•
Distance: Capable of 100’s km without repeaters
•
Small Size: Reduces diameter of ROV cables
•
Lightweight: Reduces weight of ROV cables
•
Immunity: Not affected by electrical interference
•
Security: No radiated signal; difficult to tap undetected
•
Isolation: Eliminates “ground loops”; no shock hazard
What can we do with fiber?
 Analog data (e.g. Video, and sonar)
 Communication data
- Serial Data (RS-232, RS-485/422)
- Ethernet Data
 ROV Devices:
Cameras, Thrusters, Sonar, Manipulators, Hydrophones,
Sub-sea tooling
The Mini-T MUX System
The EMO Mini-T Multiplexer system offers the
smallest form-factor sub-sea MUX housing in
todays underwater market. At 4-inch in diameter,
And 13-inch in Length, the Mini-T can be
integrated into ROVs of ALL sizes and types, and
is not limited to larger working class vehicles with
larger payload capacity.
The Mini-T can accept and convert the following
channel types into a common fiber optic
transmission:
• Video (NTSC/PAL)
• SDI/HD-SDI High Definition Video
• Serial Data (RS-232/485/422)
• Ethernet (10/100 Base-T)
• GBE Gigabit Ethernet (1000Mbps)
The Mini-T MUX System
The Mini-T
MUX placed
next to an
industry
standard subsea MUX
bottle
DOMINO-7 MUX
 A bigger system,
for more channels…..
 offers far more advanced capability
in terms of sub-sea power management,
fiber redundancy, and top-side diagnostics
in the form of both LEDs at the rack, plus a detailed Ethernet + software + GUI
package.
