The museum shows permanently almost 40 works by the printers, Yasuki Taninaka born in Sakurai who played an active role from the end of Taisho Era to the beginning of Showa era and also Shiko Munakata, Takashi Oono and Keisuke Miyazaki. The dozo storehouse, main residence and 6 buildings were registered as anational tangible cultural property on December 4th in 2000 as the name of “Yamada Saketen /Sabou Haseji”, because of the contribution for the historical view of Japan. ✶ Brief explanation for visitors is available. It has an appearance harmonized with the view of Asuka. Various exhibitions by include traditional Japanese paintings inspired by Man’yo poems, videos, and music to allow visitors to fully experience the Man’yo World. The “Man’yo Garden” is one of the highlights. The museum is located in Mt. Kaguyama garden. The visitors can enjoy their learning, through watching, hearing, touching and feeling. This museum has a collection of insect specimens from all over the world and displays an ecological system. The Paper Kite butterfly and Chinese Windmill fly around in the greenhouse in which subtropical plants are planted. Talks about bugs, insects, animals and nature as well as demonstrations showing the eating habits of butterflies and other insect larvae in the new building are favorites among visitors. Visitors can see the history of Sakurai City from the primitive age to the ancient period at the permanent exhibition. Also, many objects such as artefacts from nationally popular ruins of Makimuku, bronze bell dotaku from the ruin of Daifuku and clay images haniwas, and possessions buried with the dead from ancient tombs are on display. Special exhibition is held three times a year with various themes. This is an important and unique facility where the visitors can freely step in a real, life-size sumo ring and can throw salt over the ring and do sumo-style leg stomps like a real sumo wrestler. You don’t have to take your shoes off to step in the ring. Unlike the actual sumo ring, women are able to enter the sumo ring at this museum. You can sit in the Masu seat and feel as if you were watching sumo matches. There are many documents and materials related to sumo in this facility. Most of these are donated by collectors. It seems to be true that this area is thought to be related the closest to the birthplace of sumo wrestling. There are abundant historical records all over the city. The House of Hosokawa Family, which had been wholesale store of medicine for many generations, was rebuilt and is opened for the public. The house is the birthplace of the late Tomokichi Fujisawa who founded Fujisawa Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd. Historical documents about the firm and Ouda-cho are exhibited in this merchant’s house style building of the end of Edo period. The museum shows history and culture of ancient Asuka through the display of the reconstructed models and artifacts from Takamatsuzuka tumulus designated as an Important Cultural Property, statue of stone Shumisenseki and the foundation stone for the central pillar of pagoda of AsukaderaTemple. The visitors can observe the old garden in which the replicas of the Shumisenseki, stone Statues, and Sakafuneishi are displayed. The mural of Takamatsuzuka Tumulus was designated as a national treasure after it was discovered. Visitors can observe the model of the stone room and precise replica of the mural. The paintings show influences from Chinese and Korean style of painting. Therefore, people from foreign countries pay much attention to the paintings as an important cultural property that could explain the mystery of Japanese ancient history. There are paintings of men and women, as well as paintings of four Gods and a constellation. It was thought to be made during the 7th Century. It is called “Ishibutai” (stone stage) because of the large stone room that was made visible after the removal of the dirt covering it. The tomb is made up of approximately 30 granite blocks of varying size, the largest weighing around 77 tons, with all blocks said to have a combined weight of 2,3000 tons. It is also said that there it is highly likely that this tomb belonged to “Soga-no-umako” the ruler of the surrounding lands in the latter half of the 6th century. The surrounding grounds feature Sakura and plum blossoms in the spring and red spider lilies in autumn. Designed by the architect Andou Tadaoshi, the building is an important piece of architecture, now with any round stump shaped building be referred to as Gokou Baum as a reference. The museum serves as a permanent display of the city’s culture and history displaying materials and videos of festivals and oth:er events, there is also a model railroad diorama making it an enjoyable place to learn about the city’s culture. From this house was born and raised the respected poet Fujioka Gyokkotsu who was known as “the great sakura of Yamamoto”. After the current family head had the building restored in 2008, it was opened to the public. The Fujioka family which have served as the head of the village since the Edo period, had their main facility built in 1832. The ten buildings take up approximately 1600 square metres and create an atmosphere through which you can feel the Edo period through to the Meiji. From the construction of the walls to the girders all of the home serves to show the prosperous splendour of the Fujioka family. Particularly the spare room and Tea room. The polished finish of the doors, frames and Japanese architecture are a beautiful example of japans traditional design. An excellent location to observe the facets of a village headman through shops, great pine arches of the warehouse and other architecture that have continued all the way from the Edo period. Once Miyataki was the central place in Yoshino. Relics and remains from the Jomon period to Nara era were discovered from the Miyataki ruins. The visitors can observe these excavated articles and illustrations of the past Miyataki. The highlight is the model of Yoshino palace built in Asuka era. Also are exhibited the typical Manyo poems about Yoshino made by Emperor Jito who had visited the palace more than 30 times. The exhibition on the 2nd floor shows Totsukawa village in each age such as the age of the southern Imperial Court and the age of the Meiji Restoration and so on. Totsukawa village had a deep relationship with the Imperial Family and played quite an important role in history. Many important documents and tangible/ intangible cultural property can be clues to the knowledge about the traditional village culture. Visitors can also know about the emigration to Hokkaido caused by the big flood of Meiji Era. Visitors can experience four seasons’ nature activities in the natural trees of the forest around the source of the Yoshino River, through a spectacle of the panoramic image and the huge diorama made of real woods. Visitors can also enjoy and learn about the relationship between forest and human beings, through the encounter with the creatures of the Yoshino River living in a big pool and reconstruction of old houses.
